Last updated: October 2026
American National's summer 2027 internships opened in September and are live now. On October 5, 2026 its Dayforce job board listed 13 intern roles: five in actuarial, three in cybersecurity, and one each in statutory accounting, finance internal controls, investment accounting, compliance and human risk management, split between Houston and League City, Texas. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
Interns work on site, paid hourly for 37.5 hours a week, from Monday, May 24 to Friday, August 6, 2027, with an optional extension to August 13. The bar is published on every posting: junior standing or higher by the start of the internship and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. May 2027 graduates are welcome too, which is unusual for a summer program.
What Is an American National Internship?
An American National internship is a paid, on-site summer role at American National Insurance Company, an annuity, pension risk transfer and life insurer founded in 1905 and headquartered in Houston, with other offices in League City, Springfield, Missouri and Glenmont, New York. Interns do project work for one team, and the program page pairs each intern with a manager mentor and a peer mentor, plus "Leadership Lens" sessions with executives, business-exposure sessions and community work. Brookfield bought American National in 2022, and its sister insurer American Equity now sits under the same holding company but recruits separately in Des Moines. This corporate program is different from the agent-intern offers some local American National agencies have advertised.

When Do American National Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
American National posted its 13 summer 2027 roles between September 8 and 15, 2026 for a May 24, 2027 start, so applications open about 8.3 to 8.5 months before the internship. Its own internship page, in versions from September 2025 and January 2026, said "Applications for internships open in August/September," and that if no internships are listed, applications aren't being accepted. The 2027 program also starts about two weeks earlier than the early-June start that page described. American National runs one summer cohort, so summer 2028 applications are expected in August to September 2027.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 13 roles in actuarial (5), cybersecurity (3), statutory accounting, finance internal controls, investment accounting, compliance and human risk management.
Rolling review and interviews. American National doesn't publish its interview steps or a decision date, and roles come down from the board as they fill.
Most roles are likely filled by now. American National's own page says that when no internships are listed, it isn't accepting applications.
If you missed this wave, build skills and a project for next year: applications for summer 2028 are expected in August to September 2027, the window American National states on its internship page.
The internship runs Monday, May 24 to Friday, August 6, 2027, with an optional extension to August 13, on site in Houston or League City at 37.5 hours a week, paid hourly.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
American National hires on a rolling basis. None of its 13 postings names a deadline, and the job system has no expiry date set on any of them. Its own internship page puts the risk plainly: if you don't see any open internships, it isn't accepting applications. So a role that fills in November simply disappears, with no published cutoff to warn you. The postings went up in the second week of September, and the page says applications open in August or September each year. Apply in the first weeks, while every role is still listed.
Which American National Internship Programs Should You Target?
Each role is a separate posting on American National's Dayforce board. The 13 live on October 5, 2026, grouped by area:
| Area | Roles | Location | Key tools and skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Actuarial (5) | Actuarial Intern (2); Annuity & PRT Valuation; Annuity Earnings Analysis; Pension Risk Transfer Pricing | Houston or League City; PRT Pricing in Houston | Excel, VBA, SQL, R, Python; AXIS; one SOA exam on 3 of 5 |
| Cybersecurity (3) | Blue Team / Cybersecurity; Security Operations; Threat and Vulnerability Management | League City data center; TVM also Houston | Microsoft Sentinel and Defender, SIEM concepts, Tenable, Azure or AWS basics |
| Accounting and finance (3) | Accounting (Statutory Reporting); Finance Internal Controls; Investment Accounting | League City; Investment Accounting in Houston | Excel, SAP, Workiva; SOX testing; BlackLine, Clearwater |
| Compliance | Internship - Compliance | League City | Microsoft 365, compliance tools |
| Human Risk Management | Human Risk Management Intern (security awareness) | Houston | Articulate, Canva, PowerPoint, Power BI |
Search "intern" on the American National careers board; the internship program page describes mentoring and sessions.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Every 2027 posting lists the same "Minimum Eligibility Requirements":
• Enrollment: enrolled at an accredited college or university.
• Class year: junior standing or higher by the start of the internship; May 2027 graduates are welcome.
• GPA: a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
• Schedule and location: available 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday, and able to work on site at the posted location in Houston or League City.
• Exams: three of the five actuarial roles require at least one passed Society of Actuaries exam.
