Last updated: October 2026
Formlabs has 29 paid US internships open right now, all on-site in Somerville, MA. Fourteen are for summer 2027 and fifteen for a winter/spring 2027 cohort that starts in January. Every posting lists a weekly pay range, from $1,250 to $2,250 for a 40-hour week. Formlabs runs three cohorts a year (fall, winter/spring and summer), each posted on its own timeline, so the nearest open door depends on when you can start. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026 and intern in summer 2027, or in January if you can start then. Thirteen of the 14 summer reqs sit on a separate Greenhouse board that the careers page doesn't list.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often in 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship fits Formlabs' sourcing and operations internships, and the SQL & Database Architecture Externship with Breaking Games builds the data skills behind test and reliability work. No open Externship teaches CAD or mechanical design. Explore all Externships.
What Is a Formlabs Internship?
A Formlabs internship is a paid, full-time, on-site placement at the 3D printing company in Somerville, MA. Formlabs was founded in 2011 by three MIT graduate students, and its company page cites 750+ employees and 130,000+ printers sold. Interns work on hardware, electrical, manufacturing, materials, software, sourcing and operations teams, and the careers page promises mentorship, social events and a chance to pitch a project at the annual Hackathon. Formlabs runs fall, winter/spring and summer cohorts. It doesn't publish a class size or a conversion rate.

When Do Formlabs Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Formlabs posts each cohort on its own clock, and we measured the dates from Greenhouse and archived copies of its internships page. The fall 2025 cohort was posted from May 9 to July 16, 2025, and winter/spring 2026 from July 25 to October 2, 2025. For 2026, winter/spring 2027 reqs went up from August 14 to October 22, and summer 2027 reqs from September 8 to October 14. That puts the summer postings about 7.5 to 9 months ahead of a May or June start and the winter/spring ones about 3 to 5 months ahead of January. We couldn't find archived summer 2026 intern-board dates, so the summer pattern rests on this one cycle.
Applications are open. On October 26, 2026, 29 US internships were live across two Greenhouse boards: 15 for winter/spring 2027 and 14 for summer 2027, all in Somerville, MA.
Winter/Spring 2027 is the nearest cohort. All 15 of its reqs went up between August 14 and October 22, and Formlabs removes a req when it's filled. If you can start in January, apply to those first.
Winter/Spring 2027 cohort. Some postings say the term runs through May or June.
May or June to August 2027, full time on-site in Somerville. Formlabs says interns can pitch a project at its annual Hackathon.
Fall 2027 reqs are expected from about May to July 2027, and summer 2028 reqs from about September 2027, if the 2025 and 2026 patterns repeat. Low confidence: we have one dated summer cycle.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Formlabs' postings are rolling. None lists a close date, and Greenhouse takes a req down when Formlabs fills or closes it, so a role you meant to apply to later can simply disappear. The winter/spring reqs are the most time-sensitive because the term starts in January, about two and a half months out. Engineering applications also need a portfolio, and Formlabs says it won't consider an application without one. Build the portfolio first, then apply to the summer and winter/spring versions of your role together.
Which Formlabs Internship Programs Should You Target?
Each team posts its own internship per cohort. This table groups the 29 US postings by team.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware and mechanical (Mechanical, Hardware R&D, Hardware Systems Integration, Hardware Test, Hardware Reliability) | Printer performance studies, test setups, electro-mechanical debugging, prototypes | Summer or winter/spring | $1,575 to $1,950 per week; portfolio required |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Formlabs states few formal gates. This is what the postings say, read on October 26, 2026.
• Portfolio: engineering postings say "A portfolio of your previous engineering work/projects is required. Your application will not be considered without a portfolio." 15 of the 29 postings mention a portfolio.
• Experience: the Hardware Systems Integration posting asks for one or more of lab research, project team membership, or prior internship or work experience.
• Class year, GPA and work authorization: none of the intern postings we read states a class year, a GPA minimum or a visa policy. Ask the recruiter before assuming either way.
• Graduate-only: the Industrial Design Fellowship (6 months) requires a completed degree, and the board's "Graduates" roles are full-time new-grad jobs, not internships.
• Housing: Formlabs provides no housing or relocation assistance.

Is a Portfolio Really Required?
For engineering roles, yes, in Formlabs' own words. The portfolio line appears in the mechanical, electrical, hardware and manufacturing postings, while several sourcing, materials and software postings don't mention one. A portfolio can be class projects, a club build team, lab work or personal builds. Treat it as the main screen and put your best two or three projects first.
