There's no single Field Museum internship application. Each department posts its own paid internship with its own deadline, and in summer 2026 those deadlines ran from March 1 to June 30. The undergraduate research and collections internships we read paid $17.75 an hour at 35 hours a week in Chicago. Nothing is open today: the museum's job board listed 10 openings on October 16, 2026 and none was an internship.

For summer 2027 the plain-words version is this: you apply roughly between January and June 2027, one department at a time, and you intern in summer 2027. That window is a projection from last year's deadlines, because the museum doesn't publish a calendar.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, and they suit the quiet months before the Field Museum's postings go up. What Is a Field Museum Internship?

A Field Museum internship is a placement in one department of the Field Museum, the Chicago natural history museum that focuses on "dynamic new exhibitions, scientific research, and educational programs concerning the Earth's environments and cultures." The museum says its internships are open to undergraduates and graduate students of all majors, plus recent graduates, and that most paid internships sit in its Collections, Conservation and Research departments.

The 2026 postings give a sense of the work: photographing and measuring amphibian specimens, digitizing plant fossils, cataloguing anthropology collections, and supporting institutional giving. Interns work alongside the museum's scientists and researchers, according to the internships page.

When Do Field Museum Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

The Field Museum doesn't run one recruiting season. Each department posts its own internship, and the 2026 deadlines were spread across four months: March 1 (Anthropology, Mullins-Martin), March 6 (Women in Science), March 13 (Anthropology, Boone Scholars), April 24 (Institutional Giving), May 8 (plant fossils), May 20 (Geology) and June 30 (Culture & Engagement, a fall-start role). The earliest deadline came about 2.5 months before the earliest start, May 18, and the later ones sat two to 11 weeks before their start dates.

Posting dates weren't visible on the 2026 pages, so the open dates for 2027 are our estimate and could be wrong.

No internship is open. The job board shows 10 openings, including exhibition preparators, engineers and a security officer, but no interns. Closed 2026 postings still load, so check the board list rather than a saved link.

Prepare an unofficial transcript, a resume and a cover letter, and line up one recommender, since some postings asked for both. Read the 2026 postings to see which collections and labs host interns. Notre Dame anthropology students have their own department deadline of April 5, 2027 at noon.

Expected January to March 2027EXPECTEDHARD DEADLINE

Summer 2027 internship postings are expected to start appearing, department by department. Each carries its own deadline, and the Women in Science internships had a March 6 deadline in 2026.

Expected March to June 2027EXPECTED

Deadlines for summer 2027 are expected between about March and June, based on 2026. Interview contact in 2026 came 5 to 30 days after the deadline.

Summer 2027

Starts in 2026 ran from late May to late June, for 6, 10 or 12 weeks. A fall-start, part-time role (14 hours a week) also posted in 2026, so the museum hires outside summer too.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Every Field Museum internship posting we read had a fixed deadline, and none accepts late applications. The Institutional Giving posting, for example, closed April 24, 2026 at 5 p.m. That makes the deadline absolute, not a suggestion.

Because departments post separately, there's no first week to catch. Check the job board monthly from January, apply to each posting that fits as soon as you see it, and don't wait for one big window. A closed 2026 posting still renders a start-application button, so confirm the deadline in the text.

The museum also lists high school options on its internships page: Women in Science (high school and undergraduate), Chicago Green Ambassadors and Digital Learning. The museum's old Women in Science link returned a 404 on October 16, so use the job board to find it. Notre Dame anthropology students can also apply through a department partner internship, which is limited to Notre Dame students.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The museum's rules, from the internships page and the 2026 postings:

• Who: undergraduates and graduate-level students of all majors, plus recent graduates (6 months maximum).

• Year in school: the Institutional Giving posting wanted at least one full undergraduate year and no more than one calendar year since graduation at the start.

• Program-specific rules: the Women in Science internships are intended for female and non-binary students, as the postings state.

• Pay: paid internships are "highly competitive" and mostly in Collections, Conservation and Research; unpaid ones may count for academic credit or university funding.

• Where to apply: the museum's own site only; the postings say applications through other sites aren't considered.

• Not published: GPA and citizenship rules.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

The Field Museum doesn't state a GPA requirement on its internships page or in the 2026 postings we read, so no cutoff can be cited. Postings do ask for an unofficial transcript, and some for a letter of recommendation. What they emphasize is fit to the project: a biology background for zoology, anthropology coursework for the anthropology collections, and a year of undergraduate study for Institutional Giving.

