National Gallery of Art internships in Washington, DC pay $25.26 an hour, and neither program is open today. The Academic Year Internships page reads "Applications are now closed." The Summer Internships page still shows the finished 2026 cycle (deadline February 16, 2026, program June 1 to August 7, 2026) and no 2027 dates. Plain words: you apply in early 2027 for a summer 2027 start.
Both programs use a single hard deadline, not rolling review. Based on the last two summers (February 21, 2025 and February 16, 2026), the summer 2027 deadline is expected around mid-February 2027. That is an estimate, and the Gallery hasn't announced it. This page covers the Washington museum, not the National Gallery in London.

What Is a National Gallery of Art Internship?
A National Gallery of Art internship is a paid, full-time placement at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The Gallery says it "serves the nation by welcoming all people to explore and experience art, creativity, and our shared humanity." Interns work on defined projects with a department supervisor and a separate mentor outside their department.
The Gallery doesn't post a list of specific internships in advance. Depending on placement, interns might support research and writing, exhibition planning, learning and engagement, visitor experience, operations, digital projects, facilities and preservation, data and AI projects, or conservation and collection care. In recent years the summer program has had a cohort of approximately 10 to 15 interns, per the Gallery's FAQ.

When Do National Gallery of Art Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Each program has one annual deadline with a short lead time. The summer 2026 deadline of February 16 sat about three and a half months before the June 1 start, with decisions in late March to early April. The academic year deadline of April 6, 2026 sat about five and a half months before the September 22 start, with decisions in early to mid May.
The summer deadline moved about five days earlier in one year (February 21, 2025 to February 16, 2026), which supports a mid-February estimate for 2027 with medium confidence. The academic year has one dated cycle, so that estimate is low to medium. We couldn't find when either portal opens.
Nothing is open. The academic year page says applications are closed, and the summer page still shows the 2026 cycle with no 2027 dates.
Choose a work sample (up to 10 pages, creative work counts), line up two references and draft the four 250-word answers.

Interviews early to mid March and decisions late March to early April, based on the 2026 summer timeline. Academic year 2027–28 deadline expected around early April, with decisions early to mid May.
Summer 2027 start expected in early June for about 10 weeks (the 2026 program was 10 weeks, the 2025 program 9). Academic year 2027–28 expected to start in September.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Both programs use a hard deadline, so the argument isn't to apply on opening day; it's that the deadline is absolute and the application is heavy. You need an account on the portal, four 250-word short answers, a resume or CV, a work sample of up to 10 pages and contact details for two references.
The Gallery's pages give no late exception, and it asks applicants not to contact staff directly. Start the writing in January so the February deadline isn't the first time you read the prompts.
Which National Gallery of Art Internship Programs Should You Target?
The Gallery runs two paid programs, each with a separate application. You can apply to both.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills / notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer Internship | Conservation, digital storytelling, curatorial, archives, facilities, operations, public programs | 10 weeks, June 1 to Aug 7, 2026 (last cycle) | Writing, curiosity; $25.26/hr plus $1,818 stipend |
| Academic Year Internship | Long-term projects in curatorial, digital interpretation, archives, education | 34 weeks, Sept 22, 2026 to May 15, 2027 (this cycle) | Sustained project work; $25.26/hr plus $6,868 stipend |
| John Wilmerding Fund placement | American art or digital interpretation | Nine months | No separate application; designated from the academic-year pool |
| Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation Curatorial Internship | European art curatorial research and exhibitions | Nine months | No separate application; note your interest in your answers |
Details are on the Gallery's internship FAQs. Academic-year interns are also eligible for federal health and life insurance benefits per the program page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
From the Gallery's program pages and FAQs:
• Summer: undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, career changers and people new to the field. No specific major or background.
• Academic year: people who have completed an undergraduate degree, and current or former graduate students. The wording is year-bound, so check the 2027–28 posting.
• Experience: no arts major or prior museum experience is required.
• International applicants: F-1 students currently studying in the US are eligible for both. The Gallery may sponsor a visa for the academic year in some cases and is generally not able to for the summer.
• Location: you must be able to work on site in Washington, DC regularly. Housing isn't provided.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
No GPA is published. The Gallery says it looks for curiosity, motivation and genuine interest in museum work, and that there is no single ideal profile. The visible screen is writing: four 250-word answers and a work sample. A middling GPA won't disqualify you on paper, but a vague set of answers will.
What Skills Does the National Gallery of Art Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The Gallery doesn't post job descriptions, so there's no skills list to count. What it does say is that placements span research and writing, exhibition planning, learning and engagement, visitor experience, operations, digital projects, data and AI projects, and conservation. Past interns studied business, communications, education, computer science, engineering, sociology and natural sciences as well as art history.
The skills the process tests are writing and project fit: short answers on goals and preparation, and a written or creative work sample.
Note: No frequency chart: the Gallery posts no job descriptions in advance, so there is no sample to count.

