Last updated: October 2026
National Life Group's summer 2027 internships are open now. On October 5, 2026 the Vermont life insurer had 18 summer 2027 intern postings live on its internship board and main careers board, from actuarial, treasury and corporate tax to digital marketing, graphic design and a Digital & AI Experience role, plus an audit co-op. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
Every posting pays $19 to $28 an hour, and the program runs 10 weeks, June 1 to August 6, 2027, at the Montpelier, Vermont headquarters or the Addison, Texas campus, in the office Monday through Thursday. Each role is "open until filled," and four were added as late as September 28 and 29. One warning: independent agencies that sell National Life policies recruit commission-based financial representatives, sometimes with "intern" titles. Those aren't this program.

What Is a National Life Group Internship?
A National Life Group internship is a paid, 10-week summer program at the home offices of National Life Group, the trade name of National Life Insurance Company, founded in Montpelier, Vermont in 1848, and Life Insurance Company of the Southwest in Addison, Texas. Interns work on real projects in actuarial, finance, audit, IT, operations, marketing and distribution, attend weekly lunch-and-learns, and finish with a group project presented to a panel of executive judges, according to its internships page. National Life sells life insurance and annuities, and its company motto is "Do good. Be good. Make good." These are home-office jobs, not the commission-based agent roles that independent agencies recruit for.

When Do National Life Group Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
National Life posted its summer 2027 wave between August 19, 2026 (actuarial) and September 29, 2026 (Digital & AI Experience and Operations), about eight to nine and a half months before the June 1, 2027 start, and the wave was still growing in late September. Last year's summer 2026 postings carried the same pay band, but we couldn't find when they first went up, so the year-over-year pattern isn't measured. There's no deadline: every posting stays open until filled. Applications for summer 2028 are expected around August to September 2027, based on this one dated cycle.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 18 internship postings across actuarial, finance, audit, IT, operations, marketing, design and distribution, plus an audit co-op, at the Vermont and Texas campuses.
Roles close one at a time as they're filled. No posting gives a closing date, so earlier applications see more open roles.
Offers depend on passing a criminal history check and other background checks where applicable. Plan your housing or commute: no posting mentions housing support, and you're on site four days a week.
The 10-week program runs June 1 to August 6, 2027, Monday to Thursday on campus, with an orientation, lunch-and-learns, mentors who are former interns, and a cross-department project presented at a company-wide event.
Applications for summer 2028 are expected, based on this year's August to September postings.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
National Life fills on a rolling basis. Every posting says it is "accepting applications for this role on an ongoing basis and the role remains open until filled," with no closing date, so a role can disappear once a candidate accepts. Most roles are a single seat in one department, and many can be filled at either campus, so an early applicant competes with fewer people for each. The wave was still growing on September 29, which makes October the window when the most roles are live at once.
Which National Life Group Internship Programs Should You Target?
National Life runs one summer program with roles across the company. Here are the 18 summer 2027 postings and the audit co-op, grouped by area.
| Area | Roles | Campus | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Actuarial | Actuarial Intern | Montpelier or Addison | SQL, Excel macros, Alteryx, Tableau; one SOA exam passed |
| Finance and audit | Treasury, Capital Management, Corporate Tax, Financial Reporting, Internal Audit; Audit Co-Op ($18 to $27, rising juniors, 3.2 GPA) | Most at either campus; Internal Audit and the co-op in Montpelier | MS Office, financial acumen, reconciliations, control testing |
| Operations and technology | Operations, Strategic Operations Analyst, Customer Experience and Transformation, Digital & AI Experience, IT Application Development (Inforce) | Montpelier or Addison | Data analysis, Excel, dashboards, AI-assisted tools, problem solving |
| Marketing and design | Digital Marketing, Market Research, Web Production, Graphic Design | Montpelier or Addison | Adobe Creative Cloud and a portfolio for design; research and writing |
| Distribution | Distribution Sales (Montpelier and Addison, posted separately), Affiliated Distribution | Sales at either; Affiliated Distribution in Montpelier | Salesforce CRM, MS Office, communication; 3.0 GPA for Affiliated Distribution |
The internships page describes the program; apply on the intern board. Distribution Sales interns support the home-office sales team; they aren't licensed agents and aren't paid on commission.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
National Life's internships page sets program-wide criteria, and each posting adds its own:
• Class year: "Incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors at accredited undergraduate institutions," per the internships page; Customer Experience and Transformation asks for rising juniors or seniors, and Digital & AI Experience for an anticipated 2028 graduation.
• GPA: the internships page says a minimum of 3.25; the Affiliated Distribution posting says 3.00, and the audit co-op 3.2. Most postings name none.
• Actuarial: an actuarial science, math or statistics major and "Passing score on at least 1 SOA actuarial exam," listed as a minimum qualification.
• Work authorization: every posting says "we do not offer visa sponsorship for this position."
• Schedule: in the office four days a week, Monday through Thursday, in Montpelier or Addison.

