Amentum is the second-largest pure government services contractor in the United States, with $14.4 billion in FY2025 revenue, a $47.1 billion backlog and 53,000+ employees in more than 70 countries, and it debuted at No. 313 on the 2026 Fortune 500 just two years after listing on the NYSE. Its "Amenternship" program welcomed 130+ interns in 2021 and 140+ in 2022, placing them on NASA's Artemis program, Department of Energy nuclear cleanup sites and Navy submarine program offices.
And here's what most applicants miss: Amentum's Summer 2027 engineering intern postings went live in August 2026, ten months before the start date. You apply in fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

What Is an Amentum Internship?
An Amentum internship is a paid, 11 to 12 week summer placement inside one of the largest federal contracting operations in the country. Corporate interns at Chantilly headquarters work in engineering, IT, finance, marketing, legal and supply chain. Contract-site interns support NASA human spaceflight at Johnson Space Center and Kennedy Space Center, Department of Energy cleanup at Oak Ridge and Hanford, Navy submarine acquisition in Washington and Philadelphia, and liquid waste operations at Savannah River. Every intern gets an assigned mentor, workshops and community outreach, and every intern gives a final presentation. Eight interns a year also win a $2,000 scholarship through a separate application.
And unlike most private-sector programs, many Amentum roles require US citizenship and sponsor a security clearance after the offer, which changes both who can apply and how long the process takes.

When Do Amentum Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Amentum doesn't publish a recruiting calendar. It posts intern roles as contracts and budgets allow, and the NASA-contract engineering roles come first, roughly ten months ahead of summer. Corporate headquarters roles and the DOE site programs follow through the winter.
So here's how the summer 2027 cycle looks from September 2026, built from the live postings and Amentum's own program history.
Summer 2027 Intern postings for structural dynamics engineering at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston are already live on Workday, plus a Network O&S internship in Colorado Springs at $20.67/hr. Rolling review means the earliest applicants get read first. Apply now if you're a mechanical, civil or aerospace major with 45+ credit hours.
Expected posting window for corporate internships at Chantilly headquarters (engineering, IT, finance, marketing, legal, supply chain) and the DOE contract programs at Oak Ridge (UCOR) and Hanford (CPCCo), both listed as "coming soon" on the early-careers page. UCOR applications go through an ADP portal and CPCCo through Hanford's own job board, not the main site.
Interview phase. Application review takes about a month, then a recruiter screen covering background, availability and clearance eligibility, then a panel interview of up to 90 minutes using STAR questions. Glassdoor puts summer intern hiring at 19 days on average once interviews start.
Offer acceptance, background investigation, drug screening and clearance processing. An interim Secret clearance can take weeks; TS/SCI with polygraph takes considerably longer. Use this time to read up on Artemis milestones or the DOE cleanup scope for your site.
The internship itself: 11 to 12 weeks full-time with a mentor, professional development workshops, social events, community outreach and a required final presentation. Eight interns are selected for the optional $2,000 scholarship.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Amentum's postings carry no close date, and that cuts both ways. Nothing forces a decision by a certain Friday, but positions close the moment a hiring manager fills them, and government contractor hiring is tied to contract funding, so a role that's open today can be paused tomorrow.
So the week a posting appears is the week to apply. Intern Insider's advice on Amentum says the same thing: recruiters review applications before the volume becomes unmanageable, and early applicants get the attention that late ones don't. For the NASA engineering roles, that week was August 2026, which makes September a good second-best.
Which Amentum Internship Programs Should You Target?
Amentum runs one corporate program and five contract-site programs, and the site programs are managed semi-independently by the joint ventures that hold each contract.
