Last updated: October 2026
NiSource, the Merrillville, Indiana parent of NIPSCO and the Columbia Gas companies, posted 32 paid summer-2027 intern roles between 31 August and 25 September 2026, and its internship program page says plainly that postings close on 2 October. That date has passed. As of 3 October 2026, the only intern roles still taking applications are two Columbia Gas of Virginia positions in Chester, Virginia, which close on 6 October 2026. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and at NiSource the fall window lasts about four weeks.
If you missed it, aim at summer 2028, with postings expected around late August to September 2027. Two things to know before then: every intern posting requires you to live within 50 miles of the reporting location, and every one publishes a pay range, from $17.20 to $33.00.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks (range 4–11) at 5 to 10 hours a week, so one fits easily into the year before NiSource's next window. The Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship builds the operational-technology security skills NiSource's IT Network interns work on, and the Amazon Fulfillment Center People Analytics Externship practices the data and operations analysis behind its People Analytics and Operational Excellence roles. What Is a NiSource Internship?
A NiSource internship is a paid, 12-week summer program at the utility holding company behind NIPSCO in Indiana and the Columbia Gas companies in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, open to students entering their junior or senior year. Most roles are engineering (electric, substation, generation, renewables and gas field work), with the rest in IT, analytics, finance, HR, government affairs, communications and sustainability.
NiSource serves nearly four million natural gas and electric customers across six states with approximately 7,700 employees. The program page pairs each intern with a leader and an advisor in their department and adds workshops on the company and the energy industry, volunteering and networking. Interns are hired by a specific subsidiary, so the posting tells you whether you'd work for NIPSCO, a Columbia Gas company or NiSource Corporate Services.

When Do NiSource Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
These dates are measured, not projected. NiSource's Workday API shows the summer-2027 reqs posted from 31 August to 25 September 2026, each with a posting end date of 3 October and the line that a posting closes the day before its end date, which matches the program page's 2 October cutoff. The two Columbia Gas of Virginia roles end a few days later, closing on 6 October. That's a window of about four weeks, roughly eight months ahead of a May start.
September looks like a pattern. NiSource ran a recruiting push on 8 September 2025 for the summer-2026 class, and a student on Reddit had a NiSource screening email by 25 September 2024. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around late August to September 2027 and close around early October 2027. The prior-year close dates couldn't be confirmed, so treat that projection as medium confidence.
The summer-2027 window has closed for 30 of NiSource's 32 intern roles (cutoff 2 October 2026). The Columbia Gas of Virginia Community Engagement and Regulatory Affairs roles in Chester, VA close on 6 October 2026, if you live within 50 miles. Everyone else: this is the year to build proof for summer 2028.

Applications for summer 2028 expected to open around late August to September 2027 and close around early October 2027. Apply in the first week and pick a location within 50 miles of where you live.
Twelve weeks starting in May, with a leader and advisor in your department, industry workshops and volunteering. The summer-2027 class starts May 2027; the next class you can still join starts May 2028.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
NiSource runs a hard deadline, not rolling review. The program page names the date ("Postings will close on October 2nd"), and every posting repeats that it closes the day before its posting end date. Some postings may stay visible on the board for a day after the cutoff, but the date NiSource states is the one to plan around.
For summer 2028, a four-week window leaves no room to start your resume after the postings appear. Check the board in the last week of August 2027, have your materials ready, and apply in the first week.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
NiSource's rules are unusually specific, and the residency line catches most out-of-state applicants:
• Class year: "students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027", so current sophomores and juniors for the summer-2027 class.
• Residency: every intern posting says candidates "must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location to be eligible." Pick roles near your home or school address.
• Work authorization: you must be legally authorized to work in the US and "must not require employer sponsorship now or in the future."
• GPA: 3.0 is required on some postings (Operations, Operational Excellence, NIPSCO engineering) and preferred on others (HR, People Analytics, FP&A).
• Engineering roles: a current student in an ABET-accredited four-year engineering program with at least one year completed, plus a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Schedule: 40 hours a week on most roles; Community Engagement and Asset Management are part time.

Is the 50-Mile Rule Really a Hard Cutoff?
Treat it as one. It appears on all 32 intern postings, in the same eligibility sentence, and NiSource doesn't mention relocation or housing support anywhere. That makes this a local-hire program: the realistic targets are roles within commuting distance of your permanent or school address.
The map is wider than it looks, though. Engineering roles alone span seven Indiana sites plus Columbus and York, and the government affairs role sits in Washington, DC, so check every location before you rule NiSource out.
What Skills Does NiSource Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
NiSource's postings read like utility work: clear communication with internal and external customers, teamwork, analytical problem solving and Microsoft Office show up on almost every role. Engineering postings add AutoCAD sketches, field measurements, job-order estimates and safety consciousness. Analytics roles ask for Excel, Power BI, Python or SQL, and data visualization.
The most distinctive asks aren't technical. Fifteen postings ask for a valid driver's license, most of them engineering roles that include field measurements.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?

