Last updated: October 2026
TikTok's summer 2027 internship wave is open now, and it's large. On October 3, 2026, TikTok's two US job boards listed 273 intern requisitions for 2027: 242 on lifeattiktok.com and 31 on careers.tiktokusds.com, the board of the US joint venture created in January 2026. You apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. The main batch went up in the last week of July 2026, and roles were still being added in late September. Two details decide more outcomes than any resume tip. Nearly every summer posting reviews applications on a rolling basis, and 200 of the 242 on the main board cap you at two applications across TikTok and its affiliates worldwide, considered in the order you submit them. In the postings we checked, published pay runs from $23.75 an hour for TikTok Shop business roles to $45 for software engineering in San Jose and $60 for PhD research.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most running 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship is a remote Externship built with TikTok on content and brand work; it isn't a TikTok internship, an application route or a path to an offer. For engineering applicants, the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship builds the agent and LLM skills that show up in TikTok's ML and software postings. Explore all Externships.
What Is a TikTok Internship?
A TikTok internship is a paid, 12-week summer role at TikTok's US offices for students currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's, MBA or PhD, in engineering, machine learning, product, design, data or TikTok Shop and advertising business teams. Postings say interns "participate in social events, learning programs, and development workshops," and some engineering roles assign one well-scoped project with a dedicated mentor and an end-of-internship presentation. Since January 2026, US data protection, algorithm security and trust and safety sit with TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which is majority American-owned with ByteDance retaining 19.9%, per TikTok's newsroom. TikTok global's US entities keep e-commerce, advertising, marketing and product interoperability. That split is why TikTok now hires interns on two separate boards.

When Do TikTok Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Applications for summer 2027 are already open. Requisition timestamps on TikTok's own ATS show the first PhD research roles posted in April 2026, the main engineering and product wave from mid-July with a peak of 75 roles in the week of July 27, and TikTok Shop, advertising and USDS roles added through August and September. Six more USDS roles appeared on September 28 and 29. Last cycle followed the same shape: summer 2026 roles posted from early August 2025, with additions as late as October 8 and November 14, 2025. That's a lead time of roughly 9.5 to 11 months to a mid-May to late-June start. Separately, about 220 US "Project Intern" roles run year-round with a 3-month minimum.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 273 US intern requisitions for 2027 across both boards, all rolling. Choose your two roles first, because the cap counts every application to TikTok and its affiliates worldwide.
More summer 2027 roles may still post; last year's wave added roles as late as mid-November. Rolling review means seats fill as you wait, so don't hold a strong application for a role that might appear later.
Engineering applicants who pass resume screening get a technical online assessment, then interviews; offers go out on a rolling basis. Business roles skip the coding test.
The 12-week internship, with start dates expected between mid-May and late June 2027 based on last year's postings. Interns who aren't fully remote may get a housing allowance.
Applications for summer 2028 expected to open, following the late-July start of the last two waves.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
TikTok's urgency mode is rolling with a hard cap. Of 242 summer 2027 postings on lifeattiktok.com, 240 say "applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so we encourage you to apply early," and none states a closing date. A posting that's been open since July has been filling seats since July. The cap matters more: 200 of the 242 limit candidates to two positions across TikTok and its affiliates globally, "considered in the order they are submitted." Applying fast to the first role you see can use up half your cycle. Decide your two targets on day one, check both boards, then submit both the same week.
Which TikTok Internship Programs Should You Target?
TikTok labels its programs by degree level and runs them across dozens of teams. These are the biggest summer 2027 tracks on the main board, with sample published rates.

|---|---|---|---|
| Software engineering | Backend, frontend, infrastructure, search and e-commerce systems | 12 weeks | $45/hr San Jose; $42.75/hr Seattle |

| USDS Joint Venture | Software, ML and security engineering for US data protection | 12 weeks | careers.tiktokusds.com: $45/hr San Jose; $42.75/hr Seattle |
Search both boards by keyword "intern": lifeattiktok.com and careers.tiktokusds.com share no requisitions. A small set of "2027 Fall" roles and the year-round Project Intern roles sit beside the summer program.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
TikTok sets eligibility per posting rather than for the whole program. The common rules:
• Enrollment: currently pursuing the degree the posting names: bachelor's or master's, MBA, or PhD. Engineering roles ask for computer science or related majors; TikTok Shop roles prefer statistics, communications, e-commerce or marketing.
• Availability: summer roles ask you to commit to 12 weeks in summer 2027 and to state your start and end dates on your resume.
• Application cap: two applications across TikTok and its affiliates worldwide on 200 of 242 summer 2027 postings, processed in submission order.
• Sponsorship: not uniform. 20 of 242 summer 2027 postings say the company doesn't provide sponsorship; the rest don't say. Check your specific posting.
• GPA: no minimum appears in the postings we read.

