Thales says it has 5,000+ employees at 41 sites in 18 US states, and its US internships sit on two separate job boards with two different calendars. On 3 October 2026 the open one was Thales Defense & Security, Inc. (TDSI) in Clarksburg, Maryland, with four engineering intern roles for an 8-week summer 2027 internship paying $34 to $37 an hour, U.S. citizens only. The rest of Thales' US businesses (avionics in Irvine, cybersecurity in Austin, sites in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania) had zero intern roles on their Workday board; last year theirs appeared between late February and early May. In plain words: you apply now (TDSI) or in spring 2027 (other Thales US units), and you intern in summer 2027.

Thales' open roles want RF, FPGA and data skills plus proof you can document technical work. Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship puts you on connected-device security, close to TDSI's secure communications work, and the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship builds the Python automation habits the DF/RF and FPGA reqs ask for. What Is a Thales Internship?
A Thales internship in the US is a paid placement at one of the French group's American businesses, and right now that means Thales Defense & Security, Inc. (TDSI). TDSI is headquartered in Clarksburg, Maryland, has "over 1,000 employees", and builds tactical radios, satellite terminals, helmet-mounted displays, radars and undersea sensors through four subsidiaries, including Digital Receiver Technology (per its req text). Its interns work "directly with a mentor" on "technical assignments with a basic degree of complexity" and attend seminars and facility tours with other students. Thales' other US units (avionics, cybersecurity, software) hire interns too, but through a separate Workday board that posts in spring. One naming trap: Thales' former rail-signalling unit is now Hitachi Rail, so rail internships aren't Thales roles.

When Do Thales Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Thales runs two US calendars. TDSI posted its four summer 2027 engineering reqs on 7, 8 and 9 September 2026, about nine months before an 8-week summer 2027 internship. Thales' Workday units work later: last cycle their US intern reqs were first listed between 28 February and 7 May 2026, one to four months before summer, so applications for summer 2027 at those units are expected around February to May 2027. We probed seven of those closed summer 2026 reqs on Workday's machine endpoint: all returned "exists but closed", and the board's 63 US reqs on 3 October 2026 included no interns.
TDSI's four summer 2027 engineering roles are open right now in Clarksburg and Germantown, MD, rolling with no closing date. Thales' other US units have no intern roles posted. If you're a U.S. citizen in EE, CE or CS, apply to TDSI this month.
TDSI reviews applications on a rolling basis. Everyone else: tighten your RF, FPGA or software projects, set an alert on the Thales Workday board, and line up a professor reference.
Applications for summer 2027 at Thales' Workday units (Irvine, Austin, Plantation, Cincinnati, Pennsylvania) expected to open, based on last cycle's 28 Feb - 7 May 2026 listings. Apply in the first week a role appears.
Interviews and offers for the later-posting units; TDSI hires may face a government security investigation, so expect onboarding paperwork to take time.
TDSI's 8-week internship in Maryland plus summer roles at other Thales US sites. Thales doesn't publish a return-offer rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
TDSI's reqs are rolling: no closing date appears in any of the four bodies, so a seat can be filled before the posting comes down. Each req is a single department with one intern opening, and the four went up within three days of each other in early September, which means hiring managers are reviewing now. For the Workday units the case is about timing rather than volume: last year's US intern reqs appeared one at a time between late February and early May, each one only a few months before its start date. Checking the board weekly from February is the only way to see them while they're open.
Which Thales Internship Programs Should You Target?
These are the four TDSI roles live on 3 October 2026, plus the Workday units' last-cycle roles so you know what to watch for in spring.

Apply to TDSI at careers.thalesdsi.com (contact careers@thalesdsi.com). All other Thales US roles post on the Thales Workday board.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
TDSI's four reqs carry the same core requirements:
• Citizenship: "U.S. Citizenship required" on all four. Selected applicants "may be subject to a government security investigation" for access to classified information.
• Enrollment: enrolled at an accredited college with at least 2 semesters completed in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science (the FPGA req says any engineering field).
• GPA: none stated on any TDSI req.
• Language: fluent English; Microsoft Office proficiency on three of the four.
• Other Thales US units: requirements not retrievable, because their closed reqs return "permission denied" on Workday.

