KBR posts most of its summer internships late, but a few are open right now. On 3 October 2026 its Workday board carried three student internship requisitions: the Defense & Intel Internship Program, one requisition covering 11 US sites at a published $18 to $35 an hour, and two software and systems roles at the USGS EROS Center in Sioux Falls. Last cycle, 27 role-specific summer reqs appeared between 30 January and 20 May 2026, peaking in March. In plain words: you apply during the 2026–27 school year, you intern in summer 2027.

One change matters for anyone targeting defense, intelligence or space work. KBR plans to spin off its Mission Technology Solutions business, where every live US student internship sits, as a separate public company named Trinzic, with completion expected on 4 January 2027.

What Is a KBR Internship?

A KBR internship is a paid summer role at a Houston-based science, technology and engineering company, usually inside a government program: defense and intelligence engineering, space and Earth-observation systems, or test support at military and NASA sites. KBR reported fiscal-2025 revenue of $7.786 billion, $5.581 billion of it from Mission Technology Solutions, the government, defense, intelligence and space business where the student internships sit.

KBR's intern page says it treats interns "like regular, full-time employees." The Defense & Intel program req lists work in engineering, software, cybersecurity, intelligence, operations, logistics and program management, and asks interns to "present project outcomes and recommendations to stakeholders" at the end of the internship. After 4 January 2027, if the spin-off completes as planned, those programs belong to Trinzic, while KBR keeps its Sustainable Technology Solutions business.

When Do KBR Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

KBR is a late-window employer for most of its interns. In the summer-2026 cycle, a public internship tracker first listed 27 KBR summer reqs between 30 January and 20 May 2026: one in January, seven in February, twelve in March, six in April and one in May. That's a lead time of roughly 1 to 5 months before a late-May or June start, with March as the median.

The program-level req is the exception. The Defense & Intel Internship Program went up on 3 September 2026, about 9 months ahead of summer, and the two EROS reqs followed on 16 September. The tracker's dates are first-listed times, so they're an upper bound on when KBR actually posted each role.

Applications are open right now for three reqs that can serve summer 2027: the Defense & Intel Internship Program (11 US sites) and two EROS Center roles in Sioux Falls. Apply now if one fits, because most of KBR's summer roles aren't posted yet and these close when filled.

4 January 2027EXPECTED

KBR's Mission Technology Solutions business is expected to become Trinzic. Defense, intelligence and space reqs posted after this date may carry the Trinzic name; as of October 2026 Trinzic's careers link still points to careers.kbr.com.

Late January – May 2027EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Role-specific summer-2027 intern reqs expected, peaking around March if KBR repeats last cycle. Each closes when filled, so check the board weekly and apply within days of a req appearing.

Summer 2027

Full-time summer internships, start dates set per req. Some programs offer part-time work during the following academic year.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

KBR's reqs are rolling: none of the three live ones has an end date, and none states a closing date in the body. That doesn't mean you have months.

A Data Science Intern req that a tracker first listed around 11 September 2026 had already closed by 28 September, under three weeks later. KBR fills roles as it finds people, and the spring wave is spread across many small, site-specific reqs rather than one big program, so each one can disappear quickly.

The practical rule: set a Workday alert, check the board weekly from late January, and apply within days of a matching req appearing.

Which KBR Internship Programs Should You Target?

KBR's student internships come in two shapes: one multi-site program req, and many role-specific reqs tied to a government customer and site.

Search "intern" on KBR's Workday board, where all three live reqs appear; KBR's Early Career & Internships page carries the FAQ. "SkillBridge Internship" reqs are for transitioning service members, not students.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility below comes from the three live reqs, read on 3 October 2026:

• Enrollment: "Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program." The program req takes rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, master's and PhD students; the EROS software role is for juniors, seniors and graduate students.

• Fields: engineering, computer science, software, cybersecurity, data science, IT, math, physics, business administration, supply chain and program management on the program req.

• Clearance: "Some internship opportunities may require the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance"; an active TS/SCI is preferred, not required, on the program req.

• Residency (EROS roles): three years of continuous US residency for a government security credential, plus a background investigation for facility access.

• GPA: none published; the program req lists "strong academic performance" as preferred.

Do You Need a Security Clearance or US Citizenship?

Not to apply to the program req. It says some placements may require clearance eligibility and lists an existing TS/SCI as a plus, and none of the three live intern reqs states a citizenship rule in words.

Clearance eligibility is where the practical limits sit. US security clearances are generally granted to US citizens, so if you aren't one, ask the recruiter which placements need clearance before you invest in an application. For the EROS roles the bar is residency: three continuous years in the US.

What Skills Does KBR Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Three intern reqs are too few for a chart on their own, so we added the 10 live junior and entry-level engineering reqs at the same programs and sites: the teams interns join. Python leads clearly, in 10 of 13, from the EROS image-processing intern role to junior reverse engineering and orbit analysis. C or C++ appears in 6.

