Last updated: October 2026
On 3 October 2026, Black & Veatch had 53 summer intern postings live on its own careers board, from structural and electrical engineering to construction, consulting and supply chain. The first went up on 3 September. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. None of the postings has a deadline, but they come down one at a time and without warning: the Accounting Intern and Resilience Planning Intern postings from September are already gone.
Black & Veatch is a 100% employee-owned engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company founded in 1915 and based in Overland Park, Kansas. It works on power grids, water plants, data centers and telecom. In 2024 it hosted 235 interns from 79 colleges across 39 offices. Where a posting lists pay, the hourly band runs from $18.72 to $45.74 for engineering roles.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most often over 8 weeks. They sit alongside a Black & Veatch application, not in place of one: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship works on connected water systems, close to B&V's water and controls tracks, and the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship builds the schedule and progress tracking that project controls interns do. What Is a Black & Veatch Internship?
A Black & Veatch internship is a paid, full-time summer placement on a design team in one of its offices, or on a project site for field roles, where interns help produce engineering deliverables such as drawings, calculations and specifications under close supervision. Postings cover power delivery, water, data centers, battery storage, LNG and federal work.
The firm is 100% employee-owned through an ESOP it has run since 1999, and the requisitions say so in their benefits text. Interns get mentorship, in-house training and networking with senior engineers, per the postings. The program is separate from EDGE, Black & Veatch's rotation program for graduates.

When Do Black & Veatch Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Black & Veatch posts its summer engineering wave in September, about nine months before interns start. Last cycle, Wayback snapshots of the College board show the first summer 2026 postings on 28 August 2025, a peak of 237 listings on 16 September 2025, and only 71 left by 3 October 2025. This cycle started about ten days earlier, on 3 September 2026.
On 3 October 2026 the board carried 53 live intern postings. Twenty were re-dated that day, and several electrical and controls postings that showed the closed-posting page on 27 September are live again, so the board is still moving. A second, smaller wave for business and support roles (marketing, communications, finance, procurement, drafting) posted between 12 January and 12 February 2026 last cycle.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 53 postings across structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, controls, process, construction, consulting and supply chain. Two September postings (Accounting, Resilience Planning) have already closed. Apply first, then build something to talk about in the interview.
Postings for summer 2027 are expected to keep closing one by one, with a few reposts. Last cycle the board fell from 237 listings to 71 between 16 September and 3 October 2025, then picked up reposts from 27 November to 8 December. A Michigan student reported holding a B&V summer offer by 30 December 2025.
Business and support internships for summer 2027 (marketing, communications, finance, procurement, CAD drafting) are expected, based on the 12 January to 12 February 2026 postings last cycle. Non-engineers should watch the board then.
A few late postings (last cycle: 3 to 8 April 2026), then onboarding: every posting lists a background check, drug screen and motor vehicle records search before you start.
The internship itself, full-time, in an office or on a field project site; the start date isn't published. Applications for summer 2028 are expected to post in early September 2027 if the calendar holds.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Black & Veatch's postings carry no closing date, so the real deadline is the day your posting comes down, and you won't get a warning. Last cycle the College board lost about 70% of its listings in the 17 days after its mid-September peak. This cycle, the Accounting Intern posting was gone within about three weeks and the Resilience Planning Intern posting within five days.
The flip side: postings can also return. Several electrical and controls postings that showed the closed-posting page on 27 September were live again on 3 October with new dates. Don't wait for that. If a regional posting covers the office you want, apply now, and if it's gone, check back weekly.
Which Black & Veatch Internship Programs Should You Target?
Every intern posting sits under one summer program, labelled "College Intern" and full-time. These are the tracks live on 3 October 2026:
| Track | Focus | Live postings | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural engineering | Transmission lines, substations, power, water, federal (U.S. citizens only) | 10 | Design coursework, calculations, drawings |
| Civil engineering | Water and wastewater (six regions), geotechnical, site development | 8 | ABET civil enrollment, 3.0 GPA preferred |
| Electrical engineering | Substation, APG, battery storage, solar, data centers, water | 8 | Power systems coursework, specifications |
| Mechanical and process | Data centers, fire protection, LNG equipment, HVAC, drinking water, wastewater | 9 | Calculations, P&IDs, equipment specs |
| Instrument & controls | Battery storage, substations, APG, water | 5 | P&IDs, schedules, specifications |
| Construction, field and business | Construction, field safety, project controls, estimating, consulting, supply chain, technician | 13 | Daily reports, cost and progress tracking, RFQs |
Many postings are regional, with one requisition covering three to six offices, so read the "Potential Office Locations" list and name your preferred office. Search everything on the College board.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The postings set a few firm rules and a few preferences:
• Enrollment: current enrollment in the program the posting names, ABET-accredited for engineering roles (36 of 53 say so). "No experience required" appears on 37 of 53.
