Two Subaru employers recruit US interns, and they're on different footings today. Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), the only Subaru vehicle plant outside Japan, posted three Summer 2027 Professional Internships in Engineering, Information Technology and Business Operations on October 8, 2026, and all three were live when we rechecked on October 25. Subaru of America (SOA), headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, runs a one-year and a summer internship at $20 an hour for undergraduates, and its own program page says positions are posted September to November. Its two 2027 requisitions exist in Subaru's system, but neither was listed on the public job board on October 25. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027 (or, at SOA, for a full year starting in May).

What Is a Subaru Internship?

A Subaru internship in the US means one of two employers. Subaru of America, Inc. runs an Internship Program from its Camden, New Jersey headquarters, with interns also placed at its Michigan R&D site, Dallas and Western Region offices, Lafayette yard operations and a Maryland training center. Its alumni videos cover summer rotations, experiential marketing, connected business, promotions, corporate social responsibility, IT, sales field operations, fixed operations and accounting. Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. runs separate Professional Internships at its Lafayette plant, which it calls "the only Subaru vehicle manufacturing facility outside of Japan" with 6500+ associates. When Do Subaru Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Subaru's two US employers run different calendars. SIA posted its three Summer 2027 internships on October 8, 2026, and the board data shows them valid through May 1, 2027, which is a board field, not a stated deadline. SOA publishes a roadmap: Step 1 (September to November), internship positions are posted and initial interviews are conducted; Step 2 (November to January), interviews continue and final offers go out; one-year internships begin in May after Memorial Day; summer programs begin in the first week of June. That's roughly a 6 to 9 month lead for a fall posting. We found no dated earlier cycle for SOA, so treat next year's window as an expectation: SOA positions around September to November 2027.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Neither employer publishes a closing date, so the urgency comes from capacity. Each SIA posting carries the note "availability for internships varies for each department," which means individual departments can fill at different speeds, and the May 1, 2027 date on the board is a data field rather than a promise that seats last that long. At SOA, the roadmap packs the posting step and first interviews into September to November and offers by January, so a window that's quiet today can open and move quickly. Apply to SIA now, set an alert for SOA, and apply as soon as its requisitions appear.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility differs sharply between the two employers.

• Class year (SOA): current juniors or seniors planning to pursue a master's degree, or students currently enrolled in a master's program. All interns must be active students for the whole internship.

• Majors (SOA): a long list that includes accounting, advertising, automotive technology management, business analytics, communications, computer science, cyber security, electrical and mechanical engineering, finance, HR, marketing, supply chain and more.

• Driving (SOA): some internships require driving company vehicles, which needs a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

• Class year and GPA (SIA): neither is stated in the three postings.

• Work authorization: none of the postings we read mentions it, so confirm with each employer's recruiter before you apply.

Does SOA Only Take Students Heading to Grad School?

As written, yes. The requisitions and the program page both say juniors or seniors planning to pursue a master's degree, or current master's students. A sophomore, or a senior with no plan for graduate study, doesn't match the stated rule. SIA's postings don't state a class-year rule, so students outside SOA's range should look there first.

What Skills Does Subaru Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

SOA's two requisitions share one skill list: excellent communication and interpersonal skills "with the ability to interface with all levels of the organization," strong Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel), and the ability to work independently and on a team. Its FAQ adds relevant coursework, a problem-solving mindset and openness to feedback, and recommends preparing STAR stories and researching the Subaru Love Promise. SIA's postings name no tools; they list the departments you could land in, from stamping and trim and final to cyber security, data analytics, procurement and production control.

The best overlap is on the operations side for SIA and the marketing and finance side for SOA: a finished project in either gives you something specific to describe in a virtual HR screen.

What Is the Subaru Application and Interview Process Like?

SOA publishes its selection steps; SIA doesn't. Here's what each states:

1. Find the posting. SOA lists internships under "Students & Interns" on its Oracle careers site. SIA posts on careers.subaru-sia.com under Internship.

2. Initial application review (SOA). The team checks whether your resume and materials match the internship role. You can apply for a specific role or be placed in a position that matches your field of study.

3. Virtual HR screening (SOA). An introductory conversation about your background and areas of interest.

4. Hiring manager interviews (SOA). These go deeper, with behavioral and situational questions. SOA recommends STAR stories and research on the Subaru Love Promise.

5. Final selection and offer. SOA's roadmap puts final offers between November and January. SIA doesn't publish its steps.

SIA's postings direct you to apply online and note that availability varies by department; they don't describe interview stages, so we haven't.

How Do You Stand Out for a Subaru Internship?

First, check the rules for the employer you want. SOA's master's-track rule screens out many applicants before anyone reads a resume, and SIA's postings state no class-year rule. Second, learn the Subaru Love Promise. SOA's own FAQ names it as the first thing to research, and the program ties interns to community service. Third, bring a concrete project. SOA's interns work on real projects tied to their major, and SIA says finishing students "will be able to connect their industry experience with their educational focus." Neither employer publishes class size, applicant counts or a conversion rate, so we won't estimate them.