vs 207 in August
Engineering employers posted most of their summer-2027 roles in September, so a NiSource applicant who missed 2 October can still find live engineering internships elsewhere now, then target NiSource's late-August 2027 opening.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
The non-engineering skills map onto remote Externships you can finish well before the summer-2028 window opens.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Security for operational systems | IT Software Engineer: develop and run a cyber incident response scenario exercise | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| People and operations analytics | People Analytics: "data visualization, survey analysis, and data cleaning and validation" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Environmental policy and data | Sustainability: "Support data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts to internal and external stakeholders" | ARCEH Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
| Data structuring and SQL | IT Business Analytics: "acquiring, cleansing and structuring data from multiple sources" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Financial planning and analysis | Finance FP&A intern, accounting, finance or economics majors | Attronica FP&A and Private Company Valuation |
Pick the row that matches the NiSource role you'll target in 2027, and finish the project before late August so it's on the resume you submit in week one.
What Is the NiSource Application and Interview Process Like?
NiSource doesn't publish its interview steps, so this combines its posting language with community reports:
1. Apply on Workday before the deadline. Each posting notes that by applying you may also be considered for other roles that match your skills.
2. Screening email. In a September 2024 Reddit thread, a student received a Workday email saying they'd been selected for a NiSource summer internship, ahead of a scheduled Teams call. Commenters read it as the first HR step, not an offer.
3. Screening call. A former NiSource engineer in the same thread described the call as formal, with offer letters following it.
4. Offer. NiSource doesn't publish when offers go out.
5. Summer program. Twelve weeks from May, with a multi-day launch, workshops, a leader and an advisor, and volunteering.
These are community accounts, not NiSource policy. For engineering roles, be ready to talk about a project where you collected and analyzed data, and to explain what safety consciousness looks like on a job site.
What Students on Reddit Say
NiSource intern threads are few, so the cards below mix one intern-specific thread with two Columbus employee threads about the wider company.
A student got a NiSource Workday email in late September 2024 saying they'd been selected for a summer internship, before any interview. Most commenters said it was the first HR step, not an offer. A former NiSource engineer said the follow-up call is formal, offers come after it, and while a job isn't guaranteed, NiSource usually tries to find interns a spot.
Columbus employees split on NiSource in 2025: some called it okay or even good, others described stress and turnover. Several mentioned a slow hiring process and an office schedule moving to three days a week in September 2025. Not intern-specific, but a fair read on the culture.
A longtime employee at the Columbus Arena District office called NiSource an okay employer in 2023, with Tuesday and Wednesday as office days, parking covered and benefits that had improved over the previous couple of years.
How Do You Stand Out for a NiSource Internship?
Three moves, built around how NiSource actually hires.
First, apply local and apply early. The 50-mile rule means your competition is the pool near one site, not the whole country, and the four-week window rewards whoever is ready on day one.
Second, show you understand the utility. Name the subsidiary you'd join, NIPSCO or a Columbia Gas company, and one thing it does: electric generation in Indiana, or gas distribution in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Virginia. For engineering roles, mention AutoCAD, Excel and any field or safety experience.
Third, bring evidence for the non-engineering roles. A People Analytics or Sustainability applicant with one finished data project stands out from a list of coursework. NiSource doesn't publish an applicant count, class size or conversion rate, so there's no acceptance figure to quote here.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 NiSource internship?
No. Summer 2026 has ended, and NiSource's summer-2027 applications closed on 2 October 2026 for 30 of its 32 intern roles. The two Columbia Gas of Virginia roles in Chester, Virginia, accept applications until 6 October 2026. Everyone else should plan for summer-2028 postings, expected around late August to September 2027.
When do NiSource internship applications open for summer 2028?
Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around late August to September 2027 and close around early October 2027. That projection comes from NiSource's September recruiting in 2024, 2025 and 2026; only the 2026 close date is confirmed, so watch the Workday board from late August.
Are NiSource internships paid?
Yes. NiSource says all of its internships are paid, and each summer-2027 posting published a range between $17.20 and $33.00. The postings don't state the unit, but the figures are consistent with hourly pay. Engineering roles mostly listed $18.80 to $31.70 and IT roles $19.80 to $33.00.
Can I apply for a NiSource internship if I live far away?
Probably not. Every summer-2027 intern posting said candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location to be eligible, and NiSource doesn't mention relocation or housing support. Look for a role near your permanent or school address; the sites span Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, DC.
Who is eligible for a NiSource internship?
Students entering their junior or senior year in the fall after the internship, authorized to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future, and living within 50 miles of the role. Many postings require or prefer a 3.0 GPA, and engineering roles require an ABET-accredited four-year program.
How long is the NiSource internship?
Twelve weeks, starting in May. Most roles are 40 hours a week, while the Community Engagement and Asset Management roles were posted as part time. Interns get a leader and an advisor in their department, a multi-day launch, industry workshops and volunteering opportunities throughout the summer.
Does NiSource sponsor visas for interns?
No. Every summer-2027 intern posting said candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require employer sponsorship now or in the future. International students who need sponsorship at any point aren't eligible for these roles.
Does NiSource hire interns full time?
Often, but not by guarantee. NiSource doesn't publish a conversion rate. A former NiSource engineer on Reddit said the internship isn't a guarantee of a job afterward but that the company usually tries to find a spot for interns, which is a community report rather than company policy.
If you missed the 2 October deadline, you have about eleven months until NiSource's next window. Use them to finish a remote Externship so your summer-2028 application leads with a project, not just coursework.