Can International Students Apply to Thales in the US?
Not to TDSI. Every live TDSI intern req requires U.S. citizenship, which is stricter than the "U.S. person" rule many defense contractors use, so green-card holders are also out for these four roles. Thales' Workday units haven't published their summer 2027 requirements yet, so check each req when it posts in spring rather than assuming the TDSI rule applies to them.
What Skills Does Thales Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
TDSI's reqs read like an EE lab notebook. The RF role names electromagnetics, basic analog electronics and RF simulation tools (Microwave Office, ADS, Genesys); the DF/RF role asks for MATLAB and Python; the FPGA role wants VHDL or Verilog, C++ and Python. Across all four, the duty that repeats is gathering and analyzing engineering data, then documenting and communicating results to the team.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
Most engineering employers opened summer 2027 in September, so an EE student who waits for Thales' spring wave alone will be competing for whatever's left elsewhere.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
None of these externships is a Thales program, but each one builds a skill the TDSI reqs name and gives you a finished project to discuss.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Python scripting & automation | DF/RF and FPGA reqs list Python | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship |
| Secure communications hardware | TDSI builds tactical radios and secure comms; selected interns may undergo a security investigation | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship |
| Organizing and analyzing engineering data | "Gather and analyze data or information in support of engineering research" (RF req) | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture Externship |
Put the finished deliverable on your resume with the tools you used, so a TDSI mentor can see the overlap with their req at a glance.
What Is the Thales Application and Interview Process Like?
Thales doesn't publish a structured intern process. Here's what the reqs and one first-hand account show:
1. Pick the right board. TDSI roles are only on careers.thalesdsi.com; every other Thales US unit uses Workday.
2. Apply to the department req. Each TDSI role belongs to one department (RF, DF/RF, Digital EE, FPGA), so tailor your resume to that one.
3. Technical interview with engineers. A Georgia Tech applicant described a first-round engineering interview for a summer internship in 2025.
4. Possible second round. The same applicant had a second round scheduled and then cancelled, so stay flexible and follow up politely.
5. Offer and security paperwork. TDSI hires may be subject to a government security investigation before starting.
Bring a short walkthrough of one RF, FPGA or embedded project you built, with the measurements you took and what you'd change.
What Students on Reddit Say
Community discussion of Thales' US internships is thin and dated, so read these as single data points.
A Georgia Tech engineering applicant said their first-round interview was rescheduled twice, the second round was booked and then cancelled, and a rejection email followed. A reply from someone who had worked alongside Thales interns agreed the process felt disorganized.
Students on Florida's Space Coast list Thales among the local defense and tech employers worth trying for cybersecurity and networking internships.
How Do You Stand Out for a Thales Internship?
Three moves. First, apply to the department, not the company: TDSI's RF req wants electromagnetics and simulation tools, the FPGA req wants VHDL or Verilog, so lead your resume with the matching coursework and one project per req. Second, show measured results. The reqs ask you to gather data and "document and communicate results", so describe what you tested, with which instrument, and what the numbers showed. Third, be ready for the clearance side. TDSI says selected applicants may undergo a security investigation, and having your addresses, travel history and references organized makes that faster. Thales doesn't publish an applicant count or a return-offer rate, so don't rely on anyone's claimed odds.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Thales internship?
No. Summer 2026 has ended and those reqs are closed; Thales' Workday shows them as existing but no longer posted. What's open now is summer 2027: four TDSI engineering roles in Maryland, live since 7-9 September 2026. Thales' other US units are expected to post summer 2027 roles around February to May 2027.
When do Thales summer 2027 internship applications open?
It depends on the unit. Thales Defense & Security in Maryland opened four summer 2027 roles on 7-9 September 2026 and they're open now. Thales' other US units, such as avionics in Irvine and cybersecurity in Austin, posted last year's interns from late February to early May, so expect theirs around then.
Is there a deadline for Thales internships?
No closing date is posted on any of TDSI's four reqs, so they're rolling and can close once a mentor picks a candidate. Apply soon rather than waiting. For Thales' Workday units, no summer 2027 roles exist yet, so there's no deadline to track until they post in spring 2027.
How much do Thales interns make?
TDSI's summer 2027 intern reqs each state an hourly range of $34.00 to $37.00. Pay for interns at Thales' other US units isn't published in anything we could retrieve, because last cycle's reqs are closed. Neither unit mentions housing or relocation support for interns in its postings.
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to intern at Thales?
Yes for TDSI. All four live reqs say "U.S. Citizenship required", and selected applicants may be subject to a government security investigation for classified access. Requirements for Thales' other US units weren't retrievable, so read each Workday req when it posts in spring before assuming the same rule.
How long is a Thales internship?
TDSI's summer 2027 internship runs 8 weeks, according to every live req. None of the reqs states a start month, so ask the recruiter if your school calendar is tight. Length for Thales' other US units isn't published in any posting we could read, since those reqs are currently closed.
Where are Thales internships in the US?
Right now, Clarksburg and Germantown, Maryland, at TDSI and its Digital Receiver Technology subsidiary. Last cycle Thales also hired interns in Irvine, California; Austin, Texas; Plantation, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Pennsylvania, and those sites are expected to post again in spring 2027 on the Workday board.
What skills do Thales intern roles ask for?
TDSI's reqs ask for at least two semesters of EE, CE or CS, plus role-specific tools: electromagnetics and RF simulation software for RF, MATLAB and Python for DF/RF, and VHDL, Verilog, C++ and Python for FPGA. All four involve gathering, analyzing and documenting engineering data with a mentor.
TDSI's summer 2027 roles are open now and rolling, and the rest of Thales posts in spring. A remote Externship at 5 to 10 hours a week gives you a finished project to show either one.