What Is the National Gallery of Art Application and Interview Process Like?
The process comes from the Gallery's program pages and FAQs.
1. Create an account on the online portal when the cycle opens. The Gallery takes no email or postal submissions.
2. Submit the application: the form, four 250-word short answers on goals, interests and preparation, a resume or CV, and one written or creative work sample of up to 10 pages.
3. List two references. Letters are requested only from finalists.
4. Staff review, then virtual interviews with a small panel for shortlisted candidates only.
5. Decisions came late March to early April for summer 2026 and early to mid May for the academic year.
The Gallery asks applicants not to contact staff about internships, and it can't give individual feedback.
What Students on Reddit Say
One recent r/MuseumPros thread covers the timing in practice.
In March 2026, a summer applicant reported an interview invitation arriving by email the day before, sent to the personal address used on the application, and advised checking spam. Academic-year applicants were still waiting in mid to late April, and one reported getting two summer rejection emails despite applying only to the academic year.
How Do You Stand Out for a National Gallery of Art Internship?
The Gallery says it receives many strong applications and has limited placements. The only size figure published is the summer cohort of roughly 10 to 15 interns in recent years; no acceptance rate is given.
Three moves are grounded in the Gallery's own guidance. First, use the four short answers to state specific goals and interests, because placement is guided by what you say, though not guaranteed. Second, choose a work sample that shows how you think; creative work counts. Third, if you care about American art, digital interpretation or European art, say so in your answers, since the special-focus placements are designated from the general pool.
You can reapply if you aren't selected.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 National Gallery of Art internship?
No. The summer 2026 deadline was February 16, 2026, and the 2026 program ran June 1 to August 7. The academic year page says applications are closed, and no 2027 dates are posted on October 16, 2026. Expect the next summer deadline around mid-February 2027.
Are National Gallery of Art internships paid?
Yes. All interns are paid $25.26 an hour, plus a cost-of-living stipend ($1,818 for summer, $6,868 for the academic year) and a public transit subsidy. The 10-week summer totals $10,104.00 in wages. The Gallery doesn't provide housing, and academic-year interns are eligible for federal health benefits.
When is the National Gallery of Art summer internship deadline?
The 2026 deadline was February 16, 2026 at 5:00 pm EST, and the 2025 deadline was February 21, 2025. The 2027 date isn't announced. Based on those two years, we expect around mid-February 2027, but treat that as an estimate and watch the Gallery's summer internship page.
How long are National Gallery of Art internships?
The summer program was 10 weeks in 2026 (June 1 to August 7), at 40 hours a week, and 9 weeks in 2025, so length can change. The Academic Year Internship is 34 weeks, running September 22, 2026 to May 15, 2027 this cycle. Both are full time.
Who can apply for a National Gallery of Art internship?
Summer is open to undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates and career changers. The academic year is for people with a completed undergraduate degree and current or former graduate students. No specific major or museum experience is required. You can apply to both programs with separate applications.
Can international students apply to the National Gallery of Art?
Yes, in part. Students on valid F-1 visas currently studying in the US are eligible for both programs. The Gallery may sponsor a visa for the longer academic year in some cases, but it is generally not able to for the summer.
Is a National Gallery of Art internship remote?
No. Interns must be able to work on site at the Gallery in Washington, DC on a regular basis, even if a placement includes occasional remote days. Fully remote internships aren't currently available, and the Gallery doesn't provide housing, so plan where you'd live.
Does a National Gallery of Art internship lead to a job?
Not directly. The Gallery calls its programs educational experiences rather than pipelines to full-time employment and guarantees nothing. Many former interns have gone on to museum jobs at the Gallery and elsewhere, as well as graduate study, arts nonprofits and federal agencies. No conversion rate is published.
No National Gallery of Art internship is open today, and the next summer deadline is expected around mid-February 2027. A remote Externship gives your short answers and work sample a finished project to build on.
