Last updated: October 2026
Microchip Technology doesn't recruit interns in one fall wave. The Chandler, Arizona chipmaker says it hires both seasonal and long-term interns, and on 3 October 2026 its Workday board held six US intern roles, every one part time and built around a school schedule. Its summer roles come later: of the 22 summer 2026 US intern postings we could date, 18 were first listed between 6 February and 24 April 2026. In plain words: apply now to an in-semester role near you if one fits, and expect summer 2027 roles to post mostly from February to April 2027, then fill fast.
What Is a Microchip Technology Internship?
A Microchip Technology internship is a paid, onsite engineering or technician role at one of Microchip's US sites, often part time during the school year and sometimes a full summer term. Microchip makes microcontrollers, analog and mixed-signal chips, FPGAs and data-center storage and connectivity products, reported net sales of $4.713 billion for fiscal 2026, and describes itself in its postings as a 17,000-member team. Interns do real lab work: bringing up customer evaluation boards, debugging firmware, measuring power and performance, or keeping fab equipment running. Its Gresham, Oregon technician track goes further and pays community college tuition.

When Do Microchip Technology Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Microchip runs several short cohorts a year, each posted separately and close to its start. Of the 22 summer 2026 US intern postings we could date from third-party listings, the first appeared on 6 February 2026, 18 went up between February and April, and the last on 12 June. Fall 2026 roles followed in July and August, and winter-term roles in September. So the next open doors for a reader today are in-semester roles, with applications for summer 2027 expected mostly in February to April 2027. Our dates come from listing timestamps, which trail the true posting date by a little, so treat them as expected windows.
Applications are open right now for six part-time US roles: applications engineering in Roseville, Houston and Lawrence, and technician roles in Gresham (two) and Mount Holly Springs. Summer 2027 roles aren't posted yet.
More in-semester and winter or spring 2027 roles expected. In 2026, Microchip listed winter-term engineering roles in September. Check the board weekly.
Main window for summer 2027 engineering roles, expected. Apply within days: three engineering postings from August and September 2026 had closed by 3 October.
Late summer roles still appear. In 2026 a few went up in May and June. Interviews are short, often a resume-based first round and then an onsite for design roles.
Paid onsite internships at US sites such as Chandler, Colorado Springs, Austin and Roseville, at $17 to $30 an hour where pay is published.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Microchip's engineering intern roles post close to their start date and come down when filled, with no published deadline. That makes them short-window in practice. A Chandler software intern role first appeared on a public listing on 29 September 2026 and was already closed on Microchip's own board by 3 October. A Chandler verification role and a San Jose ASIC verification role from August and September had also closed. Technician roles behave differently: the Mount Holly Springs posting has been open since March. If you want a Microchip engineering internship, set a saved search on Workday and apply within days of a matching role appearing.
Which Microchip Technology Internship Programs Should You Target?
Microchip hires interns by site and team, not into one branded program. These are the shapes we see on its board now and in the 2026 cycle.
| Track | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applications Engineering Intern | Board bring-up, firmware debug, customer issue recreation, NVMe/PCIe products | Part time, in semester | Roseville CA ($22–$30/hr) and Houston TX; open now |
| Applications Engineering, mixed-signal | Power electronics, analog parts, customer requirements | Part time | Lawrence MA; $20–$28/hr; export-controlled; open now |
| Equipment Engineering Technician | Wet process and metrology tools in Fab 4 | At least 24 hrs/week around AAS classes | Gresham OR; tuition, books and most fees paid; open now |
| Electronics Technician Intern | Electronic test equipment and pass/fail testing | Part time, weekdays | Mount Holly Springs PA; $17–$22/hr; open now |
| Design and Verification Interns | SystemVerilog/UVM verification, digital and analog design | Semester or summer | Chandler AZ and San Jose CA; recent roles closed within weeks |
| Summer Engineering Interns | Software, data, reliability, product and test, process engineering | Summer | Posted Feb–Jun 2026 across AZ, CO, TX, MA, NY, AL and CA |
Search the Microchip Workday board for "Intern". Ignore the "Engineering Summer Intern 2026/2027" posting: it's in New Zealand and runs November 2026 to February 2027.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Requirements vary by posting. Across the six live US roles:
• Enrollment: you must be currently enrolled in an accredited program. Engineering roles want BS or MS students in electrical, computer or software engineering; technician roles want associate's or AAS students.
• Export control: the Lawrence and Mount Holly Springs roles require proof of US citizenship, permanent residency or protected-individual status.
• Sponsorship: the Gresham and Mount Holly Springs postings say the role isn't eligible for Microchip immigration sponsorship.
• Hours: in-semester roles are part time; the Gresham roles require at least 24 hours a week around classes.
• GPA: none of the six postings states a minimum.

Can International Students Apply?
For many Microchip intern roles, it's hard. Several live postings are export-controlled and need US citizenship, permanent residency or protected-individual status, and three say plainly that the role isn't eligible for immigration sponsorship. Others don't mention either. Read each posting's last paragraph before applying, and if you need sponsorship later, ask early whether the team can support it.

What Skills Does Microchip Technology Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Microchip's skill asks come from seven US intern postings read in full in late September 2026, and they're concrete. Lab and hardware work: setting up test equipment, bringing up evaluation boards and measuring power and performance. Scripting and programming: Python, Tcl, Perl, Java, C and C++ appear across the engineering roles. Customer-facing communication: applications interns recreate customer problems and explain the fix, so writing and communication skills show up in most engineering postings.

None of these replaces lab time, but each gives you a finished, explainable project, which is what Microchip interviewers dig into.
What Is the Microchip Technology Application and Interview Process Like?
Microchip doesn't publish its intern interview steps. Candidates describe a short process:
1. Apply on Workday. Use the Microchip Workday board and apply to roles at the sites you can reach.
2. First round. An introductory, resume-based conversation (Chandler design intern, June 2026).
3. Technical or onsite round. A two-hour onsite in Chandler for a design intern role (2026); a 30-minute and a 90-minute interview for a product engineering intern role (2024).
4. Offer. Timing isn't published; roles close as soon as they're filled.
Know every project on your resume in depth, and for design and verification roles review digital fundamentals such as CMOS basics, state machines and timing.
What Students on Reddit Say
Microchip interns and candidates post occasionally in electrical engineering subreddits.
A student with a summer analog circuit design co-op offer asked what Microchip was like. A Microchip employee replied to ask about the New College Grad program after the internship because they're hiring, and an outside engineer called its applications teams sharp and good to learn from.
A senior starting an applications engineering internship in the timing and clocking group in January, not summer, later said they'd been told they would join full time after the internship.
A master's student in electrical engineering was invited to a two-hour onsite for a design intern role in Chandler after a first round that was mostly introductory and resume-based.
How Do You Stand Out for a Microchip Internship?
Three moves. Apply where you are. Microchip hires by site and many roles are part time during the semester, so a student near Chandler, Roseville, Houston, Lawrence, Gresham or Mount Holly Springs has a real edge. Show lab hands. Applications and technician roles want people who can set up equipment, bring up a board and debug it; a hardware project you can explain step by step beats a long list of courses. Move fast. Engineering roles close within days to weeks. For Oregon community college students, the Gresham technician track is the standout: it pays, covers tuition, books and most fees, and leads to an Equipment Technician II role. Microchip doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate.
