Last updated: October 2026
MD Anderson Cancer Center runs 21 summer research programs under one application, CATALYST, and has published its summer-2027 calendar: applications open 16 November 2026 and close 13 January 2027, and the 10-week program runs 7 June to 13 August 2027 with a $7,200 stipend. In plain words: you apply during late 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and the deadline lands right after the winter break, with two recommendation letters due by the same date.
Other doors run on their own clocks. The Research Medical Library's summer internships take applications now, from 1 October to 1 December 2026. Nursing students apply separately for the PSNE-2 Summer Program in late January 2027, graduate business students for the MBA/MHA Summer Internship around February, and the Administrative Fellowship class starting July 2027 already closed on 20 August 2026.

What Is an MD Anderson Internship?
An MD Anderson internship is usually a 10-week, paid summer research placement in a faculty lab at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, run through the CATALYST umbrella of 21 programs. The largest, CPRIT CURE, takes undergraduates of any major for 40 hours a week. Separate programs cover nursing students, MBA and MHA students, library and archives students, and new health-administration graduates.
MD Anderson has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report for 12 years in a row. Its institutional profile counts 26,892 employees and 5,905 trainees in fiscal 2025, including 1,559 student program participants. Every CATALYST trainee gets a faculty mentor, a cancer-biology bootcamp and lectures, and ends the summer presenting a poster and publishing an abstract.

When Do MD Anderson Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
For the main research track, the dates are now official. MD Anderson's CATALYST page lists summer-2027 applications from 16 November 2026 to 13 January 2027, a program from 7 June to 13 August 2027, and two informational webinars (27 October at 12 p.m. CST and 19 November at 11 a.m. CST). That's a window of about eight weeks that closes about five months before the start. The calendar is stable: the 2026 window ran 17 November 2025 to 14 January 2026, and the 2025 deadline was 15 January.
Each other track runs on its own system and calendar. The library's summer internships take applications 1 October to 1 December 2026 with decisions by 30 January. The PSNE-2 Summer Program for nursing students opens in late January 2027, and the 2026 posting closed on 5 February. The MBA/MHA Summer Internship ran 2 February to 3 March in 2026, so expect a similar window for summer 2027.
CATALYST isn't open yet; applications for summer 2027 open 16 November 2026. Open right now: the library's summer internships (to 1 December) and, for Houston nursing students, the year-round PSNE program (not a summer track; postings close 5 October 2026 at 5 p.m. CST). Use October to line up your two recommenders and register for the 27 October webinar.
CATALYST applications for summer 2027 open (official date). Submit the inquiry form with your resume, official transcript and research statement, then add two recommenders in Slate.
CATALYST deadline for summer 2027, 11:59 p.m. CST, including both letters. PSNE-2 Summer opens in late January, and the MBA/MHA internship is expected to open in early February.
CATALYST pre-offers expected in late February, with a response deadline in early March (2026 cycle: pre-offers by 23 February, response by 4 March). Mentor matching follows.
