Last updated: October 2026
Rio Tinto's US summer 2027 internships are already half gone. On September 1, 2026 its Kennecott copper operation outside Salt Lake City posted a wave of internships across geology, mining, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry and finance. By 3 October, six of those Kennecott roles had come off the board, and the remaining US postings are scheduled to come down between October 9 and October 16, 2026.
Two new ones arrived on October 1: Process Engineering internships at Rio Tinto's borates operations in Boron and Wilmington, California, paying $20 to $50 an hour. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026 (or in the January 2027 wave), you intern in summer 2027.

What Is a Rio Tinto Internship?
A Rio Tinto internship in the US is a paid, roughly three-month summer placement at one of the mining company's American operations, most often Rio Tinto Kennecott, the integrated copper mine, concentrator, smelter and refinery near Salt Lake City. Kennecott has mined the Bingham Canyon ore body since 1903, and Rio Tinto's postings say it produces about 11% of annual US copper.
Interns join a discipline team (geology, mining engineering, environmental, hydrogeology or process engineering this cycle) and work on site, with safety as the first priority. Rio Tinto says successful interns get early access to apply for its Graduate Development Program, though an internship doesn't guarantee a graduate offer.

When Do Rio Tinto Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Rio Tinto's own recruiting table lists two US intake months: September and January. The September wave for summer 2027 posted on September 1, 2026 at Kennecott, with two exploration roles added on September 17 and two California process engineering roles on October 1.
The postings don't stay up long. Rio Tinto's Workday records set an end date for each one, and several have already moved: the hydrogeology role, first set to come down on September 30, and roles first set for October 1 now run to October 9. Six Kennecott roles, including Finance and Mechanical Engineering, are gone.
Some tracks have already closed. Still open for summer 2027: Geologist, Geology/Exploration (2), Mining Engineer, Environmental Engineer and Hydrogeologist in Salt Lake City, plus Process Engineering in Boron and Wilmington, California. Finance, metallurgical, electrical, mechanical, geotechnical and chemist roles are gone.
Scheduled end dates: October 9 for the Geologist, Mining, Environmental and Hydrogeologist roles, October 15 for the two Geology/Exploration roles, and October 16 for the California Process Engineering roles. Any of them can come down earlier.
Selection for the September wave: an SHL online assessment, a phone screen and an interview with a team leader. Rio Tinto says the process takes around four months from the close of applications.
Rio Tinto's second US recruiting month. Expect more summer 2027 intern postings, possibly at other US sites or in disciplines that didn't post in September.
The roughly 12-week internship runs on site in Utah or California. Strong interns get early access to apply for Rio Tinto's two-year Graduate Development Program.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Every Rio Tinto intern req says the company "reserves the right to remove job postings as there is enough applicants" and asks you to apply as soon as possible. Its graduates page adds that it can't accept applications after the advertised closing date. That makes this a short window, and the evidence shows it: six of the Kennecott roles posted on September 1 were off the board within a month.
If your discipline is still listed, apply this week. If it isn't, don't wait on an extension; plan for the January wave instead.
Which Rio Tinto Internship Programs Should You Target?

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
The live US reqs and Rio Tinto's program page set these requirements:
• Enrollment: a registered student at a recognized American university, with at least one year completed in a related field, and returning to university after the internship. Rio Tinto's page targets second-year to penultimate-year students.
• Work authorization: the right to work full-time in the United States. Rio Tinto participates in E-Verify.
• Driver's license: a valid driver's license, stated in all 8 live US reqs.
• GPA: none stated in the reqs we read.

Can Graduating Seniors Apply?
Generally no. Rio Tinto's internship eligibility is built around students who return to university after the internship, from second year to penultimate year. If you graduate before summer 2027, look at its US graduate roles instead; eight "Graduate" reqs were live at Kennecott alongside the internships in late September.
What Skills Does Rio Tinto Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
We read all 8 live US intern reqs on 3 October 2026. The technical content is discipline-specific (core logging for geology, mine planning tools for mining, process hazard analysis for process engineering), but the shared requirements are consistent.
Basics first. All 8 require at least one year of study completed and a valid driver's license. Soft skills. Seven ask for leadership skills, eagerness to learn, and communication and teamwork, and six ask for flexibility and autonomy. Technical work. Half describe data analysis, modeling or reconciliation.

