Last updated: September 2026
Devon Energy produces roughly 840,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day with about 3,000 employees, and that ratio is the whole story: enormous output, a small technical workforce, and real leverage on every engineer, geoscientist and data engineer in the building. The internship follows the same logic. All six of Devon's Summer 2027 intern requisitions went live between August 20 and September 2, 2026, and every one of them is open right now with no published close date. A technology intern writing on Glassdoor in June 2024 described the class as "around 1-3 interns per unique job title" and reported that rising juniors in their cohort earned $29–$34 an hour and rising seniors $35–$42, with corporate housing on top. That is one intern's account of summer 2024, not a Devon pay scale, but it tells you the seats are few and worth having. In May 2026 Devon closed a $26 billion all-stock merger with Coterra, so a student starting in summer 2027 joins a company that just doubled its map.

What Is a Devon Energy Internship?
A Devon Energy internship is a summer placement at a US independent exploration and production company that describes itself as having "approximately 3,000 employees, operating in five core areas across the country". Devon names ten intern disciplines: Engineering, Technology, Geoscience, Accounting & Tax, Supply Chain, Legal, Energy Marketing, Digital Security, Energy/Land Management, and Human Resources. Six of those ten had live Summer 2027 requisitions as of September 6, 2026. The program pillars Devon publishes are professional development, mentorship and leadership access, and meaningful project assignments, alongside relocation support, schedule flexibility, and a benefits line that appears near-verbatim in five requisitions: "Access to the Well fitness facility, competitive compensation, and corporate housing." Devon rates 4.1 out of 5 across 512 Indeed reviews, with compensation and benefits at 4.4 on Glassdoor.

When Do Devon Energy Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Devon is running ahead of the typical energy recruiting calendar. Its entire Summer 2027 intern slate went live in a thirteen-day burst between August 20 and September 2, 2026, and every requisition returns no end date in Devon's applicant-tracking data. That is a verified absence, not a gap in the research: Devon publishes no application close date at all. What replaces the deadline is the fall campus calendar. Devon's early-careers page names seven schools it recruits at during fall 2026, and career-fair season runs September through November, which is when the seats realistically go. A student reading this page in January 2027 has probably missed Geoscience and Engineering. Program start and end dates are not published anywhere, so plan for a standard summer and confirm with the recruiter.
All six Summer 2027 requisitions are live: Engineering, Geoscience, Technology, Land, Accounting and Energy Marketing. None has a published close date, review is rolling, and a recent intern described roughly one to three interns per job title. Apply this week and pick the track your class year and major actually qualify for.
Devon on campus at Texas A&M, the University of Texas, the University of Oklahoma, Colorado School of Mines, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and the University of Tulsa. Apply online first, then introduce yourself at the table. Roles are pulled when filled, without notice.
The four disciplines that have not posted yet, Supply Chain, Legal, Digital Security and Human Resources, may go live. Devon lists all ten disciplines on its early-careers page but only six had 2027 requisitions on September 6, 2026.
Interviews and offers, rolling. Glassdoor reports an intern interview difficulty of 2.8 out of 5 on a small sample; the question content is not published, so prepare broadly rather than to a script.
Program runs, primarily in Oklahoma City with corporate housing provided. Devon does not publish program length or start and end dates in any requisition.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Three facts stack here and they all point the same way. First, the requisitions are already open, so there is no waiting period to plan around. Second, there is no deadline to work backwards from, which sounds relaxed and is the opposite: with no close date, roles simply disappear when they are filled, and nobody announces it. Third, the class is small. A current technology intern writing in June 2024 put it at roughly one to three interns per unique job title, which means a Geoscience seat in Oklahoma City may be a handful of people company-wide. Add the campus channel, seven named schools with career fairs running September through November, and the practical window closes long before the calendar suggests. Devon also pays returning interns a premium, which tells you the program is built to convert, and a seat you take in 2027 is a seat somebody else does not get in 2028. Apply in the first two weeks the posting is up, in the track you actually qualify for, and treat the fair as the follow-up rather than the application.
Which Devon Energy Internship Programs Should You Target?
Devon lists ten intern disciplines. Six had live Summer 2027 requisitions on September 6, 2026, and they are genuinely different jobs with different eligibility gates, not variations on one program. Read the row that matches your degree before you spend time on the application.

