Saronic posted nine summer 2027 internships within two minutes of each other on 9 September 2026, added a tenth on 26 September, and on 3 October 2026 all ten were still open on its Ashby careers board. Every one of them carries the same gate: the work is export-controlled, so you need "U.S. Person" status, meaning a U.S. citizen, green-card holder or certain protected asylees and refugees.

In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, and you intern from May through August 2027. Saronic builds autonomous surface vessels in Austin, Texas. It closed a $1.75 billion Series D at a $9.25 billion valuation in March 2026 and says its headcount has passed 1,300, with a shipyard expansion underway in Franklin, Louisiana.

All ten summer 2027 tracks are open now with no stated deadline. Saronic's summer wave has posted as early as September and as late as March in past years, so there's no reason to wait for a second window.

Saronic's reqs keep asking for hands-on work with real systems, so a finished project is the strongest thing you can add before an interview. Externships are short, remote programs where you complete a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship fits the software tracks, and the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship fits the IT and electrical tracks. Explore all Externships.

What Is a Saronic Internship?

A Saronic internship is a paid, full-time, in-person summer role at an Austin defense-tech company that designs and builds autonomous surface vessels, from the 24-foot Corsair to the 180-foot Marauder. Interns work May through August, 40 hours a week, and each req says they're mentored by experienced engineers in their discipline.

The summer 2027 class spans ten tracks across software, hardware, shipbuilding and operations. Software and Forward Deployed interns work on navigation, sensor integration and path planning, and Forward Deployed interns also travel for field testing "in real-world maritime settings". Naval Architect interns work on hull forms, stability and hydrodynamics. Manufacturing, EHS and Supply Chain interns connect to the Franklin, Louisiana shipyard, which Saronic is expanding with a $300 million, 300,000-square-foot build-out, per its Series D announcement. That release also cites a $392 million US Navy production contract.

When Do Saronic Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Saronic doesn't keep a fixed calendar. Its summer 2025 software req went up on 3 September 2024, its summer 2026 reqs didn't appear until 25 March 2026 (about two months before a May start), and the summer 2027 wave landed on 9 September 2026. That's a swing of about six and a half months between consecutive summers, so treat every projection here as low confidence. Applications for summer 2027 are open now, about eight months before the May 2027 start. Saronic has also run short-lead spring and fall cohorts (spring 2026 roles appeared in January 2026, fall 2026 roles in late June 2026), and none is open today. Applications for summer 2028 are expected anywhere from ~September 2027 to ~March 2028; watch the board rather than a date.

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now on all ten tracks, and none lists a deadline. Check the U.S. Person requirement first, then choose between Austin and the Franklin, Louisiana shipyard roles.

Build proof while you apply: the Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering Externship for the software tracks, or the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy Externship for Manufacturing and Supply Chain.
October to December 2026

The best time to apply. Community reports, mostly from full-time candidates, describe a video interview followed by an onsite loop of several rounds, with replies that can take days or months. Apply, then follow up.

Winter to spring 2027ROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Reqs stay up until filled, with no stated cutoff. A spring 2027 cohort could post around December 2026 to January 2027 if Saronic repeats last year's pattern; that's a single data point, so don't plan around it.

May 2027

The internship starts: full time, in person, 40 hours a week through August 2027, at Austin headquarters or the Franklin shipyard depending on your track.

Summer 2027

Work on autonomy software, vessel hardware or shipyard operations with an engineering mentor. Saronic doesn't publish an intern-to-full-time rate. Applications for summer 2028 are expected anywhere from ~September 2027 to ~March 2028.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Saronic runs a rolling process with no stated deadline, so a seat can go to whoever reaches the hiring manager first. Each track is a single req for the whole class (one Software req, one Naval Architect req and so on), and interviews run while it's up.

The bigger risk is timing you can't predict. Saronic's last two summer waves posted six and a half months apart, and its spring and fall cohorts have posted at or just before their start dates. A reader who waits for a "normal" spring window may find the summer 2027 class already filled. Apply this fall, and if you hear nothing for a few weeks, follow up: candidates on Reddit report slow replies.

Which Saronic Internship Programs Should You Target?

All ten summer 2027 tracks sit in Saronic's "Internships & Co-Ops" department. Pick by major first, then by site.

TrackFocusLocationKey skills named in the req
Software EngineerNavigation, sensor integration, path planning, hardware-in-the-loop testsAustin, TXPython, C++, TypeScript/JavaScript or Rust; robotics basics

Apply on the Saronic Ashby board. The Manufacturing req lists Franklin, LA as its primary site but its text says "based at our headquarters in Austin, TX", so confirm the site with your recruiter.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Saronic's intern requirements are short, and one of them rules out many applicants:

• U.S. Person status: all ten reqs say the role "requires access to export-controlled information or items that require 'U.S. Person' status". That means U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and certain protected asylees or refugees.

• Enrollment: currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program for most tracks; the Supply Chain req asks for a graduation date of December 2027 or later.

• Clearance: none of the ten intern reqs mentions a security clearance.

• GPA: no minimum appears in any req.

• Onsite: full time, in office, 40 hours a week from May through August 2027.

Can International Students Apply to Saronic?

Usually not. The U.S. Person line appears on every intern req, and it's tied to export-control law rather than a company preference, so it isn't waived case by case. A green-card holder qualifies; an F-1 student on CPT or OPT generally doesn't. If you're unsure where you stand, settle it before you spend an application, because the export-control check happens before any offer becomes final.