| Track | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corporate Internship (Chantilly VA) | Engineering, CS, IT, finance, marketing, legal, supply chain; disciplines change yearly | 11 to 12 weeks | Project management, technical communication, business analysis |
| NASA / Space Engineering | Structural dynamics, launch and ground systems, spacecraft integration at JSC and KSC | Up to 12 weeks | Structural analysis, FEA, MATLAB, engineering design |
| UCOR (Oak Ridge TN) | DOE environmental cleanup: engineering, environmental science, health physics, project management | 11 weeks | Nuclear engineering, environmental compliance, radiation safety |
| CPCCo (Hanford WA) | Nuclear waste cleanup, environmental remediation, safety, plant engineering | 11 weeks | Waste management, environmental engineering, safety protocols |
| Team Submarine (DC / Philadelphia) | Navy submarine acquisition: engineering, financial management, logistics | 12 weeks | Defense acquisition, program finance, logistics |
| Savannah River (Aiken SC) | Liquid waste management operations | ~11 weeks | Nuclear operations, waste processing, DOE compliance |
The corporate and NASA roles post through Amentum's intern search filter; UCOR and CPCCo roles appear on their own portals, linked from the early-careers page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Amentum's requirements are lighter on GPA than most Fortune 500 programs and much heavier on citizenship and clearance eligibility.
• Enrollment: Currently enrolled at an accredited university; engineering postings require at least 45 completed credit hours
• GPA: "No GPA requirement for most positions" per the Early Careers page, but individual postings set their own floor (2.8 minimum on the Summer 2027 Structural Dynamics Engineer role)
• Major: Mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering for NASA roles; CS, IT, accounting and finance, biology and chemistry, marketing, legal and supply chain for corporate tracks
• Citizenship: Only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance, and most positions at government facilities require one; Amentum sponsors the clearance after an offer
• Drug policy: All applicants are subject to drug testing under Executive Order 12564, and marijuana use within the past 12 months is disqualifying
• Background: A background investigation covers honesty, reliability and loyalty; intelligence community roles may add a polygraph

Do You Need a Clearance Before You Apply?
No. You only need to be clearance-eligible, meaning a US citizen with no disqualifying history. Amentum sponsors the investigation after the offer, and the SF-86 form will ask for every address, employer and foreign contact from the past ten years.
So can international students apply at all? Only to non-cleared corporate roles, and Amentum's site doesn't say whether it sponsors work visas for those. Contact recruiting directly before investing time in an application.
What Skills Does Amentum Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
We read two Amentum sources in full: the Summer 2027 Structural Dynamics Engineer intern posting on Workday and the Early Careers program page, then cross-checked against Dataford's summary of 158 Amentum interview reports. Which topics dominate? Project management and Federal Acquisition Regulation knowledge appear in every interview report category, technical communication in nine out of ten, and STAR behavioral answers in roughly eight out of ten.
And the engineering posting is specific: mechanical, civil or aerospace, 45 credit hours, a 2.8 GPA and structural analysis at a NASA center. That's a job description written by the team, not by HR.

What Is the Amentum Application and Interview Process Like?
Amentum's process is longer than most because of the clearance step, but the interviews themselves are rated easy to medium: 77% of Glassdoor respondents report a positive experience, and 69% of reported interviews ended in an offer.
1. Find your track on the Early Careers page and note where it applies: Workday for corporate and NASA roles, ADP for UCOR, the Hanford job board for CPCCo.
2. Search "Intern" or "Summer 2027" using the intern filter, create a Workday profile, and complete every field including work authorization and clearance status.
3. Upload a tailored resume naming MATLAB, CAD, SQL or Python as relevant, and state US citizenship plainly if you have it. Apply separately to each track you qualify for.
4. Wait about a month for application review, then a recruiter screen on background, availability and clearance eligibility.
5. Panel interview of up to 90 minutes testing technical depth and STAR behavioral answers. Prepare six to eight stories with safety, mission and measurable results.
6. Final evaluation and offer. Dataford reports offers are sometimes extended the same day as the final interview.
7. Post-offer screening: background investigation, drug test and clearance processing, which can add weeks to months depending on the level required.
But budget for the clearance clock. A returning intern on r/SecurityClearance advised planning for four to seven months from application to hire for cleared roles, which is why the August postings for summer 2027 aren't as early as they look. Amentum's clearance FAQ covers what the investigation includes.
What Students on Reddit Say
And on Reddit, Amentum shows up mostly in NASA and clearance threads, where the recurring theme is that a contractor badge at a NASA center buys the same experience as a civil-servant one.
Weighing a NASA contractor offer, one commenter said Amentum interns at NASA do essentially the same work as NASA's own interns, with extra facility tours on top, and doubted the poster would regret accepting.
