The NCAA national office in Indianapolis hires interns through one program, the Postgraduate Internship Program, and it's for recent graduates, not undergraduates: you need a bachelor's or master's degree from a four-year NCAA member school by the 14 June 2027 start. In plain words: you apply in August of your senior year, and the 2027–28 window already closed on 4 September 2026.
This page covers the NCAA's national office only, not athletic departments at member schools, which hire their own interns. As of 17 October 2026 the national office's job board lists eight postings and no internships. The next window, for the class starting around June 2028, is expected to open in early August 2027.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, and unlike the NCAA's graduates-only program you can start one as a current student this month. What Is an NCAA Internship?
An NCAA internship, in this guide, means the NCAA Postgraduate Internship Program (PGIP): a paid, full-time, in-person, one-year internship at the national office in Indianapolis, with 45 positions across 12 departments. It has run since 1988 and is designed for recent college graduates. Interns join one department, work on projects and visit member schools, conference offices and affiliate organizations during the year.
The NCAA says over 40 former interns now work at the national office in full-time roles. Athletic department internships at member schools, conference offices and championship host sites hire separately and aren't covered here. We found no undergraduate, summer or semester internship at the national office.

When Do NCAA Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
The NCAA runs one application window a year, and it's short. For the 2027–28 class, applications opened at 8 a.m. ET on 3 August 2026, an information webinar ran on 18 August and the window closed at 5 p.m. ET on 4 September. Candidates are notified in November 2026 and final offers go out in December. The class starts 14 June 2027, about ten months after applications opened.
Only the current year's dates are on an official page, so the 2028–29 window (early August to early September 2027) is a projection from one cycle. Treat it as low-to-medium confidence and check the program page in July.
The 2027–28 window closed on 4 September 2026. Departments are reviewing applications and running their own interviews, with candidate notification in November. If you graduate by June 2027 and didn't apply, you missed this class; the next opens in August 2027.
Prepare the materials the program asks for: a resume, official transcripts, professional references and short answers about your career interests. Decide which three departments fit you, and note that no athletics background is required.
Applications for the 2028–29 class are expected, based on 3 August to 4 September in 2026. Juniors graduating in spring 2028 apply in this window, because the degree must be complete by the start date. The 2026 window closed at 5 p.m. ET on 4 September, and we found no sign of late entries.
Candidate notification and offers are expected on this year's pattern: notification in November, final offers in December.
The 2028–29 class is expected to start in mid-June in Indianapolis, as the 2027–28 class does on 14 June 2027. The class runs about a year, and relocation is at the intern's expense.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
The NCAA's window has a published cutoff and, as far as we can tell, no late entry. The 2026 window ran about one month, from 8 a.m. ET on 3 August to 5 p.m. ET on 4 September, and each department reviews applications independently. That makes this a hard deadline, not a rolling process.
Because you can pick up to three departments in a single application, the work is in preparing materials, not in racing a first-come queue. Gather transcripts and references in July and submit complete, well before the final afternoon.
Which NCAA Internship Programs Should You Target?
The program has 12 departments: Administrative Services, Business Performance, Championships and Alliances, Communications, Eligibility Center, Enforcement, Executive Affairs, Governance and Member Services, Inclusion, Education and Community Engagement, Legal Affairs, Research and the Sport Science Institute. These are the ones with the most detail on the NCAA's pages.
| Department | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Performance | Data science work | One year, from 14 June 2027 | Names SQL and Tableau |
| Championships and Alliances | Eight specialized roles, including operations, marketing, social media, corporate relations and the Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments | One year | Largest named set of roles |
| Communications | Four roles: branding, creative and digital, external communications, and internal and member communications | One year | Content for NCAA.org, social media and media relations |
| Research | Survey design, data analysis and data visualization | One year | Analytics-heavy |
| Governance and Member Services | Rules interpretation, waivers and reinstatement cases | One year | Member-facing policy work |
| Legal Affairs | Contracts, intellectual property enforcement, data privacy and discovery | One year | Legal-adjacent project work |
The full list and each department's page are on the NCAA program page. Applicants may select up to three departments in one application.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
From the NCAA's program page for the 2027–28 class:
• Degree: a bachelor's or master's degree from a four-year NCAA member institution by the internship start date, 14 June 2027. This is a postgraduate program, so current undergraduates can't hold it.
• Prior NCAA service: you can't be a current or former NCAA national office intern or employee.
• Work authorization: you must be legally authorized to work in the US; F-1 graduates may apply through Optional Practical Training.
• Background: no age restriction and no sports-specific degree; athletics department experience and former student-athlete status aren't required.
• Relocation: required, and in person; applicants plan their own move to Indianapolis. GPA: not stated.

Can Current Undergraduates Apply?
Only if you will hold your degree by the start date, so in practice seniors apply in August of senior year. A senior graduating in spring 2027 had to apply by 4 September 2026. We found no undergraduate, summer or semester internship on the NCAA's pages or on its national office job board, which listed eight postings and no internships on 17 October 2026. Undergraduates looking for athletics experience should look at athletic departments at member schools, which hire on their own calendars.