What Skills Does Saronic Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Saronic's reqs read like a robotics company's, even on the non-software tracks. The coding tracks ask for Python plus C++, TypeScript or Rust and a "basic understanding of robotics principles, autonomous systems, and sensor technologies". Hardware tracks add build work: Arduino and Raspberry Pi programming, hand and power tools, CAD in Rhino, AutoCAD or SolidWorks. Across the class, the most repeated qualities are analytical problem-solving and working on your own in a fast-moving shop.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each row pairs a skill from Saronic's reqs with a remote Externship that ends in a finished project you can talk through in an interview.

None of these is a Saronic program, and Extern isn't affiliated with Saronic. They're practice on the same kinds of problems, finished before your interview.

What Is the Saronic Application and Interview Process Like?

Saronic doesn't publish its intern interview process. This is what the reqs and candidate reports show, with full-time reports labeled as such:

1. Confirm eligibility. Check the U.S. Person line before applying; it appears on every intern req.

2. Apply on Ashby. Choose one or two tracks that match your major. Each track is a single req for the whole summer class.

3. Video interview. Full-time candidates on Reddit describe a remote or video interview as the first step; one said it was conversational for a non-coding role.

4. Onsite loop. One full-time candidate described an onsite of four rounds after the video interview. Expect technical questions tied to your track.

5. Decision. Reported waits range from about five days to several months. One full-time hire applied directly, then messaged the hiring manager on LinkedIn.

If the silence stretches past a few weeks, a short, polite follow-up is reasonable. Our guide on what to do after being ghosted following an interview covers the wording.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit has one first-hand Saronic intern thread and two busier threads from full-time candidates; we've labeled which is which.

A student who missed out on quant-firm internships accepted a Saronic software internship starting in May 2026. Commenters called defense tech rewarding because your code runs on real hardware, and by July the intern wrote that the work had been great.

Austin job seekers say Saronic is hard to hear back from. One full-time hire applied directly, messaged the hiring manager and got an offer quickly; another heard back five days after an onsite, while others waited weeks after meeting a VP.

Several full-time applicants describe a video interview followed by a four-round onsite, then long gaps with little feedback. One former composites employee was sharply critical of the workplace, while another commenter said that wasn't their experience.

How Do You Stand Out for a Saronic Internship?

Three moves, all doable this fall.

Show something you built. The hardware reqs list Arduino and Raspberry Pi programming, hand and power tools and CAD; the software reqs ask for robotics basics. A robot, drone, rover or boat project from a club or class, with your part spelled out, answers most of what these reqs ask for.

Speak to the maritime problem. Saronic builds uncrewed vessels for defense customers, including a $392 million Navy production contract. Knowing the difference between its small Corsair and the 180-foot Marauder, and why autonomy at sea is hard (GPS denial, sea state, long endurance), sets you apart from generic robotics applicants.

Be easy to say yes to. Confirm U.S. Person status up front, name the site you can work at, and say you're available full time from May through August. Saronic doesn't publish an applicant count or a return-offer rate, so a clean, specific application is the lever you control.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Saronic internship?

No. Summer 2026 ran from May to August 2026 and is over, and the fall 2026 roles posted in June and July. What's open now are Saronic's ten summer 2027 internships, posted on 9 and 26 September 2026 on its Ashby board. None lists a deadline, so apply this fall.

When do Saronic internship applications open?

Applications for summer 2027 are already open: nine tracks posted on 9 September 2026 and a tenth on 26 September. Saronic's calendar moves a lot, since summer 2026 roles posted in late March 2026, so applications for summer 2028 could appear anywhere from about September 2027 to March 2028.

Do Saronic interns need to be U.S. citizens?

You need U.S. Person status, which is broader than citizenship. All ten summer 2027 reqs say the work involves export-controlled information, so U.S. citizens, green-card holders and certain protected asylees and refugees qualify. Students on F-1 visas generally don't, and the requirement isn't waived for interns.

How much do Saronic interns get paid?

Saronic doesn't publish intern pay. The compensation field is empty on all ten summer 2027 reqs, and none of the job descriptions states an hourly rate. Some job aggregators show salary ranges for these roles, but those figures don't come from Saronic's own postings, so ask your recruiter.

How long is the Saronic internship?

It runs from May through August 2027, full time and in person at 40 hours a week. Every summer 2027 req states the same schedule. Saronic has also run short-lead spring and fall cohorts in past years, but none is open as of October 2026.

Where are Saronic internships located?

All ten summer 2027 tracks list Austin, Texas, where Saronic has its headquarters. The Manufacturing, EHS and Supply Chain tracks also list the Franklin, Louisiana shipyard. The Manufacturing req's text says Austin while its listed location is Franklin, so confirm the site with your recruiter before you accept.

Is there a GPA requirement for Saronic internships?

No minimum GPA appears in any summer 2027 req. Saronic asks for current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's program in a related field, and the Supply Chain track wants a graduation date of December 2027 or later. Projects and hands-on build experience carry more weight in the reqs.

What skills does Saronic look for in interns?

The coding tracks ask for Python plus C++, TypeScript, JavaScript or Rust and basic robotics and sensor knowledge. Hardware tracks add Arduino or Raspberry Pi work and CAD tools such as Rhino, AutoCAD, SolidWorks or Orca3D. Across tracks, the reqs stress analytical problem-solving and working independently.

Saronic's ten summer 2027 tracks are open now and close when they fill, so apply this fall. While you wait to hear back, a remote Externship gives you a finished project to walk an interviewer through.
