EMC Insurance's summer 2027 internships are open now, and interviews have already started. On October 5, 2026 the Des Moines commercial insurer's student job board and main careers board together listed 19 summer 2027 intern postings, in claims, underwriting, software engineering, IT and marketing and communications. Two communications teams said they'd begin interviewing on October 1, and a Data Science internship already closed on October 2 after about three weeks.
In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and at EMC the door opened on August 31. Claims and software interns earn $19.50 to $23 an hour, most roles ask for a 3.0 GPA, and six can be done from home anywhere in the United States.
What Is an EMC Insurance Internship?
An EMC Insurance internship is a paid summer placement in EMC's Experience EMC program, working in a department such as claims, underwriting, software engineering, IT or marketing and communications. EMC Insurance is the trade name of Employers Mutual Casualty Company, founded in Des Moines, Iowa in 1911 to write workers' compensation for Iowa manufacturers; it now sells commercial property and casualty insurance, bonds and life insurance and has about 2,100 employees, according to its history page and a September 2026 release. The internships page lists lunch with EMC's executive team, skills workshops, a resume workshop and a volunteer day. It isn't EMCOR, the construction firm, or Dell EMC.

When Do EMC Insurance Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
EMC's summer 2027 wave posted between August 31 and October 2, 2026, about nine months before the internships start. Most claims, underwriting and software roles went up between September 14 and 28. The calendar looks stable: the summer 2026 Finance intern posted on September 3, 2025, so applications for summer 2028 are expected around late August to early September 2027. Interview timing is in some postings: Community Involvement and Corporate Communications planned to begin interviewing on October 1, and Content and Marketing in mid-October. Actuarial, HR, Agile and Loss Control are on EMC's list of intern areas but had no posting on October 5, 2026.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 19 postings across claims, underwriting, software engineering, IT and communications. Interviews began October 1 for two communications roles, and the Data Science internship closed on October 2.
Content and Marketing interviews are planned to start. Applications stay open on a rolling basis, but interview slots fill first, so apply before then.
Expected interviews and offers for the claims, underwriting and software roles. Postings can close without warning: the Data Science role was up for about three weeks.
Actuarial, HR, Agile and Loss Control are EMC intern areas with no posting yet; if they run this cycle, they'll appear on the same board. Check it monthly.
The internships run in summer 2027; claims roles last 12 weeks. Successful claims interns are invited to apply for full-time jobs, and summer 2028 postings are expected around late August 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
EMC accepts applications on a rolling basis, and its postings say so: applications "will continue to be accepted," but "interested students are encouraged to apply early." That advice matters because interviews start while the roles are still posted. Community Involvement and Corporate Communications planned to begin interviewing on October 1, and Content and Marketing in mid-October. Roles also close without a stated deadline: the Data Science internship posted in mid-September and was gone by October 2. Underwriting roles are one per branch, so each city has very few seats. Apply this week.
Which EMC Insurance Internship Programs Should You Target?
EMC posted 19 summer 2027 internships, grouped here by area. Each underwriting role sits in one branch market.
| Area | Roles (postings) | Location | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claims | Complex & Specialty Casualty, Workers' Compensation, Fast Track, Claims (Data), Claims (Property), Medical Management, branch Claims (7) | Work from home anywhere in the U.S. (4), work from home in Iowa (1), Iowa (2) | Analysis, investigation, writing; $19.50 to $23 an hour on 5 |
| Underwriting | Branch underwriting interns in Des Moines, Dallas, Kansas City, Wichita, the Chicago area, Providence and southeast Pennsylvania (7) | Hybrid from the branch city; Northeast roles remote for CT, MA or RI residents (as posted) | Business major, analysis, agent communication |
| Software engineering | Software Engineering intern (1) | Work from home anywhere in the U.S. | Programming basics, testing, code reviews; $19.50 to $23 an hour |
| IT | Digital Workplace Experience intern (1, season not stated) | On-site, Des Moines corporate office | Endpoint tools, PowerShell or Python preferred |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
EMC's 19 summer 2027 postings share most requirements:
• GPA: a cumulative 3.00 or higher on all 19 postings; it's listed as preferred on Software Engineering. The closed Data Science role asked for 3.5.
• Class standing: completion of junior year preferred on most roles; completion of sophomore year preferred for Digital Workplace.
• Major: business for claims and underwriting (underwriting prefers insurance, marketing or finance); computer science, software engineering or MIS for tech roles; communications or public relations for communications.
• Interest: 13 postings ask for an interest in a property and casualty insurance career.
• Work authorization: the postings don't state a sponsorship policy; ask the recruiter if it matters for you.
• Portfolio: Content and Marketing says writing samples or a portfolio may be requested during interviews.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff at EMC?
For most roles, treat it as one. Eighteen postings list a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher under education requirements, and only Software Engineering calls it preferred. Class standing is softer: completion of junior year is "preferred," so a strong sophomore can still apply, especially for the Digital Workplace role, which prefers completion of sophomore year.

