Gensler recruits interns on a different calendar from most employers. Its summer 2026 office internships opened in the first week of January 2026, most postings said they'd close in late February or early March, and the program ran from 2 June to 7 August. On 3 October 2026, Gensler's own careers board listed 469 open jobs and not one internship in the US.

In plain words: you build your portfolio this fall, you apply in January 2027, and you intern in summer 2027. Gensler was Architectural Record's No. 1 architecture firm in 2025, is 100% employee-owned, with $1.87 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue and 6,000+ people in 58 offices. Its internships page says it has hosted more than 3,500 internships, with each year's class drawn from more than 60 schools.

Gensler hires on portfolio, and its window doesn't open until January, which leaves this fall for building work worth showing. Externships are short, remote programs where you complete a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship fits Gensler's brand and PR internships, and the Consumer Behavior Insights Externship with Generous Brands fits its Research Institute roles. What Is a Gensler Internship?

A Gensler internship is a paid, full-time 10-week summer placement in one of Gensler's offices, where students join a design studio as "a fully collaborative member of a design team." Interns take part in design charrettes, produce graphic presentations, 3D renderings and technical drawings, build study models, and attend lunch-and-learns, lectures and project tours. Most internships are in architecture and interior design, with others in design technology, brand design, PR, strategy, accounting and sustainability, plus research roles in the Gensler Research Institute. A second program, the Summer Fellowship, is a research intensive on the future of cities for upper-level and graduate students. Gensler says it doesn't offer building engineering services, so it doesn't typically hire civil, mechanical, electrical or structural engineers.

When Do Gensler Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Gensler's summer internships open in winter, not fall. Applications for summer 2026 opened around the first week of January 2026 (6 January was the earliest announcement we found), a few offices posted later in February, and most reqs said they'd close in late February or early March 2026. The year before looked the same: offices announced summer 2025 openings on 8 and 21 January 2025, and 2024 copy also said early March. So applications for summer 2027 are expected to open around early January 2027 and close around late February to early March 2027. That's about five months of lead time to a June start. One more change this year: Gensler moved its careers board from Workday to Avature in spring 2026, so search the new board, not old Workday links.

Office internships for summer 2027 expected to post, one req per office and discipline. Reviews are rolling and seats can fill before the posting closes, so apply in the first week or two.

Late February to early April 2027EXPECTED

Most office reqs expected to close by late February or early March 2027. The Summer Fellowship and Gensler's scholarships are expected to close around mid-March to 1 April 2027, with fellowship decisions in mid-April.

A 10-week, full-time internship in your office, expected to run from early June to early August 2027. Design interns return to school afterward.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Gensler's window is short and its review is rolling. Summer 2026 postings were open for roughly six to eight weeks, and every one we read said "applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and available positions may be filled before the posting closes." An office with one or two seats can fill them in the first few weeks.

The portfolio is what slows people down. Gensler says submissions without work samples, or sent as Word files, won't be considered. If you start the portfolio in January, you'll be applying in February, near the end of the window. Start now, and apply the week your office posts.

Which Gensler Internship Programs Should You Target?

Gensler posts one req per discipline per office, plus a national fellowship. These are the summer 2026 tracks we could identify, which show what to expect for summer 2027.

Search the Gensler Careers Marketplace from January, and read the Summer Fellowship page for its separate two-part application.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Gensler's requirements differ by track, and two of them rule people out quickly:

• Year in school (architecture and interior design): you must have "completed your third year of an undergraduate program or first year of a graduate program" and be returning to school. The reqs say "This internship is not for recent graduates."

• Accreditation: a NAAB-accredited architecture program or CIDA-accredited interior design program is "highly preferred."

• Portfolio: required for design roles, as a PDF or an online portfolio that isn't password protected; "Submissions made in Microsoft Word and/or without work samples will not be considered."

• Other tracks: the New York PR role wanted students who'd finished their second year; Research Institute roles took graduate students and strong juniors or seniors.

• In office: every internship is full time and in person, and Gensler looks for applicants with "compelling connections to a particular location." No GPA minimum or sponsorship policy appears on the reqs we read.

What If You've Already Graduated?

Then the office internships aren't for you, because they're reserved for students returning to school. Recent graduates have two other doors. The Summer Fellowship accepted recent graduates in 2026, along with final-year undergraduates and graduate students, in architecture, design, real estate, policy and related fields. Gensler also posts entry-level Junior designer roles year round, several asking for zero to three years of experience.

What Skills Does Gensler Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Gensler's req text is consistent across offices, so a few demands come up again and again in the eight summer 2026 reqs we read:

• Software: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign on six; Revit on four, required for architecture and design technology; Rhino or SketchUp on the design reqs.

• How you work: team player in seven, analytical skills, communication and presentation in six each.

• Curiosity about technology: the Los Angeles architecture req gives priority to candidates curious about generative AI, computational design and XR, and research roles ask for Python, R or GIS.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Architecture and interior design students should still lead with studio work; an Externship project adds range, especially for research, brand and strategy roles.

