Stifel has run investment banking, public finance, equity research, and wealth management out of St. Louis since 1890, and it set a firm record last year with $551.9 billion in client assets. It also runs internships the way a 135 year old middle market shop should: smaller deal teams than a bulge bracket, more direct client and Managing Director exposure, and a Summer Analyst class that competes for many of the same students. For the 2027–2028 cycle (you apply during the 2026–2027 academic year for summer 2028), the Investment Banking and Institutional Group Summer Analyst program is expected to open around November 2026 on a rolling, per office basis, based on the prior cycle's November 16, 2025 open date. That's roughly 18 months of lead time, in line with Stifel's mid market peers. And because Stifel posts separate listings by office and desk rather than one company wide deadline, the evidence on your resume needs to be ready before your target group's posting goes live.

What Is a Stifel Internship?

A Stifel internship is a paid placement at a 135 year old, St. Louis headquartered financial services firm that runs both a full service Wealth Management platform, the 7th largest in the U.S. by number of advisors, and an Institutional Group spanning Investment Banking, Public Finance, Equity Research, Fixed Income Capital Markets, and Sales & Trading. The Institutional Group program runs about 9 to 10 weeks and opens with a week of training in financial analysis, accounting, and valuation before interns join deal teams alongside Analysts through Managing Directors. Stifel's pitch is smaller deal teams than a bulge bracket, meaning more hands on responsibility earlier. Reviews back that up: Stifel's intern reviewers rate the experience 100% recommend on Glassdoor (8 reviews), and Wall Street Oasis places its interview experience in the 89th percentile of the finance industry at 3.7 out of 5. The firm set a record $551.9 billion in client assets in fiscal year 2025.

When Do Stifel Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Stifel's Institutional Group posts its Summer Analyst openings earlier than most industries and later than the very earliest banks. The current cycle's Investment Banking and Institutional Group program opened November 16, 2025, and Stifel keeps individual office and desk postings live on a rolling basis for months rather than closing everything on one date. So for summer 2028, expect the same pattern shifted a year forward: applications opening around November 2026, with review rolling through winter and Superdays into spring 2027. Sophomores get an earlier on ramp too. Stifel's invite only Sophomore Explorers Program runs a 4 day immersion in New York each January, with applications due the prior November, and successful participants are considered for the following summer's internships.

Now · Summer 2026YOU ARE HERE

Summer 2028 applications for Stifel's Institutional Group haven't posted yet, and the pattern points to roughly November 2026. This is the proof building window: what's on your resume when your target office's listing goes live decides whether the rolling review ever reaches you.

The Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship and the Attronica FP&A Externship are remote, real company projects that give a fall application finished modeling and valuation work to point at.
Fall 2026

Sophomores: the invite only Sophomore Explorers Program, a 4 day New York immersion covering Investment Banking, Fixed Income, and Equity Research, typically requires applying by mid November for a January session. Rising juniors: research Stifel's recent deals by sector and prepare a 'Why Stifel' answer built around its middle market focus.

November 2026EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

The Investment Banking and Institutional Group Summer Analyst window is expected to open here, posted separately by office and desk rather than all at once. Apply the week your target listing goes live; postings stay open for months, but slots fill as applications come in.

Rolling process: a HireVue video interview (behavioral questions plus timed games), then a phone or first round interview with junior bankers, then a multi stage Superday. The Home Office and Wealth Management internship also opens broadly in fall 2026 and fills on a similar rolling basis.

Summer 2028

9 to 10 weeks on a deal team or in a Home Office department, starting with a week of training. Perform well: community data puts intern to full time conversion around 65%, though the rate has run lower in leaner years.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Stifel doesn't run one company wide application deadline. It posts separate Summer Analyst listings by office and desk, sometimes months apart, and reviews each on a rolling basis. That structure rewards speed differently than a single hard cutoff: the listing for your target group, whether that's Investment Banking in St. Louis, Fixed Income Capital Markets in New York, or Eaton Partners in Stamford, can open and start filling while a listing for a different desk is still weeks away. Wall Street Oasis interview reports for Stifel interns span nearly every month of the year, from June through December, which is exactly what a staggered, per desk posting calendar produces. Waiting for one known date is the wrong strategy here. Set an alert on Stifel's talent network and the specific office pages you want, and apply within days of your target listing going live.

