Neuralink's internship application doesn't open with a cover letter. It asks for three separate examples of "evidence of exceptional ability," then asks which season you want: Fall 2026, Winter 2027 (January to April) or Summer 2027 (May to August), the options its hiring team says it's "actively interviewing for." On 3 October 2026, Neuralink's careers board listed 18 open internships, all in South San Francisco or Austin, and 16 of them published the same pay: $35 an hour.
In plain words: Neuralink hires interns on a rolling basis for three seasons a year, so you don't wait for a fall wave. If you apply this fall, you can aim for winter 2027 or summer 2027 on the same application.

All 18 Neuralink intern reqs are open now with no deadline. They're standing postings, not a once-a-year wave, and the form currently offers Winter 2027 and Summer 2027 (plus Fall 2026, which has already started).
Neuralink asks for proof of work outside class, so a finished project matters more than a course list. Externships are short, remote programs where you complete a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship fits Neuralink's software and ML roles, and the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship fits its embedded and connected-device work. What Is a Neuralink Internship?
A Neuralink internship is a paid, full-time, onsite engineering placement at the brain-computer interface company, lasting one season (fall, winter or summer). Neuralink's reqs describe its mission as building devices that "enable a bi-directional interface with the brain" to restore movement and sight. Interns join a specific team rather than a rotation: the robotics software team writing code for the surgical robot, the implant team working on the device's SDK and charger tooling, chip designers working on neural recording silicon, or mechanical engineers on brain-interface hardware. The company raised a $650 million Series E in June 2025 and said at the time that five people with severe paralysis were using its device. There's no branded program name. Internships sit in their own "Internships" department on Neuralink's Greenhouse board, and every req is open to the season you choose.

When Do Neuralink Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Neuralink doesn't run a fall application wave. Its intern reqs are standing postings that stay up across seasons: the oldest live one, Software Engineer Intern, Infrastructure, was first published in June 2024, and the newest, IT Systems Administrator Intern, in May 2026. What changes is the season dropdown on the application form. On 3 October 2026, 17 of 18 forms offered Fall 2026, Winter 2027 and Summer 2027, and the Electrical Engineer Intern, Robotics and Surgery Engineering form offered only Winter 2027 and Summer 2027. Applicants on Reddit report an interview invite about a month after applying, which puts the lead time at roughly two to four months before a season starts. Applications for summer 2027 are open now; applications for winter 2027 are open now too, and they're the nearer door.
Applications are open right now. All 18 intern reqs are live, and the form lets you choose Winter 2027 (January to April) or Summer 2027 (May to August). Fall 2026 is still listed, but that term began in September, so it's a long shot.
The practical window for winter 2027. With invites reported about a month after applying, an application in October or early November leaves time for interviews before a January start. Prepare your three exceptional-ability examples before you open the form.
Interviewing for summer 2027 continues on the same reqs. Expect very technical interviews, and for some software roles an emailed take-home challenge after you apply.
The Winter 2027 season runs full time and onsite in South San Francisco or Austin. Later seasons, such as Fall 2027, are expected to appear on the same reqs as the dropdown rolls forward.
The Summer 2027 season, May to August, at $35 an hour for most roles. Neuralink doesn't publish an intern conversion rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The urgency here is about seasons, not a deadline. No Neuralink intern req has a closing date, and the form's own note says the season options reflect what the hiring team is interviewing for "currently." That cuts both ways: an option can disappear once a team has filled its winter seats. The Electrical Engineer Intern, Robotics and Surgery Engineering form already lists only Winter 2027 and Summer 2027.
If you want winter 2027, apply in October. A month to an interview invite, then interview rounds, eats most of the runway to January. If you're aiming at summer 2027, applying now still puts you early in that season's interviewing rather than in the spring crowd.
Which Neuralink Internship Programs Should You Target?
Neuralink's 18 open internships cluster into five groups. Every one is a separate req, so apply to the specific team, not the company.
| Track | Open reqs (3 Oct 2026) | Location | Pay / skills named in the reqs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software & ML | SWE Intern: BCI Applications, Implant, Infrastructure, Internal Apps, Robotics; Machine Learning Engineer Intern (6) | South SF; 4 also Austin | $35/hr; Python, C++, Rust, Linux |
| Embedded & firmware | Embedded Software Engineer Intern, Implant; Firmware Engineer Intern, Robotics (2) | South SF; 1 also Austin | $35/hr; C/C++, embedded systems, wireless and device security |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Neuralink sets requirements per req, and they're stricter on applied experience than on grades:
• Enrollment: most reqs ask for a current student; the Manufacturing and SWE BCI Applications reqs say "currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree," and the Mechanical Robotics req accepts Bachelor's or Master's students.
• Applied experience: several reqs set a floor of hands-on technical work outside class, such as "Minimum 3 months" on the Analog and Mixed-Signal IC req and 6 or 9+ months on others. Labs, project teams, open source and personal projects count.
• Exceptional ability: the application asks for three separate examples, and 5 of the 18 reqs also list "evidence of exceptional ability" as a qualification.
• Work authorization: the form asks whether you're authorized to work in the US and whether you'll need sponsorship. None of the 18 reqs states a citizenship, clearance or no-sponsorship rule.
• GPA: no minimum appears on any intern req.

