Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) says all of its academic internships are paid, either by AIUSA or by another sponsor, and that interns who bring their own funding must receive at least $17 an hour. This page covers AIUSA, the US section; the International Secretariat in London and other national sections hire separately. Nothing is posted today. AIUSA's careers page lists only two volunteer roles, and its application system returned zero requisitions when we checked on October 16, 2026.

Terms run in spring, summer and fall, and AIUSA posts them one at a time. The plain-words version for summer 2027 is this: you apply when the summer term is posted, which no date predicts, and you intern in summer 2027. There is also a route that doesn't wait for a posting: if you have outside funding, you can email the talent acquisition team any time.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, which makes them a good use of the weeks while you wait for a posting. What Is an Amnesty International USA Internship?

An Amnesty International USA internship is a paid academic placement with the US section of Amnesty International, which describes itself as "the world's oldest and largest democratically governed grassroots human rights organization with more than a million members and activists in all 50 states." AIUSA says it has a "longstanding internship program" for students and recent graduates, and since 2018 all of its academic internships have been paid.

The careers page doesn't list departments or projects for internships. Fellowships are a different track, so this page keeps them apart: fellows work for a fixed term of one year or more on tasks such as legislative research, drafting memoranda and blogs, and tracking legislation in Congress.

When Do Amnesty International USA Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

AIUSA doesn't publish an internship calendar. The careers page says only that interns can start in spring, summer or fall and that postings are screened on a rolling basis and may come down early. We couldn't recover dated postings from earlier cycles, so we can't give an expected open date or a lead time for summer 2027, and this page won't guess one.

What you can do is check the board on a routine and keep an application ready. AIUSA's FAQ says it responds to emails within seven business days, so a short inquiry costs little.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HERE

No internship is posted. AIUSA's careers page shows two volunteer roles (Area Coordinator and Volunteer Legislative Coordinator), and the ADP board listed zero requisitions on October 16, 2026. Volunteer roles aren't internships.

Use the gap to build something you can describe in a cover letter. The Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Analytics Externship and the ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes Externship are both open now.
Before a posting appears

Prepare a PDF resume and PDF cover letter, since email submissions aren't accepted. Confirm you can work in the US without sponsorship. If you have a university stipend or foundation funding, email talentacquisition@aiusa.org with "Internship inquiry" in the subject, naming your term and funding source.

When a term is posted (date not published)ROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

AIUSA screens candidates on a rolling basis and may take down a posting early, so apply in the first days. Postings that carry a deadline don't accept late submissions.

After you apply

The listed process is a screening interview with Talent Acquisition, panel interviews, a final interview, reference checks and an offer. Most interviews are on Zoom, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted.

Summer 2027

Summer is one of AIUSA's three terms. Start and end dates, weekly hours and the stipend for AIUSA-funded roles appear in each posting, and none is published in advance.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

AIUSA's own wording is the evidence: "We encourage candidates to apply early, as we screen candidates on a rolling basis and may take down a posting early." That makes the first days after a posting appears the safest time to apply, and a posting can disappear before any listed date.

The page doesn't publish a deadline pattern, an applicant count or how long postings stay up, so we can't say how many days you have. Treat the first week as your window, and note that submissions after a stated deadline "will not be reviewed."

Which Amnesty International USA Internship Programs Should You Target?

AIUSA lists one internship program and keeps fellowships and volunteer roles separate. None has a published date for 2027.

Everything above comes from AIUSA's careers page. Its FAQ mentions a different application system by name, but the application link goes to ADP Workforce Now, which is the one to use.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

AIUSA's careers page sets few formal requirements for interns:

• Who: students and recent graduates.

• Work authorization: you must already be authorized to work in the US. AIUSA "does not assist" with sponsorship, financial help for visas or documentation, so international students who need that support can't be placed.

• Funding: all academic internships are paid. If you bring your own funding, the minimum pay is $17 an hour.

• Documents: a resume and a cover letter as PDFs, submitted online through the portal, and for some roles a writing sample.

• Not published: GPA, class year, minimum hours and weekly commitment, all of which each posting should state.

Is the GPA a Hard Cutoff?

AIUSA doesn't publish a GPA requirement, so there's no cutoff to cite. Each posting sets its own requirements, so read the one you want before you apply. The careers page says candidates whose qualifications "closely align with the requirements of the role" move forward, which means the match to the posting counts more than a number.

