What Is an Amentum Internship?

An Amentum internship is a paid, 11 to 12 week summer placement inside one of the largest federal contracting operations in the country. Corporate interns at Chantilly headquarters work in engineering, IT, finance, marketing, legal and supply chain. Contract-site interns support NASA human spaceflight at Johnson Space Center and Kennedy Space Center, Department of Energy cleanup at Oak Ridge and Hanford, Navy submarine acquisition in Washington and Philadelphia, and liquid waste operations at Savannah River. Every intern gets an assigned mentor, workshops and community outreach, and every intern gives a final presentation. Eight interns a year also win a $2,000 scholarship through a separate application.

And unlike most private-sector programs, many Amentum roles require US citizenship and sponsor a security clearance after the offer, which changes both who can apply and how long the process takes.

When Do Amentum Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Amentum doesn't publish a recruiting calendar. It posts intern roles as contracts and budgets allow, and the NASA-contract engineering roles come first, roughly ten months ahead of summer. Corporate headquarters roles and the DOE site programs follow through the winter.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Amentum's requirements are lighter on GPA than most Fortune 500 programs and much heavier on citizenship and clearance eligibility.

• Enrollment: Currently enrolled at an accredited university; engineering postings require at least 45 completed credit hours

• GPA: "No GPA requirement for most positions" per the Early Careers page, but individual postings set their own floor (2.8 minimum on the Summer 2027 Structural Dynamics Engineer role)

• Major: Mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering for NASA roles; CS, IT, accounting and finance, biology and chemistry, marketing, legal and supply chain for corporate tracks

• Citizenship: Only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance, and most positions at government facilities require one; Amentum sponsors the clearance after an offer

• Drug policy: All applicants are subject to drug testing under Executive Order 12564, and marijuana use within the past 12 months is disqualifying

Do You Need a Clearance Before You Apply?

No. You only need to be clearance-eligible, meaning a US citizen with no disqualifying history. Amentum sponsors the investigation after the offer, and the SF-86 form will ask for every address, employer and foreign contact from the past ten years.

So can international students apply at all? Only to non-cleared corporate roles, and Amentum's site doesn't say whether it sponsors work visas for those. Contact recruiting directly before investing time in an application.

Amentum's process is longer than most because of the clearance step, but the interviews themselves are rated easy to medium: 77% of Glassdoor respondents report a positive experience, and 69% of reported interviews ended in an offer.

1. Find your track on the Early Careers page and note where it applies: Workday for corporate and NASA roles, ADP for UCOR, the Hanford job board for CPCCo.

2. Search "Intern" or "Summer 2027" using the intern filter, create a Workday profile, and complete every field including work authorization and clearance status.

3. Upload a tailored resume naming MATLAB, CAD, SQL or Python as relevant, and state US citizenship plainly if you have it. Apply separately to each track you qualify for.

4. Wait about a month for application review, then a recruiter screen on background, availability and clearance eligibility.

5. Panel interview of up to 90 minutes testing technical depth and STAR behavioral answers. Prepare six to eight stories with safety, mission and measurable results.

6. Final evaluation and offer. Dataford reports offers are sometimes extended the same day as the final interview.

7. Post-offer screening: background investigation, drug test and clearance processing, which can add weeks to months depending on the level required.

But budget for the clearance clock. A returning intern on r/SecurityClearance advised planning for four to seven months from application to hire for cleared roles, which is why the August postings for summer 2027 aren't as early as they look. How Do You Stand Out at Amentum?

First, name the mission. Amentum isn't a household name, and most applicants treat it as a generic contractor. Citing the Artemis ground systems work at Kennedy, the $4 billion Space Force range contract or the $8.3 billion Oak Ridge cleanup shows you know what the company does. Mentioning its two segments, Digital Services and Global Engineering, and the 2024 merger with Jacobs' Critical Mission Solutions unit shows you read past the careers page.

Second, get clearance-ready before you apply. Clean up your credit, resolve any delinquent debts, stop any marijuana use at least 12 months out, and compile ten years of addresses, employers and foreign contacts for the SF-86. Saying "I'm clearance-ready" in an interview lowers the recruiter's risk.

Third, look where others don't. Why do the DOE site programs matter? The UCOR and CPCCo internships at Oak Ridge and Hanford involve real nuclear cleanup on multi-billion-dollar contracts, but they post on separate portals in less glamorous cities, so they draw fewer applicants than the NASA and Team Submarine roles. Nuclear, environmental, chemical and health physics students should watch those portals directly.