What Skills Does EMC Insurance Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
EMC's intern postings share one skills block, so the core is consistent: attention to detail, sound decision-making and problem-solving, analytical ability, clear verbal and written communication, organization and good computer skills. On top of that, claims and underwriting roles ask for a business major and an interest in a property and casualty insurance career, tech roles add programming basics or scripting, and communications roles add copywriting and project coordination.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each EMC skill maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss in interviews this fall.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Data for claims decisions | Claims (Data): "Assist claims team in building data solutions for decision making" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Software and databases | Software Engineering: development, testing and code reviews | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Endpoint and security work | Digital Workplace: "patching, security, software deployment, backups, and device management" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Content and copywriting | Content & Marketing and Corporate Communications: drafting, copywriting, building content | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy |
| Health data in claims | Claims Intern, Medical Management and Workers' Compensation | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
The claims data role is the clearest match: a Breaking Games project ends with a data-backed recommendation, which is what "data solutions for decision making" asks for.
What Is the EMC Insurance Application and Interview Process Like?
EMC doesn't publish an interview format, but its postings and board show the steps:
1. Create a Workday account and apply. Apply on the EMC internships board; each role is a separate posting, so apply to each one you want.
2. Check the posting's interview note. Some roles state when interviews begin: October 1 for Community Involvement and Corporate Communications, mid-October for Content and Marketing.
3. Prepare samples if relevant. Content and Marketing may ask for writing samples or a portfolio during interviews.
4. Interviews. EMC doesn't describe its interview rounds. Prepare examples for the shared skills block: decision-making, analysis, communication and attention to detail.
5. Offer. Claims interns who do well are invited to apply for full-time roles after the summer.
Our behavioral interview guide shows how to turn those skills into clear examples.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has a little first-hand EMC internship talk plus comments from adjusters and Des Moines locals.
A former community college student said they interned at EMC Insurance as a commercial lines underwriter and called it a great time and good experience before moving into finance.
Asked about entry-level IT work in Des Moines, a commenter said EMC and Wellmark both run paid internship programs and like local candidates.
Adjusters who knew EMC staff said people there love it, citing good medical coverage, a pension and senior management they like; a moderator noted EMC is a small carrier.
How Do You Stand Out for an EMC Insurance Internship?
Three moves. First, apply this week, and to the right branch. Interviews have started and underwriting roles are one per city, so apply where you can actually work hybrid, or pick a work-from-home claims or software role. Second, know that EMC is commercial-only. It left personal lines in 2018, so talk about business insurance, workers' compensation and bonds, not car or home policies. Third, show the shared skills with evidence. Nearly every posting asks for decision-making, analysis, communication and attention to detail; bring one example of each with a result. EMC publishes no applicant count or conversion rate; its claims postings say successful interns are invited to apply for full-time roles.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 EMC Insurance internship?
No. Summer 2026 has already run. The open door is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 EMC had 19 summer 2027 intern postings live in claims, underwriting, software, IT and communications. Interviews began October 1 for some roles, and the Data Science internship closed October 2, so apply now.
How much do EMC Insurance interns make?
Six postings, five claims roles and Software Engineering, list $19.50 to $23.00 an hour, depending on location. The underwriting, IT and communications postings don't state pay. EMC's internships page describes the pay as competitive. The summer 2026 Finance intern posting used the same $19.50 to $23.00 range.
Can I do an EMC Insurance internship remotely?
Yes, for several roles. Four claims roles, Software Engineering and Content and Marketing can be done from home anywhere in the U.S., and Fast Track Claims from home in Iowa. Northeast underwriting roles are remote for residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Other underwriting roles are hybrid in their branch city.
What GPA does EMC Insurance require for interns?
A cumulative 3.00 or higher. All 19 summer 2027 postings name it, and only Software Engineering lists it as preferred rather than required. The Data Science internship, now closed, asked for 3.5. Most postings also prefer completion of junior year, though Digital Workplace prefers completion of sophomore year.
When do EMC summer 2027 applications close?
No posting states a deadline. Applications are rolling and stay open until roles are filled, but postings encourage early applications, and interviews began October 1 for some roles. The Data Science internship closed after about three weeks, so don't assume any role will stay open long.
How long is the EMC Insurance internship?
The claims postings describe a 12-week summer 2027 paid internship, and Fast Track Claims calls it a 12-week program that exposes interns to EMC's business units. Underwriting, software, IT and communications postings don't state a length. Ask about dates during your interview if it matters for your schedule.
Does EMC Insurance hire interns full-time?
EMC says it invites successful interns to apply. All seven claims postings say successful interns "are invited to apply for regular full-time positions," and EMC's careers page says an internship might land you your first full-time job. EMC doesn't publish a conversion rate.
Is EMC Insurance the same as EMCOR or Dell EMC?
No. EMC Insurance is the trade name of Employers Mutual Casualty Company, a Des Moines, Iowa insurer founded in 1911 that sells commercial property and casualty insurance, bonds and life insurance. EMCOR is a construction and facilities services firm, and Dell EMC is a technology brand.
EMC's interviews have started and roles close without notice. Apply this week, and build a project to talk about alongside it: a remote Externship gives you a finished piece of data or writing work for your EMC interviews.
