Program Overview

In this remote 8-week experience, you will work alongside The Home Depot's Technology Group to learn how THD serves its professional contractors and why coordinating a complex project across departments can be one of the biggest drivers of lost time. You will build a multi-agent system using public LLM and APIs that simulates agent-to-agent negotiation to produce a single, optimized project plan.

Working with real project inputs, you will prototype a coordinator AI agent that communicates with specialized agents, handling challenges such as inventory constraints and delivery window tradeoffs the way a production system would.

Who Should Apply

This externship is a strong fit for students with a basic computer science background and familiarity with at least one programming language such as Python, Java, or C++. You do not need to be a CS major. Students from any field who have built something with code and want hands-on experience with applied AI engineering are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Deliver

  • A short brief on the fragmentation problem and where agent coordination creates the most value
  • A Project Coordinator Agent that extracts structured requirements from a raw blueprint or materials list
  • A functional multi-agent prototype
  • A final presentation with a live demo and productionization recommendations for The Home Depot’s leadership team

Skills You'll Gain

  • Multi-agent system design using public LLM APIs
  • Agent-to-agent communication and shared state management
  • Structured extraction and schema design
  • Simulation of real-world logistics and inventory constraints
  • Executive communication and consulting-style slide development

Why This Externship?

  • Work directly with The Home Depot's Technology Group on a real customer problem
  • Build a hands-on prototype using the same public LLM APIs production teams use today
  • Develop the engineering judgment to decide when multi-agent decomposition earns its coordination cost
  • Produce a portfolio-ready prototype reviewed by Extern program managers and The Home Depot team
  • Gain exposure to one of the largest home improvement brands in the world
