Barclays Internship 2027–2028: Programs, Deadlines & How to Apply

Last updated: July 2026

Barclays earned Vault's #8 ranking for Best Investment Banking Internships in 2026 and 99% of its summer analysts recommend the program on Glassdoor. For the 2027–2028 cycle (you apply during 2027, you intern in summer 2028), US applications are expected to open as early as June or July 2027, roughly 12 months before the June start, with rolling review continuing through fall 2027 (UK programs typically open around September). But here is the catch: Barclays fills on a rolling basis, and by the time a stated deadline arrives, 60 to 80% of spots may already be gone. That compressed runway means timing matters as much as preparation.

What Is a Barclays Internship?

A Barclays internship is a paid, 10-week Summer Analyst placement that puts penultimate-year undergraduates on live deals from day one, with structured mentorship and direct exposure to M&A, capital markets, and client advisory work across 15 tracks. The program runs out of the bank's Americas headquarters at 745 Seventh Avenue in New York, and it draws from a distinctly collaborative culture rooted in Barclays' British heritage. With approximately $3.0 billion in FY24 investment banking fee revenue and active expansion of its US footprint, Barclays offers the deal flow of a bulge bracket alongside a measured, people-first environment that reviewers consistently call less cutthroat than American-headquartered peers.

When Do Barclays Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Barclays runs on a rolling calendar that rewards speed. Based on prior cycles, US Summer 2027 analyst postings were already live by June and July 2026, more than 12 months ahead of the internship, and the most competitive desks filled within weeks. For the summer 2028 cycle, US listings are expected as early as June to July 2027, continuing on a rolling basis through fall 2027, with UK programs typically opening around September. Superday invitations should flow from late summer 2027 onward, with offers rolling after that. The gap from application open to internship start can be a full 12 months, so the proof you bring to your application needs to be built before June 2027.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Barclays fills on a first-come basis, and the data confirms it. By the time a stated deadline arrives, 60 to 80% of spots may already be gone because applications are reviewed as they arrive rather than batch-processed. The most competitive desks (M&A, Capital Markets) close within 4 to 6 weeks of posting. And the rolling SHL assessment means your clock starts the moment you submit. Waiting for a deadline that technically still exists is a losing strategy when the seats are already claimed.

Which Barclays Internship Programs Should You Target?

Barclays posts 15 tracks across its Summer Analyst program, spanning investment banking, markets, research, technology, and corporate functions. Which one you target should match the skills you can already demonstrate, because each track interviews against its own job description and competency framework.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Barclays publishes consistent requirements across all Summer Analyst postings:

Year: penultimate-year undergraduate (rising senior who will graduate within one year of the internship's conclusion). Any major accepted.

GPA: "Ideally, you'll have a GPA of 3.2 or above." This is stated as preferred rather than a hard cutoff, but most successful candidates meet or exceed it.

Work authorization: must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Barclays will NOT sponsor work visas, and offers no assistance with OPT or CPT documentation.

Availability: full 10-week commitment, June through August, at the assigned location.

Does Barclays Have a Hard GPA Cutoff?

No. The language across all nine reviewed job descriptions reads "ideally" rather than "must have," and interest in business, extracurricular leadership, and resourcefulness are listed as equally important qualifiers. But because Barclays uses rolling review, a 3.2+ GPA combined with relevant project experience moves your application forward faster than a marginal GPA with no financial experience to offset it. The no-visa-sponsorship policy is the true hard gate: if you need employment sponsorship of any kind, this internship is effectively unavailable.

What Skills Does Barclays Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Nine real Barclays intern and analyst job descriptions tell a consistent story. Financial analysis appears in all nine. Financial modeling appears in eight. Valuation and Excel each show up in seven. But the soft-skill signal is just as clear: teamwork and collaboration score 100%, and resourcefulness plus analytical thinking each hit 89%. What does that pattern reveal? Barclays hires candidates who can build a model and also explain it to a client in plain language.

How Is Demand for Finance Interns Moving Right Now?

186 US finance-intern postings open this week, holding steady through early July (184 on July 6)
Data skills carry a premium: data-analyst intern postings advertise about $70,600 vs about $54,800 for general finance-intern roles
The bench you convert into is deep: 11,281 US financial-analyst postings are open right now at a $110k median advertised salary

July 2026 is this tracker's baseline month, so month-over-month shifts appear at the August update. The signal now is volume: finance-intern demand is broad, and the data-skilled end of it pays more.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Every top skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project before the window opens.

Skill (from real JDs)JD evidenceExternship that builds it
Financial modeling & valuationCoverage/M&A JD: "financial modeling," "valuation," "DCF, comps, precedent transactions"Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling
Financial analysis & ExcelCapital Markets JD: "financial analysis," "Excel," "accounting fundamentals"Attronica FP&A & Private Company Valuation
Written communication & client materials8 of 9 JDs: "written communication (memos, offering memoranda, reports)," "client presentation materials"Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling

How tight is the overlap? The Yinan Zhao deliverable is a full valuation model in the Coverage/M&A posting's exact vocabulary, and the Attronica project produces FP&A analysis that maps directly to the Capital Markets skill set. Both end on a client-ready presentation, which is the "client presentation materials" line item seven of nine JDs share.

