Leverage digital strategy, and consumer behavior to revolutionize The Home Depot’s shopping experience.

Overview

In this externship program, students will learn strategic consulting skills to analyze and evaluate challenges from non-profit organizations using consulting frameworks, in an overall effort to help them solve their important problems. Selected individuals will be paired with a specific non-profit organization and dive into their strategic problems, such as development, impact assessment, process improvements, talent engagement, communication, and strategic positioning. Throughout this externship program, professionals from PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) will provide mentorship and coaching.

The Experience

  • Learn about the strategy consulting process and how to help create value for a non-profit client based on their vision and mission
  • Research and develop an understanding of a given field
  • Analyze complex problems ranging from fundraising and development, stakeholder management, impact measurement, as well as use consulting frameworks to help identify problem areas and propose solutions
  • Learn to gather, analyze, and visualize data to inform problem areas and possible solutions
  • Create and deliver a compelling presentation to a non-profit client that incorporates valuable insights, trends, and recommendations

Qualifications

  • Ambitious undergraduate students with an interest in consulting, strategy, and non-profits. This program is for students who would like to understand the consulting profession while generating ideas to help impact non-profit organizations.

As consumer demographics evolve, The Home Depot is seeking fresh perspectives to reach and resonate with younger GenZ audiences. As a leading global home improvement retailer, The Home Depot invites you to be part of this strategy by joining an externship with our Brand Advocate and Category Experience team (BACE). This team operates at the intersection of merchandising, marketing, and analytics, aiming to craft a compelling and user-friendly online shopping experience. Through this externship, you'll delve into the nuances of online retailing, digital strategy, and consumer behavior, thereby enhancing your business acumen in a real-world setting.

The Experience

In this externship, you'll participate in a comprehensive exploration of market trends, customer preferences, and the behaviors of Gen Z audiences. You will compare best practices in the online retail sector, evaluate the effectiveness of existing strategies, and provide recommendations for enhancing The Home Depot's online décor shopping experience.

During this Externship, you will:

  • Familiarize yourself with the mission and objectives of The Home Depot, the BACE team, and Home Décor at Home Depot.
  • Learn about terms and concepts in online retailing, the home décor sector, and the shifting trends among younger generations.
  • Conduct primary and secondary market research to gain insights into the preferences and behaviors of the Gen Z customer segments.
  • Develop a customer profile to better understand the nature and buying behaviors of these targeted segments.
  • Carry out comparative analysis with other home décor retailers to discover best practices in engaging Gen Z customers.
  • Analyze the digital strategies of other retailers in comparison to The Home Depot's current online strategies, identifying potential gaps and opportunities.
  • Create and deliver a comprehensive presentation detailing your findings and recommendations for evolving HDH's online environment to appeal to the Gen Z segments more effectively.


Qualifications

We're seeking motivated sophomores, juniors, and seniors currently enrolled in accredited HBCUs. The strongest applicants will have demonstrated interest in digital marketing, online retail, business strategy, and consumer behavior.

Students studying business, marketing, communications, digital media, and other related majors are an excellent fit for this program, but it's open to all majors.

Part-time and fully remote

This Externship is a 10-hour-per-week fully remote experience where all meetings and events are recorded.

Externship starts September 25, 2023

This remote Externship will last 8 weeks.

$750 Stipend

Students who successfully complete their externships will receive their educational stipends at the end of the program

Required Academic Standing

This Externship is open to undergraduate Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors only.

Geographical Eligibility

This Externship is open only to applicants attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
