Last updated: October 2026
Kinsale Insurance opened its summer 2027 internships on October 1, 2026. On October 5 its job board listed two: a 2027 Underwriting Internship and a 2027 Actuarial Internship, both in Richmond, Virginia, both paying $20 an hour. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and at Kinsale the door opened in October, about 7.8 months before the May 24, 2027 start.
Kinsale prints its whole hiring calendar in the postings: phone screens in November and December 2026, interviews in January and February 2027, offers after that. There's no closing date, but the November screens are the real cutoff to aim for. The IT and claims internships Kinsale ran last cycle hadn't posted yet on October 5.
What Is a Kinsale Insurance Internship?
A Kinsale Insurance internship is a paid, 10-week summer program at the Richmond, Virginia headquarters of Kinsale Capital Group, an insurer that writes only excess and surplus lines: the complex commercial risks standard carriers turn down. Interns work in underwriting or actuarial (with IT and claims tracks in past cycles), attend weekly Lunch & Learns with leaders, get a dedicated mentor and meet executives. Founded in 2009, Kinsale had 720 employees at the end of 2025, all at its Richmond headquarters, and reported $1.87 billion in revenue and $503.6 million in net income, according to its 2025 annual report. Because every function sits in one building, interns see underwriting, claims and actuarial work up close.

When Do Kinsale Insurance Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Kinsale's summer 2027 Underwriting and Actuarial postings went live on October 1, 2026, about 7.8 months before the May 24, 2027 start. Last cycle it announced summer 2026 applications for IT, actuarial, claims and underwriting on its LinkedIn page in mid-September 2025, so this year's wave opened about two weeks later in the calendar, and the IT and claims tracks may still be coming. The postings spell out the rest: phone screens in November and December 2026, interviews in January and February 2027. Summer 2028 applications are expected from mid-September to early October 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now for two tracks: the 2027 Underwriting Internship and the 2027 Actuarial Internship, both posted October 1. IT and claims internships weren't posted yet on October 5.
IT, Claims Examiner and Claims Law School internships are expected to post, based on last cycle's four tracks and the internships listed on Kinsale's careers page. Check the board weekly.
Phone screens run November to December 2026 and interviews January to February 2027, per Kinsale's own postings. Offers follow the interviews, and a credit check is part of selection for some roles.
The 10-week summer 2027 internship starts on site in Richmond, Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with weekly Lunch & Learns, a mentor and executive meet-and-greets.
Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open, based on the September 2025 and October 1, 2026 starts of the last two cycles.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Kinsale's postings carry no closing date, but they do carry a calendar: phone screens in November and December, interviews in January and February. That makes the November screen the date that matters. An application that arrives in October is in the pool when screening starts; one that arrives in late December may reach a recruiter after most screens are done. With only two live postings and a company of 720 people, the class is small. Apply in October, and if you want an IT or claims seat, check the board weekly so you can apply the day those tracks post.
Which Kinsale Insurance Internship Programs Should You Target?
Kinsale's careers page lists six internship types. Two were live on October 5, 2026.
| Program | Status (Oct 5, 2026) | What interns do | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Underwriting Internship | Open, posted Oct 1, 2026 | Process broker submissions, loss run requests, premium finance notices and audit endorsements; shadow several underwriting divisions | Research, attention to detail, communication; risk management coursework a plus |
| 2027 Actuarial Internship | Open, posted Oct 1, 2026 | Review loss experience, build pricing variables, project future losses, report operational metrics | Statistics, spreadsheets, databases; advanced Excel, SQL and passed exams a plus |
| Information Technology Internship | Expected Oct to Nov 2026 | Ran in the summer 2026 cycle | Not yet posted |
| Claims Examiner Internship | Expected Oct to Nov 2026 | Claims ran in the summer 2026 cycle | Not yet posted |
| Claims Law School Internship | Expected, for J.D. students | Listed on the careers page | Not yet posted |
| Underwriting Tech Internship | Timing unknown | Listed on the careers page | Not yet posted |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Both live postings set the same core requirements:
• Class year: rising juniors or seniors pursuing a bachelor's degree.
• Majors: finance, economics, business administration or related for underwriting; mathematics, statistics, finance, economics, computer science or another quantitative field for actuarial.
• GPA: neither posting nor the careers page states a minimum.
• Work authorization: neither posting states a sponsorship policy, so ask the recruiter if you'll need sponsorship.
• Location: on site in Richmond, Virginia, Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Background check: Kinsale runs a credit check during selection for roles that require trustworthiness or access to sensitive information.

