Whatnot pays its summer 2027 software engineering interns $65 an hour, per its own posting, and the role has been live since 31 August 2026 with no closing date, so applications are being reviewed as they arrive. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Whatnot is the livestream shopping marketplace that raised a $545 million Series G at a $20 billion valuation in August 2026. One warning for non-engineers: Whatnot's summer 2026 Data Science Intern posting was up for only about 10 days in February 2026, and no summer 2027 version is posted yet.

What Is a Whatnot Internship?

A Whatnot internship is a paid, 12–16 week hybrid placement on a cross-functional product team at Whatnot, the livestream shopping marketplace founded in 2019 where people buy and sell collectibles, trading cards and more in real time. The summer 2027 software role names three kinds of projects: building features for live streams, growth work on buyer and seller flows, and systems that keep the marketplace trustworthy at scale. Whatnot says live sales on its platform passed $8 billion in 2025. Interns are expected to use the app as both a buyer and a seller, and Whatnot pays a monthly allowance to make that happen.

When Do Whatnot Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Whatnot runs two calendars, and one just moved. The summer 2027 Software Engineer Intern role was published on 31 August 2026, about nine months before a summer start. Last cycle the summer 2026 version didn't appear until March 2026 and came down in May, a lead of only two to three months, so the software window opened about six months earlier this year. The data science track was shorter still: its summer 2026 posting went up on 13 February 2026 and was removed on 23 February. Because Whatnot's timing just shifted, treat the data science date below as a low-confidence estimate and check the board weekly.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

The software role is rolling: Whatnot's posting has no application deadline and no close date, and review is already well under way. A candidate on r/csMajors described finishing the Hireflix video screen and receiving a Karat invite on 8 September 2026, eight days after the role went live. Rolling review means seats get filled from the earliest strong applicants, so a December application competes for what's left. Data science is the opposite risk: last cycle's posting lasted about 10 days, so anyone who checks monthly can miss it entirely.

Which Whatnot Internship Programs Should You Target?

Only one Whatnot intern track is on its board today. Here's what's open and what ran last cycle.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The requirements come straight from the summer 2027 Software Engineer Intern posting:

• Degree: pursuing a degree in computer science or a related major.

• Graduation window: graduating in December 2027 or by summer 2028.

• Experience: "some industry software engineering experience", such as a prior internship or shipped work.

• Location: you must live within commuting distance of the New York City or San Francisco hub during the internship. A LinkedIn copy lists Seattle; Whatnot's own posting doesn't.

• GPA and sponsorship: neither is mentioned in the posting.

How Much Industry Experience Do You Need?

Whatnot doesn't quantify it. The posting says "some" industry experience, which in practice means one prior internship, a substantial freelance or startup project, or a co-op term. If you don't have one, a finished project for a real company you can talk through in detail is the closest substitute, and it doubles as the project you'll discuss in the first 15 minutes of the Karat interview.

Could You Get In at Whatnot? Compare Your Profile

Based on 403 software engineering interns who started their first software internship between 2024 and 2026 (public LinkedIn profiles, aggregated). Six questions, under a minute.

Question 1 of 6

Which summer are you applying for?

Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.

Question 2 of 6

Which group is your school closest to?

Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.

Question 3 of 6

Is your major computer science, software engineering, data science or electrical engineering?

Almost every software intern in our data studied one of these. Other majors get in, but the coursework has to show elsewhere.

Question 4 of 6

How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?

Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.

Question 5 of 6

Has any of that experience been tech-related?

Software, data, IT, engineering or a research lab. Any size of company counts.

Question 6 of 6

Do you have at least one project on your resume or LinkedIn?

Personal, class, hackathon or open-source projects all count.

What Skills Does Whatnot Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Whatnot's postings are light on named tools and heavy on how you work. Three themes repeat. Cross-functional building: interns join mixed teams of engineering, product and design rather than a separate intern project. Product sense: every posting expects you to use Whatnot as a buyer and a seller. Learning fast: the posting asks you to pick up new technologies quickly, and a 2022 intern worked across web, Android, backend and iOS code in one term. The data science track adds SQL with Python or R.

What Is the Whatnot Application and Interview Process Like?

