AXA XL's recruiting brochure says applications open in November. Its job board opened six summer 2027 internships in September. On October 5, 2026 the AXA careers site listed six US internships for AXA XL, posted between September 8 and 29, 2026: Underwriting, Claims, Operations, Actuarial and two Finance roles, across Exton, Hartford, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Scottsdale. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and at AXA XL the door is already open.
Each role is a 10-week paid internship that ends with a final presentation to senior leaders, at a published $25 an hour ($26 for actuarial). No posting states a deadline, so apply before the November rush the brochure points students to.
What Is an AXA XL Internship?
An AXA XL internship is a paid, 10-week summer program in the US at AXA XL, the property, casualty and specialty insurance and reinsurance division of France's AXA. Interns join a team in underwriting, claims, operations, actuarial or finance, work on a cross-functional project, and finish with a presentation to senior leaders. AXA XL was formed after AXA completed its purchase of Bermuda-based XL Group in September 2018, and its About Us page cites about 9,000 colleagues serving clients in more than 200 countries and territories. It isn't Equitable, the US life and retirement company once called AXA Equitable.

When Do AXA XL Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
AXA XL posted its summer 2027 internships between September 8 and 29, 2026, about nine months before the June start, and all six were still live on October 5. That's about two months earlier than the November opening its 2026 US early-careers brochure describes, so the board, not the brochure, sets the calendar. Interviews ran late last cycle: a candidate described a second-round interview for an AXA XL intern role in February 2026. Applications for summer 2028 are expected around September 2027, based on this cycle's dates.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: six US roles in underwriting, claims, operations, actuarial, financial reporting and finance data, posted September 8 to 29.
Apply in these weeks. No posting states a deadline, and students following the brochure will start applying in November, so applying in October puts you ahead of that wave.
Interviews. AXA XL doesn't publish its intern process; last cycle one candidate had a second-round intern interview in February 2026, and a reply said to expect behavioral questions.
The 10-week internship starts in your chosen office, with training, intern events and a cross-functional team project.
The internship ends in August with a final presentation to senior leadership. Summer 2028 applications are expected around September 2027; graduates can also look at AXA XL's Claims Development and Underwriting Graduate programs.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
AXA XL fills its internships on a rolling basis. None of the six postings gives a closing date, so a role can be filled before a later applicant is reviewed. Timing matters more than usual here because AXA XL's own brochure tells students that applications open in November: most students who read it will apply then, about two months after the roles went live. Applying in October means your application is reviewed before that wave arrives.
Which AXA XL Internship Programs Should You Target?
AXA XL's six US internships share one 10-week format and one final presentation; they differ by team, office and pay.
| Track | Focus | Offices | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underwriting | AXA XL's wholesale (E&S), retail insurance and reinsurance business | New York, Chicago, Hartford, Atlanta | Communication, curiosity, interest in insurance |
| Claims | Training on claims across lines, project work alongside claims professionals | Chicago, Exton, New York | Communication, problem solving, accountability |
| Operations | The systems and processes behind underwriting, and ways to run them better | Chicago, Atlanta, Scottsdale | Process thinking, collaboration |
| Actuarial | Pricing techniques, model testing, underwriting tools, dashboards, a large-account pricing case study | Exton, New York, Hartford (hybrid) | 3.0 GPA, math and research skills, Excel, programming |
| Finance: US Financial Reporting | IFRS reporting, P&L and balance sheet analysis, month-end close, dashboards | Exton, Hartford | Advanced Excel, Power BI, Oracle Hyperion |
| Finance & Business Performance Data | KPI reporting, budgeting and forecasting support for Americas finance leaders | Exton | Excel or Access, Power BI a plus |
Find all six on the AXA careers site; it lists every AXA business worldwide, so filter to AXA XL in the United States.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
AXA XL's requirements are light outside the actuarial track:
• Work authorization: every posting requires authorization to work in the country where the internship is located; none mentions sponsorship.
• Actuarial: at least two years completed toward a degree in actuarial science, math, statistics or a related STEM field, with a 3.0 GPA or higher; one or more actuarial exams is desired, not required.
• Finance & Business Performance Data: working toward a finance, accounting or economics degree, with advanced Excel or Access.
• Underwriting, Claims, Operations, Financial Reporting: no GPA or major listed; the postings ask for clear communication, leadership experience, curiosity, accountability and interest in insurance.
• Work model: the actuarial posting asks you to work hybrid at a listed office; AXA XL's stated goal is for staff to spend most of their time in person.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff at AXA XL?
Only for actuarial, where it's listed under required skills, so treat it as firm. The other five postings name no GPA at all and screen instead on communication, leadership experience and interest in insurance. For actuarial, an exam is listed as desired rather than required, so a 3.0 with no exam still qualifies on paper.