CATALYST runs 7 June to 13 August 2027: lab research with a faculty mentor, a cancer-biology bootcamp, lectures and a final poster symposium. Housing isn't provided; the $7,200 stipend is meant to cover it.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
CATALYST is a hard-deadline program, not a rolling one, and the deadline catches people for a specific reason: the application isn't complete until both recommendation letters are uploaded by the referees, signed and dated on letterhead. MD Anderson's how-to-apply page also notes that Slate won't accept revised documents after you submit, and duplicate applications aren't reviewed. With 13 January falling just after the holidays, the practical deadline for asking your recommenders is early December.
Applying in the first week of the window gives your letters the whole holiday period to arrive. The same logic applies to the nursing and MBA/MHA tracks, whose windows are shorter.
Which MD Anderson Internship Programs Should You Target?
MD Anderson's student programs sit on three systems: Slate for CATALYST, MBA/MHA and the Fellowship, the jobs board for nursing and trainee roles, and email for the library.
| Program | Who it's for | Duration and pay | Summer 2027 window |
|---|---|---|---|
| CATALYST summer research (21 programs, incl. CPRIT CURE, SPCR, ITERT-STEP, UPWARDS, SIRP, IDEAS Lab) | Mostly undergraduates; some tracks for high school seniors (18+) and medical students | 10 weeks; $7,200 stipend | 16 Nov 2026 to 13 Jan 2027 |
| CPRIT CURE (largest CATALYST program) | Finished freshman to junior year, or returning fifth-year seniors; any major | 10 weeks, 40 h/week; up to $7,200 | 16 Nov 2026 to 13 Jan 2027 |
| PSNE-2 Summer Program (clinical nursing) | Full-time BSN students with 2+ clinical rotations, in Houston for the summer | 11 weeks, 36–40 h/week; hourly pay | Opens late Jan 2027 |
| MBA/MHA Summer Internship | First-year MBA/MHA students at eight named Houston-area universities | 12 weeks; $17/hour | Expected ~early Feb to early Mar 2027 |
| Research Medical Library internships | Enrolled students; some tracks need an ALA-accredited library science program | June to August, up to 16 weeks | 1 Oct to 1 Dec 2026 (open now) |
| Administrative Fellowship (post-graduate, 18 months) | New MHA, healthcare MBA or MPH graduates | July 2027 to Dec 2028 | Closed 20 Aug 2026 |
The jobs board also lists year-round "Research Intern" roles. Most are for people who finished a bachelor's or master's within the last year and exclude current students, so undergraduates should apply through CATALYST's program list instead.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Eligibility depends on the program, and CATALYST's tracks each have their own rules:
• Age and stage: CATALYST applicants must be 18 by the first day. CPRIT CURE takes students who have finished freshman, sophomore or junior year by June, plus fifth-year seniors returning in the fall.
• Majors: CPRIT CURE is open to all majors, and some faculty specifically look for physics, math and computer science backgrounds.
• Visa status: CATALYST doesn't sponsor visas, but students with a current F-1, J-1 or H-1B valid through the program may apply. The Administrative Fellowship requires US legal residency.
• Documents: resume, official transcripts (screenshots aren't accepted), a research statement of up to 5,000 characters, and two letters uploaded by the referees.
• Restricted tracks: some CATALYST programs are limited to specific schools (Notre Dame and Augustana; University of Puerto Rico), to McGovern medical students, or to nominees.
• Credit: CPRIT CURE trainees can't earn course or internship credit from their home school for the program.

