The detail applicants most often miss: if you're at a four-year university and didn't transfer from a community college, you aren't eligible, even if you're a first-year student.

Snap's application asks for work samples, and the Engineering Academy wants a portfolio on GitHub or similar. A remote Externship like the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship gives you a finished project to show before the 2027 window opens.

What Are the Snap Academies?

The Snap Academies are four nine-week, instructor-led, paid summer training programs hosted by Snap Inc. They're built for students who face barriers to getting into tech, and Snap says its goal is for every scholar to finish internship-ready, with a portfolio. The four academies are Design, Engineering, Storytelling and Lens, which covers augmented reality. In the Snap Engineering Academy, scholars follow a mobile and web development curriculum, with projects that include a JavaScript painting app, a full-feature React Native chat app and a mobile app prototype for the Final Showcase, plus weekly technical mock interviews with Snap team members. Across the academies, scholars get mentorship from Snap team members, fireside chats, workshops and a final capstone or group project.

Who Can Apply to the Snap Academies?

Snap Academies eligibility is narrow on purpose. Based on the 2026 cycle's rules:

• Community college students: currently enrolled at a community college

• Recent transfers: moved from a community college to a four-year university within the last 18 months

• Opportunity youth: 18 or older, with lived experience in the child welfare system, housing insecurity or the justice system

• Age and enrollment: 18 or older, and currently enrolled in school with a graduation date no sooner than fall 2026 (2026 wording)

• Location: Design, Engineering and Storytelling require living in Southern California with reliable transportation to Santa Monica. Lens Academy is open to all US-based candidates

• Engineering Academy skills: comfortable in at least two popular languages (such as Python, Java or C, C++ or C#), curious about intermediate data structures and algorithms, and a portfolio on GitHub or similar

• Not eligible: students at four-year universities who didn't transfer from a community college

Snap says it doesn't collect or consider race, gender, ethnicity or other protected characteristics when it reviews applications. If you're selected from outside Southern California, there's no relocation or housing stipend, so the in-person academies only work if you already live nearby. The 2027 rules aren't posted yet, so recheck them when the window opens.

When Do Snap Academies Applications Open for Summer 2027?

The 2027 dates aren't published, so everything below for 2027 is projected from two cycles. In 2025, applications ran March 3 to April 4 and the program ran June 16 to August 14. In 2026, applications ran March 2 to April 10, decisions came by May 20, and the program ran June 15 to August 14. How Do You Apply to the Snap Academies?

In 2026, the Snap Academies application had three stages:

1. Stage 1: submit the academy application on snapacademies.com, with your resume, transcript, work samples and answers to background questions, plus an on-demand recorded video interview.

2. Stage 2: complete a project-based assessment over a few days.

3. Final stage: if selected, schedule a 30-minute interview with a current Snap employee.

4. Apply to more than one academy if you qualify for more than one. You can attend only one.

These steps are from the 2026 cycle. Join the mailing list now so you get the 2027 dates and info session invitations as soon as Snap posts them.

Do the Snap Academies Lead to a Job at Snap?

Snap doesn't promise one. It describes the goal as making every scholar "internship-ready," which means you leave with a portfolio, practice in technical interviews and mentors at Snap, not a guaranteed internship or job. Snap doesn't publish how many scholars go on to Snap internships. If you later apply to Snap's regular internships, our Snap internship guide covers that timeline.

How Do You Build a Strong Snap Academies Application?

Snap's application asks for work samples and a project-based assessment, so the strongest applicants show finished work, not just interest. Here's what to build for each track.

FAQ

When do Snap Academies applications open for 2027?

Snap hasn't published 2027 dates. Based on the last two cycles, applications are expected to open in early March 2027 and close in early to mid April 2027. In 2026, they ran March 2 to April 10, and in 2025, March 3 to April 4. Join the mailing list on snapacademies.com for the official dates.

Are the Snap Academies paid?

Yes. Every scholar receives an academy payment to cover participation, program completion and related expenses, and scholars are onboarded as 1099 independent contractors. Snap doesn't publish the amount. It provides learning equipment such as laptops, but there's no relocation or housing stipend for scholars from outside Southern California.

Can students at four-year universities apply to the Snap Academies?

Only if they transferred from a community college within the last 18 months. Students at four-year universities who didn't transfer from a community college aren't eligible. The program is for community college students, recent transfers and opportunity youth. The eligibility rules we reviewed don't include a GPA minimum.

Do you need to live in Southern California?

For three of the four academies, yes. Design, Engineering and Storytelling run in person at Snap's Santa Monica offices and require reliable transportation there. Lens Academy runs on Zoom and is open to all US-based candidates. Snap doesn't offer relocation or housing help for in-person scholars.

What do you need for the Snap Engineering Academy?

You should be comfortable in at least two popular languages, such as Python, Java or C, C++ or C#, and curious about intermediate data structures and algorithms. Snap also asks for a portfolio on GitHub or similar. The curriculum covers mobile and web development, including a React Native chat app.

Can you apply to more than one Snap Academy?

Yes. You can apply to more than one academy, but you can attend only one. Each academy took 15 scholars in 2026, for 60 in total, so applying to two tracks you genuinely fit can help. Tailor your work samples to each one.

Do the Snap Academies lead to a job at Snap?

Not by any published promise. Snap says its goal is for every scholar to be internship-ready, with a portfolio and practice in technical interviews, but it doesn't guarantee a Snap internship or job and doesn't publish conversion numbers. Treat it as a launchpad for your internship applications.

The 2027 Snap Academies window is expected to open in early March, and it asks for work samples on day one. Use the months before then to finish a project, and if you need one, a remote Externship gives you a portfolio piece to submit.