• Work authorization: none of the 13 postings mentions visa sponsorship, so confirm with the recruiter if you need it.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff at American National?
Treat it as one. It's listed under "Minimum Eligibility Requirements" on all 13 postings, next to junior standing and on-site availability, so expect screening below that line. The flexible part is timing: May 2027 graduates are explicitly welcome, so a senior finishing this spring can still apply for the summer after graduation.

What Is the American National Application and Interview Process Like?
American National doesn't publish its interview steps, so this is what the program page and postings show:
1. Apply on Dayforce. Search "intern" on the careers board and apply to each role separately.
2. Check the published gates. Junior standing by May 2027, a 3.0 GPA, on-site availability and, for three actuarial roles, one passed SOA exam.
3. Interviews. The format isn't published, and we found no first-hand intern interview account. Prepare behavioral stories plus the tools your posting names.
4. Offer. Offers go out on a rolling basis; roles come down from the board as they fill.
Our behavioral interview guide shows how to build STAR stories for the interview.
What Interns Say on Indeed and Reddit
Reddit has little on the internship itself, so two cards come from intern reviews on Indeed and one from a local Reddit thread.
An intern in Albany, New York said the internship was worth it: it paid better than friends' internships and involved real work rather than coffee runs.
An intern in Galveston praised upper management for helping interns understand what to do and called it a good start in the field.
A thread quoting local news said American National moved its last roughly 150 downtown Galveston employees to its League City and Houston offices. A former employee remembered a business casual, fairly quiet office where most colleagues lived in League City.
How Do You Stand Out for an American National Internship?
Three moves. First, clear the published gates and apply in October. Junior standing, a 3.0 GPA and on-site availability are listed as minimums, and roles come down as they fill. Second, name the tools in your posting. Actuarial applicants should show Excel, VBA and one of SQL, R or Python, plus a passed SOA exam for three of the five roles; cybersecurity applicants should talk about SIEM concepts, Microsoft Sentinel or Defender and cloud basics; accounting applicants SAP or Workiva. Third, use the mentoring. Every intern gets a manager mentor and a peer mentor, so say what you want to learn. American National publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 American National internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over. Summer 2027 is the open cycle: on October 5, 2026 American National had 13 intern roles live in Houston and League City for May 24 to August 6, 2027. None states a deadline, but roles come down as they fill, so apply while they're listed.
When do American National internship applications open?
In August or September. American National's own internship page says so, and its summer 2027 roles were posted between September 8 and 15, 2026, about eight months before the May 24 start. Expect summer 2028 applications in August to September 2027, and check the board early in that window.
What GPA do you need for an American National internship?
A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. It's listed under the minimum eligibility requirements on all 13 summer 2027 postings, alongside junior standing by the start of the internship and the ability to work on site 37.5 hours a week. Treat it as a hard screen rather than a preference.
Can graduating seniors apply for an American National internship?
Yes. Every 2027 posting asks for junior standing or higher by the start of the internship and says May 2027 graduates are welcome. That's unusual for a summer internship, where many programs require you to return to school afterward. Juniors finishing in 2028 are also eligible, as long as they meet the 3.0 GPA.
Are American National internships paid?
Yes. The postings say intern positions are paid hourly with a full-time schedule of Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours a week, but American National doesn't publish the hourly rate. One intern review on Indeed from 2024 said the pay beat friends' internships. Ask the recruiter for the rate before accepting.
Do American National actuarial interns need exams?
For most roles, yes. Three of the five actuarial internships require at least one passed Society of Actuaries exam. The actuarial postings also name Excel, VBA, SQL, R and Python, and the Pension Risk Transfer Pricing role lists AI tools such as Copilot. Applicants without an exam should target the other two roles.
Is an American National agent intern role the same program?
No. Some local agencies have advertised agent or agency intern roles under the American National name, which are commission-based insurance sales recruiting. The corporate Summer Internship Program is posted only on American National's Dayforce board, paid hourly at 37.5 hours a week, in Houston and League City offices.
Is American National the same company as American Equity?
No, though they're related. Brookfield owns both, and they now share a holding company, but they keep separate brands, careers boards and internship programs. American National hires interns in Houston and League City with a 3.0 GPA minimum; American Equity runs its own program in Des Moines.
American National's 13 summer 2027 roles are open now and come down as they fill. Apply this month, and build a project you can point to in interviews: a remote Externship gives you one in about 8 weeks.
