Safran, the French aerospace group, says it employs 110,000 people and generated EUR 31.3 billion in revenue in 2025 (from its US job postings). In the US its most structured student program is at Safran Defense & Space, Inc. (Safran DSI), whose Optronics unit in Bedford, New Hampshire posted 15 internships on 17 September 2026, from optical and mechanical engineering to FP&A and graphic design. DSI's program runs about three months, early June to August, pays $17 to $25 an hour, and requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Safran's US plants also post a handful of part-time and rotational internships year-round. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026 and intern in summer 2027 at Safran DSI; other Safran US internships open whenever a site needs one.

Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most commonly over 8 weeks. The Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship fits DSI's FP&A and accounting internships, and the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship fits its supply chain role and the plant-level supply chain interns. What Is a Safran Internship?
A Safran internship in the US usually means the Safran Defense & Space (DSI) Internship Program: a paid summer placement of about three months, early June to August, at a unit that supports national defense and space missions. Its Optronics business in Bedford, NH (formerly Optics 1) designs hand-held thermal and infrared cameras, laser range finders and navigation systems. Interns work 40 hours a week, get one-on-one mentorship, and join lunch-and-learns, resume reviews and mock interviews; they don't receive paid time off. Separately, Safran Cabin, Seats, Electrical & Power and Safran USA post individual student roles at their US plants, often part-time during the school year.

When Do Safran Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Safran DSI's own FAQ says its talent team "begins posting internship openings in the fall", and this year all 15 Bedford role reqs carry a 17 September 2026 posting date (the US-wide talent-pool req went up on 14 September). With a June start, that's about 8.5 months of lead time. Safran's plant-level roles don't follow a season: the seven live on 3 October were posted between 1 May and 3 October 2026. Safran Federal Systems in Rochester, NY had no US interns on its board; its last summer req was first listed on 17 March 2026, one data point.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now at Safran DSI: 15 Bedford, NH roles plus the "Future Opportunities" talent pool for other DSI sites. Seven unit-level student roles are also live in Texas, California and Florida.
Rolling review; DSI recruiters attend college career fairs in fall and spring. Apply early, since each role is a single opening.
Applications for summer 2027 at Safran Federal Systems (Rochester, NY) expected, based on its 17 March 2026 listing. Plant roles keep posting as needed.
Safran DSI summer program starts (FAQ: "beginning of June"; some start earlier or extend later).
About three months at 40 hours a week. Safran doesn't publish a return-offer rate.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
DSI posted all 15 Bedford roles on one day, and each is a single departmental opening, from Optical Engineering to Human Resources. No req states a closing date, so the first strong applicant a manager interviews can end the search. DSI's FAQ says recruiting continues through fall and spring career fairs, which means the pool keeps growing while seats are filled. If a Bedford role matches your major, applying in October puts you in front of the manager before the fair season adds competition.
Which Safran Internship Programs Should You Target?
Safran DSI's 15 Bedford roles split into STEM and business tracks; the plant roles are separate.
| Program | Roles | Term | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safran DSI, STEM (Bedford, NH) | Electrical, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Optical, Quality, Systems, Transition Engineering; IT; Configuration Management | Summer 2027, ~June-August | $17-$25/hr |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Safran DSI's requirements, from its reqs and FAQ:
• Citizenship: "US Citizenship or Permanent Resident" on every DSI role req; the talent-pool req says this applies to all roles.
• GPA: "Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher" on 6 of the 15 role reqs plus the talent-pool req; not stated on the rest.
• Class year: "Juniors and seniors are given preference", though underclassmen may be considered (FAQ).
• Enrollment: actively enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in a relevant field.
• Plant roles: three Texas and Florida roles are ITAR-controlled (U.S. citizen or U.S. person); Seats in Gainesville asks for juniors or seniors legally authorized to work in the US.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff at Safran DSI?
It's stated as a requirement on the Mechanical, Electrical, Optical, Quality, Systems and Graphic Design reqs and on the talent-pool req, so treat it as firm for those. The other nine role reqs, including Accounting, FP&A, Supply Chain and IT, don't mention a GPA. If you're below 3.0, those roles and the plant-level postings are the realistic targets, and your experience will carry more of the weight.
What Skills Does Safran Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Every DSI req lists "Experience working in an ITAR environment" as a plus, which reflects its defense work rather than a hard gate. Beyond that, the reqs lean on communication, attention to detail and Microsoft Office or Excel. Engineering roles add tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Altium, MATLAB and Python, while manufacturing and finance roles name SAP or another ERP system and Lean or Six Sigma methods.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
Safran DSI opened on the same September schedule as most engineering employers, so October is when its seats and its competitors' seats are both being filled.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
None of these is a Safran program, but each builds a skill DSI's business-track reqs name.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Forecasting and financial analysis | DSI Accounting and FP&A internships; SAP familiarity listed on both | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis Externship |
| Supply chain and operations analytics | DSI Supply Chain; Safran Cabin supplier performance (Excel, Power BI) | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship |
| Content and brand work | DSI Graphic Design & Marketing; Safran Cabin marketing intern | TikTok Social Media Content & Brand Strategy Externship |
Engineering applicants get more from a hands-on project with SOLIDWORKS, optics or test equipment; the Mechanical req also lists machine-shop tools and 3D printing.
What Is the Safran Application and Interview Process Like?
Safran DSI describes a simple flow on its FAQ; the interview detail comes from Reddit accounts.
1. Find the role. Search DSI's "View All Jobs" list and apply to the specific Bedford role.
2. Use the talent pool if nothing fits. Apply to "DSI Internship Program - Future Opportunities" or join the Talent Community for other DSI sites.
3. Career fairs. DSI recruiters attend college fairs in fall and spring.
4. Interviews. A 2021 manufacturing intern applicant described a first interview, an HR interview, then an on-site round with the manager, a lead engineer and the team, and got the offer.
5. Offer. Timing isn't published.
Plant roles on safran-group.com use the group's candidate area; its careers pages describe a phone interview followed by face-to-face interviews.
What People Say on Reddit
Reddit has few first-hand Safran intern threads; these are the useful ones, including views from US employees.
A manufacturing engineering intern applicant described three rounds: a first interview, an HR interview, then an on-site meeting with the manager, a lead engineer and the team. They received the offer afterward.
A student preparing for a Safran quality engineering intern interview got advice from others, and later commenters through 2026 reported their own Safran engineering intern interviews, which suggests these roles recur each year.
Employees at Safran's Texas plants described steady hours and long tenures and plenty of options for engineers, while a former California employee cited slow raises; one commenter felt French headquarters treats US divisions as secondary.
How Do You Stand Out for a Safran Internship?
Three moves. First, apply to the exact Bedford role and to the Future Opportunities pool if you'd go to another DSI site; the pool is how DSI fills roles that aren't posted. Second, show hands-on work. The Mechanical req lists SOLIDWORKS, drawings and bills of materials, functional testing, FEA and machine-shop tools, so bring a prototype you designed and tested. Third, mention any work in a controlled environment: ITAR experience is a listed plus on every DSI req. Safran doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate.