Is a Strong GPA Enough?
Not on its own, because Neuralink barely asks about it. No intern req names a GPA, while several put a number on applied experience instead: 3 months, 6 months or 9+ months of technical work outside the classroom. One engineer on Reddit with a GPA they called too low for career-fair interviews says three internships and a picture-heavy project portfolio got them offers that included Neuralink. Treat the three exceptional-ability fields as the real screen, and fill each with a different, specific build.
What Skills Does Neuralink Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Neuralink's intern reqs are short, but the responsibilities and qualifications sections repeat a clear pattern across 18 postings:
• Building and testing: almost every req is about making something work in the real world, from surgery-ready robot software to test fixtures, and debugging or testing comes up in 14 of 18.
• Code close to hardware: Python or C/C++ in 10, Linux in 6, Rust in 5, and embedded or firmware work in 7.
• Hardware design: circuits and electronics in 7, FPGA in 5 and CAD in 4.
Communication shows up in 11, usually as working across electrical, mechanical and software teams, and 5 reqs list "evidence of exceptional ability" as a qualification.

Pick the row closest to the req you'll apply to, and write the finished project up as one of your three exceptional-ability examples.
What Is the Neuralink Application and Interview Process Like?
Neuralink's process starts with an unusual form and gets technical fast:
1. Apply on the req. Upload a resume (cover letter optional), then answer the form: three exceptional-ability examples, prior internship or co-op, graduation year, work authorization and sponsorship, an onsite acknowledgement, no-relocation acknowledgement, location, intern season and ideal start date.
2. Possible take-home. One software applicant on Reddit says Neuralink emailed a coding challenge right after they applied.
3. Interview invite. An applicant reports hearing back about a month after applying.
4. Technical interviews. A mechanical engineering intern candidate describes the interview as very technical, with two or three questions on nearly every core course in the major.
5. Offer and season. You're hired into one season, full time and onsite, in South San Francisco or Austin.
Neuralink doesn't publish its interview structure, so treat the Reddit accounts as individual reports rather than a fixed format.
What Students on Reddit Say
There isn't much intern talk about Neuralink on Reddit, but the threads that exist are first-hand.
A mechanical engineering applicant invited to interview for a summer internship in Austin says the interview was extremely technical, with a few questions on basically every class in the major. Another applicant in the thread got their invite about a month after applying.
A software applicant says Neuralink emailed them a project-style coding challenge right after they applied, and they chose not to do it because it would take as long as applying to dozens of other companies. Budget real time for it if you get one.
An engineer whose GPA kept them out of career-fair interviews says three internships, cold emails and a short, picture-heavy project portfolio led to offers including Neuralink. Their advice: know every resume line in depth and put a number on each one.
How Do You Stand Out at Neuralink?
Three moves, all about evidence.
First, write three different exceptional-ability examples. They're separate required fields, so one project stretched three ways reads as one. Use a build, a test or debugging story, and something you did outside class that nobody assigned.
Second, match the team, not the brand. The robotics software req talks about surgery-ready code, the implant reqs about firmware and tooling, the IC reqs about silicon. Name the req's own work in your examples.
Third, put numbers on your projects. Several reqs measure experience in months outside the classroom, so state how long you worked on each project and what it achieved.
Be ready for the pace, too: the Internal Apps req says 60-hour weeks aren't uncommon. Neuralink doesn't publish an intern conversion rate. Its reqs say the company advances people who have an outsized impact, but that line sits in the full-time benefits text, not in anything about interns.

When does Neuralink hire interns?
Year-round. Its 18 intern reqs are standing postings with no deadline, and you choose your season on the form. As of October 2026 the open seasons are Winter 2027 and Summer 2027. Applicants report an interview invite about a month after applying, so apply two to four months before your season.
How much do Neuralink interns make?
Neuralink pays $35 an hour on 16 of its 18 open intern reqs, from software to chip design. The IT Systems Administrator and Manufacturing interns are listed at $25 an hour. The benefits list on the reqs excludes interns from equity, parental leave and flexible time off, but not from medical coverage or meals.
Does Neuralink pay for relocation or housing?
No. Every Neuralink intern application states that it doesn't offer relocation assistance to interns, and the roles are onsite in South San Francisco or Austin, so plan housing yourself before you accept. The reqs also note that the 401(k) plan excludes interns until they've worked 1,000 hours.
Where are Neuralink internships located?
All 18 open intern reqs list South San Francisco, California, and 9 of them also list Austin, Texas. Every internship is onsite and full time, and the form asks you to confirm both. Choose your preferred location on the application if the req lists two.
What does evidence of exceptional ability mean on the application?
It's three separate required fields where you describe work that shows unusual skill. Neuralink's reqs point to labs, research, project teams, open source and personal projects, and several set a floor of 3, 6 or 9+ months of hands-on work outside class. Use three distinct, specific examples.
Is the Neuralink intern interview hard?
Applicants say yes. A mechanical engineering candidate described the interview as very technical, with two or three questions on almost every core course. Some software applicants receive an emailed coding challenge after applying. Neuralink doesn't publish its interview format, so treat these as individual reports.
Can international students apply for Neuralink internships?
The reqs don't rule it out. None of the 18 intern reqs states a citizenship, clearance or no-sponsorship requirement, but the form asks whether you're authorized to work in the US and whether you'll ever need sponsorship. Answer honestly and check your own work authorization for the season you choose.
Neuralink's reqs are open today, and winter 2027 is the nearest door. Apply now, and use the time before interviews to finish a remote Externship project you can cite in one of the three exceptional-ability fields.
