Last updated: October 2026
Cargill's summer 2027 internships are open right now, and they went up early. On 3 October 2026 Cargill's own careers board listed 22 US requisitions: 18 summer 2027 internships and 4 engineering co-ops that start in January or May 2027. The first went up on 30 July, and the newest, an Ingredient Chemistry internship in Plymouth, Minnesota, posted on 30 September. None of them lists a deadline, and Cargill's university page says intern offers go out within one to two weeks of a first interview.
In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Engineering students have a nearer door as well, because the January 2027 co-ops are open now. Cargill is a family-owned food and agriculture company founded in 1865, with more than 155,000 employees in 70 countries (cargill.com), and every one of its US intern postings prints an hourly pay range.

What Is a Cargill Internship?
A Cargill internship is a paid, roughly 12-week summer placement at one of Cargill's US offices, plants, grain elevators or R&D sites, where you're handed a real project at the start and present it at the end. Cargill groups its North American early-career roles into six families: Business, Operations, Digital Technology & Data, Engineering, Sales, and Research, Food Science & Environmental Safety (program page).
Most seats aren't at headquarters. Operations Management interns work at grain elevators in towns like Salina, Kansas and Albion, Nebraska. Food Safety interns can land at any of 16 plants. Mining Engineer interns go underground at salt mines in Lansing, New York and Cleveland, Ohio. Interns and co-ops also join events for the whole US cohort and get paid time off for volunteering. Cargill is privately held, and Forbes data puts its revenue at $154 billion, the largest of any private US company (Visual Capitalist).

When Do Cargill Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Cargill posts its whole US summer wave in one burst, about 9 to 10 months before start. Last cycle the summer 2026 reqs went up between 15 and 26 August 2025; this cycle the same reqs posted 8 to 23 days earlier, starting 30 July 2026. Applications for summer 2027 have been open since then, and none of the 22 US reqs lists a closing date. Two of them, Operations Management (Food) and Food Safety, say they accept applications until the job is filled or 120 days from the posting date, but Cargill's two job boards show different posting dates for them, so treat that as a ceiling rather than a deadline. The next window, applications for summer 2028, is expected to open around late July to August 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 18 US internships and 4 engineering co-ops were live on 3 October. A new Ingredient Chemistry internship posted on 30 September, so Cargill is still adding roles. Apply this month rather than waiting for a deadline that isn't coming.
Rolling first-round interviews: virtual, 30 to 45 minutes, either live or recorded. Cargill says intern and co-op offers go out within one to two weeks of that first interview, so a track closes once its seats are taken.
January 2027 engineering co-ops start and run to August 2027. Summer seats that haven't filled stay on the board until they do.
May 2027 co-ops start and run to December 2027. Some summer internships begin in late May, the rest in June.
A 12-week paid internship with a project you present at the end, plus events with interns and co-ops across the US. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to open around late July to August 2027, while this class is still on site.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Cargill doesn't publish a deadline, and that's the reason to move now, not a reason to wait. Its university page says offers for internships and co-ops go out within one to two weeks of the first interview, so a track can fill long before the last applicant shows up.
Many tracks also have only one site or a short list of them. Supply Chain is Wichita only, Logistics is Amarillo only, and Risk Management is Wayzata only. Once that seat is taken, the req comes down. Check the graduation window in each req before you apply, too. Most say December 2027 to 2028 or 2029, and applying outside that window is the quickest way to get screened out.
Which Cargill Internship Programs Should You Target?
Cargill hires interns track by track. Each track is its own requisition with its own pay range, sites and graduation window, so read the req, not just the title.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trading, Sales & Business (Commodity Trading, Business Management Associate, Risk Management, Grain Origination, Food Sales) | Market analysis, contracts, pricing, customer accounts, a project presented at the end | 12 weeks | Analysis, negotiation, communication; $20.63 to $32.02/hr |
| Operations Management (Grain Handling; Food) | Running elevator and plant operations, reliability, shift coverage | 12 weeks | Leadership, safety, willingness to work any shift; $21.56 to $29.86/hr |
| Supply Chain & Logistics | Demand planning, inventory, scheduling, freight and transportation | 12 weeks | Wichita KS or Amarillo TX; $21.00 to $32.02/hr |
| Engineer Intern, Mining Engineer Intern & Engineering Co-ops | Plant and mine projects, reliability tools such as RCA and FMEA | 12 weeks, or 7 to 8 month co-op | Engineering degree, 2.7 GPA preferred; $25.70 to $35.50/hr |
| R&D and Food Safety (Food Innovation, Food Scientist, Ingredient Chemistry, Process Modeling, FSQR) | Food science, formulation, process modeling, plant quality | 12 weeks | Lab and research skills; $20.94 to $51.56/hr by track |
| Software Engineer Intern (Atlanta) | Cloud, big data platforms, application development | 12 weeks | CS major or minor, 3.0 GPA required; $29.10 to $33.60/hr |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Cargill's gates are written into every req, and two of them screen out more applicants than GPA does:
• Work authorization: 21 of the 22 US reqs require US work authorization that doesn't rest solely on a student visa or on a visa sponsored by a third-party employer. That rules out most students whose only status is a student visa.
• Relocation: all 22 ask candidates to be "geographically flexible and willing to relocate". Plant and elevator tracks list up to 16 possible sites.
• Degree and graduation date: bachelor's or master's students graduating inside the req's window, usually December 2027 to 2028 or 2029. Process Modeling takes M.S. and Ph.D. students only.
• Track extras: Grain Origination needs a valid driver's license and roughly half your time on the road; Mining tracks require working underground; Operations Management interns must be willing to work first, second and third shifts and weekends.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?
Only on two tracks. The Software Engineer internship requires at least a 3.0, and Process Modeling asks for 3.0 or above. Most business, R&D and food safety reqs list a 3.0 as preferred, and the engineering and mining tracks list a 2.7 as preferred. Several reqs, including Commodity Trading and Risk Management, don't mention GPA at all. A lower GPA with plant experience, a prior internship or strong project work is still worth an application on a preferred-GPA track.
What Skills Does Cargill Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Across the 22 live US reqs, Cargill asks for the same handful of traits before any technical skill. Every req wants candidates who'll relocate and who work well with people from different backgrounds, and 20 of 22 want "a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness in completing work with limited guidance". The technical layer depends on the track: supply and demand analysis for trading, demand planning and inventory for supply chain, reliability tools like RCM, FMEA and root cause analysis for engineering, and cloud and big data platforms for the Atlanta software internship.