What Is the Gensler Application and Interview Process Like?

Gensler doesn't publish its interview format. This is the process its reqs and pages describe:

1. Pick one office and one discipline. Each req covers one office or region, and Gensler advises applying in your "primary location of interest."

2. Apply on the Avature board in January. Submit a resume, cover letter and PDF portfolio; work samples are capped at 5 MB on Gensler's how-to-apply page.

3. Fellowship applicants complete two parts. Part I is the online application with resume and portfolio; Part II asks for three or four curated work samples and short essay answers.

4. Interviews. Expect to walk interviewers through your portfolio projects: your design approach, process and what you learned.

5. Offers. Reviews are rolling; fellowship decisions came in mid-April last cycle.

Gensler also runs the Brinkmann and Opportunity scholarships, which closed on 1 April 2026; Brinkmann winners and finalists may be considered for a paid internship.

What Students on Reddit Say

Gensler comes up in architecture and design subreddits mostly as a comparison point with smaller firms.

A former Gensler employee told a grad student weighing a Gensler internship offer that the experience depends on the studio you join, because each Gensler office is made up of studio teams that work almost like separate firms. Others in the thread split on brand name versus broader hands-on work at a small firm.

A 2026 thread about students who only applied to big firms says Gensler-style internships are very competitive in the current market. One commenter argued that a large-firm internship can mean routine production work for the summer, while small firms let you do more.

An interior design master's student who interviewed at Gensler and other large firms for summer 2026 without an offer got advice from a large-firm intern interviewer: strong portfolios get the interview, and in it you should explain each project's design approach, process and lessons clearly.

How Do You Stand Out for a Gensler Internship?

Three moves that fit how Gensler hires.

First, apply to one office you have a real reason to be in. Gensler's how-to-apply page says it looks for people with "compelling connections to a particular location." Say why that city, and tailor the cover letter to that office's work.

Second, make the portfolio do the talking. Show process, not just finished renderings: hand sketches, study models, and the reasoning behind each design move. Keep it a clean PDF under 5 MB.

Third, show curiosity about technology. The summer 2026 Los Angeles architecture req gave priority to candidates curious about "new and innovative applications of technology", naming generative AI, computational design, XR and 3D printing. One parametric or visualization experiment in your portfolio can set you apart.

Gensler doesn't publish a class size or conversion rate, but design interns return to school, so think of the summer as your entry to its Junior designer pipeline.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Gensler internship?

No. Summer 2026 ran from 2 June to 7 August and its postings closed in late February to early March 2026. Nothing is open for summer 2027 yet either: on 3 October 2026 Gensler had no US internship postings. Expect summer 2027 office internships to post around early January 2027.

When do Gensler summer 2027 internship applications open?

Around early January 2027, based on the last two cycles. Summer 2026 internships opened in the first week of January 2026 and most closed by early March, and summer 2025 followed the same pattern. Reviews are rolling, so apply in the first week or two your office posts.

How much do Gensler interns get paid?

Gensler's summer 2026 US reqs listed $23 to $31 an hour, depending on office, discipline and year in school. Los Angeles architecture paid $26 to $28.50, New York design technology and PR $28 to $31, Research Institute roles $23 to $25, and the Summer Fellowship $23.50 to $31.

Can recent graduates apply to Gensler internships?

Not to the office internships. The architecture, interior design and PR reqs say they aren't for recent graduates, and design interns must be returning to school. Recent graduates could apply to the Summer Fellowship in 2026, or they can look at Gensler's entry-level Junior designer roles instead.

What do I need to apply for a Gensler design internship?

A resume, a cover letter and a portfolio as a PDF, or a link to an online portfolio that isn't password protected. Gensler says Word files or applications without work samples won't be considered. Architecture reqs also required Revit plus Rhino or SketchUp, and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

What is the Gensler Summer Fellowship?

A paid, full-time research program on the future of cities for final-year undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates in architecture, design, real estate, policy and related fields. The 2026 application had two parts, including curated work samples and short essays, closed around 1 April 2026, and decisions came in mid-April.

Where are Gensler internships located?

In individual US offices. Summer 2026 reqs covered Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Tampa and Morristown, New Jersey, plus regional interior design reqs for the South Central and Southeast regions. You apply to one office, and Gensler recommends the location you have a real connection to.

Does Gensler hire engineering students as interns?

Rarely. Gensler says it doesn't offer building engineering services and doesn't typically hire civil, mechanical, electrical or structural engineers. The summer 2026 sustainability internship in Washington DC was the exception, open to engineering students with a sustainability concentration. Engineers have better odds at firms like AECOM or Jacobs.

Gensler's summer 2027 internships are expected to open in early January 2027, so use the fall to finish your portfolio. A remote Externship can add a finished brand, research or strategy project to it before the window opens.