What Skills Does Amnesty International USA Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

AIUSA doesn't list internship skills on its careers page, and no internship posting was open to read. Skills here come from the fellowship description, which is a different track but sits on the same page: legislative research, drafting memoranda and blogs, managing databases, analyzing law and government policy, and tracking legislation in Congress.

Treat that list as a hint, not a requirement. It suggests three buckets: research and policy analysis, writing for advocacy audiences, and data and database handling. Read the posting when it appears, and match your cover letter to its wording.

Note: No frequency chart this time: AIUSA had no internship posting live on October 16, 2026, and a chart built from fellowship text or third-party summaries would misrepresent what its internships ask for. We will add one when a posting appears.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each skill maps to a remote Externship you can finish while you wait for a posting. None of these is affiliated with AIUSA.

A finished project gives your cover letter something concrete to describe, which matters when AIUSA says it advances candidates whose qualifications closely match the role.

What Is the Amnesty International USA Application and Interview Process Like?

The steps below come from AIUSA's hiring process list and FAQ.

1. Find a posting in the ADP portal linked from the careers page, or email talentacquisition@aiusa.org if you have funding.

2. Apply online with a PDF resume and PDF cover letter. Complete every field and sign the last page, or the application is marked incomplete.

3. Screening interview with the Talent Acquisition team, which only shortlisted candidates get.

4. Panel interviews, mostly on Zoom, then a final interview.

5. Reference checks and an offer.

6. Email talentacquisition@aiusa.org if you hit a technical problem, and expect a reply within seven business days.

You can't edit an application after you submit it, so assemble your documents first.

What the Community Says

We found no first-hand account of an AIUSA internship on Reddit; the threads that mention Amnesty are general career advice, so this page doesn't quote them.

How Do You Stand Out for an Amnesty International USA Internship?

AIUSA doesn't publish applicant counts, cohort sizes or an acceptance rate, so this page can't say how selective its internships are. It says only that it receives a high volume of applications and advances candidates whose qualifications closely align with the role.

First, apply fast. Postings can come down early, so keep your PDFs ready.

Second, tailor the cover letter to the posting's own wording, since the match to the role is what AIUSA says it screens for.

Third, if you have a university stipend or foundation funding, use the self-funded email route with your term and funding source in the first lines. AIUSA promises a reply within seven business days.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Amnesty International USA internship?

No. Summer 2026 has ended, and AIUSA had no internship posted on October 16, 2026. Its careers page lists only two volunteer roles. The next step is to watch its application board for a summer 2027 posting, or email talent acquisition if you have outside funding.

When do Amnesty International USA summer 2027 internship applications open?

AIUSA hasn't published a date, and we couldn't find dated postings from earlier cycles, so no honest estimate exists. It posts spring, summer and fall terms one at a time and screens on a rolling basis. Check its application board regularly and apply as soon as a summer posting appears.

Are Amnesty International USA internships paid?

Yes. AIUSA says all of its academic internships have been paid since 2018, either directly by AIUSA or by another sponsor. Interns who bring their own funding must be paid at least $17 an hour. AIUSA-funded amounts aren't published, so check each posting for the rate.

Where do I apply for an Amnesty International USA internship?

Through AIUSA's ADP Workforce Now portal, linked from amnestyusa.org/careers. Submit a PDF resume and cover letter, because email applications aren't accepted. If you have your own funding, email talentacquisition@aiusa.org with "Internship inquiry" in the subject line and say which term you want.

Can international students apply for an Amnesty International USA internship?

Only if they already have US work authorization. AIUSA says it doesn't assist with visas, sponsorship or documentation, and candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without AIUSA's intervention. Students who need that support will want to look at organizations that do sponsor.

Is Amnesty International USA the same as the International Secretariat?

No. Amnesty International USA is the US section and runs its own hiring through amnestyusa.org. The International Secretariat in London and the other national sections hire separately, each with its own careers page, and this guide covers only AIUSA, so check the right site for the office you want.

What is the difference between an internship and a fellowship at AIUSA?

Internships are academic placements for students and recent graduates in spring, summer or fall terms. Fellowships are fixed terms of one year or more, hired throughout the year pending funding, for work such as legislative research and drafting memoranda. The careers page lists them as separate tracks.

Can I get an internship if I have my own funding?

Possibly. AIUSA asks you to email talentacquisition@aiusa.org with a resume, a cover letter describing the experience you want, the term, and your funding source. All interns must be paid $17 an hour, and the People and Culture team decides whether it can place you. Expect a reply within seven business days.

No AIUSA term is posted yet, so use the wait to build proof: a remote Externship gives your cover letter a finished project to point to when a posting appears.
