Last updated: October 2026
One Symetra internship for summer 2027 is open right now, and the rest are still to come. On October 5, 2026 the Symetra job board had exactly one intern posting live: the 2027 Actuarial Internship Program, remote, at $27 to $30 an hour, posted September 2. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.
Symetra, the Bellevue, Washington life insurer and retirement company, runs a 12-week summer program that's mostly remote: it ships interns their equipment. Last year its investment, underwriting, marketing, design and public affairs internships went up between mid-September and mid-October 2025, and an IT internship followed in late January 2026. None of those has been posted for 2027 yet, so actuarial students should apply now and everyone else should watch the board from mid-October.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, usually in about 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. What Is a Symetra Internship?
A Symetra internship is a paid, 12-week summer program at Symetra Financial Corporation, a life insurance, retirement and employee benefits company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, whose life insurer was founded in 1957. Symetra is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Sumitomo Life, according to its about page. Its 2026 internship postings described about 2.3 million customers and over 2,600 employees. Interns work with actuaries, investment teams, underwriters, marketers and engineers, and join sessions with senior leaders. It isn't connected to Symmetry Financial Group, an unrelated agency that recruits commission-based insurance agents.

When Do Symetra Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Symetra posts its internships track by track, not all at once. The actuarial internship comes first: the 2027 posting was created September 2, 2026, a week earlier than the 2026 one (September 9, 2025), about eight and a half months before a mid-May start. The other tracks followed last year between September 17 and October 15, 2025, about three to four weeks earlier than the cycle before, and none has appeared yet this year. That makes the projection low-confidence: expect investments, underwriting, marketing, design and public affairs for summer 2027 from mid-October to November 2026. The one IT internship we found for 2026 was created January 27, 2026, so IT for summer 2027 is expected around late January 2027.
Applications for the summer 2027 actuarial internship are open right now. Investment, underwriting, marketing, design, public affairs and IT internships for summer 2027 aren't posted yet.
Investments (commercial mortgage loans, high yield, investment operations, investment risk), underwriting, digital marketing, visual design and public affairs internships for summer 2027 are expected, based on September to October postings last year.
Phone screens, then video interviews. IT internships for summer 2027 are expected around late January 2027, based on one January 2026 posting.
The 12-week program runs, last year from mid- to late May into mid-August, mostly remote with equipment shipped to you. Interns join sessions with senior leaders.
The summer 2028 actuarial internship is expected in early September 2027, based on September postings in 2025 and 2026.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Symetra posts no deadline and doesn't say "until filled," so this is a rolling window, and that cuts both ways. The actuarial posting is a single program with several actuarial teams behind it, and the earlier you apply, the more of those seats are still open. One job board showed an "apply by" date of January 6, 2026 for last year's actuarial internship, but that came from the board, not from Symetra, so don't count on it. For the other tracks, the risk is missing the posting altogether: last year they appeared over about four weeks in September and October. Join Symetra's talent network and check the board weekly from mid-October.
Which Symetra Internship Programs Should You Target?
Symetra offers paid internships year-round and a more formal summer program with access to its leaders. Here's what's posted for 2027 and what ran last year.

|---|---|---|---|
| Actuarial | Open now, posted September 2, 2026; $27 to $30 an hour | 3 months, 100% remote; pricing, reserving and reporting teams | Excel; SQL, R or Python preferred; no exam required |
| Investments | Expected mid-October to November 2026 | Commercial mortgage loans, high yield, investment operations and investment risk; 12 weeks; risk role hybrid in Farmington, CT | Excel, Bloomberg, reconciliations, credit analysis |
| Underwriting | Expected mid-October to November 2026 | 12 weeks, May 18 to August 7, 2026, remote | Research, analysis, Excel, written communication |
| Marketing, design and public affairs | Expected mid-October to November 2026 | Digital marketing, visual design and public affairs; 12 weeks, remote | Adobe InDesign and Photoshop (design test), digital marketing, policy research and writing |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The live actuarial posting and last year's postings set these requirements:
• Degree: a bachelor's degree in progress or completed, with "a strong quantitative background including college level mathematics" for actuarial; the program is open to current students and recent graduates.
• Exams: not required. Symetra's internship page says it doesn't require an actuarial exam pass.
• Work authorization: "Employer work visa sponsorship and support are not provided for this role," per the actuarial posting.
• Internet: at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload over fiber, cable or DSL; satellite (such as Starlink) and cellular hotspots don't qualify, and you test your speed when you apply.
• Track extras (2026): public affairs wanted rising juniors or seniors, and visual design applicants had to pass a basic design test.