Clearance shows up in 9 of 13, as an ability to obtain one on most junior roles and an active TS/SCI with polygraph on a few. Modeling and simulation and signal, RF or image processing appear in 5 each, which matches last cycle's intern titles in electronic warfare and software-defined radio.

What Is the KBR Application and Interview Process Like?

KBR's own FAQ and community reports describe a fairly standard process:

1. Apply on Workday. Search "intern" on KBR's Workday board rather than relying on the careers-site intern list, which missed the program req.

2. Recruiter contact. "If your application is determined to be a fit for the role, a recruiter will be in touch with you to discuss next steps," per KBR's intern FAQ.

3. Behavioral interviews. KBR advises preparing STAR-method answers for phone and in-person or virtual interviews. A 2023 applicant for a NASA-site role described choosing from a list of projects and an expected second round.

4. Offer and site clearance. Government-site roles add background checks; the EROS reqs require a national agency check for facility access.

5. Status updates. Applicants on Reddit report that rejections often show only as a status change in Workday, not by email, so check your candidate account.

Networking matters at contractor sites: commenters who landed contractor roles credit contacts made through earlier internships or program managers.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit talks about KBR mostly as an employer and a NASA contractor rather than about the intern program itself.

Commenters call KBR a solid name for a resume and say coworkers often won't distinguish an intern from a new hire; one adds that Houston's job market gives you options if the internship doesn't convert (2024 thread).

An applicant says KBR rarely replies and rejections only appear in Workday. A commenter who interned at NASA says contractors didn't respond until they worked directly with a former program manager, and others add that networking, conferences and job fairs are the way in.

A student interviewing with KBR for a Johnson Space Center role describes picking from a list of projects. A reply explains that contractor interns follow their company's rules and report to a contractor mentor, but can still join NASA's intern resource group at their center.

How Do You Stand Out at a Government-Services Contractor?

Three moves.

First, choose a customer, not just a company. The work at KBR is shaped by the program it supports: Landsat at USGS EROS, Air Force research near Wright-Patterson, NASA centers, Navy test at Patuxent River. A cover note that names the mission you want stands out from generic applications.

Second, bring Python plus one systems skill. Python appears in 10 of the 13 reqs we read; pair it with C/C++, Linux, signal processing or simulation from a class or club project.

Third, sort out clearance questions early and be ready to talk about the spin-off. Knowing that the defense, intelligence and space business is expected to become Trinzic in January 2027 shows you follow the company.

KBR doesn't publish a conversion rate; the program req says only that successful interns "may be considered" for future internships or full-time roles.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 KBR internship?

No. Summer 2026 roles are no longer posted. What's open now are three reqs that can serve summer 2027: the Defense & Intel Internship Program across 11 US sites and two USGS EROS Center roles in Sioux Falls. Most role-specific summer-2027 reqs are expected between late January and May 2027.

When do KBR summer 2027 internship applications open?

A few are open now: the Defense & Intel Internship Program since 3 September 2026 and two EROS reqs since 16 September. Most role-specific summer reqs are expected between late January and May 2027; last cycle, a public tracker first listed 27 of them between 30 January and 20 May 2026.

Is there a deadline for KBR internships?

No live KBR intern req publishes one. Reqs close when they're filled, and some close fast: a Data Science Intern req first listed around 11 September 2026 had closed by 28 September. Set a Workday alert and apply within days of a matching req appearing, especially during the spring wave.

How much do KBR interns make?

The Defense & Intel Internship Program req publishes $18 to $35 an hour, with the rate based on location, degree type, area of study and year in school. The two EROS Center reqs in Sioux Falls don't publish pay, and KBR doesn't say which benefits interns receive.

Do I need a security clearance for a KBR internship?

Not always. The program req says some placements may require the ability to obtain and maintain a US government clearance, and an active TS/SCI is preferred rather than required. The EROS roles need three years of continuous US residency for a government credential. Ask the recruiter which placements need clearance.

Where are KBR internships located?

The program req lists 11 US sites: Chantilly VA, Beavercreek and Fairborn OH, Columbia MD, Ann Arbor MI, El Segundo CA, Kihei HI, King of Prussia PA, Colorado Springs CO, Huntsville AL and Midwest City OK. The EROS roles are on site in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

What is Trinzic, and does it affect my KBR internship?

Trinzic is the planned name of KBR's Mission Technology Solutions business after a spin-off expected on 4 January 2027. Every live US student internship sits in that business, so summer-2027 defense, intelligence and space interns will probably work for Trinzic. KBR keeps its Sustainable Technology Solutions business.

Does KBR hire interns full time?

It can. The program req says successful interns "may be considered for future internship opportunities or full-time employment upon graduation," but KBR doesn't publish a conversion rate. An Indeed intern review from King of Prussia describes KBR as good with return offers, which is one data point rather than a rate.

KBR's three open reqs fill as they go, and the spring wave lands from late January. A remote Externship finished this fall gives you a Python, data or security project to put in front of a KBR recruiter.
