CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield doesn't recruit interns once a year. Its College Relations Program runs year-round and hires in short waves: in 2026, summer interns were posted from late January to early March and fall interns in mid-July, and each posting stayed up only about two to three weeks. On October 5, 2026 its job board listed 92 jobs and none for students, so the next real window for summer 2027 is expected in late January to March 2027. In plain words: you apply in early 2027, you intern in summer 2027.

Most roles ask for a 3.25 GPA and junior or senior standing, and every role is titled for the Maryland, DC and Virginia region. CareFirst's 2026 intern postings listed a "$18,720 - $26,000" salary range with a note that it's an annual rate and that all interns are paid hourly.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, usually in about 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. With CareFirst's next window months away, the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship fits its project coordination and business roles, and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship builds the SQL and reporting skills its data analytics interns use. What Is a CareFirst Internship?

A CareFirst internship is a paid role in CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield's College Relations Program, where interns work on real projects with mentors and business owners who help set their project goals. The program is year-round: summer interns work up to 40 hours a week, spring and fall interns up to 20, and CareFirst says it prefers interns who stay on part-time after the summer. CareFirst is the shared business name of CareFirst of Maryland, Inc. and Group Hospitalization and Medical Services, Inc., independent Blue Cross Blue Shield licensees. Its company overview calls it the largest not-for-profit insurer in the Mid-Atlantic, serving 3.5 million members with 9,000 employees and contractors across Maryland, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia.

When Do CareFirst Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

CareFirst recruits in waves, not one fall push. Last cycle, Summer Recruitment roles were posted from January 27 to March 7, 2026, about three to four and a half months before a late May or June start, and the Fall Recruitment roles went up around July 11 to 22, 2026, for interns starting in the fall. A 2024 listing shows the same late-winter timing. So applications for summer 2027 are expected in late January to March 2027, and applications for fall 2027 around mid-July 2027. These dates come from job-board mirrors of CareFirst's postings, not from CareFirst itself.

Now · early October 2026YOU ARE HERE

Applications aren't open: CareFirst's fall 2026 wave closed in July, and none of the 92 jobs on its board on October 5 is for students. This is the time to build proof for the winter wave.

Use the gap: the Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship or the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship gives you a finished healthcare project to list before CareFirst's summer 2027 postings go up.

Late January to March 2027EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Applications for summer 2027 are expected to post, titled "{Function} Intern - Summer Recruitment" for MD, DC and VA. Last year each posting stayed up about two to three weeks, so apply the week a role appears.

Spring 2027 and mid-July 2027EXPECTED

Interviews and offers for summer 2027 in spring (CareFirst publishes no interview dates). Around mid-July 2027, the Fall 2027 Recruitment wave is expected for interns who start in the fall.

Summer 2027

The summer internship runs 10 to 12 weeks full-time, from late May or June to August 2027, and CareFirst may ask you to continue part-time into the fall.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

CareFirst's window is short. No CareFirst posting states a deadline, but job-board mirrors of its 2026 postings show how long each one stayed up: the Public Policy intern from January 27 to February 6, the Communications intern from February 12 to March 4, and the Project Management intern from February 25 to March 13. The fall wave moved just as fast, with the Data Analytics intern listed July 11 to 23. That's 10 to 20 days per role, so if you're not watching the board when your function posts, you can miss it entirely.

Which CareFirst Internship Programs Should You Target?

CareFirst runs one College Relations Program but posts each function as its own role. These are the functions it recruited for in 2026, grouped by wave.

WaveFunctions seen in 2026TimingKey skills
Summer RecruitmentPublic Policy, Communications, Strategic Communications, Project Management/Coordination, Actuarial, DEI (HR), Clinical Advisory ServicesPosted late Jan to early Mar; 10 to 12 weeks full-time from late May or JuneWriting, research, Microsoft Office, analysis

The Internships page explains the program. The Clinical Advisory Services intern sits inside the same corporate program; CareFirst has no separate nursing or pharmacy student track.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

CareFirst's Internships page and its 2026 postings set these requirements:

• Class year: "currently enrolled ... at the junior or senior level in either an undergraduate or graduate program"; one 2026 communications posting also took sophomores.

• GPA: 3.25 or above on the program page and most postings; a few functions listed 3.0 (Data Analytics) or 3.2 (Communications).

• Skills: strong analytical skills, excellent verbal and written communication, and strong working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

• Location: roles are titled for MD, DC and VA (some add DE), as hybrid or remote, so expect to live in the region.

• Availability: summer interns work up to 40 hours a week; CareFirst prefers interns who can continue part-time during the school year.

Is the 3.25 GPA a Hard Cutoff at CareFirst?