What Skills Does Formlabs Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The skills come from what the 29 postings ask. Python appears in 19 and CAD tools in 15, and 15 say a portfolio is needed. Cross-functional collaboration and communication each appear in 13, and data analysis in 11. C or C++ is rarer, named in five, mostly the software and embedded roles. Electrical roles add PCB design, microcontrollers and soldering, and the Desktop Software role asks for modern C++ (C++17) and Qt.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship you can finish while the postings are still open. Fit is partial, because no open Externship covers CAD or mechanical design.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data analysis and SQL | Hardware Systems Integration: Python scripts and queries for reliability studies | SQL & Database Architecture with Breaking Games |
| Operations and sourcing | Global Sourcing, Sourcing Program Management and Global Operations postings | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Embedded and IoT systems thinking | Embedded Software and Electrical Engineering postings | Hydroficient Advanced: IoT Cyber Defense |
| Product prioritization | Cross-functional collaboration with engineering teams | BeReal Product Management |
No open Externship teaches CAD, PCB design or C++, so build those through coursework, a club build team or a personal project and show them in your portfolio.
What Is the Formlabs Application and Interview Process Like?
Formlabs describes its process as "collaborative and focused on finding the highest-impact role for you." Here is what we can say.
1. Pick a cohort and role. Check both Greenhouse boards, since the careers page lists only the main one.
2. Apply on Greenhouse. Upload a resume and, for engineering roles, a portfolio.
3. Interviews. Formlabs doesn't publish the stages. One candidate on r/formlabs said their second-round mechanical engineering interview was a design challenge.
4. Offer and start. Terms begin in January for winter/spring and May or June for summer.
Formlabs publishes no interview questions or timing between steps.
What We Found on Reddit
Nothing solid. The one recent r/formlabs thread is a candidate asking for tips on a second-round mechanical engineering interview, and the only reply is a one-line prompt not tied to a real interview. We'd rather show no quotes than pass that off as consensus.
How Do You Stand Out for a Formlabs Internship?
First, build the portfolio before you apply, because Formlabs says engineering applications without one aren't considered. Lead with projects you built and tested, not only designed. Second, match your projects to the team: reliability and test roles want Python scripts and studies, electrical roles want boards you've assembled and debugged. Third, apply to both cohorts you're free for. The winter/spring and summer postings are separate reqs, and several teams post both. Formlabs doesn't publish a class size or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Formlabs internship?
No. Summer 2026 internships ran last summer and are over. Open now are summer 2027 (14 postings, May or June to August) and winter/spring 2027 (15 postings, January start), posted August 14 to October 22, 2026 across Formlabs' two Greenhouse boards. Both cohorts are taking applications.
When do Formlabs internship applications open?
Formlabs posts each cohort separately. Summer 2027 reqs went up September 8 to October 14, 2026, and winter/spring 2027 reqs from August 14. In the prior cycle, fall 2025 postings ran May to July and winter/spring 2026 ran July to October. We expect summer 2028 reqs from about September 2027, with low confidence.
How much does Formlabs pay interns?
Formlabs lists pay per week for a 40-hour week: $1,250 to $2,250 across the 29 US postings, paid bi-weekly. Most hardware, manufacturing and sourcing roles list $1,575 to $1,950, software roles $1,850 to $2,250, and Build Team $1,250 to $1,625. Housing and relocation aren't provided.
Where are Formlabs internships located?
All 29 US postings are on-site in Somerville, MA. Formlabs' company page lists Boston as its global headquarters, and other US sites in Ohio and Wisconsin have no intern postings today. Formlabs also posts intern roles in Budapest, Hungary, which this guide doesn't cover. There is no housing or relocation help.
Do you need a portfolio for a Formlabs internship?
For engineering roles, yes. The postings say a portfolio of previous engineering work is required and applications without one won't be considered. Fifteen of the 29 postings mention a portfolio, mostly mechanical, electrical, hardware and manufacturing roles. Include your two or three strongest built-and-tested projects.
Can international students apply to Formlabs internships?
The postings we read don't state a work-authorization or visa policy, and they set no class-year or GPA rule. We can't say either way. Ask the Formlabs recruiter before you apply, and check whether the specific req names a requirement, since a posting's own text governs.
Why can't I find all the Formlabs internships on its careers page?
Formlabs runs two Greenhouse boards. The careers page lists the main board, with 14 winter/spring reqs and one summer req, but 13 of the 14 summer 2027 reqs sit on the separate formlabsinternships board, which the page doesn't link. Check both, or you'll miss most of the summer wave.
Do Formlabs interns get full-time offers?
Formlabs doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its board lists new-grad roles with graduation-month titles, which shows a new-grad pipeline exists, but nothing states how many interns convert. Treat any percentage you see on job-board or review sites as unverified, and ask your recruiter about your team.
Build your portfolio, then apply to both the summer and winter/spring versions of your role on both boards this week. While you wait, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to talk about in the interview.