• GPA: a 3.0 is listed as preferred on 18 of 53 postings, mostly civil, controls and process roles. It isn't stated as a hard minimum.
• Work authorization: all 53 postings read "Visa Sponsorship Available: No".
• Citizenship: only the Structural Engineer Intern, Federal requires U.S. citizenship, for government clients.
• Onboarding: background check, drug screen and motor vehicle records search on every posting. Field roles add relocation to a project site and physical work.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?
No, as written. Every posting that mentions a 3.0 lists it under preferred qualifications, and the minimum qualifications are enrollment and the background checks. Most structural, mechanical, construction and supply chain postings don't mention GPA at all.
A GPA under 3.0 is still a filter when a posting draws a lot of applicants, so lead with design coursework and any project or field experience.
What Skills Does Black & Veatch Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
The postings ask for the same core: written and oral communication, problem solving, math and computer skills, plus current engineering enrollment. Engineering roles then add discipline work, such as engineering calculations, drawings and specifications, and for controls roles P&IDs.
Field and construction roles swap the design work for daily reports, cost and progress reporting, and physical site work. Almost no posting names software: AutoCAD, Revit and MicroStation each appear once.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
Black & Veatch's wave landed in the same September rush as its design-firm peers. Apply now rather than after midterms, when many of these postings will be gone.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Three of the posting lines can be practiced before you apply or interview:
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Water and controls systems | I&C interns help prepare "Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), engineering schedules and specifications" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Project controls and progress reporting | Field interns assist with "daily reports, material expediting/location, cost/progress reporting" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Cost analysis for consulting and supply chain roles | Postings list scope, schedule and budget exposure, quotation evaluation and purchase orders | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis |
None of these is an engineering design project. Each one trains a habit the postings ask for and ends with finished work you can walk an interviewer through.
What Is the Black & Veatch Application and Interview Process Like?
Black & Veatch doesn't publish an interview guide for interns. This is the path the postings and community reports describe:
1. Pick the regional posting. Find the track and region on the College board; a regional posting can list three to six offices, so say which one you want.
2. Apply while it's up. There's no deadline, and postings close individually.
3. Interviews in the fall. A University of Michigan sophomore on Reddit had finished interviews and held a structural transmission-line offer by 30 December 2025.
4. Offer and onboarding checks. Background check, drug screen and motor vehicle records search; a former intern says the drug test came before day one and state cannabis laws don't change the result.
5. Start in your office or field site. Field interns are assigned a project site closer to the start date and need reliable transportation.
Interview format isn't published, so prepare to explain your coursework, one design or field project, and why you picked that region.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit threads about Black & Veatch are few but specific: offers, screening and hours.
A Michigan civil sophomore finished fall interviews with a Black & Veatch structural transmission-line offer and a Tetra Tech offer, and said B&V paid more than $2,500 more for the summer.
A former intern says the drug test happened before the first day, and former staff add that state legalization doesn't matter because the firm does federal work.
Current employees say most weeks stay near 40 hours outside deadline crunches and that the local office culture matters most, while one former junior engineer recalls regular 50-hour weeks.
How Do You Stand Out for a Black & Veatch Internship?
Black & Veatch doesn't publish an applicant count or acceptance rate, so we won't guess at the odds. Three moves fit what the postings ask for:
1. Apply in the first weeks, to the right region. Postings come down without notice. Pick the regional requisition that lists the office you'd actually work in, and name that office in your application.
2. Match the degree line exactly. Each engineering posting names the disciplines it takes, for example electrical, mechanical or chemical for controls. Apply where your major is listed, and put your design courses near the top of your resume.
3. Show you understand the market segment. Postings are built around power delivery, water, data centers and battery storage. One sentence on why that segment interests you, backed by a class project, does more than a general line about infrastructure.
The conversion rate isn't published. The firm did post 22 Graduate Engineer roles on the same board in September 2026.

Does Black & Veatch drug test interns?
Yes. Every intern posting lists a criminal and civil background check, a drug screen and a motor vehicle records search as onboarding requirements. A former intern on Reddit says the test came before the first day, and former employees say cannabis remains disqualifying regardless of state law.
Black & Veatch's postings close without notice, so apply to your region now, then use the weeks before interviews to finish one project you can talk through: a remote Externship gives you that.