The four remaining disciplines Devon names, Supply Chain, Legal, Digital Security and Human Resources, had no live Summer 2027 requisition on September 6, 2026 and may post later in the fall. Check the Devon interns and graduates page and the Workday board directly rather than relying on job-board mirrors, which stamp their own recency dates.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Devon states eligibility inside each requisition rather than in one place, and the six tracks differ sharply. These are the criteria as written:
• GPA: "GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred" appears in five of the six requisitions. The Technology requisition does not state a GPA at all.
• Class year: Geoscience is master's students only. Engineering and Land are sophomores and juniors. Accounting is sophomores through seniors. Energy Marketing accepts freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Technology states no class year.
• Degree: Engineering wants Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering. Geoscience wants a geoscience degree. Land specifically requires Energy Management. Accounting takes Accounting, Finance or Business. Technology takes IT, Computer Science or Data Science. Energy Marketing has the widest list, spanning finance, economics, business administration, energy management, supply chain, four engineering disciplines and the full data and quantitative set.
• Enrollment: "Full-time student" is stated in five of six requisitions.
• Preferred extras: "Knowledge of oil and gas industry practices is a plus" appears in Engineering, Geoscience, Land and Accounting. Engineering additionally prefers "an understanding of field operations, ideally gained through field experience."
• Visa sponsorship: not stated. None of the six requisitions publishes a sponsorship or work-authorization policy beyond the standard EEO block. Ask the recruiter directly.

Does Devon Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?
The wording is "preferred", not required, and it appears in five of six requisitions. The Technology track states no GPA at all. In practice this means a 2.9 does not auto-reject you, but it does mean the rest of the application has to carry more weight, and at Devon the rest of the application has an unusually clear target. Four of the six requisitions ask for "advanced computer proficiency, with the ability to optimize and automate processes", and five ask you to be "curious and eager to explore AI, data, and technology." That language is in a geoscience requisition and a land requisition, not just the technology one. If you have automated a workflow, a Python script, a Power Query model, a scraper, anything, that story is worth more to a Devon reviewer than a tenth of a GPA point. The harder gates are the ones nobody negotiates: Geoscience really is master's only, and Land really does require an Energy Management degree.
What Skills Does Devon Energy Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Devon's six intern requisitions were read in full from the company's own applicant-tracking system rather than from an aggregator mirror, and the pattern across them is more consistent than you would expect from six unrelated jobs. Every requisition carries the same Preferred Skills and Competencies block: integrity and accountability, adaptability to change, open communication and team collaboration, and effective problem solving with a focus on continuous improvement. Layered on top is the automation-and-AI language, which appears in four and five of the six respectively, including in the geoscience and land requisitions where you would least expect it. Then come the track-specific stacks: Databricks, PySpark, Snowflake, Azure DevOps, Power BI, Power Apps, SharePoint and SQL in Technology; well log interpretation, core evaluation and mapping in Geoscience; OCC and TXRRC regulatory research and land title software in Land; LEAN and automation in Accounting; Excel, PowerPoint and data visualization in Energy Marketing. What does that tell you? Devon is asking every intern, whatever the discipline, to be the person who automates something.

Method: every one of Devon's six live Summer 2027 intern requisitions was read in full and skills were counted by how many requisitions name them. The intended hiring.cafe skill-frequency snapshot returned HTTP 403 and produced no data, so this chart is built entirely from the employer's own requisition text (n=6), which is a smaller but stronger sample. Counts are of requisitions, not of postings or applicants.
How Is Demand for Energy & E&P Interns Moving Right Now?
Energy and E&P intern hiring right now: September 2026
Qualitative signals from Devon's own requisitions and early-careers page · not an aggregate market sample
September 2026 is this page's baseline. The signal is not volume, it is timing and framing: energy employers with small technical cohorts are posting earlier and asking non-technical tracks for technical fluency, which rewards students who apply in the first weeks and can point at a finished data or automation project.