What Is the Cargill Application and Interview Process Like?
Cargill publishes its university hiring steps on its own site, and the intern process is short:
1. Apply online. About 5 to 15 minutes per req: resume, contact details, education and experience. You get an immediate confirmation email.
2. Recruiter screen. If you meet the minimum requirements, your application goes to a recruiter for review.
3. First-round interview. Virtual, 30 to 45 minutes, on your experience, skills and why you'd be an asset to Cargill. It's either a live video call or a recorded interview of four to six questions with about four minutes per answer.
4. Offer. Cargill says it extends intern and co-op offers within one to two weeks after the first interview. The second-round Talent Days on its site apply to full-time hires.
5. Be ready with extras. Cargill suggests having an extra resume, an unofficial transcript and examples of college projects and presentations on hand.

What Students on Reddit Say
Cargill internships and co-ops come up on engineering, CS and commodities subreddits, mostly about offers and what the work is like.
A student weighing two offers in November 2025 listed Cargill's backend and cloud software internship at $33.60 an hour for 12 weeks with 4 PTO days and a possible return offer. That's the top of the range Cargill now publishes for the summer 2027 software req.
Chemical engineers who started at Cargill praise its safety culture, clearly defined roles and training for new engineers, though one warns the bureaucracy grows once you're settled. A commenter added that most friends who co-oped at Cargill accepted full-time offers.
Traders advising a student with a Cargill trading internship offer in late October 2024 said to pick Cargill only if you want ags or biofuels, and to expect a move to the rural areas where crops are grown. Choosing the commodity matters more than choosing trading or analytics.
How Do You Stand Out for a Cargill Internship?
Three moves you can make before your first interview.
First, apply to the site, not just the company. Each req lists its plants, elevators or offices. Naming the locations you'd accept, and why, shows you read the req and meant the relocation line.
Second, know your commodity or your plant. Cargill trades ags, biofuels and freight, and its plants range from beef and starch to salt. A trading applicant who can explain grain basis, or an engineering applicant who knows what a reliability engineer does on a production line, stands out from someone who only knows the brand.
Third, bring a project you can explain in four minutes. The recorded interview gives you about four minutes per answer, and Cargill asks for examples of college projects. Cargill doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate, but each intern track lines up with a 2027 associate program on the same board, and its reqs say strong interns may be invited back the following year.

Does Cargill sponsor international students for internships?
Generally no. 21 of the 22 US reqs require the right to work in the US that isn't based solely on a student visa or a visa sponsored by a third-party employer. Students whose only status is a student visa should read that line in each req before applying.
What is the Cargill internship interview process?
After an online application and recruiter screen, there's one virtual first round of 30 to 45 minutes. It's either a live video call or a recorded interview with four to six questions and about four minutes per answer. Cargill says offers follow within one to two weeks.
Does Cargill hire interns full time?
Cargill doesn't publish a conversion rate.
