Last updated: October 2026

ScottMadden's internship is easy to miss because the firm never advertises it. On October 12, 2026, its job board listed four openings, all for experienced consultants, and no internship appears in the archived copies of that board we checked, from 2019 to 2024. The internship exists anyway. ScottMadden's careers page describes an annual orientation "for interns and new consultants," and a current partner and a manager both started at the firm as MBA interns.

The role is called Summer Consultant, and every intern we could document was an MBA or other graduate student. An undergraduate internship is unproven: we found no posting, page or profile that shows one. In plain words: you apply during the 2026 to 2027 school year through your business school or a referral, and you intern in summer 2027. There's no online form to fill in.

What Is a ScottMadden Internship?

A ScottMadden internship is a summer consulting role, titled Summer Consultant, at ScottMadden, a management consulting firm with two practices: Energy, and Corporate & Shared Services. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, it also has offices in Atlanta and Framingham, Massachusetts. It ranks #31 on the Vault Consulting 50 North America for 2026, down from #29 in 2025.

Interns work inside project teams, which ScottMadden's job postings describe as "typically composed of three or four consultants and a partner." One MBA Summer Consultant in Atlanta told Rice Business: "I engage in client meetings, assist in organizing workshops, create materials and propose ideas to drive value through cultural change." Interns also attend New Hire Orientation, three days on "consulting best practices, AI-enabled project work, and effective deliverable development." What ScottMadden doesn't publish: dates, eligibility rules, class size or pay.

When Do ScottMadden Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

ScottMadden publishes no internship dates, and the role has never been seen on its job board, so there's no posting history to project from. What exists is a short list of dated facts. Past interns' public profiles list the role as running from June to August. A student publicly announced a Summer Consultant offer for summer 2025 in early February 2025, about four months before the start. An archived 2023 version of the firm's site said it had "recruited MBAs from leading business schools for more than 35 years" and named Emory, Georgia Tech and UNC. Today's careers page says roles may be posted "at select universities, and through recruiting events we attend," naming the National Black MBA Association and MBA Veterans Association conferences.

Recruiting for summer 2027 is therefore expected to run from fall 2026 to about February 2027. That's a projection from a single data point, so treat every date below as low confidence.

No internship is posted, and none is expected to be. The job board lists four roles, all for experienced consultants. MBA first-years interested in summer 2027 should start conversations now: career office, alumni at the firm, conference contacts.

Campus and referral interviews for summer 2027 Summer Consultants are expected in this window. ScottMadden hasn't confirmed dates; this is projected from one summer 2025 offer.

Offers for summer 2027 are expected by around this point. The one dated precedent is a summer 2025 offer that was public in early February 2025.

Full-time Associate offers for after graduation. No rate is published, but one current partner interned in 2014 and returned in 2015 as a full-time associate.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

At ScottMadden there's no application week to hit, because there's no application page. The firm fills its Summer Consultant seats through business schools, conferences and referrals, and nothing we found states a deadline or says offers are made on a rolling basis. So the usual advice changes shape: start the conversations early instead of waiting for a posting.

The one first-hand account of getting the internship describes "five coffee chats with employees and two interviews," with referrals leading to a director who moved the process along. Employees told Vault that the presentation prompt can be left vague on purpose, so candidates will contact people at the firm. And the only dated offer we know of was already public in early February. If you wait for a job listing in spring 2027, the seats may be gone and you won't have seen them open.

Which ScottMadden Internship Programs Should You Target?

ScottMadden has one documented internship. The other rows show how the firm hires at each level, since undergraduates ask where they fit.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

ScottMadden publishes no eligibility rules for interns. These points separate what the firm states from what the record of past interns shows.

• Degree level: no written rule. Every documented intern was an MBA or other graduate student, and the interns profiled had several years of work experience before business school.

• Work authorization (stated): "All applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. with no current or future requirements for company work visa sponsorship." International students should ask the recruiting team how that applies to a summer role.

• Schools: an archived 2023 page named Emory Goizueta, Georgia Tech Scheller and UNC Kenan-Flagler. That page no longer exists, and interns have also come from Duke and Rice.

• GPA: not published.

• Location: Raleigh and Atlanta are documented for interns. The firm describes a hybrid workplace, with travel based on client and project needs.

Does ScottMadden Have an Undergraduate Internship?

We can't show that it does. The job board has no intern posting, none appears in the archived copies from 2019 to 2024, and every intern we could trace was in an MBA or other graduate program. That isn't proof that no undergraduate has ever interned there. It means nothing public supports the claim, so we won't make it. If you're an undergraduate, the documented route is full-time: Analyst is the most junior level on the firm's ladder, and its interview includes an in-person case exercise. Ask the recruiting contacts on the careers page whether an undergraduate internship exists before you plan around one.

What Skills Does ScottMadden Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

There's no internship posting to read, so this section draws on the firm's careers page, its interview format and past interns' accounts. The clearest signal is the interview itself: Associate candidates give a presentation, and employees told Vault they had about a week to build it and 45 minutes to deliver it. The careers page describes Associates as "responsible for research, data analysis, client interviews, preparation of deliverables." One MBA Summer Consultant credited finance, financial accounting and business communication courses for preparing for the work. Domain knowledge matters too: the firm's work is split between energy and utilities and shared services across finance, HR, IT and supply chain. Orientation now covers "AI-enabled project work."