What Skills Does AXA XL Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Five of AXA XL's six postings share one template, so the core is the same everywhere: clear communication, curiosity, leadership experience and accountability, plus a team project presented to senior leaders. The tracks then add their own: actuarial wants math, research skills, Excel, programming and data visualization; financial reporting wants advanced Excel, PivotTables, Power BI and Hyperion; finance data wants Excel or Access and KPI reporting.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each AXA XL skill maps to a remote Externship that gives you a finished project to discuss while your application is in review.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Financial reporting and analysis | Financial Reporting: "analysis of Profit & Loss (P&L) and Balance Sheet results" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Pricing and modeling | Actuarial: "a hands-on large account pricing case study" | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| Judging a risk | Underwriting: AXA XL's wholesale and E&S business | Mangusta Capital Deal Sourcing & Startup Analysis |
| Presenting to senior leaders | All tracks: "a final presentation to Senior Leadership" | Corporate Strategy Externship mentored by Eric Ries |
The presentation match matters on every track: AXA XL ends each internship with one, so a project you've already presented is direct evidence for the line its postings share.
What Is the AXA XL Application and Interview Process Like?
AXA XL doesn't publish its intern interview steps. What the postings and candidate reports show:
1. Apply on the AXA careers site. Filter to AXA XL in the United States; each posting covers two to four offices, so choose your location deliberately.
2. Check the track's gate. Actuarial needs two years toward a STEM degree and a 3.0 GPA; every track needs US work authorization.
3. Recruiter screen. Full-time underwriting assistant candidates describe a first video interview with HR; one was offered an optional prep call before the next round.
4. Team interviews. Expect behavioral questions; one hire met several departments before HR, and an intern candidate had a second round in February 2026.
5. Offer. The internship starts in June; graduate programs in claims and underwriting follow for some.
For behavioral questions, our STAR method guide shows how to build the stories.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit has one AXA XL intern thread; the others come from full-time underwriting assistant candidates and show how AXA XL interviews.
A student with a second-round interview for an AXA XL risk management internship in February 2026 asked whether to expect a fit or technical round; the reply was that it would most likely be behavioral, especially for an internship.
A hire for an underwriting assistant role said they interviewed with several departments to find the best fit, then met HR and were hired, all within about a week. Another candidate later reported getting the job, and one said there was no drug test.
An underwriting assistant candidate had a video interview with HR, moved to an in-person round, and was offered an optional prep call with the recruiter beforehand; others said such calls are exactly what they sound like.
How Do You Stand Out for an AXA XL Internship?
Three moves. First, apply before November. The roles have been live since September, while AXA XL's brochure still points students to November. Second, prepare for the presentation, not just the interview. Every track ends with a presentation to senior leaders, so bring one example of presenting your own analysis to people senior to you. Third, know what makes AXA XL different. It's a commercial and specialty insurer that calls itself a top 10 carrier in the excess and surplus (E&S) market; being able to explain in two sentences what E&S covers and why it exists sets you apart from applicants who only know personal auto and home. AXA XL publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 AXA XL internship?
No. Summer 2026 has already run. The open door is summer 2027: on October 5, 2026 AXA XL had six US internships live, posted between September 8 and 29, in underwriting, claims, operations, actuarial and finance. None states a deadline, so apply this month rather than waiting for November.
Didn't AXA XL say applications open in November?
Its 2026 US early-careers brochure says so, but the job board is what counts. All six summer 2027 internships went live in September 2026 and were accepting applications on October 5. Applying in October puts you ahead of students who wait for the brochure's November date.
How much do AXA XL interns make?
The postings publish pay: $25 an hour for the Underwriting, Claims, Operations, US Financial Reporting and Finance & Business Performance Data internships, and $26 an hour for Actuarial. Actual pay depends on factors such as location and experience, according to the postings, and all six internships are paid.
How long is the AXA XL internship?
Ten weeks, from June to August. Interns work with a team, attend intern events and leader sessions, and complete a cross-functional project that ends with a final presentation to senior leadership. The format is the same across all six US tracks, though offices and daily work differ.
Where are AXA XL internships located?
It depends on the track. Underwriting covers New York, Chicago, Hartford and Atlanta; Claims covers Chicago, Exton and New York; Operations covers Chicago, Atlanta and Scottsdale; Actuarial is hybrid in Exton, New York or Hartford; the finance roles sit in Exton and Hartford.
What are the AXA XL actuarial internship requirements?
At least two years completed toward a degree in actuarial science, math, statistics or a related STEM field, a 3.0 GPA or higher, strong analytical and research skills, and willingness to work hybrid. One or more actuarial exams is desired but not required, and the role offers CAS exam support.
Is AXA XL the same as Equitable or AXA in the US?
No. AXA XL is AXA's commercial property, casualty and specialty insurance division, built from the 2018 purchase of XL Group. Equitable, once called AXA Equitable, is a separate US life and retirement company. AXA's careers site also lists other AXA businesses worldwide, so filter to AXA XL.
Does AXA XL have programs after graduation?
Yes. Its 2026 US brochure describes an 18-month Claims Development Program in Exton and Hartford and a 6-month Underwriting Graduate Program. AXA XL doesn't publish an intern conversion rate, but these programs give interns a clear next step to ask about during the summer.
AXA XL's six summer 2027 internships are open now with no stated deadline. Apply in October, and build proof in parallel: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to present, just as AXA XL's interns do at the end of the summer.