What Is the Barclays Application and Interview Process Like?

Barclays runs a four-stage funnel, and the rolling timeline means each stage can start within days of the previous one:

1. Apply through search.jobs.barclays or the Workday portal with your resume, transcript, and short application questions. Barclays posts separate listings per track, so choose your strongest-fit division rather than scattering applications.

2. SHL cognitive assessments arrive within 1 to 2 weeks of submission. Two interactive tests covering numerical reasoning (~35 questions in 35 minutes), verbal reasoning, and inductive logical reasoning. Accessible on phone, tablet, or computer.

3. HireVue video interview follows 2 to 4 weeks after the assessment. Four to six pre-recorded questions with about 30 seconds prep time and 1 to 2 minutes to respond. Content is mostly behavioral: why investment banking, why Barclays, teamwork under pressure, and alignment with Barclays' values.

4. Superday at 745 Seventh Avenue, NYC. Four to five back-to-back interviews (~30 minutes each) from 9am to 2pm, with interviewers ranging from analysts to managing directors. Expect a technical round (DCF walkthrough, 3-statement linkages, valuation methodologies) and behavioral rounds scored against Barclays' Critical Skills framework.

Important: Barclays prohibits third-party AI tools, transcription bots, and meeting assistants during interviews. Violation results in interview termination and application withdrawal. Glassdoor data shows the average time from application to hire is about 17 days for IB Summer Analysts, so the process moves quickly once your file is picked up.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three community threads show what the process looks like from the inside.

Barclays culture doesn't have the cut-throat nature you see in American firms. Mentors actively teach and senior bankers understand the human element.

Applied and got the SHL within a week. The HireVue came two weeks later. Whole thing moved faster than I expected for a bulge bracket.

They're relatively more focused on growing US IB in terms of hiring and not firing. Good sign for the next cycle.

How Do You Stand Out When Rolling Review Starts in August?

Three moves, all executable before the window opens. First, apply in week one; rolling admissions plus first-come seating makes timing itself a filter, so set alerts on the Workday portal and Handshake now. Second, build evidence in the JD's exact language: financial analysis, modeling, and client-ready communication are the top three skill clusters, and a finished project in any of them answers behavioral questions with artifacts rather than anecdotes. Third, prepare for every stage before you submit, because the SHL arrives within days and the HireVue follows within weeks. There is no breathing room in a rolling funnel, so your prep needs to be front-loaded rather than reactive.

FAQ

Does Barclays sponsor work visas for summer interns?

No. Barclays explicitly states it will not sponsor applicants for work visas or provide any employment-based immigration sponsorship for internships, post-graduation programs, or permanent employment. This includes no assistance with OPT or CPT documentation. STEM degree holders with 24-month OPT eligibility may self-manage their authorization, but Barclays still does not sponsor.

What GPA do I need for a Barclays internship?

Barclays states "ideally, you'll have a GPA of 3.2 or above." This is framed as preferred rather than a hard cutoff. Strong extracurricular involvement, leadership, and demonstrated interest in finance can offset a slightly lower number, though most successful candidates meet or exceed 3.2.

When should I apply for the Summer 2028 Barclays internship?

Based on the prior cycle, US applications are expected to open as early as June to July 2027, about 12 months before the internship, with rolling review continuing through fall 2027; UK programs typically open around September. Because Barclays fills on a rolling basis, apply within the first 1 to 2 weeks of listings going live. Waiting until a stated deadline risks finding 60 to 80% of spots already taken.

Can I apply to multiple Barclays tracks at the same time?

Barclays posts separate listings for each division (Coverage/M&A, Capital Markets, Research, Markets, Technology, and others). You can technically apply to more than one, but it is generally advisable to focus on your strongest-fit track to avoid appearing unfocused during interviews.

What is the Barclays Superday like?

The Superday runs from approximately 9am to 2pm at 745 Seventh Avenue in New York. You face 4 to 5 back-to-back interviews, each about 30 minutes, with professionals from analyst to managing director level. Expect a technical round (DCF, valuation, accounting) and behavioral rounds assessed against Barclays' Critical Skills framework.

What is the return offer rate at Barclays?

Community estimates from Wall Street Oasis suggest 70 to 85% of summer analysts receive full-time offers. This varies by division, group performance, and market conditions. Barclays officially states that "top-performing, eligible Summer Analysts" are invited to join as full-time Banking Analysts.

Do I need to be a finance major to intern at Barclays?

No. Barclays accepts candidates pursuing an undergraduate degree in any discipline. They look for interest in business and finance, strong analytical skills, teamwork, and resourcefulness regardless of your major. Liberal arts, STEM, and other backgrounds are represented.

What makes Barclays different from other bulge bracket internships?

Three things stand out. First, the British heritage creates a collaborative culture (99% of summer analysts recommend the program). Second, Barclays is actively growing US IB, which suggests stable or expanding class sizes. Third, the Discovery Programme offers a sophomore pipeline into the Summer Analyst seat. The trade-off is a stricter no-visa-sponsorship policy and some reviewers noting more bureaucratic processes than US-headquartered peers.

The window is rolling and the most competitive desks fill within weeks. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship turns "interested in finance" into a finished project that a rolling application can point at.