Note: We haven't drawn a skills chart for ScottMadden. The internship has never appeared on the firm's job board, so there's no intern posting to count, and the four roles posted today are for experienced consultants. The skills above come from the firm's careers page, Vault's employee survey and one past intern's published account, read in October 2026.

What Is the ScottMadden Application and Interview Process Like?

ScottMadden's careers page describes one process that "varies slightly by role and level." Past candidates fill in the rest:

1. Get on the radar. There's no intern posting, so the first step is a campus recruiter, a conference conversation or a referral. One MBA intern described five coffee chats with employees before any interview.

2. Application and online assessments. The firm uses "short online assessments designed to evaluate cognitive abilities and personality traits."

3. Behavioral interviews. "A series of behavioral interviews focused on the core competencies needed to succeed as a consultant." The MBA intern had two: one with HR and one with a partner.

4. Case or presentation. Analyst candidates do an in-person case exercise; Associate candidates give a presentation. Employees told Vault they had a week to prepare for a 45-minute slot.

5. Offer. Timing isn't published. One summer 2025 offer was public by early February 2025.

Sample questions employees shared with Vault include describing a time you missed a deadline; our behavioral interview guide covers how to structure those answers.

What Interns and Employees Say

Reddit only mentions ScottMadden in passing, in lists of energy consulting firms, so these cards use one past intern's published account and Vault's employee survey.

An MBA Summer Consultant in Atlanta said the internship came through five coffee chats with employees and two interviews, one with HR and one with a partner. Referrals led to a director who helped move the process along.

How Do You Stand Out for a ScottMadden Internship?

Three moves. First, stop refreshing the job board and use your school. Ask your MBA career office whether ScottMadden recruits on campus, find alumni at the firm, and look for it at the NBMBAA and MBA Veterans Association conferences, which the careers page names. Second, network on purpose. The one first-hand account lists five coffee chats before two interviews, and employees say the presentation prompt is left vague so candidates will ask questions. Reaching out is part of the test. Third, pick a practice and prepare to present. Decide whether you fit Energy (utilities, the grid, rates and regulation) or Corporate & Shared Services (finance, HR, IT and supply chain operations), and have one past project you can present clearly in 45 minutes. Prior industry experience in either area is the common thread among the interns profiled. Check work authorization first, since the firm doesn't sponsor visas. ScottMadden publishes no class size, applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 ScottMadden internship?

No. Summer 2026 has passed, and ScottMadden never posted that role publicly. The next cycle is summer 2027, and it isn't posted either: on October 12, 2026 the firm's job board listed four roles, all for experienced consultants. Recruiting for Summer Consultants runs through business schools, conferences and referrals, expected from fall 2026.

Does ScottMadden have a summer internship?

Yes, a small one that isn't advertised. The role is called Summer Consultant, and every intern we could document was an MBA or other graduate student. The firm's careers page describes an annual orientation "for interns and new consultants," and a current partner and a manager both began as MBA interns, in 2014 and 2020.

When do ScottMadden internship applications open for summer 2027?

ScottMadden publishes no dates and doesn't post the role. The only dated evidence is a summer 2025 offer that was public by early February 2025. On that basis, recruiting for summer 2027 is expected to run from fall 2026 to about February 2027. Treat that as a low-confidence estimate and start conversations now.

Where do I apply for a ScottMadden internship?

Not on the job board, which lists only experienced roles. The careers page says positions may be posted at select universities and through recruiting events, and it names the National Black MBA Association and MBA Veterans Association conferences. Start with your MBA career office, alumni at the firm, or the recruiting contacts on the careers page.

Does ScottMadden hire undergraduate interns?

We found no evidence of an undergraduate internship: no posting, no program page and no profile of an undergraduate intern. That doesn't prove one has never existed, so ask the recruiting team. The documented undergraduate route is full-time, at the Analyst level, where the interview includes an in-person case exercise.

How much do ScottMadden interns get paid?

ScottMadden doesn't publish intern pay. There's no internship posting to read, and the firm's experienced consultant postings don't show a pay range either. We don't quote modelled salary estimates from job sites. If you receive an offer, the offer letter is the only reliable source, so ask the recruiter directly during the process.

What is the ScottMadden interview process?

The careers page lists an application with short online cognitive and personality assessments, a series of behavioral interviews, and then a case or presentation by level: an in-person case exercise for Analysts and a presentation for Associates. Employees told Vault they had about a week to prepare a 45-minute presentation.

Do ScottMadden interns get full-time offers?

ScottMadden publishes no conversion rate, but the pattern is visible in its own bios. A current partner interned in 2014 and returned in 2015 as a full-time associate, and a manager who interned in 2020 followed the same path. Other consultants describe returning as associates after a summer at the firm.

ScottMadden's internship runs on relationships, not postings, so start conversations this fall. Bring something to present: a remote Externship gives you a finished strategy or operations project you can walk a partner through.
