This is some text inside of a div block.
Product Management
Work with The Home Depot's Technology Team to investigate a real customer pain point, build a working AI prototype, and deliver a consulting-style recommendation.

Overview

In this externship program, students will learn strategic consulting skills to analyze and evaluate challenges from non-profit organizations using consulting frameworks, in an overall effort to help them solve their important problems. Selected individuals will be paired with a specific non-profit organization and dive into their strategic problems, such as development, impact assessment, process improvements, talent engagement, communication, and strategic positioning. Throughout this externship program, professionals from PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) will provide mentorship and coaching.

The Experience

  • Learn about the strategy consulting process and how to help create value for a non-profit client based on their vision and mission
  • Research and develop an understanding of a given field
  • Analyze complex problems ranging from fundraising and development, stakeholder management, impact measurement, as well as use consulting frameworks to help identify problem areas and propose solutions
  • Learn to gather, analyze, and visualize data to inform problem areas and possible solutions
  • Create and deliver a compelling presentation to a non-profit client that incorporates valuable insights, trends, and recommendations

Qualifications

  • Ambitious undergraduate students with an interest in consulting, strategy, and non-profits. This program is for students who would like to understand the consulting profession while generating ideas to help impact non-profit organizations.

Program Overview

In this remote 8-week experience, you will work alongside The Home Depot's Technology Team to learn how The Home Depot serves its professional contractors (Pros) and why coordinating a complex project across departments is one of the biggest drivers of lost time on a Pro's visit to the store. You will conduct field research — observing Pros and interviewing a small sample — to identify a friction point worth solving. You will then ideate two solutions to that problem: one that does not require agentic AI, and one that genuinely does. You will build both to different levels of fidelity — including a working agentic prototype using public LLM APIs, with prompt design, tool/function calling, an agent loop, and an evaluation set — and deliver a consulting-style recommendation to The Home Depot's leadership team.

Who Should Apply

Students with a basic computer science background and familiarity with at least one programming language such as Python, Java, or C++ are ideal candidates for this externship program. You do not need to be a Computer Science major to participate. Students from any field who have built something with code and want hands-on experience with applied AI engineering are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Deliver

  • A "Problem Worth Solving" one-pager grounded in Pro interviews and in-store observation
  • Two lightweight PRDs — one non-agentic solution and one agentic solution — with the judgment defended
  • A working agentic AI prototype with a chat interface, mocked tools, an agent loop, and an evaluation set
  • An architecture write-up and clickable wireframes for both solutions
  • A final consulting-style presentation with a live demo and recommendations for The Home Depot's leadership team

Skills You'll Gain

  • Customer research through Pro interviews and in-store contextual observation
  • Technical product management fundamentals — problem framing, PRDs, working with engineers
  • Judgment about when agentic AI is the right solution shape (vs. a form, workflow, or rules-based system)
  • Agentic AI prototyping — prompt design, tool and function calling, agent loops, and evaluation using public LLM APIs
  • System architecture thinking at the box-and-arrow level
  • Wireframing and flow-level experience design
  • Executive communication and consulting-style presentation

Why This Externship?

  • Work directly with The Home Depot's Technology Team on a real customer problem
  • Build a hands-on prototype using the same public LLM APIs production teams use today
  • Develop the engineering judgment to decide when multi-agent decomposition earns its coordination cost
  • Produce a portfolio-ready prototype reviewed by Extern program managers and The Home Depot team
  • Gain exposure to one of the largest home improvement brands in the world