Whatnot's careers page describes a resume review, an initial phone or video screen and a hiring-manager round. For the software internship, candidates describe these steps:

1. Apply on Ashby. Submit through the Software Engineer Intern (Summer 2027) posting.

2. Hireflix video screen. A recorded set of behavioral questions you answer on your own time.

3. Karat technical. About an hour with a Karat engineer: roughly 15 minutes on a project you pick, then about 45 minutes of LeetCode-style coding, usually two problems.

4. Final round. In the 2022 cycle, two back-to-back 45-minute technical interviews plus a values ("principles") interview.

5. Offer. Timing varies; one 2022 candidate waited more than a month after the final round.

Prepare one project you know end to end and LeetCode easy and medium problems, and read Whatnot's engineering blog before the values round.

What Students on Reddit Say

Whatnot's intern process gets steady discussion on r/csMajors, including from the current cycle.

Applicants for the summer 2027 role said the recorded Hireflix screen led to a Karat invite within days. One who took the Karat round got two LeetCode-style problems, finished one and a half, and wasn't advanced.

A real engineer from Karat runs the hour: it opens with a discussion of a project you choose, then moves to coding, with a simpler first problem and a harder second one that some candidates don't finish.

The final round paired two back-to-back 45-minute technicals with a principles interview. The candidate heard nothing for more than a month, then got an offer.

How Do You Stand Out for a Whatnot Internship?

Three moves. Use the product before you interview. Buy something on a live stream and, if you can, list something to sell; Whatnot expects every employee to do both, and having opinions about the buyer and seller flows sets you apart. Lead with shipped work. The posting asks for industry experience, so put your strongest internship or real-user project first and be ready to explain your design choices in the Karat opener. Apply early. The role is rolling and review started in September. Whatnot doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate; the one documented case is a 2022 intern who got a new-grad return offer during the internship.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Whatnot internship?

No. The summer 2026 software and data science postings closed in spring 2026, and that summer is over. What's open now is the Software Engineer Intern role for summer 2027, live since 31 August 2026 with no deadline. A summer 2027 data science role is expected around February 2027.

Is the Whatnot summer 2027 internship open?

Yes, for software engineering. The Software Engineer Intern (Summer 2027) role went live on 31 August 2026 and lists no closing date, so applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Candidates were already receiving Hireflix and Karat invites in early September, so applying soon matters more than waiting.

How much does a Whatnot intern make?

Whatnot's summer 2027 software engineering intern posting lists $65 per hour. It adds a housing and relocation stipend, a monthly allowance to use the app as a buyer and seller, and a monthly phone and internet allowance. The summer 2026 data science intern posting also listed $65 per hour.

Where are Whatnot internships located?

In San Francisco or New York, on a hybrid schedule. The posting says you must live within commuting distance of one of those two hubs during the internship. A LinkedIn copy of the role lists Seattle, but Whatnot's own posting names only San Francisco and New York.

Who is eligible for a Whatnot internship?

Students pursuing computer science or a related major who graduate in December 2027 or by summer 2028 and have some industry software engineering experience, such as a prior internship. The posting doesn't mention a GPA minimum or visa sponsorship, so ask the recruiter if either affects you.

What is the Whatnot intern interview process?

Candidates describe a recorded Hireflix video screen, then a one-hour Karat technical with about 15 minutes on a project you pick and 45 minutes of LeetCode-style coding. The 2022 final round added two back-to-back technicals and a values interview, and the offer took over a month.

Does Whatnot hire data science interns?

It did for summer 2026, at $65 an hour in New York, but that posting was live for only about 10 days in February 2026. No summer 2027 version is up yet. Last year's pattern points to February 2027, but Whatnot posted its software role six months earlier this year, so check weekly.

Do Whatnot interns get return offers?

Whatnot doesn't publish a conversion rate. Its engineering blog documents a 2022 intern who received a new-grad return offer during the internship, and a full-time Software Engineer, 2027 New Grad role is open now at $155,000 to $160,000 plus equity for students graduating this year.

Whatnot's software role is open and rolling. Apply now, and if your resume is thin on industry work, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to talk through in the Karat round.