Is the 3.25 GPA a Hard Cutoff at National Life Group?
Not on every role. The 3.25 comes from the program's marketing page, while the postings themselves mostly name no GPA, and one, Affiliated Distribution, sets 3.0. Go by the posting you're applying to. The firmer gates are the ones written into every posting: no visa sponsorship and four office days a week, plus the passed SOA exam for actuarial. The actuarial posting also prefers juniors.
What Skills Does National Life Group Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
National Life's postings share a "how you show up" profile: written and oral communication (17 of 18), an inquisitive mindset that asks relevant questions (17), collaboration (16) and organization under competing demands. The role-specific skills then split: actuarial and operations roles ask for SQL, Excel, Alteryx, Tableau and dashboards; finance roles for MS Office and financial acumen; design for Adobe Creative Cloud and a portfolio; distribution for Salesforce. Seventeen postings also carry an AI expectations block: use approved AI tools and check AI-generated content.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each National Life skill below maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss in your interviews.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Financial analysis | Treasury: "completing daily Treasury processes" and cash management; Capital Management and Financial Reporting | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| SQL and data | Actuarial: "Perform queries in SQL or build macros in Excel to manipulate data" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Customer and market research | Market Research and Customer Experience and Transformation interns | Consumer Behavior Insights with Generous Brands |
| AI-assisted problem solving | Digital & AI Experience: "solving real business problems with AI-assisted tools" | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Digital content and design | Digital Marketing, Web Production and Graphic Design: "print and digital marketing materials" | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy |
The SQL match is the closest for actuarial applicants: it's written into the actuarial posting's duties, alongside the one SOA exam it requires.
What Is the National Life Group Application and Interview Process Like?
National Life doesn't publish its interview rounds. What its postings and careers pages do say:
1. Apply on Greenhouse. Each role is a separate posting; most list both Montpelier and Addison, so say which campus you prefer.
2. Check the gates first. No visa sponsorship, four office days a week, a passed SOA exam for actuarial, and the GPA if the posting names one.
3. Interviews. National Life doesn't describe its rounds, and we found no first-hand intern account of them. Prepare examples that match the posting's "how you show up" list: detail, organization, curiosity and clear communication.
4. Background check. All offers depend on passing a criminal history check and other background checks where applicable.
5. Start. The program begins June 1, 2027 with a formal orientation.
Our behavioral interview guide shows how to build those examples.
What the Community Says
Reddit talk about National Life is mostly about agent recruiting, not the home-office internship, so read the first two cards as a warning about look-alike offers. The third is an intern review from Indeed.
Someone worried about a relative being recruited to sell National Life policies. A former employee called National Life an old, established and conservative company and blamed outside recruiting groups; others described those groups as pyramid-style.
A part-time offer to sell National Life policies came with a $150 upfront fee to join. Commenters agreed that a real job doesn't ask you to pay to start, a useful test for any "internship" offer.
An actuarial intern at the Addison campus described flexible hours and projects that were challenging but relevant to the work.
How Do You Stand Out for a National Life Group Internship?
Three moves. First, apply in October and name a campus. Roles stay open only until filled, and most can be done in Vermont or Texas, so make your preference easy to act on. Second, show the profile the postings repeat. Most list the same "how you show up" qualities, so bring one example each of careful detail work, juggling competing deadlines and asking the question nobody else asked. Third, show AI judgment. Seventeen postings ask interns to use approved AI tools and to check AI-generated content, so a short story about catching an AI error fits well. National Life profiles interns who returned for a second summer and were later hired, but it publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 National Life Group internship?
No. Summer 2026 postings now show as no longer accepting applications, and that program has run. The open door is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 National Life had 18 intern postings live for June 1 to August 6, 2027, each open until filled. Apply this fall.
When do National Life Group internship applications close?
No posting has a closing date. Each says National Life accepts applications on an ongoing basis and the role remains open until filled, so roles close one by one. The summer 2027 postings went up between August 19 and September 29, 2026, so October is when most are live.
How much do National Life Group interns make?
Every summer 2027 internship posting lists $19 to $28 an hour, the same band as last year's actuarial posting; the audit co-op lists $18 to $27. National Life says the final rate depends on experience, education and other factors. No posting mentions housing support.
Where are National Life Group internships located?
At the Montpelier, Vermont headquarters or the Addison, Texas campus near Dallas. Most roles list both, so you can choose; Internal Audit, Affiliated Distribution and the audit co-op are Montpelier only. Interns work on site four days a week, Monday through Thursday.
What GPA do you need for a National Life Group internship?
The internships page asks for a minimum 3.25 GPA, but most postings name none, Affiliated Distribution asks for 3.0 and the audit co-op for 3.2. Go by the posting you're applying to. Actuarial applicants also need at least one SOA exam passed.
Does National Life Group sponsor visas for interns?
No. Every summer 2027 internship posting says National Life doesn't offer visa sponsorship for the position, so you'll need your own US work authorization. That applies across all tracks, including actuarial, finance, IT and marketing, at both the Vermont and Texas campuses.
Is a National Life Group financial representative internship the same thing?
No. Independent agencies that sell National Life products recruit commission-based financial representatives, sometimes with "intern" titles. The home-office internship is a paid hourly program posted on National Life's own Greenhouse boards. Be wary of any offer that asks you to pay a fee to join.
Do National Life Group interns get hired full-time?
Some do, but National Life publishes no conversion rate. Its postings say the program prepares students for full-time employment, and its internships page profiles former interns now in roles such as associate auditor and director of data governance. All three profiled interns returned for a second summer.
National Life's summer 2027 roles stay open only until filled, so apply this month. In parallel, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to discuss in your interviews.
