Tampa General Hospital is the 1,354-bed academic health system on Davis Islands and the primary teaching hospital for USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, with 13,026 full-time employees according to its fact sheet. What it doesn't have is a corporate or undergraduate summer internship program. On 3 October 2026 its five job boards listed 685 distinct openings and not one internship.

Students get in through other doors. Nursing students can work year-round as paid Patient Care Techs, with 16 such jobs open to them at a posted minimum of $15.91 an hour. Undergraduates and medical students compete for the unpaid Transplant Institute summer research program, and clinical-lab students face a hard 31 December 2026 deadline for TGH's School of Medical Laboratory Science. Most of these are rolling jobs, so you apply when you're ready; the dated doors for 2027 are lab science by 31 December and the chaplaincy summer unit from January to March.

What Is a Tampa General Hospital Internship?

A Tampa General Hospital internship, in practice, means one of a handful of student doors rather than a single program: a paid Patient Care Tech job you can hold during nursing school, the unpaid Transplant Institute summer research program, or a credential program such as Medical Laboratory Science.

The research program is the closest thing to a classic internship. A USF Honors profile describes it as an experience for a select group of undergraduates who do transplant-related clinical research with a mentoring physician, shadow physicians and aim to take a project through to an abstract or manuscript.

TGH is Tampa Bay's only Level I trauma center, according to its careers site, and its fact sheet says it's the #1 hospital in Tampa Bay in U.S. News & World Report's 2026–27 rankings. USF medical, nursing and physical therapy students train there.

When Do Tampa General Hospital Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Tampa General runs no internship cycle, so the calendar below is a set of separate doors. The dates come from TGH's own pages and job board as of 3 October 2026.

The Patient Care Tech jobs don't follow a season. TGH posts them as units need staff, and 16 of the 25 PCT postings live on 3 October accepted nursing students. The Medical Laboratory Science deadline is a standing rule: 31 December before the August class begins. The CPE summer window ran 1 January to 31 March in 2026 and is expected to repeat. The Transplant Institute doesn't publish its research program dates online; a 2025 participant had an acceptance by early March.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications are open right now for one door: 16 Patient Care Tech jobs that accept nursing students who've completed Fundamentals of Nursing. Nothing else for summer 2027 is open yet, and the June 2027 Administrative Fellowship closed on 28 August.

If you're not a nursing student, use the fall to build proof. The Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship both run on Extern's platform, separate from TGH.
By 31 Dec 2026HARD DEADLINE

Medical Laboratory Science applications are due for the class starting in August 2027. TGH says incomplete applications won't be considered.

1 Jan – 31 Mar 2027EXPECTED

The Clinical Pastoral Education summer 2027 enrollment window is expected, based on 2026's dates. Transplant research decisions for summer 2027 are expected by early March, based on a 2025 participant's report. Volunteer applications for the summer session are due 1 March.

Summer 2027

The Transplant Institute research program runs about 8 weeks, and the CPE summer unit runs June to mid-August. PCT jobs continue year-round.

Jun – Aug 2027EXPECTED

The Administrative Fellowship window for a June 2028 start is expected, based on this year's 8 June to 28 August 2026 window.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

For the PCT jobs, speed matters more than any deadline. TGH says its recruiters review applications the same day they arrive and aim to answer within about two weeks, and a Reddit commenter from USF said TGH listings draw far more applicants than they need. These postings come and go: a Respiratory Extern job for respiratory-care students was live on 28 September 2026 and gone from the board by 3 October.

The lab science deadline is absolute. Applications that aren't complete by 31 December won't be considered, and the school takes only a handful of students a year, so transcripts and references need to arrive before the holidays.

For the Transplant Institute program, the risk is an unknown window. TGH doesn't post dates online, so contact the institute in the fall rather than waiting for a public posting.

Which Tampa General Hospital Internship Programs Should You Target?

TGH doesn't run a corporate internship program. These are the student doors with a published structure or live postings.

Start with the TGH job board for PCT jobs and the Medical Laboratory Science application page for the 31 December deadline. Ignore postings titled "Registered Behavioral Health Intern": those are Florida licensure roles for people with a master's degree.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Each door sets its own rules. These come from TGH's postings and program pages:

• Patient Care Tech: a high school diploma or GED, plus either a Florida CNA licence or current enrolment in an ASN or BSN program with Fundamentals of Nursing completed. Nursing students must submit an unofficial transcript.

• Transplant research program: aimed at undergraduates, though medical students have taken part too. TGH doesn't publish formal criteria online.

• Medical Laboratory Science: selection weighs science and overall GPA, references, volunteer and work experience, repeated classes and an interview; affiliated-university applicants win ties.

• CPE summer unit: a bachelor's degree at minimum, an ACPE application and an admissions interview.

• All TGH jobs: a post-offer drug screen, background check and employment eligibility check through E-Verify.

Do You Need a CNA Licence to Work at TGH as a Student?

Not if you're in nursing school. Every PCT posting that accepts students lists two routes: a Florida CNA licence, or current enrolment in a nursing program with Fundamentals of Nursing completed and a transcript to prove it.

For pre-health students outside nursing, it's harder. A USF commenter said most TGH jobs now expect a certification such as CNA, MA or EMT, which is why many start through the volunteer program instead.

