BWX Technologies (BWXT) had 31 intern or co-op requisitions open on its own careers site on 26 October 2026, and 17 of them are labeled "Summer 2027." Where a pay rate is printed it runs from $19.57 to $32.24 an hour, and interns whose home of record is more than 50 miles from the site can get a housing stipend. Every posting we read requires U.S. citizenship, and many require the ability to obtain a Department of Energy (DOE) clearance. In plain words: you apply in fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

No posting shows a closing date, but requisitions come down without notice: a Summer 2027 Cyber Security intern posting that was listed in September has since closed. Apply early, and check the citizenship line before you invest time.

What Is a BWXT Internship?

A BWXT internship is a paid, on-site student role at BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT), a nuclear components and fuel company headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia. BWXT describes itself as providing "safe and effective nuclear solutions for national security, clean energy, environmental remediation, nuclear medicine and space exploration." Interns support engineering, IT, human resources, communications, supply management and environmental safety teams.

BWXT's student page says it "offers opportunities for students actively seeking internships and co-operative programs in various career fields, including engineering, finance and information technology." This guide covers the internship itself: the postings, pay, citizenship rule and timing. It doesn't describe any program work, because BWXT's postings don't either.

When Do BWXT Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

BWXT doesn't announce a recruiting calendar, so the timing here comes from archived copies of its student page. A capture on 2 September 2025 showed six Virginia Summer 2026 intern postings dated 19 August 2025. A capture on 15 August 2026 showed no Summer 2027 postings, and one on 16 September 2026 showed 13 of them, dated 3 to 14 September. That puts the wave about two weeks later than last year and roughly nine months before a typical June start, though BWXT doesn't print start dates. The dates on live postings move when BWXT reposts them, so treat the summer 2028 window as a low-confidence projection.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

BWXT's postings carry no closing date, but they do close. A Summer 2027 Cyber Security intern posting that appeared on a search-engine copy of the board in September now returns a page with no Apply button, marked not-for-indexing. The dates shown on live postings also move when BWXT reposts them: the Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineering intern posting showed September 3 in an archived copy and October 2 on the live board. So a date on a posting tells you nothing about how long it will stay open. Apply in the first week you see a posting you fit, and don't wait for a year-round role to "always" be there.

Which BWXT Internship Programs Should You Target?

Most postings are engineering, but IT, HR, communications and supply roles are open too. Pay is as printed on each posting.

All postings are on the student jobs page and the main board. The DOD SkillBridge Quality Intern posting is for transitioning service members and isn't a student internship.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The postings state the gates plainly:

• Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is stated in every posting we read. A few add "no dual citizenship." International students and non-citizens can't be considered.

• Clearance: 18 of the 30 student postings we read mention a DOE clearance, in the form "must be able to obtain and maintain" one. Selected applicants face a federal background investigation, a drug test and employment reference checks.

• Education: the Engineering Intern (Virginia) posting requires current enrollment in a bachelor's program in engineering; the Nuclear Criticality Safety posting accepts a B.S. or M.S. in engineering and prefers nuclear.

• Class year: Supply Management prefers a rising junior or senior; most other postings state none.

• GPA: a 3.0 or higher is a preferred qualification on three postings (Mechanical Engineering in Jonesborough, Environmental Safety in Erwin, Manufacturing Engineering in Mt. Vernon). The rest state none.

Do You Need a Clearance Before You Apply?

No. The postings ask that you be able to obtain and maintain one, not that you already hold it. Once selected, you go through a federal background investigation, which BWXT describes as including criminal and financial checks, a drug test and reference verification. Students who can't pass that process, or who aren't U.S. citizens, should skip the postings rather than apply.

BWXT's 31 postings are templated, so the skills lists are short. Engineering interns are described as developing and delivering engineering solutions, creating and updating drawings and procedures, and taking part in design testing, analysis, project management and procurement. What Is the BWXT Application and Interview Process Like?

BWXT doesn't publish interview stages, so here's what its postings and site confirm:

1. Check citizenship first. Every posting we read requires U.S. citizenship, and many require the ability to obtain a DOE clearance.

2. Apply from the posting. Each requisition has an "Apply now" button on careers.bwxt.com. Search the whole board for "intern", since year-round roles aren't on the Summer 2027 list.

3. Meet BWXT at events. The site menu links to career fairs, which are a second way in.

4. Interview. Rounds and format aren't published, and we found no first-hand intern interview report.

5. Selection and screening. Selected applicants face a federal background investigation, a drug test and employment verification, then a 10 to 12 week internship ending in a presentation to the leadership team.

How Do You Stand Out for a BWXT Internship?

Three moves, all doable this week.

Match the posting's duties. The engineering postings describe drawings, procedures, design testing, analysis and procurement. Bring a course project where you produced one of those, and explain your calculations.

Be ready for the presentation. Interns present their completed work to the leadership team at the end. Practice explaining a technical result to a non-specialist in a few minutes.

Show you can clear the screening. The postings tell you about the background investigation and drug test up front, so don't be surprised by them. BWXT doesn't publish class size or a return-offer rate, and you shouldn't quote one.
