Last updated: October 2026
United Therapeutics hosted 41 summer interns across 27 functions in 2024, from government affairs to organ manufacturing, and says more than 40 current employees started as interns, co-ops or university fellows (UT, September 2024). But nothing for summer 2027 is posted today (26 October 2026). The only student postings on UT's job board are three co-ops, and two of them require a master's or PhD.
UT hasn't published its summer 2027 dates, so the window below is an expectation: the one prior intern posting we could date was already listed on 2 March 2024, ahead of a May start. In plain words: you apply in early 2027 (expected), you intern in summer 2027. Start watching the board in January.

Extern's Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, separate from United Therapeutics' own co-ops. Most run 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week, so one fits before a January posting. The Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship practices the cost analysis one UT intern described, and the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship covers operations work. What Is a United Therapeutics Internship?
A United Therapeutics internship is a May-to-August summer role at the Silver Spring, Maryland biotech, which describes its work as addressing the needs of patients with chronic and life-threatening diseases. UT's own 2024 article says its interns, "advanced interns" and Seasonal Support Associates supported 27 functions and presented their projects at the end of the summer. The company also runs semester-long co-ops, which are lab-based and posted separately.
United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) is a public benefit corporation with its headquarters in Silver Spring and a large site in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The only cohort size UT has published is 41 students in 2024; cohort sizes for 2025 and 2026 aren't on UT-owned pages. UT calls its employees Unitherians, and says its talent team has been building the internship into a strategic program since 2022.

When Do United Therapeutics Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
United Therapeutics doesn't publish an internship calendar, so this timeline rests on a single dated data point. A 2024 intern posting, "Intern - Strategic Operations Business Resources," was captured on the job board on 2 March 2024, so it was listed at least about two and a half months before the May start. A capture date is only an upper bound on when a posting went live, so the true lead time could be longer. We found no 2025 or 2026 intern postings in archived copies, which doesn't prove they didn't exist. The summer 2027 window below is an expectation, not a published date.
No summer 2027 internship is posted. Three co-ops are on UT's board: spring 2027 roles in RTP and Medford for January starts, plus a Silver Spring computational co-op that still says "Spring 2026" and should be treated as stale.
Prepare for the board to open. The two spring 2027 co-ops start in early January, so they are the only roles with a near-term start.
Summer 2027 intern postings are expected on the Workday board. UT hasn't announced a date; this comes from the single 2024 posting that was already listed on 2 March 2024. Low confidence.
The summer cohort is expected to run May to August, as the 2024 cohort did. Interns present their projects at the end.
Postings for summer 2028 are expected about January to March 2028, if the 2024 pattern holds. One data point, so low confidence.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
We can't tell you which urgency mode UT uses, because it publishes no closing dates and we have no posting-to-close history. What we can say is that the single dated posting was live at least two and a half months before a May start, and that UT has built the program into a defined cohort of dozens of students. That argues for watching the board from January and applying early in the window instead of waiting. The co-ops are different: the Medford one was posted on 18 August and the Silver Spring one is stale, so don't count on either still being open when you read this.
Which United Therapeutics Internship Programs Should You Target?
Only the first row is a summer internship, and it isn't posted yet. The co-ops are open now but mostly for graduate students.
| Program | Who it's for | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer internship | College students; eligibility language isn't published on UT's pages | May – August (2024 cohort) | 41 students in 2024 across 27 functions; not posted for 2027; "competitive base hourly rates" plus a $3,500 stipend (2024) |
| Co-op, Regenerative Medicine Lab (R05235) | Active master's or PhD students in biology, biomedical sciences or engineering | January – June 2027, 40 hrs/week on site | RTP, NC; 2+ years of cell culture experience; posted 2 Oct 2026 |
| Co-op, IVIVA Physiology (R05229) | Junior year or above in engineering or biology (bachelor's or graduate) | Early January – June 2027, on site | Medford, MA; no housing or transportation; relocation stipend case by case; posted 18 Aug 2026 |
| Co-op, Computational Lab (R04721) | Master's or PhD | Says "Spring 2026" | Silver Spring, MD; stale posting, not open for 2027 |
| SLED pilot (Student-Led Exploration and Development) | American University students (2024) | One-off pilot | Students developed ideas for future development; no ongoing application |
UT's only published description of its internship program is its 2024 cohort article; its postings are on the Workday board.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
UT publishes eligibility only on its co-op postings, so these are the gates we can confirm:
• Medford co-op: an accredited college, good academic standing, a bachelor's or graduate degree program in engineering or biology, "junior year or above."
• RTP co-op: active master's or PhD enrollment in biology, biomedical sciences or engineering, with 2+ years of cell culture experience.
• Silver Spring co-op: master's or PhD, and the posting is stale.
• Summer internship: UT's own pages don't state eligibility. Wait for the posting before assuming a class year or major.
• Work authorization: the co-op postings state no sponsorship position, so ask before you apply.