Method: these are qualitative signals read from Devon's six live Summer 2027 requisitions and its early-careers page on September 6, 2026, not aggregate market data. No industry-wide posting sample was available; the hiring.cafe skill-frequency tool returned HTTP 403. Treat this as a September 2026 baseline for one employer, not a market share or growth measurement.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
And every skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project while the Devon requisitions are still open.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Energy market fundamentals & commercial analysis | Energy Marketing track: commodity pricing, supply and demand trends, market access evaluation, midstream and transportation optimization | EIC Energy Transition Venture Capital Market Research |
| Data pipelines, BI dashboards & AI fluency | Technology track: Databricks, PySpark, Snowflake, Azure DevOps, Power BI, plus the “curious about AI and data” line in five of six requisitions | Wayfair AI Agent Engineering for Business Intelligence |
| Operations analytics & process improvement | Supply Chain discipline (not yet posted for 2027) and the Accounting track’s automation and LEAN work on a large physical operation | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy |
How close is the overlap? The EIC project is structured energy-sector market research producing an investment-grade view, which is the Energy Marketing intern's core task rehearsed end to end. The Wayfair project is applied BI and AI-agent engineering on real business data, the nearest match to Devon's named modern stack. And the Amazon project is operational strategy and analytics on a large physical network, which transfers directly to drilling-materials category management and to the process-improvement work Devon's accounting requisition asks for.

What Is the Devon Energy Application and Interview Process Like?
Devon does not publish a step-by-step hiring process. What follows is the application path as the company documents it, plus what Glassdoor reports about the interview:
1. Apply on Workday now. careers.devonenergy.com redirects to Devon's Workday board. There are only about 53 live postings in total, so a manual scan for "Intern" takes a minute.
2. Pick the right track before you apply. The eligibility differences are hard gates, not preferences. Applying to Geoscience as an undergraduate, or to Land without an Energy Management degree, spends an application slot for nothing.
3. Choose your location. Engineering, Geoscience, Technology and Land are posted for Oklahoma City with Houston as an additional location. Accounting and Energy Marketing are Oklahoma City only.
4. Work the career fair. Devon names Texas A&M, the University of Texas, the University of Oklahoma, Colorado School of Mines, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and the University of Tulsa as fall 2026 recruiting targets. Apply online first, then show up in person.
5. Join the Talent Network. Devon's careers page invites candidates to stay connected through its network, which is the only channel for the four disciplines that have not posted yet.
6. Interview. Glassdoor reports an intern interview difficulty of 2.8 out of 5 on a small sample. Devon does not publish a round count or a question list, and the Glassdoor question content is not retrievable, so prepare for behavioral questions plus a track-specific technical conversation rather than to a script.
Bring an automation story regardless of track. Four of the six requisitions ask in writing for "advanced computer proficiency, with the ability to optimize and automate processes", and five ask you to be "curious and eager to explore AI, data, and technology." That is Devon telling you what it wants to hear. Our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool covers the same behavioral-question pressure and format.
What the Community Says
Devon has a real Reddit footprint around employer sentiment and the Oklahoma City reaction to the Coterra merger, but no thread contains a first-hand account of a Devon internship. The cards below therefore come from dated, role-labelled Glassdoor and Indeed intern reviews, all verified against Glassdoor employer E839 (Devon Energy) rather than the similarly named lookalike employer Glassdoor lists beside it.
A technology intern in Oklahoma City writing in June 2024 described the work culture as exceptionally welcoming and said interns were treated extremely well despite the size of the company, rating work-life balance as relaxed. The same review put intern pay in that cohort at roughly $29 to $34 an hour for rising juniors and $35 to $42 for rising seniors, with housing covered in apartments near the tower. The only drawback the reviewer could name was that the job is in Oklahoma City.
A former records-management intern in Oklahoma City, writing in June 2016, described pay as generous and said Devon let them keep working part-time during the school year on top of full-time summers, which most interns were not offered. School was explicitly expected to come first, and benefits became available after a period, which is unusual for an internship. The same reviewer lost a full-time path when an industry downturn brought a round of layoffs.
Not every account is glowing. An intern in Oklahoma City writing in November 2018 criticised Devon's diversity and inclusion efforts as talk rather than practice and described the culture as conservative enough that they would advise being careful about speaking your mind. Read that against the June 2024 technology intern, who rated diversity and inclusion a full five out of five. Both are first-hand, both are about Oklahoma City, and they are six years apart.
How Do You Stand Out When the Cohort Is One to Three People Per Title?