Do You Need an Actuarial Exam for Symetra's Internship?
No. Symetra says it doesn't require an exam pass, and the 2027 posting lists only beginner to intermediate Excel, strong analytical and communication skills, and SQL, R or Python as preferred. It does help with exams once you're in: Symetra reimburses one ACTEX or ASM study manual and one exam registration fee. No posting names a GPA minimum.
What Skills Does Symetra Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Across the 2027 actuarial posting and nine 2026 intern postings, the common ground is communication (9 of 10), analytical and problem-solving skills and a self-starting, curious attitude (8 each), plus Excel or Microsoft Office (7). The tracks then split: actuarial prefers SQL, R or Python modeling; investments add Bloomberg, reconciliations and credit analysis; marketing and design ask for Adobe tools and digital marketing interest; IT security asks for SIEM tools and frameworks such as NIST.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each Symetra skill below maps to a remote Externship, a good fit for a remote-first internship program.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| SQL and data modeling | Actuarial 2027: "SQL, R, and/or Python modeling experience preferred" | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Data analysis and recommendations | Actuarial: work with actuaries on "pricing, reserving, and reporting" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
| Credit analysis and investment theses | High Yield 2026: "Developing investment theses and recommendations on single names" | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| Financial statements and valuation | High Yield 2026: evaluating "company fundamentals ... and valuation" | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Digital content and campaigns | Digital Marketing 2026: "website content updates, social media and email activities" | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy |
The SQL match is the most direct: it's the one technical skill the 2027 actuarial posting names, and it's the one most applicants without an exam can show quickly.
What Is the Symetra Application and Interview Process Like?
Symetra doesn't publish its full interview rounds, but the actuarial posting spells out the steps it requires:
1. Apply on Eightfold. Each track is a separate posting on the Symetra job board.
2. Internet check. You test your connection during the application and confirm it meets 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up on fiber, cable or DSL.
3. Phone screen. The first conversation is a phone screen.
4. Video interviews with identity checks. After the phone screen, you must be on video for every interview, and Symetra verifies candidates' identity at key points.
5. Track tests. Some tracks add a test; last year's visual design applicants needed "a proficient score on basic design test."
Our behavioral interview guide shows how to prepare stories for the video rounds.
What the Community Says
Reddit has no first-hand Symetra intern threads, but actuarial students discuss its remote culture, and older intern reviews sit on Indeed.
An actuarial candidate who'd interviewed with Symetra said it was very open to remote work and had many remote employees even before the pandemic, and came away impressed with its remote culture.
Asked who still offers fully remote actuarial work, one commenter said remote roles are rarer in life insurance than in health or P&C, and named Symetra among the few life carriers that still do.
A commercial mortgage loan analyst intern described regular meetings with management and time shadowing the team, before the program went remote.
How Do You Stand Out for a Symetra Internship?
Three moves. First, apply on the right clock. Actuarial students should apply this month; everyone else should have a resume ready for mid-October, when last year's investment, underwriting and marketing roles appeared. Second, show you can work remotely. The program is mostly remote, so give one example of a project you finished on your own schedule, with clear written updates along the way. Third, bring a technical edge without an exam. No exam is required, so SQL, R or Python work you can explain stands out on the actuarial posting. Symetra says its interns "often become lasting members of our team," but it publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Symetra internship?
No. Symetra's summer 2026 interns started in May 2026. The open door now is summer 2027: the 2027 Actuarial Internship Program is live, posted September 2, 2026. Investment, underwriting, marketing, design and public affairs roles for summer 2027 are expected from mid-October 2026.
When do Symetra internships for summer 2027 open?
The actuarial internship opened September 2, 2026. Last year the other tracks went up between September 17 and October 15, 2025, and none had appeared by October 5, 2026, so expect them mid-October to November 2026. IT internships are expected around late January 2027, based on one 2026 posting.
Is the Symetra internship remote?
Mostly, yes. The 2027 actuarial internship is 100% remote with the option to use a Symetra office if you live nearby, and Symetra ships interns their equipment. Not every track was remote last year: the 2026 Investment Risk internship was hybrid in Farmington, Connecticut.
How much do Symetra interns make?
The 2027 actuarial internship pays $27 to $30 an hour, up from $22 to $25 for 2026. Last year's other internships, including commercial mortgage loans, high yield, visual design and IT security, also listed $22 to $25. Don't assume the 2027 rise applies to other tracks until they post.
Do I need an actuarial exam for Symetra's internship?
No. Symetra says it doesn't require an exam pass. The 2027 posting asks for a bachelor's degree in progress with strong college-level math, Excel skills and, preferably, SQL, R or Python. Symetra reimburses one study manual and one exam registration fee during the internship.
Does Symetra sponsor visas for interns?
Not for the actuarial internship. Its posting says Symetra doesn't provide work visa sponsorship or support, and applicants must be authorized to work in the US at hire. Check each track's posting when it appears, but plan on needing your own US work authorization.
What is the Symetra interview process?
Symetra starts with a phone screen, then requires video for every later interview and verifies candidates' identity. You also test your home internet speed when applying. Some tracks add a test: last year's visual design applicants had to pass a basic design test. Symetra doesn't publish the number of rounds.
Is Symetra the same as Symmetry Financial Group?
No. Symetra is a Bellevue, Washington life insurance, retirement and benefits company owned by Japan's Sumitomo Life. Symmetry Financial Group is an unrelated organization that recruits commission-based insurance agents. Symetra's internships are paid hourly and posted on its own job board.
Symetra's actuarial internship is open now, and its other summer 2027 tracks are expected from mid-October. Use the gap: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to discuss in your Symetra video interviews.