Is There a GPA Cutoff at Kinsale?
Not one Kinsale publishes. Neither 2027 posting names a GPA, so the screen rests on class year, major and the named pluses: risk management and insurance coursework for underwriting, and advanced Excel, SQL and passed actuarial exams for actuarial. If you've passed an exam, put it at the top of your resume. The careers page still says applicants should expect to graduate in 2026 or later, but the live postings ask for rising juniors and seniors, and the postings govern.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each Kinsale skill maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to talk about in the phone screen.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Research and risk analysis | Underwriting: strong problem-solving and research abilities; risk management coursework a plus | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Excel modeling | Actuarial: advanced Excel skills; developing pricing variables | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| SQL and relational databases | Actuarial: familiarity with SQL and relational databases | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Loss and trend data analysis | Actuarial: reviewing loss experience; evaluating economic and statistical trends | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
For actuarial applicants the SQL match is the most direct: it's one of three named pluses, and a finished database project is easy to show in a short phone screen.
What Is the Kinsale Insurance Application and Interview Process Like?
Kinsale publishes its hiring timeline in each posting:
1. Apply on the UKG board. Apply to each track separately; October is the safe window.
2. Phone screen, November to December 2026. Kinsale doesn't publish the format; expect questions on why insurance, why excess and surplus lines, and your coursework.
3. Interviews, January to February 2027. The format isn't published. Actuarial candidates should be ready to talk about Excel, SQL and any exams passed.
4. Offer and credit check. Offers follow the interviews, and Kinsale runs a credit check for roles that require trustworthiness or access to sensitive information.
5. Start on May 24, 2027. Ten weeks on site in Richmond, Monday to Thursday.

What Students on Reddit Say
No Reddit thread we found discusses the Kinsale internship itself; these two comments are about how Kinsale hires entry-level people.
A Northern Virginia graduate who moved to Richmond for work said the city has a cluster of excess and surplus carriers that often hire for analyst roles, and named Kinsale first.
Answering a service agent who wanted to move into underwriting, a commenter said carriers like James River, and possibly Kinsale, often hire people without underwriting experience.
How Do You Stand Out for a Kinsale Internship?
Three moves. First, apply in October. Phone screens start in November, and with two postings and a 720-person company, the class is small. Second, show you understand excess and surplus lines. Kinsale writes only the complex commercial risks standard carriers decline, with underwriting, claims and actuarial all in-house. One clear sentence on why that market interests you sets you apart in a phone screen. Third, hit the named pluses. For underwriting that's risk management and insurance coursework; for actuarial it's advanced Excel, SQL and passed exams. Kinsale doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate, though its careers page says it prioritizes promoting from within and lists entry-level roles such as Associate Underwriter.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Kinsale internship?
No. Kinsale's summer 2026 internship has ended. The open door is summer 2027: its Underwriting and Actuarial internships went live on October 1, 2026, with no closing date, and phone screens start in November 2026. Apply in October, and watch the board for the IT and claims tracks.
When do Kinsale summer 2027 applications close?
Kinsale doesn't publish a closing date. Its postings do publish a calendar: phone screens in November and December 2026, then interviews in January and February 2027. Treat early November as your target, because applications that arrive after most screens are done are at a disadvantage in a small class.
How much do Kinsale interns make?
Both summer 2027 postings state $20 an hour. Interns work Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for 10 weeks, so at that schedule the summer comes to roughly $6,000 before tax by our estimate. Kinsale doesn't mention housing or relocation support in the postings.
Who can apply for a Kinsale internship?
Rising juniors and seniors in a bachelor's program. Underwriting wants finance, economics, business administration or a related major; actuarial wants mathematics, statistics, finance, economics, computer science or another quantitative field. Neither posting states a GPA minimum or a sponsorship policy, so international students should ask the recruiter.
Is the Kinsale internship remote?
No. Kinsale works from a single office in Richmond, Virginia, and says it values face-to-face collaboration. Interns are on site Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for 10 weeks starting May 24, 2027. All 720 of its employees worked at the Richmond headquarters at the end of 2025.
Does Kinsale offer IT or claims internships?
It did last cycle, and its careers page lists IT, Claims Examiner, Claims Law School and Underwriting Tech internships. On October 5, 2026, only Underwriting and Actuarial were posted for summer 2027. Expect IT and claims to post in October or November 2026, and check the board weekly.
What skills does Kinsale look for in interns?
Both postings ask for communication, analytical problem-solving and the ability to work independently and in a team. Underwriting adds research and attention to detail, with risk management coursework as a plus. Actuarial adds statistics and spreadsheets, with advanced Excel, SQL and passed actuarial exams as pluses.
What does excess and surplus insurance mean?
Excess and surplus lines cover risks that standard insurers won't write, such as unusual or hard-to-place commercial businesses. Kinsale writes only this kind of insurance, which means its underwriters price each risk with more freedom. For an intern, it's a chance to see specialty underwriting, claims and actuarial work in one building.
Kinsale's phone screens start in November, so apply to the Underwriting or Actuarial internship this month. Build a project in parallel: a remote Externship gives you finished work to talk about when Kinsale calls.