Which Stifel Internship Programs Should You Target?

Stifel runs internships across two broad groups: the Institutional Group (Investment Banking, Public Finance, Equity Research, Fixed Income Capital Markets & Equities, and Sales & Trading) and Home Office & Wealth Management (Compliance, HR, Operations, IT, Marketing, Private Client Group, and more). The Institutional Group is the more selective, deal facing path; Home Office is the broader entry point across nearly every business function.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Stifel publishes different requirements for its two internship groups:

Class year: Institutional Group targets students who will have completed their junior year by the internship's start, a rising senior internship. Home Office requires at least one year of college completed.

GPA: Institutional Group states a minimum GPA of 3.5, described in the posting as a floor, not a preference. Home Office publishes no GPA minimum.

Work authorization: every Institutional Group posting requires authorization to work in the U.S. Stifel does not publish a blanket no sponsorship policy the way some peers do; community sources note the firm sponsors selectively for some MBA and associate level hires, but this is not confirmed for undergraduate interns.

Resume format: Institutional Group postings require a PDF resume that states your expected graduation month, year, and GPA directly on the document.

Overhead close-up of a desk set up for a financial modeling session, a closed laptop, a mechanical pencil resting on a p

Does Stifel Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?

Yes, for the Institutional Group, and it's stated more firmly than at most peers: the posting reads 'Minimum GPA of 3.5 or above,' not 'preferred.' Below that line, applications aren't guaranteed a look. Home Office & Wealth Management is the opposite: no published GPA floor at all, just a track record of academic and extracurricular achievement. If your GPA sits under 3.5, that broader track, or a smaller regional Institutional office, is the more realistic entry point than a flagship desk.

What Skills Does Stifel Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Stifel's own Investment Banking and KBW Summer Analyst postings use identical language, and the intern assessment criteria the firm publishes match them closely. Financial modeling, quantitative and analytical skills, and communication appear in both the job posting and the official evaluation rubric Stifel publishes for its Institutional interns. So does attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast paced environment. Excel and PowerPoint proficiency is a stated requirement, not an assumption. What does that combination tell you? Stifel screens for the same technical base as any investment bank, then layers on the extracurricular leadership record it explicitly asks for in every posting.

How Is Demand for Investment Banking Interns Moving Right Now?

Investment banking intern hiring right now: August 2026

Across roughly 34 US IB intern postings tracked this month, up from 24 in July · aggregate market data, all employers

IB intern postings up roughly 39% month over month as 2027 Summer Analyst cycles open, though the base is still small enough that a handful of banks moves the percentage
Excel tightened to about 64% of sampled postings, up from 59% in July, still the single most named skill in IB intern job descriptions
PowerPoint is the fastest rising skill, now named in about 48% of postings, up from 41%, as more employers spell out pitch deck work explicitly
Hybrid postings roughly tripled to about 26% of tagged listings, up from 9%, though onsite work still dominates IB intern roles

The signal for a Stifel applicant: Excel and PowerPoint are named requirements on Stifel's own postings, and they're also what the broader market is asking for more explicitly this month. Building both before you apply is not optional.

Method: aggregate analysis of US investment banking intern postings via hiring.cafe daily aggregates, August 2026 vs July 2026. Sample indexes under half of all US postings; figures show direction of change, not total market share.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Every skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project before the window opens.

Company & industry research for deal sourcingJD: "conduct company and industry research," "engage in company and credit oriented research and due diligence"Mangusta Capital Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis

How close is the overlap? The Yinan Zhao project builds a valuation model in the same DCF and comps vocabulary Stifel's own posting uses, and the Mangusta Capital externship's deal screening work maps directly onto the "due diligence" and "industry research" line items that show up in every Stifel and KBW Summer Analyst posting.

What Is the Stifel Application and Interview Process Like?

Stifel's Institutional Group runs a four stage funnel, and because postings go up per office and desk, each stage can start at a different time depending on which group you applied to:

1. Apply through careers-stifel.icims.com or join.stifel.com. Stifel posts separate listings per office and desk (Investment Banking, KBW, Eaton Partners, Fixed Income, Public Finance), so pick your strongest fit group. Your resume must be a PDF stating your expected graduation month, year, and GPA.