What Skills Does the NCAA Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The NCAA's program pages name skills by department. Business Performance names SQL and Tableau, Research names survey design, data analysis and data visualization, and Communications covers content for NCAA.org, social media and media relations. Governance and Member Services involves rules interpretation, waivers and reinstatement cases, and Legal Affairs covers contracts, intellectual property enforcement, data privacy and discovery. These are program pages, not job descriptions, so we have no skill-count chart.
Note: Skill-frequency chart left out: the NCAA publishes department summaries for this program, not job descriptions, so there is no posting set to count.
How Is Demand for Data Analyst Interns Moving Right Now?
Data analyst intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 37 in August
For NCAA applicants: the NCAA's national office board lists no internships today and its postgraduate window closed on 4 September 2026, so build SQL, Tableau and analysis proof before next August.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row pairs a skill the NCAA names with a remote Externship that builds the same skill.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| SQL, Tableau and business data | Business Performance: data science work naming SQL and Tableau | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy Externship |
| Survey design, analysis and visualization | Research: survey design, data analysis and data visualization | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship |
| Audience insight and storytelling | Communications: branding, creative and digital, external communications | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior Externship |
| Marketing and campaign strategy | Championships and Alliances: operations, marketing, social media and corporate relations roles | Beats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy Externship |
None of these replaces the degree, but each gives you finished work to show next August.
What Is the NCAA Application and Interview Process Like?
This is the process on the NCAA's program page for the 2027–28 class:
1. Watch for the window. It opened at 8 a.m. ET on 3 August 2026, and an information webinar ran on 18 August.
2. Apply on the NCAA Program Hub. Choose up to three departments in a single application.
3. Submit your materials. A resume is required, with official undergraduate transcripts, professional references and short-answer responses; the page calls the cover letter required in one FAQ and optional in another.
4. Interview. Each department reviews applications and runs its own interviews, and selected applicants hear from the hiring department directly.
5. Offers. Candidate notification is in November and final offers are extended in December.
Questions go to the Leadership Development team at internship@ncaa.org, according to the program page.
What Students on Reddit Say
We found no usable first-hand threads about the NCAA national office: one Reddit post relayed a role description that conflicts with the official page, and another was about a member school's athletic department.
How Do You Stand Out for an NCAA Internship?
Three moves.
First, plan around early August. The 2026 window ran about a month, so have transcripts, references and short answers ready in July.
Second, frame transferable skills. The NCAA says no athletics background or sports-specific degree is required, so data, writing and research work count. Use your three department choices on roles you can back with finished projects.
Third, plan the move. The internship is in person in Indianapolis, relocation costs are yours, and over 40 former interns now work at the national office in full-time roles. The NCAA doesn't publish an applicant count, so don't assume odds either way.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 NCAA internship?
No, and the NCAA national office has no summer internship for undergraduates that we could find. Its internship is the Postgraduate Internship Program for recent graduates, and the 2027–28 window closed on 4 September 2026. The next window is expected from early August to early September 2027.
Is there an NCAA internship for undergraduates?
Not at the national office, as far as we could find. The Postgraduate Internship Program requires a bachelor's or master's degree by the 14 June 2027 start, and the national office's job board listed no internships on 17 October 2026. Athletic departments at member schools hire their own interns separately.
When do NCAA Postgraduate Internship applications open?
For the 2027–28 class, applications opened at 8 a.m. ET on 3 August 2026 and closed at 5 p.m. ET on 4 September. The next window is expected to open in early August 2027, projected from that one documented cycle. Check the program page in July.
How much does the NCAA internship pay?
Interns are paid hourly at a rate that equates to $33,000 annualized, and they receive full benefits, according to the NCAA's program page. The hourly figure isn't published. The internship runs one year in Indianapolis, and relocation costs are the intern's responsibility.
Is the NCAA internship in person?
Yes. It's a full-time, in-person internship at the national office in Indianapolis, and relocation is required. The NCAA says interns follow the same work-location policy as full-time staff, so confirm current arrangements. The class runs 14 June 2027 to 26 May 2028.
How many NCAA internship positions are there?
The program page lists 45 positions across 12 departments for the 2027–28 class, and applicants may choose up to three departments in a single application. The NCAA's jobs page still says up to 30 positions, so use the program page figure.
Can international students apply to the NCAA internship?
Possibly. You must be legally authorized to work in the US, and the NCAA says F-1 graduates of a four-year NCAA member institution may apply through Optional Practical Training. You still need a bachelor's or master's degree from that kind of school by the start date.
Do you need to be a former athlete to get an NCAA internship?
No. The NCAA says prior athletics department experience and former student-athlete status aren't required, and no sports-specific degree is needed. There is also no age restriction. Applicants only need the qualifying degree, US work authorization and no prior NCAA national office internship or employment.
The NCAA's next window is about ten months away and closes on a hard cutoff. Use the time well: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to put in front of a department reviewer.