Asked how to become a NASA engineer, a commenter pointed to Amentum as a known route, describing it as an internship at NASA funded through a contractor rather than the agency itself.
A returning Amentum intern in a clearance thread told job-seekers to plan on four to seven months from application to hire for cleared positions, and noted Amentum is the prime contractor on several programs.
How Do You Stand Out at Amentum?
First, name the mission. Amentum isn't a household name, and most applicants treat it as a generic contractor. Citing the Artemis ground systems work at Kennedy, the $4 billion Space Force range contract or the $8.3 billion Oak Ridge cleanup shows you know what the company does. Mentioning its two segments, Digital Services and Global Engineering, and the 2024 merger with Jacobs' Critical Mission Solutions unit shows you read past the careers page.
Second, get clearance-ready before you apply. Clean up your credit, resolve any delinquent debts, stop any marijuana use at least 12 months out, and compile ten years of addresses, employers and foreign contacts for the SF-86. Saying "I'm clearance-ready" in an interview lowers the recruiter's risk.
Third, look where others don't. Why do the DOE site programs matter? The UCOR and CPCCo internships at Oak Ridge and Hanford involve real nuclear cleanup on multi-billion-dollar contracts, but they post on separate portals in less glamorous cities, so they draw fewer applicants than the NASA and Team Submarine roles. Nuclear, environmental, chemical and health physics students should watch those portals directly.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
And Amentum competes for the same clearance-eligible engineers and analysts as the rest of the government services and defense sector, most of which post summer roles between September and January.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Amentum internship?
No. The summer 2026 program ran from late May through August 2026 and has ended. Amentum is now hiring for summer 2027, and the first postings, structural dynamics engineering roles at NASA Johnson Space Center, have been live since August 2026. Corporate and DOE-site roles are expected to follow through the winter.
Does Amentum require a minimum GPA for internships?
Not for most positions. The Early Careers page states there's no GPA requirement for most roles, but individual postings can set one. The Summer 2027 Structural Dynamics Engineer posting requires a 2.8 minimum and 45 completed credit hours, so read each requisition rather than assuming the blanket policy applies.
Do I need US citizenship to intern at Amentum?
For most roles, yes. Amentum's clearance FAQ states only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance, and the majority of its work is on classified or controlled government programs. Some non-cleared corporate roles at headquarters may accept other work-authorized candidates, but engineering roles at government facilities generally require citizenship.
How much do Amentum interns get paid?
Posted engineering intern ranges run $20 to $28 an hour, and the live Network O&S internship in Colorado Springs lists $20.67. Indeed reports an average of $25.46 an hour across Amentum intern roles. One Levels.fyi software intern report at $22 an hour included housing and transportation, but that isn't standard across tracks.
How long is the Amentum internship?
Eleven to twelve weeks, full-time, typically late May or early June through August. The Summer 2027 posting says "not to exceed 12 weeks," Team Submarine runs 12 weeks, and UCOR and corporate programs run about 11. A few part-time roles allow up to 20 hours a week during the school year.
What is the interview process like for Amentum interns?
About a month of application review, then a recruiter screen for background and clearance eligibility, then a panel interview of up to 90 minutes using STAR behavioral questions. Glassdoor rates intern difficulty 2 to 3 out of 5, and 77 percent of candidates describe the experience as positive.
What projects do Amentum interns work on?
It depends on the site. NASA interns support Artemis and spacecraft structural analysis, DOE interns work on nuclear waste cleanup at Oak Ridge and Hanford, Team Submarine interns support Navy acquisition programs, and corporate interns handle business development, marketing, procurement and advanced technology work at headquarters. Every intern presents at the end.
Does Amentum offer return internships or full-time conversion?
Yes, though no rate is published. Amentum's 2022 program post welcomed interns returning from the prior summer, and a self-described returning intern posted on r/SecurityClearance. Conversion can be slowed by clearance processing, which that intern estimated at four to seven months from application to hire for cleared roles.
Amentum's NASA engineering postings are open and the corporate ones are a month or two out. What separates the applicant who gets the panel interview from the one who doesn't?
So build the evidence now: a short remote Externship gives you a cyber, operations or data project with a real deliverable, which is exactly the kind of STAR story Amentum's 90-minute panels are designed to pull out of you. Explore all Externships.