Four moves, all executable this month. First, apply in the track you actually qualify for, and say why in the first line of your cover note. Devon's six requisitions have genuinely different gates, and a reviewer reading a geoscience application from an undergraduate learns only that you did not read the posting. Second, bring an automation story. The language is in the requisitions in black and white, four of six asking for the ability to optimize and automate processes and five asking for curiosity about AI and data, and it is in the geoscience and land requisitions too. Describe a workflow you automated, what it used to cost, and what it costs now. Third, know the Coterra merger. Devon closed a $26 billion all-stock deal in May 2026 that added Permian, Marcellus and Anadarko assets on top of the Delaware Basin, Eagle Ford, Williston and Powder River. A candidate who can say something intelligent about integrating two asset bases, and what that means for land records or data systems or reservoir teams, is talking about the company's actual 2027 problem. Fourth, be realistic about the cycle. Devon's most-cited Glassdoor con is layoffs, and a former intern lost their full-time path to a downturn. A candidate who acknowledges commodity cyclicality without being frightened of it reads as informed rather than naive. And for the Technology track specifically: build something small and end-to-end on two of the tools they named, Databricks, PySpark, Snowflake, Azure DevOps or Power BI. The requisition tells you which two to pick.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Devon Energy internship?
No. The summer 2026 class has already run. What is open right now is summer 2027: all six of Devon's Summer 2027 intern requisitions, Engineering, Geoscience, Technology, Land, Accounting and Energy Marketing, went live between August 20 and September 2, 2026 and were still open on September 6, 2026. Apply now rather than waiting, because none of them carries a published close date.
What is the Devon Energy internship application deadline?
There isn't a published one. Devon's applicant-tracking data returns no end date for any of the six Summer 2027 requisitions, and that is a verified absence rather than a missing detail. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis alongside Devon's fall 2026 campus recruiting, and roles are pulled when they are filled. Any deadline you see on a job board is that board's own expiry logic, not Devon's.
How much do Devon Energy interns get paid?
Devon does not publish a rate. The requisitions say only "competitive compensation." The most detailed public account is a June 2024 Glassdoor review by a current Devon technology intern in Oklahoma City, who reported that rising juniors in their cohort earned roughly $29 to $34 an hour, rising seniors $35 to $42, returning rising-senior engineering and technology interns around $41.50, and first-time non-technical interns around $29. That is one intern's report of one cohort in summer 2024, clearly labelled as such, not a Devon pay scale.
Does Devon Energy provide intern housing?
Yes, and it is employer-stated. The Engineering, Geoscience and Land requisitions all say interns get "access to the Well fitness facility, competitive compensation, and corporate housing", and the Accounting requisition adds "(summer intern only)." A current intern in June 2024 independently described the housing as nice apartments close to the tower. Devon's early-careers page also lists relocation support, which makes geography a much weaker constraint here than at most employers.
What GPA does Devon Energy require for internships?
A GPA of 3.0 or higher is stated as preferred in five of the six live requisitions. The Technology Summer Intern requisition does not state a GPA at all. Because the wording is "preferred" rather than required, a slightly lower GPA is not an automatic rejection, but the rest of the application has to do more work.
What year of school do I need to be in for a Devon internship?
It depends entirely on the track, and the differences are large. Geoscience is for master's students only. Engineering and Land are for sophomores and juniors. Accounting takes sophomores, juniors and seniors. Energy Marketing accepts freshmen, sophomores and juniors, making it the only Devon intern requisition open to first-years. The Technology requisition does not state a class year.
Where are Devon Energy internships located?
Oklahoma City is the centre of the program even though Devon's corporate headquarters is in Houston. Engineering, Geoscience, Technology and Land are posted for Oklahoma City with Houston as an additional location; Accounting and Energy Marketing are Oklahoma City only. No intern requisition is posted at a field or basin location, so the work is office-based, with the Engineering track collaborating with field staff rather than being stationed in the field.
Does a Devon Energy internship lead to a full-time job?
Devon does not publish a conversion rate, so nobody should quote you one. What is on the record: four of the six requisitions describe the program as a way of "exploring potential career opportunities at Devon", a 2024 intern reported that returning interns are paid the highest rate, and Devon's live board is full of the analyst-level roles a converted intern would step into. The honest counterpoint is that exploration and production is cyclical. A 2016 Devon intern reported losing a full-time path to an industry downturn and layoff round, and layoffs are among Devon's most-cited Glassdoor cons.
Devon's six Summer 2027 requisitions are open today, review is rolling, and there is no deadline to work back from. Spend the same fortnight building proof: a remote Externship turns "interested in energy" into a finished project your application can point at.