Is There a GPA Cutoff?
MD Anderson doesn't publish a numeric GPA floor for CATALYST or the nursing programs; the pages ask for good academic standing. The Administrative Fellowship is the exception, with a 3.0 minimum.
That doesn't make CATALYST easy. In a February 2026 Reddit thread, a college junior described being turned down every year since high school, and another commenter was rejected from two tracks. MD Anderson doesn't publish acceptance rates, so the research statement and letters carry most of the weight you can control.
What Skills Does MD Anderson Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
MD Anderson doesn't post job descriptions for CATALYST itself, so the chart below reads the research-trainee postings on its jobs board, which describe the same lab work. Data collection and analysis appears in every one, followed by a science degree, working inside a research team and prior research experience. Half name wet-lab methods such as cell culture, staining or flow cytometry, and five ask for statistics, coding or AI tools; the Hematopathology posting trains interns to classify leukemia cells from scanned slides with AI.
The output matters as much as the bench work. Eight of the twelve postings mention presenting or publishing findings, which matches CATALYST's required end-of-summer poster and abstract.

What Is the MD Anderson Application and Interview Process Like?
For CATALYST, MD Anderson's how-to-apply page sets out the steps:
1. Inquiry form. When the window opens on 16 November, launch the CATALYST inquiry form and upload your resume, official transcript and research statement. Documents can't be revised after you submit.
2. Slate account. Create your Slate account from the confirmation email and enter two recommenders, who upload signed, dated letters on letterhead.
3. Application forms. Complete the remaining sections and rank up to two programs. There's no submit button; the application is complete once every section and both letters are in.
4. Decisions. In the 2026 cycle, pre-offers went out by 23 February with a 4 March response deadline. Mentor matching can take up to four weeks for CPRIT CURE.
5. Onboarding. Accepted trainees complete onboarding, then start on 7 June 2027.
Nursing students apply on jobs.mdanderson.org by searching for Professional Student Nurse Extern when the PSNE-2 posting appears in late January; the 2026 posting also required an instructor recommendation form.
What Students on Reddit Say
Applicants on r/REU have posted about CATALYST decisions and housing for several cycles:
Pre-offers arrive by email in late February: 24 February in 2025, around 11:30 a.m. Central for one applicant, and 26 to 27 February in 2024, when the portal status flipped to selected. Applicants whose portal stayed blank waited longer, and waitlist notices came separately.
A 2026 admit asked about housing, and past trainees answered: MD Anderson doesn't house you, many students rent apartments near the Texas Medical Center, the area is walkable but very hot in summer, and buses are frequent enough that a bus pass is worth it.
A past summer trainee said CPRIT CURE and the other programs share many social events outside the lab, so most people make friends and find roommates. The new admit had about a week to accept the offer.
How Do You Stand Out for MD Anderson's Summer Programs?
Three moves, based on what the application actually weighs.
First, make the research statement specific. CPRIT CURE asks you to name research areas or mentors you'd like to work with, so read faculty pages and name two or three real lines of work rather than writing about cancer in general.
Second, manage your letters like a deadline of their own. Ask both recommenders in early November, send them the program description, and confirm both uploads before the holidays.
Third, use both ranking slots with care. Several CATALYST programs are restricted to specific schools or nominees, so check eligibility before you rank, and pair a large program like CPRIT CURE with a smaller one that fits your background. MD Anderson doesn't publish applicant numbers or acceptance rates, so there's no admit rate to quote here.

CATALYST summer research opens 16 November 2026 and closes 13 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. CST. Library summer internships run 1 October to 1 December 2026. The PSNE-2 Summer nursing program opens in late January 2027, and the MBA/MHA internship is expected around early February to early March 2027.
How much do MD Anderson summer interns get paid?
CATALYST trainees receive a $7,200 stipend for the full 10 weeks, pro-rated at $18 an hour for shorter stays. MBA/MHA interns earn $17 an hour, about $8,000 before tax over 12 weeks. PSNE nursing students are paid hourly, but MD Anderson doesn't publish the rate.
Does MD Anderson provide housing for summer interns?
No. None of the summer programs provides housing, and MD Anderson says the CATALYST stipend is meant to cover housing, travel and living costs. Past trainees on Reddit describe renting apartments near the Texas Medical Center and using the frequent buses to get around in the summer heat.
Can international students apply to CATALYST?
Yes, with limits. CATALYST doesn't sponsor visas, but students who already hold an F-1, J-1 or H-1B visa valid through the program dates may apply. The Administrative Fellowship requires US legal residency throughout and doesn't sponsor visas, so check each program's page before applying.
What is CPRIT CURE at MD Anderson?
CPRIT CURE is MD Anderson's largest summer undergraduate research program and part of CATALYST. Trainees spend 10 weeks, 40 hours a week, in a faculty lab. It's open to students of any major who have finished freshman to junior year, plus fifth-year seniors returning in the fall.
Is the MD Anderson nurse extern program an internship?
Not exactly. The Professional Student Nurse Extern (PSNE) programs are paid clinical roles for nursing students under RN preceptors. The summer version lasts 11 weeks for BSN students with two or more clinical rotations; a separate year-round program runs one to three semesters for Houston-area students.
Does an MD Anderson internship lead to a job?
MD Anderson doesn't publish a conversion rate for its summer programs. CPRIT CURE reports that 78% of alumni have or are pursuing a STEM graduate degree and 98% stay in STEM, and the Administrative Fellowship says many past fellows remain at MD Anderson in leadership roles.
CATALYST opens 16 November 2026, which leaves about six weeks to line up recommenders and a research project to write about. A remote Externship in healthcare data or AI can give your statement a finished example of research-style work.