How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?
Mechanical engineering intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026
vs 207 in August
Engineering intern hiring for summer 2027 peaked in September. If you missed Rio Tinto's wave, apply to other engineering employers now and watch for its January postings.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size. Pay = median of employer-published ranges only (87 postings in September, 36 in August).
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill area maps to a remote Externship you can finish before the January wave.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental and hydrogeology data | Environmental Engineer and Hydrogeologist reqs at Kennecott | Arceh Children's Environmental Health Analytics |
| Operations planning | Mining Engineer req: "mine planning and scheduling tools to create optimal mine designs and schedules" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy |
| Data analysis and reconciliation | Geology req: "sampling and data analysis, and geologic modelling"; Mining req: "effective reconciliation" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
None of these are mining projects. They give you finished work in data and operations to discuss in a behavioral interview, alongside your coursework in geology or engineering.
What Is the Rio Tinto Application and Interview Process Like?
Rio Tinto publishes its process on the graduates and interns page:
1. Apply while the posting is open. Answer the screening questions on the req for your discipline.
2. Online assessment. An SHL assessment of about 30 minutes covering numerical reasoning and working style, usually due within 24 to 48 hours of the invite.
3. Phone screen. A short call to confirm fit and logistics.
4. Interview. A conversation with a leader from the team you'd join. Expect behavioral questions and a focus on safety.
5. Offer and checks. Pre-employment checks may include medical and background screening, followed by pre-boarding.
Rio Tinto says the process typically takes around four months from the close of applications, so an October application may not resolve until early 2027.
What Students on Reddit Say
US-specific Reddit discussion of Rio Tinto internships is thin, so two of these cards come from non-US threads and are labeled that way.
On a 2026 thread about a Canadian Rio Tinto site, a Rio employee at another mine advised bringing strong safety examples, opening every interview with a safety share, and preparing a story for each of the company's values: care, courage and curiosity.
A former Rio Tinto exploration geologist called it one of the best employers of a 12-year career, citing training and fair treatment. Another commenter said ex-Rio geologists they knew disliked having little autonomy at a big company.
When a graduate applicant was told they lacked experience, commenters said the fix is to start internships as early in your degree as you can, because students who wait until their second-to-last year are at a disadvantage.
How Do You Stand Out at Rio Tinto?
Rio Tinto doesn't publish applicant numbers or a conversion rate, so we won't estimate either. Three moves fit how it hires.
First, apply to the exact discipline req on the day you see it. Rio Tinto removes postings once it has enough applicants, so speed matters more here than at most employers. Second, prepare for the SHL assessment before you apply, since the invite gives you only a day or two.
Third, lead with safety. Every req calls safety the number one priority, and community advice is to open each interview with a safety example. Practice stories that show care, courage and curiosity, and have your driver's license and US work authorization sorted, because both are hard requirements.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Rio Tinto internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and Rio Tinto is now hiring for summer 2027. Eight US roles are open, scheduled to come down between October 9 and 16, 2026, while six Kennecott roles, including Finance and Mechanical Engineering, have already closed. A second US wave is expected in January 2027.
When do Rio Tinto internship applications open in the US?
Rio Tinto lists two US recruiting months: September and January. For summer 2027, the Kennecott wave posted on September 1, 2026, with more roles added on September 17 and October 1. The next US wave for summer 2027 is expected in January 2027, though which sites and disciplines will post isn't known.
How much do Rio Tinto interns get paid?
Rio Tinto's California reqs for summer 2027 list $20 to $50 an hour. The Utah reqs say only "a competitive salary" and don't publish a figure. Eligible students also get a relocation lump sum and a one-time reimbursement for travel to and from the work site, according to the live postings.
Who is eligible for a Rio Tinto internship?
Registered students at a recognized US university with at least one year completed in a related field, who are returning to school after the internship. You need the right to work full-time in the United States and a valid driver's license. Rio Tinto's own program page targets second-year to penultimate-year students.
How long is a Rio Tinto internship?
About three months. The US reqs describe a three-month summer internship, and Rio Tinto's program page calls it a 12-week intern program with hands-on experience aligned to your field of study. Interns work on site at operations such as Kennecott in Utah or the borates mine and refinery in Boron, California.
What is the Rio Tinto internship hiring process?
You apply to a discipline req, then complete an SHL online assessment of about 30 minutes, usually within 24 to 48 hours. A phone screen and an interview with a team leader follow, then an offer and pre-employment checks. Rio Tinto says it takes around four months from the close of applications.
What if my discipline's posting already closed?
Watch for the January 2027 wave, Rio Tinto's second US recruiting month. Finance, metallurgical, electrical, mechanical, geotechnical and chemist roles at Kennecott were posted in September and have since closed. Set a job alert on Rio Tinto's careers site and apply to peer mining employers in the meantime.
Does a Rio Tinto internship lead to a full-time job?
It can. Rio Tinto says successful interns get early access to apply for its two-year Graduate Development Program, but an internship doesn't guarantee a graduate offer. No conversion rate is published. Graduate roles were posted at Kennecott alongside the internships in September 2026, which shows the pipeline is active.
Rio Tinto's September wave closes within two weeks and its January wave is the next door. Apply now if your discipline is listed, then use the months before January to finish a remote Externship you can talk through in a behavioral interview.