Mostly, yes. The Internships page lists 3.25 as a qualification, and several 2026 postings said "must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above." A few functions set the bar lower, at 3.0 or 3.2, so read the requirement on the posting for your function rather than assuming one number. Work authorization wasn't stated in the postings we read.

What Skills Does CareFirst Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

CareFirst's program page and postings start with the same three: communication, analytical skills and Microsoft Office. Beyond that, each function adds its own. Data analytics interns are asked for beginner SQL, R or Python and tools such as DBeaver, Snowflake or Power BI, plus dashboards and cost-of-care reporting. Policy and communications interns research health policy and write documents and presentations, and actuarial interns support Medicare work.

What Is the CareFirst Application and Interview Process Like?

CareFirst doesn't publish an intern interview process, so here's what its careers site and postings show:

1. Set an alert. Join the CareFirst Talent Network and create a job alert on the board; roles are titled "{Function} Intern - Summer Recruitment" or "Fall Recruitment."

2. Apply fast. Each 2026 posting stayed up about 10 to 20 days.

3. Check your status. Applications run through CareFirst's applicant portal, linked from the top of the careers site.

4. Watch career fairs. CareFirst says it posts internships with college career centers and attends career fairs, so your school's board may carry the same roles.

5. Ignore look-alike recruiters. CareFirst's careers site links a recruitment-fraud notice, and a December 2024 Reddit thread described fake CareFirst offers sent from a look-alike domain.

What CareFirst Interns Say on Indeed

Reddit has almost nothing on CareFirst internships, so these cards come from intern reviews on Indeed. Most are from 2017 and 2018, so read them as past experience.

A Baltimore intern described great management and a supportive environment, with a hands-on manager who didn't micromanage and plenty of chances to learn different skills.

Not every review is positive: one intern found the workday very slow and quiet, with little interaction with coworkers, while another said they had a hand in many projects beyond the internship itself.

How Do You Stand Out for a CareFirst Internship?

Three moves. First, be first in line. Postings stay up only two to three weeks, so set the alert now and have your resume ready by late January. Second, offer the year-round commitment. CareFirst says it prefers interns who work part-time in spring and fall and full-time in summer, so say plainly that you can continue after August if you can. Third, bring a project that turns data into a recommendation. CareFirst's own intern quote on its Internships page talks about learning to turn data into insights for a better member experience, and nearly every posting asks for analytical skills and clear writing. CareFirst publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 CareFirst internship?

No. The summer 2026 wave was posted January to March 2026, and the fall 2026 wave in July; no intern roles were open on October 5, 2026. The next window, for summer 2027 internships, is expected in late January to March 2027, so set a job alert now.

When does CareFirst post summer 2027 internships?

Expected late January to March 2027. In 2026, CareFirst's Summer Recruitment roles were posted between January 27 and March 7, and each stayed up about two to three weeks. CareFirst doesn't publish its dates, so treat this as a projection and watch the board from January.

Is CareFirst's internship only in the summer?

No. It's a year-round program. Summer interns work up to 40 hours a week, and spring and fall interns up to 20. CareFirst says it prefers internships that run part-time during the school year and full-time in summer, and it recruits a separate fall wave in July.

How much do CareFirst interns make?

CareFirst's 2026 intern postings listed "Salary Range: $18,720 - $26,000" and said the range is an annual rate and that all intern positions are paid hourly. CareFirst doesn't publish the hourly rate itself, so ask the recruiter what it works out to for your hours.

What GPA does CareFirst require for interns?

Usually 3.25 or above. The Internships page lists 3.25, and several 2026 postings said a cumulative 3.25 was required. A few functions set it lower, such as 3.0 for Data Analytics and 3.2 for Communications, so check the posting for your function before you apply.

Who can apply for a CareFirst internship?

Juniors and seniors in an undergraduate or graduate program, with some roles also open to sophomores. Postings are titled for Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia, as hybrid or remote roles, so plan to live in the region. Check the GPA line on each posting, too.

Does CareFirst offer remote internships?

Some. CareFirst titles each intern role as hybrid or remote within its MD, DC and VA region; in 2026, Clinical Advisory Services and Business Analytics were remote, while Public Policy was hybrid with office days. Remote roles still expect you to live in the service region.

Can a CareFirst internship lead to a full-time job?

It can. CareFirst says the program aims to provide "an opportunity for full-time hire upon graduation," and the year-round format gives interns months to show their work. CareFirst doesn't publish a conversion rate or class size, so treat a return offer as possible, not guaranteed.

CareFirst's summer 2027 postings are expected in late January to March 2027 and won't stay up long. Use the months before then to build a healthcare project you can point to: a remote Externship gives you finished work to list when the wave opens.
