What Is a Komatsu Internship?

A Komatsu internship is a paid, on-site summer internship at Komatsu America Corp, the US arm of Tokyo-based Komatsu, or at its Komatsu Mining unit. There is no single program. Each site runs its own: a corporate rotation at the Chicago headquarters, loader testing in Longview, marketing in Peoria, engineering in Franklin and supply chain at the Charleroi distribution center. Komatsu's postings describe it as a company of "more than 64,000 people worldwide" in more than 140 countries. Its 2023 internship blog described interns at Chicago, Milwaukee, Longview, Chattanooga and Peoria, a Milwaukee event for 48 interns and a capstone project for each intern. When Do Komatsu Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Komatsu's summer 2027 postings went up in two waves. The Longview, Chicago, Franklin and Peoria postings appeared between September 10 and 17, 2026, and three Charleroi supply chain postings followed on October 15. With starts in May and June 2027, the lead time runs about seven to eight months. None of the seven postings states a closing date, so there is no deadline to count down to. We have one dated cycle, so the Summer 2028 window is a projection: around September to October 2027, the same months as this year. Komatsu hasn't announced it.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Komatsu's postings are per site, and the dates show new ones arriving over five weeks, so the list isn't fixed. No posting states a deadline. Komatsu hasn't said it fills roles on a rolling basis, but with no closing date and postings that appear one by one, the safe move is to apply early rather than wait for a deadline that may not come. If you want Chicago, note that its posting asks for a May 2027 start and says it may also allow a December 2027 start. Check the board every couple of weeks until the spring, because a posting for your city may appear later than the first seven.

Postings are on komatsu.jobs. Roles titled apprentice, electrician or SkillBridge are trades or transition programs, not student internships.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The seven postings set these rules, and they differ by site:

• Class year: Chicago asks for "at least in Junior standing." The three Charleroi postings ask for "at least in Sophomore standing." Longview says "ideally at sophomore or junior level, although freshmen with relevant experience are encouraged to apply."

• GPA: Charleroi requires a minimum of 2.70. The other four postings state no GPA.

• Major: Longview wants an accredited engineering or engineering technology program. Franklin lists electrical, mechanical, computer science, software engineering, business and other relevant fields. Peoria wants marketing, business or communications. Charleroi wants business, supply chain or logistics.

• Experience: Longview prefers hands-on technical experience such as mechanic, electrical, automotive or agricultural work, and outdoor work in heat up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Work authorization: not stated on any of the seven postings.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff at Komatsu?

Only at Charleroi, where the postings say "must have a minimum GPA of 2.70+." Chicago, Peoria, Longview and Franklin state no GPA, so your experience, class year and fit matter more there. Chicago's posting adds that interns should be open to learning about heavy equipment in construction and mining, and that prior exposure to consulting through coursework or a student organization is a plus.

What Skills Does Komatsu Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Across the seven postings, the shared core is Microsoft Excel and Office, written and verbal communication, and analytical problem solving. Charleroi asks for "Lean projects and processes" and supply chain data analysis. Longview adds hands-on measurement with a FARO arm and Laser Tracker, SolidWorks or Solid Edge, and spreadsheet modeling with pivot tables. Chicago wants strong analytical skills and an interest in consulting. Komatsu's Franklin and Charleroi postings also list six "key skills": collaboration, adaptability, hunter mentality, business acumen, application of knowledge and leadership.

The Charleroi match is the most direct: the postings ask for Lean and supply chain data work, and an operational strategy project is a concrete example to bring. For the Longview and Franklin engineering roles, no open externship covers CAD or testing, so hands-on projects and coursework carry that part.

What Is the Komatsu Application and Interview Process Like?

Komatsu doesn't publish an interview process for interns. Here's what the postings show:

1. Pick your site. Each posting is a different city and function, so choose the one that fits your major and location.

2. Apply on komatsu.jobs. Use the "Apply now" button on the posting. No separate campus application is mentioned.

3. Interviews. Not published. The postings name no assessment, case or round structure.

4. Start. Chicago and Franklin postings target a May 2027 start. Longview begins in summer 2027, and Peoria runs 12 weeks.

Three moves. First, match the posting's hands-on line. Longview asks for mechanic, electrical, automotive or farm experience, and Charleroi asks for work-study, clubs or leadership roles. Put that experience first on your resume. Second, show Excel work, not just Excel. Six of the seven postings name it, and Longview specifically names pivot tables. Bring a spreadsheet model you built. Third, read the class-year rule before you apply. Chicago needs junior standing and Charleroi needs sophomore standing and a 2.70 GPA.
