Most internship pages talk vaguely about "relocation support." The American Bureau of Shipping writes the actual package into its careers page: "Shared housing is provided for students living more than 50 miles from our headquarters," "Round-trip airfare is covered by ABS," and "A rental car will be provided for the duration of the internship." The organization offering that is 164 years old and does not exist to make money. ABS was founded in 1862 as the American Shipmasters' Association and has been a not-for-profit throughout. It is a classification society: the body that writes and enforces the technical rules for how ships and offshore structures are designed, built and maintained. ABS classes more than 12,000 commercial vessels and offshore facilities, employs more than 5,500 people across roughly 200 locations, and performs statutory services on behalf of more than 100 governments. Vault ranks the program #29 among Best Internships for Engineering and #66 for Compensation & Benefits in its 2026 rankings. The Summer 2027 Engineering Intern requisition went live on September 1, 2026.

What Is an American Bureau of Shipping Internship?

An American Bureau of Shipping internship is a 3-month, paid summer placement at the organization's global headquarters in Spring, Texas. ABS is a not-for-profit classification society that writes and enforces the technical rules for marine vessels and offshore structures. Interns "are integrated into ABS business operations and will experience various aspects of engineering review, technical problem solving, and/or research and development," working with a designated advisor. ABS offers two internship tracks (Survey and Engineering, and Digital) and a post-graduation Aspire Rotational Program that feeds directly from the internship. The company classes more than 12,000 commercial vessels and offshore facilities, employs over 5,500 people across more than 200 locations in 70 countries, and has been named one of U.S. News' Best Companies to Work For 2025-2026.

When Do American Bureau of Shipping Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

ABS posted the Summer 2027 Engineering Intern requisition on September 1, 2026, nine months before the June start. There is no published deadline, but Vault intern reviews say decisions come "in the fall semester before the upcoming summer," so the practical window is September through December 2026. ABS runs a single virtual interview and moves quickly. The Aspire new-graduate rotational program (req 4787) was posted one day later, on September 2, targeting students graduating in December 2026 or May 2027, and explicitly prefers candidates with internship experience.

Applications reviewed, single virtual interview conducted, offers extended. Vault intern reviews describe results landing in the fall semester. The requisition has no closing date, but once filled, it closes without notice.

May 2027

Summer 2027 internship begins. 3-month on-site assignment at ABS global headquarters in Spring, Texas.

August 2027

Internship ends. Aspire rotational program begins for graduates (12-month rotation across Engineering, Survey and Technology, ending in a permanent Engineer I or Surveyor I placement).

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

ABS publishes no deadline, which means there is no date to plan around and no safety net if you wait. Vault intern reviews say "the results were out in the fall semester before the upcoming summer," which means the decision window is happening right now. A no-deadline requisition that decides in the fall rewards early applicants and quietly punishes late ones. The internship is one location, one requisition and one interview. If you clear the three hard gates (US citizenship, driver's license, 2.75 GPA), you are already through a filter that removes a large share of applicants at a nationally ranked engineering program. An application submitted in September is competing for a slot; one submitted in March 2027 is very likely competing for nothing.

Which American Bureau of Shipping Internship Programs Should You Target?

ABS runs two internship tracks and a post-graduation rotational program that feeds directly from the internship:

ProgramFocusDurationKey details
Survey & Engineering InternshipEngineering review, plan compliance, technical problem solving, R&D, data quality and dashboards3 months (May–August)Paid; housing + airfare + rental car for non-local interns; Spring TX HQ
Digital InternshipData science, computer engineering, cybersecurity, information systems3 months (summer)Paid; same support package. No live requisition as of Sep 2026
Aspire Rotational Program12-month rotation across Engineering, Survey and Technology (4 months each), ending in permanent Engineer I or Surveyor I placement12 monthsFor Dec 2026 / May 2027 graduates; full-time; US-based rotations; "internship or co-op experience preferred"

See live openings on the ABS Oracle careers board. The Aspire requisition (4787) is posted alongside the internship and explicitly names internship experience as preferred.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

ABS is unusually explicit about its gates. The Summer 2027 Engineering Intern requisition states every requirement in plain language:

Citizenship: "U.S. Citizen status" required for the internship. Note: this is stricter than work authorization. The Aspire program uses a broader standard: "Authorization to work in the United States or permanent resident status."

GPA: "Cumulative GPA of 2.75." A rare, published, hard number. Vault independently confirms the band at 2.50-2.99 / 3.00-3.49.

Major: Civil, Mechanical, Ocean, Marine, Electrical or Naval Architecture. The Digital track adds Data Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Computer Information Systems.

Enrollment: full-time student currently enrolled in an accredited university, pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree.

Driver's license: "Valid US Driver's License required." The HQ is in suburban Spring, Texas with no transit access. ABS provides the car; you must be able to drive it.

Software: "Proficiency in Excel and AutoCAD is preferred."

A 2.75 GPA Floor at a Vault-Ranked Engineering Program?

Yes. ABS states the number directly, and it is genuinely unusual. Most ranked engineering internships in this series gate at 3.0 or higher. If your GPA is between 2.75 and 3.2 and you have been screened out of peer programs, this is one of your best engineering targets. The formal bar is low; what matters more is showing you understand what a classification society does: verifying that designs are safe enough to go to sea. Read one section of the ABS Rules (published free on eagle.org) and be ready to say what struck you about it.