Can Undergraduates Apply to the Co-ops?
Only to the Medford one. It asks for junior year or above, and a bachelor's degree program counts. The RTP and Silver Spring co-ops both require graduate enrollment, so sending an undergraduate application there would be wasted effort. If you're an undergraduate, your realistic UT route is the summer internship once it posts, and UT hasn't published who that program accepts.
What Skills Does United Therapeutics Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
UT's three co-op postings are all lab roles, so they describe the skills of the lab side of the company: cell culture, aseptic technique, imaging, and analysis in tools like Python, R, MATLAB, GraphPad Prism and ImageJ, plus a written report or a presentation to management. The 2024 article shows the business side too: one intern in Financial Planning and Analysis worked on costing for clinical work and helped with quarter close. No business-side intern posting is live, so we can't count their skills.
Note: Only three student postings are live on UT's board, all lab co-ops, so there are too few for a skills frequency chart. The skills named above come from those postings and from UT's 2024 cohort article.
How Is Demand for Pharmaceutical Interns Moving Right Now?
Pharmaceutical intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 36 in August
For United Therapeutics applicants: UT's own Workday board listed no summer intern requisitions on 26 October 2026; its three student postings were co-ops. Use the market picture to judge how many other employers you're up against while you wait for UT's summer postings.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill below maps to a remote Externship you can finish before UT's summer postings are expected in January.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Financial analysis and costing | 2024 FP&A intern: "My overall summer project was focused on costing for clinical work" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
| Operations and business resources | 2024 posting title: Intern - Strategic Operations Business Resources | Healthcare Operations & Consulting |
| Data analysis | Co-op postings name GraphPad Prism, ImageJ and Python, R or MATLAB for data analysis | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Databases and data handling | Co-op postings name Python, R or MATLAB and Excel for analysis | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
A finished project gives you something concrete to describe in the end-of-summer presentation UT requires of its interns.
What Is the United Therapeutics Application and Interview Process Like?
UT doesn't describe its interview process on its own pages, so here's what is confirmed:
1. Watch the board. Check the Workday board from January for summer postings. The careers page links to it.
2. Apply on Workday. There's no separate student application that we found.
3. Interview. Format and number of rounds aren't published by UT, and we found no first-hand intern interview reports.
4. During the program. UT's 2024 article describes a weekly speaker series with department leaders, facility tours, LinkedIn Learning access and a required end-of-project presentation.
5. Afterward. UT says more than 40 current employees began as interns, co-ops or university fellows.
Our STAR method guide covers the behavioral questions biotech interviews lean on.
What Students on Reddit Say
We read three Reddit threads that mention United Therapeutics (a Silver Spring local asking about the campus, a North Carolina biotech employer thread and an r/biotech employer discussion). None is a first-hand intern account, so this section has no quote cards.
How Do You Stand Out for a United Therapeutics Internship?
Three moves, all doable before the board opens.
Pick a project you can present. UT requires every intern to give an end-of-project presentation, so show in your application that you can explain a piece of analysis clearly. A short write-up of a data or costing project works.
Use UT's own mission language. The company describes itself as a public benefit corporation and talks about "patient-centric" work, in functions that either support patient outcomes or enable them. Say which side you're on and why.
Know the numbers you can cite. The only published cohort size is 41 students in 2024, and no conversion rate is published, so cite the "more than 40 current Unitherians" figure as UT's 2024 claim instead of a rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 United Therapeutics internship?
No. The summer 2026 program has already run, and no summer intern postings are listed on UT's board today. The student postings now open are co-ops that start in January 2027. The next summer door is the 2027 internship, which UT hasn't posted yet.
When will United Therapeutics post summer 2027 internships?
UT hasn't announced a date. The one prior intern posting we could date was already listed on March 2, 2024, ahead of a May start, so expect postings by about March 2027, possibly earlier. That's a low-confidence expectation from one data point, so check the Workday board from January.
Are any United Therapeutics student roles open right now?
Three co-ops are listed. The Medford, Massachusetts co-op takes junior year and above, the Research Triangle Park co-op requires a master's or PhD, and the Silver Spring computational co-op still says Spring 2026, so treat it as stale. None is a summer internship.
How much do United Therapeutics interns get paid?
UT hasn't published an hourly rate on its own pages. Its September 2024 article says interns receive competitive base hourly rates plus a $3,500 housing and transportation stipend added that year. The Medford co-op offers no housing or transportation, with a relocation stipend possible case by case.
How many interns does United Therapeutics hire?
UT hosted 41 summer interns in 2024, working across 27 functions from May to August. That's the only cohort size on UT's own pages. We found no 2025 or 2026 figure there, so don't assume the class is the same size for summer 2027.
Can undergraduates apply to United Therapeutics co-ops?
Only the Medford, Massachusetts co-op, which asks for junior year or above in an engineering or biology degree program. The Research Triangle Park and Silver Spring co-ops require master's or PhD enrollment. Undergraduates should wait for the summer internship posting instead of applying to the graduate-level co-ops.
Do United Therapeutics interns get full-time jobs?
Some do, but UT publishes no conversion rate. Its 2024 article says more than 40 current employees started as interns, co-ops or university fellows. Treat that as a pipeline claim, not a percentage of each class, and ask your manager about openings during the summer.
Where are United Therapeutics internships located?
The 2024 interns worked at UT's Silver Spring, Maryland and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina campuses. The three current co-ops are in Research Triangle Park, Medford, Massachusetts and Silver Spring. UT doesn't provide housing for the Medford co-op, so plan for relocation costs.
United Therapeutics' summer 2027 postings aren't up yet, which gives you until about January. A remote Externship such as the Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship can give you a project to present when they appear.