Do You Need to Speak Mandarin for a TikTok Internship?
Usually not. Only 4 of 242 summer 2027 postings on the main board mention Mandarin or Chinese. On Reddit, some former interns say the language helps on teams with China-based mentors, while others push back that it isn't true for most teams. Treat it as a team-by-team factor, and read the qualifications section of the role you're applying to.
What Skills Does TikTok Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Across the 242 summer 2027 postings on lifeattiktok.com, three skill groups dominate the qualifications sections. Engineering fundamentals: Python, C++, Java or Go plus data structures and algorithms, with search, recommendation and LLM work in the preferred lists. Analytics: statistics and data analysis appear in about half the postings, including most TikTok Shop and ads roles. Ownership and communication: "self-driven" and "proactive" language shows up in 95 postings, and communication in 162.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill below maps to a remote Externship with a finished project you can point to in a TikTok application or interview.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Content and brand strategy | TikTok Shop creator and livestream roles; Global Business Solutions client work | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy (remote Externship, not a TikTok internship) |
| E-commerce data analysis | TikTok Shop business analysis: statistics, e-commerce and marketing majors preferred | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| LLMs and agents | 60 postings name LLMs, generative AI or agents; search + LLM integration roles | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Applied AI and document extraction | Research and applied science roles on GenAI and LLM applications | Pfizer AI-Powered Document Insights & Data Extraction |
| Gen Z consumer insight | TikTok Shop category and campaign roles built around creators and young shoppers | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| Product management | Product Manager Intern roles for content, ads and AI products | BeReal Product Management |
Since TikTok's window is already open, apply first and start an Externship alongside; a project in progress still gives you something specific to discuss in an interview.
What Is the TikTok Application and Interview Process Like?
TikTok doesn't publish an interview format for summer 2027. Here's what the postings and first-hand reports describe:
1. Pick two roles. The cap covers TikTok and its affiliates worldwide, in submission order. Check both boards before choosing.
2. Apply with your dates. Postings ask you to state your availability, including start and end dates, on your resume.
3. Online assessment (engineering). Candidates who pass resume screening get a technical OA; August 2026 applicants on Reddit described HackerRank or a CodeSignal-style test arriving within days.
4. Interviews. Format varies by team. One 2025 intern re-matched for a return offer described a coding round plus a behavioral with the hiring manager.
5. Offer. Rolling, team by team.
Some August 2026 applicants also hit a "Server Request Failed" error on lifeattiktok.com; if that happens, submit a support ticket rather than applying to a different role and burning one of your two slots.
What Students on Reddit Say
TikTok internships get steady discussion on CS forums, with applicants posting OA timing and former interns comparing offers.
Summer 2027 software engineering applicants reported an online assessment within days of applying in early August, usually HackerRank by one account and CodeSignal-style by another. Others said they were screened out without one, even without needing sponsorship.
Two people who had worked at both Amazon and TikTok disagreed: one said TikTok on a resume opened doors almost everywhere, the other described long hours, a China-based mentor and meetings on China time.
A 2025 intern whose own team had no headcount for a return offer was matched with a different team instead, then given one coding round and a behavioral interview with the new hiring manager.
How Do You Stand Out When You Only Get Two Applications?
TikTok doesn't publish an applicant count, a class size or a return-offer rate, and the 273 requisitions are postings, not seats. What you control is how you spend the two applications. First, match the role to your degree level. Many research and ML postings are PhD-only, and TikTok Shop has 61 summer roles open to business, statistics and marketing majors. Second, mirror the posting's language list. Engineering postings name specific languages (Python in 89, C++ in 78), so put the ones you've shipped code in at the top of your resume. Third, for TikTok Shop roles, bring an analysis with numbers behind it, such as a category or creator performance breakdown, since those postings prefer statistics, e-commerce and marketing majors.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 TikTok internship?
No. The summer 2026 internships have already run. Applications for summer 2027 are open now, with 273 US intern requisitions for 2027 across lifeattiktok.com and careers.tiktokusds.com on October 3, 2026. If you want to start sooner, TikTok's year-round Project Intern roles need a 3-month minimum.
When do TikTok summer 2027 internship applications open?
They're already open. TikTok's main summer 2027 wave posted in the last week of July 2026, and roles kept appearing through late September. There's no published deadline, and postings review applications on a rolling basis, so apply as early as you can. No summer 2027 track has closed so far.
How many TikTok internships can I apply to?
Two, on most postings. 200 of the 242 summer 2027 postings on lifeattiktok.com limit candidates to two applications across TikTok and its affiliates globally, considered in the order you submit them. Choose your two roles before you apply to either, and check the USDS board too.
How much do TikTok interns make?
It depends on role and city. In the postings we checked: $45 an hour for software engineering in San Jose, $42.75 in Seattle, $57 to $60 for PhD research and ML, $33.25 for a PM role in Los Angeles, $40 for an MBA TikTok Shop role, and $23.75 to $25 for undergraduate TikTok Shop roles.
What is the TikTok internship interview process?
Engineering applicants who pass resume screening get a technical online assessment, then interviews with the team. TikTok doesn't publish the round count. One 2025 intern described a coding round plus a behavioral with the hiring manager. Business roles such as TikTok Shop skip the coding assessment.
What's the difference between lifeattiktok.com and careers.tiktokusds.com?
They're separate employers' boards. Since January 2026, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC handles US data protection, algorithm security and trust and safety, and posts on careers.tiktokusds.com, with 31 intern roles for 2027. TikTok Shop, advertising and most product and engineering roles stay on lifeattiktok.com.
Does TikTok sponsor visas for interns?
It depends on the posting. Twenty of the 242 summer 2027 postings on lifeattiktok.com say the company doesn't provide sponsorship or immigration benefits; the rest don't address it. Read the qualifications of the specific role before you spend one of your two applications on it.
Do TikTok interns get return offers?
Some do, but TikTok doesn't publish a rate. First-hand Reddit reports tie return offers to team headcount, and one 2025 intern without a slot on their own team was re-matched to another team after a coding round and a behavioral interview. TikTok also hires 2027 graduates in the same cycle.
TikTok's summer 2027 roles are open and rolling, so choose your two applications this week. A remote Externship gives you a finished project to talk about while you wait on the assessment.