What Skills Does American Bureau of Shipping Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

ABS names exactly two software tools in its intern requisition: Excel and AutoCAD. The Aspire rotational program adds Python. Nothing in any ABS intern or early-career requisition names SQL, MATLAB, Aspen, SAP or any other standard engineering software. What the requisitions do name, repeatedly, is plan review against standards, technical writing, data quality and business performance metrics. The message is clear: ABS hires for engineering judgment applied to safety standards, not for simulation proficiency. A candidate who has actually read a section of the ABS Rules for Building and Classing Marine Vessels (published free on eagle.org) will stand out more than one who lists five software packages.

Note: Automated skill-frequency analysis could not be run (hiring.cafe returned HTTP 403). Only 2 ABS requisitions (1 intern + 1 Aspire) were available, too few for a meaningful frequency chart.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

ABS runs one virtual interview. That means one conversation carries all the weight, and a finished project is the clearest thing to talk about.

ABS runs a single virtual interview and asks for a 2.75 GPA. The formal bar is low; the interview carries all the weight. A completed Externship gives you a real, finished project to discuss in that one conversation.

What Is the American Bureau of Shipping Application and Interview Process Like?

The ABS hiring process is short and clearly documented by student reviewers:

1. Go to the ABS Oracle careers board at hbbq.fa.us2.oraclecloud.com and search for the Summer 2027 Engineering Intern requisition (ID 4767). It is one requisition for the whole program at Spring, Texas.

2. Submit online. Vault's How To Apply section: "Submit your application online. If the applicant meets the program's criteria, they will be called for a virtual interview."

3. One virtual interview. Vault reports "The hiring process entails one virtual interview only," and student reviewers describe it as "quick," "clear and concise," and "extremely easy." Prepare three tight stories: a plan or design you checked against a standard, a piece of technical writing, and a time you found a data-quality problem.

4. Expect a fall decision. "The hiring process was very smooth, and the results were out in the fall semester before the upcoming summer."

5. If graduating Dec 2026 or May 2027, apply to Aspire too (req 4787). Different program, different requisition, overlapping majors, and it explicitly prefers candidates with internship or co-op experience.

The single conversation carries all the weight. Read one section of the ABS Rules for Building and Classing Marine Vessels (published free at eagle.org) before your interview. Being able to say "I read the section on hull girder strength and here is what struck me" demonstrates you understand what a classification society does. Our HireVue question guide with a free AI mock tool covers behavioral interview preparation.

What the Community Says

Reddit has no first-hand account of interning at ABS, but maritime and engineering professionals consistently name ABS as the entry point for students interested in the industry. The cards below draw on dated, role-labelled Indeed intern reviews where employer identity is confirmed.

Former interns describe an unusually supportive program. One Houston intern (April 2019) says ABS was "very supportive of their internship program, which included housing," and that several interns came back for multiple years.

The work is described as meaningful rather than clerical. A 2016 offshore intern wrote that "the work related with safety checking is really meaningful" and that colleagues were "really friendly and willing to share life experience and ideas with interns and new employees."

How Do You Stand Out at a Classification Society?

Three moves, all executable before the fall interview window. First, check the three hard gates: US citizenship, a valid driver's license and a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Two of those are binary. If you clear them, you are already through a filter that removes a large share of applicants at a nationally ranked engineering program. Second, read one section of the ABS Rules for Building and Classing Marine Vessels, published free on eagle.org. Being able to say "I read the section on hull girder strength and here is what struck me" demonstrates you understand that ABS's product is the standard, not a ship. Almost no student applicant does this. Third, speak to the data side. The requisition asks engineering interns to assist with business performance metrics and data-quality work and to "collaborate with digital teams." Engineering candidates who can also handle data are covering two tracks with one application.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 American Bureau of Shipping internship?

No. The summer 2026 class has already started. The Summer 2027 Engineering Intern requisition (req 4767) went live on September 1, 2026 and is open now. There is no published deadline, but decisions come in the fall semester, so apply in September or October 2026.

What GPA do I need for an ABS internship?

2.75 cumulative. ABS states the number directly in its requisition. That is unusually low for a Vault-ranked engineering internship and a genuine differentiator for students between 2.75 and 3.0 who are screened out of peer programs.

Can international students apply to the ABS internship?

The Summer 2027 engineering internship requisition states U.S. Citizen status as a requirement, which is stricter than work authorization and excludes international students. The Aspire new-graduate rotational program uses a different and broader standard: authorization to work in the United States or permanent resident status.

Does ABS provide housing for interns?

Yes. Shared housing for students living more than 50 miles from headquarters, round-trip airfare covered by ABS, and a rental car provided for the duration of the internship. Both the careers page and the requisition confirm it.

How much does the ABS internship pay?

ABS does not publish an hourly or monthly rate, and Indeed has no estimate for this employer either. What ABS does publish is the non-cash package: housing, airfare and a rental car. Vault ranks it number 66 for Compensation and Benefits among all internships.

What is the interview like?

One virtual interview, and that is it. Vault reports the process entails one virtual interview only, and student reviews describe it as quick, clear and concise. The single conversation carries all the weight.

What is the Aspire program?

Aspire is the new-graduate rotational program, not an internship. It is a 12-month rotation with four months each in Engineering, Survey and Technology, all within the United States, ending in a permanent placement as Engineer I or Surveyor I. It prefers candidates with internship or co-op experience.

Why do I need a driver's license?

Because the requisition requires one and because the headquarters sits in a car-dependent Houston suburb. ABS provides the rental car; you must be able to drive it. This is the single most avoidable disqualification on the page.

ABS's Summer 2027 internship is live, the 2.75 GPA floor is one of the lowest in ranked engineering programs, and housing plus airfare are covered. Build the data and dashboard skills the requisition asks for with a remote Externship before the fall interview window closes.