What Skills Does Tampa General Hospital Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The PCT postings are short and consistent. Every one that accepts students asks for Fundamentals of Nursing, a transcript and work under the supervision of licensed nurses, and most describe direct care with hygiene, mobility and comfort.

The research and administrative doors want different skills: clinical research methods and writing for the transplant program, and project management and executive presentation for the fellowship.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Clinical skills come from your nursing or lab program. The research and operations skills are easier to build on your own.

An Externship won't count toward clinical hours. It gives a research or fellowship application a finished project, which matters at a hospital where most student doors are jobs, not structured programs.

What Is the Tampa General Hospital Application and Interview Process Like?

For the PCT jobs, TGH's careers FAQ describes a quick process:

1. Search the right titles. On the Taleo board, search "Patient Care Tech" and read the qualifications for the nursing-student line. Check the TGH North board too for Brooksville and Spring Hill.

2. Apply with your transcript. Upload an unofficial transcript showing Fundamentals of Nursing. TGH says recruiters review applications the same day they arrive.

3. Interviews. One or two interviews, starting with a behavioral or competency conversation and sometimes a department panel, by phone, video or in person.

4. Answer in about two weeks. TGH aims to respond within roughly two weeks.

5. Post-offer checks. A drug screen, background check and E-Verify employment check before you start.

For the Transplant Institute program, lab science and CPE, apply through each program's own process; the CPE application goes through ACPE.

What Students on Reddit Say

Most Reddit talk about TGH comes from USF students and new nurses. Each card is one thread's experience.

A medical student accepted to the Tampa General Transplant Institute summer research program described it as 8 weeks with no stipend. Commenters weighing it against paid offers from other programs ranked it last for that reason.

Asked where to work as a student, USF commenters recommended Tampa General or BayCare. A TGH phlebotomist said the per-diem minimum of 16 hours every two weeks was workable alongside classes, though another said TGH pay was low for their ER role.

r/USF consensus (May 2023), paraphrased · read the thread

A pre-med without a car was told TGH is over an hour by bus from USF's campus, and that its listings draw so many applicants that most jobs now expect a certification such as CNA, MA or EMT.

How Do You Stand Out at Tampa General as a Student?

Three moves, matched to the doors that exist.

First, if you're in nursing school, get Fundamentals of Nursing onto your transcript and apply to several PCT postings at once. Every student-eligible posting asks for the course and the transcript, and recruiters move the same day.

Second, if you're pre-med or pre-health, ask the Transplant Institute about its summer research program in the fall. Dates aren't published, past participants heard by early March, and the program is unpaid, so line up funding or credit early.

Third, don't skip the volunteer program. Applications are due 1 March for the summer session and 1 July for the fall, and USF students describe it as the way many first get inside TGH.

TGH doesn't publish a conversion rate, but nursing graduates who want to stay join its Nurse Residency Program, and time on a unit as a PCT is the most direct preparation for that.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Tampa General Hospital internship?

No, and TGH doesn't run a summer internship program at all. On 3 October 2026 its job boards listed no internships. What's open now are Patient Care Tech jobs for nursing students; the next dated deadline is 31 December 2026 for Medical Laboratory Science, and the June 2027 Administrative Fellowship already closed.

Does Tampa General have a summer 2027 internship program?

Not a corporate one. Students get in through paid Patient Care Tech jobs, the unpaid Transplant Institute summer research program, Medical Laboratory Science or the chaplaincy CPE unit. Graduate students can apply for the Couris Family Administrative Fellowship, whose next window is expected in June to August 2027.

Can nursing students work at Tampa General?

Yes. On 3 October 2026, 16 Patient Care Tech postings accepted nursing students enrolled in an ASN or BSN program who've completed Fundamentals of Nursing, with an unofficial transcript. The posted minimum is $15.91 an hour. These are year-round jobs, not a summer externship cohort.

Is the TGH Transplant Institute research program paid?

A 2025 participant described it as 8 weeks with no stipend. TGH doesn't publish the program's application dates online; that participant had an acceptance by early March. A USF Honors profile describes mentored clinical research, physician shadowing and a goal of finishing an abstract or manuscript.

When is the Medical Laboratory Science deadline?

31 December 2026 for the class starting in August 2027. TGH's rule is a deadline of 31 December before the August class begins, and incomplete applications won't be considered. The program runs 51 weeks at 35 to 40 hours a week and takes about six students a year.

Is the Tampa General administrative fellowship open for 2027?

No. Applications for the June 2027 start ran 8 June to 28 August 2026, and final-round interviews were on 28 and 29 September. The next window, for a June 2028 start, is expected around June to August 2027, with information webinars beforehand.

Are "Registered Behavioral Health Intern" jobs at TGH internships?

No. Those titles refer to Florida's post-master's licensure registrations for mental health counselors and clinical social workers. The postings require a master's degree and clinical experience, so they aren't student internships, even though the word intern is in the title.

How fast does Tampa General hire students?

Quickly, by hospital standards. TGH says recruiters review applications on the day they arrive, interviews run one or two rounds, and it aims to give each applicant an answer within about two weeks. Post-offer steps include a drug screen, background check and E-Verify.

Tampa General has no internship to wait for, so pick the door that fits you: a PCT job now if you're in nursing school, or the 31 December lab science deadline.

If you want a finished healthcare project for a research or fellowship application, a remote Externship is one way to build it.