2. HireVue video interview. Candidate reports describe 5 behavioral questions, with multiple tries per question, plus timed HireVue games testing mental math, pattern recognition, and personality.

3. Phone or first round interview with an MD, Director, or junior banker. Resume walkthrough, "Why Stifel," and light behavioral questions; technical depth is usually minimal at this stage.

4. Superday, typically 3 rounds: senior banker behavioral interviews, then a 2 on 1 technical round with analysts covering fundamentals. Fixed Income and Sales & Trading candidates report panels of up to 5 directors.

5. Offer. Wall Street Oasis rates Stifel's overall interview experience 3.7 out of 5 (89th percentile) and difficulty 2.8 out of 5, leaning toward the easier end of the industry.

There's no published aptitude test for U.S. roles; the HireVue games are the closest thing. Rehearse the behavioral rounds and a DCF or comps walkthrough instead: our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool runs the same timed format.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three community threads show the process and the culture from the inside.

I'm currently a junior at a state school and I recently got an offer as an IB summer analyst at Stifel in their public finance group. It's not exactly a bulge bracket, but it's a real seat and real deal work.

How Do You Stand Out on a Rolling, Per Desk Calendar?

Three moves, all doable before your target listing goes live. First, pick your desk early and apply within days of its posting going up. Stifel doesn't review applications in one company wide batch, so the students who move first on their group's listing get reviewed first. Second, build proof in the JD's own words: financial modeling, DCF and comps work, and company research are named requirements, and a finished project answers a behavioral question with a real deliverable instead of a story. Third, come with a genuine reason for choosing a middle market firm, since Stifel's smaller deal teams and direct client exposure are the pitch it makes to every candidate. And know the stakes: community data puts conversion at roughly 65%, but that number has dropped as low as half the class in leaner hiring years, so summer performance still decides the outcome.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2027 Stifel internship?

Possibly, depending on the desk. Stifel's Investment Banking and Institutional Group applications for summer 2027 opened November 16, 2025 and stayed open on a rolling, per office basis well into 2026, so some listings may still be live. Check current openings on Stifel's careers page, and plan for summer 2028 either way.

When do Stifel internship applications open for summer 2028?

Expected around November 2026 for the Investment Banking and Institutional Group track, based on the prior cycle's November 16, 2025 open date, roughly 18 months before the internship starts. Home Office & Wealth Management applications open more broadly in fall 2026.

Is Stifel internship hiring rolling?

Yes, and it's staggered by office and desk rather than one company wide window. A listing for one group can open and start filling while a different desk's listing is still weeks from posting, so apply within days of your target group going live.

Does Stifel require a minimum GPA for internships?

The Institutional Group posting states a minimum GPA of 3.5, described as a floor rather than a preference. Home Office & Wealth Management publishes no GPA minimum, weighing communication skills and a track record of achievement instead.

What is the Stifel internship interview process like?

Apply with a PDF resume stating your graduation date and GPA, then a HireVue video interview with timed games, a phone or first round interview, and a multi-stage Superday. Wall Street Oasis rates the overall experience 3.7 out of 5 and difficulty 2.8 out of 5.

Do Stifel interns get return offers?

Stifel doesn't publish an official conversion rate, but states that many of its strongest associates started as interns. Community data from Wall Street Oasis puts intern to full time conversion around 65%, though one Reddit thread describes a leaner cycle where roughly half the class did not convert.

What skills does Stifel look for in interns?

Stifel's own Summer Analyst posting and its published assessment criteria both name financial modeling, analytical and quantitative reasoning, communication, and attention to detail. Excel and PowerPoint proficiency is a stated requirement, and a strong extracurricular leadership record is explicitly part of the screen.

How much does a Stifel internship pay?

Institutional Group interns report an average total annualized pay around $104,000 (community data, small sample), in line with mid-market investment banking peers. Home Office and Wealth Management interns report closer to $17 to $23 an hour.

Stifel doesn't run one company wide deadline, it runs dozens of rolling, per desk ones. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship turns "interested in middle-market banking" into a finished valuation project you can point to the moment your target listing goes live.