What Skills Does the Field Museum Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The Field Museum publishes no skills list, so this page reads the 10 internship postings from 2026 that were still viewable. Research or lab work and attention to detail lead, followed by written communication and specimen handling.

The three buckets look like this. Collections work: photographing and measuring specimens, image editing, digitizing and cataloguing. Data work: spreadsheets and organizing taxonomic data tables. Communication: memos and briefs in External Affairs, science communication in Women in Science, and Spanish as a plus in Institutional Giving.

A finished project gives your cover letter something concrete to describe, and the postings ask each applicant to match a specific collection, lab or department.

What Is the Field Museum Application and Interview Process Like?

Every internship runs through the museum's own job board, and the steps are the same.

1. Watch the job board for each internship posting. They appear department by department, not together.

2. Apply on the museum's site only. The postings say applications through other sites aren't considered.

3. Submit your materials: in 2026 these were a cover letter, resume and unofficial transcript, and sometimes one letter of recommendation.

4. Re-upload the right documents each time if you apply to several positions, as the postings instruct.

5. Interview. The Women in Science example used virtual interviews, and the postings listed a contact-by date, such as March 13 for a March 1 deadline.

6. Offer and orientation. Start dates in 2026 ranged from May 18 to July 27, with an on-site HR orientation for Women in Science interns on June 22.

The postings give a contact-by date, so if you pass it without hearing back, email the contact on the posting.

What the Community Says

We found no first-hand Reddit account of a Field Museum internship; the one thread about the museum covers hiring in general.

In a 2024 r/AskChicago thread on getting hired at the Field Museum, commenters said museum jobs are competitive and that volunteering is the usual way in. Other commenters said pay in exhibitions is low. The thread is about staff jobs rather than internships, so treat it as background.

How Do You Stand Out for a Field Museum Internship?

The museum doesn't publish applicant counts, cohort sizes or an acceptance rate, though it calls paid internships "highly competitive." No number here would be sourced.

First, match the posting. Each internship names a collection, lab or department, and the 2026 postings describe specific projects such as an illustrated catalog of South American amphibian specimens. Name the project in your cover letter.

Second, show hands-on work with data or specimens, even from a class. Image editing, data tables and careful measurement appear in the postings.

Third, have transcript and recommender ready so you can apply the week a posting goes up.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Field Museum internship?

No. The 2026 postings had deadlines between March 1 and June 30, and none is open now. The museum's job board listed 10 openings on October 16, 2026, none an internship. The next step is to watch the board from January 2027 for summer 2027 postings.

When do Field Museum summer 2027 internship applications open?

The museum hasn't published dates. Each department posts its own internship, and 2026 deadlines ran from March 1 to June 30. We expect postings from about January to March 2027, but that is a projection, because open dates weren't visible on the 2026 pages. Check the job board monthly.

Does the Field Museum pay interns?

Often, yes. The paid undergraduate internships we read in 2026 paid $17.75 an hour, and the Boone Scholars graduate role paid $18.50. The museum says paid internships are highly competitive and mostly in Collections, Conservation and Research. It also offers unpaid internships that may qualify for academic credit.

Who can apply for a Field Museum internship?

Undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates (up to 6 months after finishing), in any major. Individual postings add rules, such as the Women in Science internships for female and non-binary students. The museum doesn't publish a GPA or citizenship requirement, so read each posting before you apply.

Where do I apply for a Field Museum internship?

On the Field Museum's own job board, linked from fieldmuseum.org. The postings say applications through other sites aren't considered. Upload a cover letter, resume and unofficial transcript, and a recommendation letter if the posting asks for one. Re-upload the right documents each time you apply to a different position.

Is there a Field Museum internship for high school students?

Yes. The museum lists Women in Science for high school and undergraduate students, Chicago Green Ambassadors for high school students, and Digital Learning Internships that pair high school students with a museum expert. The old Women in Science page returned a 404 on October 16, 2026, so start from the internships page.

Are Field Museum internships in person?

Yes. The 2026 postings were on site in Chicago, typically 35 hours a week, and the Institutional Giving internship required being in person at least three days a week. A part-time fall role ran 14 hours a week. The museum doesn't list remote internships on its internships page.

Does a Field Museum internship lead to a full-time job?

The museum doesn't publish an intern-to-staff conversion rate. Its internships page promotes training, work alongside scientists and invites to staff events, which build contacts. Reddit commenters in a 2024 thread said volunteering and networking are the usual routes into staff jobs, though that thread covered hiring in general.

No Field Museum internship is open yet, so use the months before the postings to build proof: a remote Externship gives your cover letter a finished project to point to.
