Externships are short, remote professional experience programs where you work on real projects with real companies. What Is a PwC Internship?

A PwC internship is a paid, full-time program at the Big 4 firm PwC where students work on live audit, tax, and consulting engagements. Summer internships run June through mid-August; winter internships run January through March or April and drop you straight into audit's busy season.

The brand carries real weight. Vault's 2026 survey ranked PwC the #1 most prestigious accounting firm, a title it has held 17 times in 20 years, and interns rate the firm 4.2 out of 5 on Glassdoor. The firm has historically brought in around 3,500 summer interns a year across 70+ US offices.

And the internship isn't a side quest; it's the front door. That "over 90% of our interns receiving full time offers" line comes straight from PwC, so the real contest happens two years before the job.

When Do PwC Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

PwC hasn't published summer 2028 dates yet, and its calendar runs at two speeds. Audit, Tax, and DAT recruit in a fall wave nearly two school years out: summer 2027 postings opened in fall 2025, and PwC's Destination CPA event for accepted 2027 interns ran in April 2026. Project that forward: audit and tax applications for summer 2028 are expected to open August to October 2026, about 22 months before the internship starts. Advisory, consulting, and Products & Technology windows for summer 2028 are expected between fall 2026 and spring 2027, roughly 14 to 20 months before the start date.

So which wave is yours? An accounting student targeting summer 2028 applies in sophomore fall; a consulting-minded classmate gets until junior year. Our guide to when internship applications open maps how this compares across industries.

And there are fewer seats each cycle: news reports say PwC plans to cut entry-level hiring about 32% between FY2025 and FY2028, with audit hit hardest.

Summer 2028 postings aren't open yet, but summer 2027 isn't fully closed: Tax JD intern roles are live with a July 17, 2026 national deadline. For everyone else, this gap decides who walks into the fall wave with proof on their resume.

Build that proof now: an FP&A and valuation Externship with Attronica or a financial modeling project with Yinan Zhao ends with a real deliverable you can walk through in a PwC behavioral interview.
Aug–Oct 2026EXPECTEDROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Audit, Tax, and DAT applications for summer 2028 internships are expected to open in this fall wave, about 22 months before the internship starts. Accounting students: that's your sophomore fall. Locations close as offers are accepted, so apply the week your preferred office opens.

Late 2026 – spring 2027EXPECTED

Advisory, Consulting, and Products & Technology postings for summer 2028 are expected across this stretch, roughly 14 to 20 months before the start date. Most Advisory tracks add a case interview, so start case prep here. Refill waves for client-service seats can also reopen by location.

The SHL work-style assessment lands in your inbox within hours of applying; two live virtual behavioral interviews follow, and offers go out by location on a rolling basis. Sophomores who accept Audit, Tax, or DAT offers may be invited to Destination CPA.

The internship itself, June through mid-August 2028, full-time at your chosen office. Finish engaged and on time: PwC says over 90% of its interns receive full-time offers.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Rolling here is official policy, not folklore. PwC's recruiting page states: "when our roles open up, we accept applications on an ongoing basis by location and close them as offers are accepted and positions are filled," adding that it highly recommends applying early.

And your application isn't complete until you finish the emailed assessment, so knock that out the same week. Tempted to wait for a refill wave? Students on r/PwC report seats reopening the following September when a summer fills, but by then offers already went out months earlier.

Which PwC Internship Programs Should You Target?

PwC runs its US entry-level internships across a handful of core tracks, listed on its programs and events page. One rule shapes your choice: PwC lets you interview for only one opportunity at a time, so pick the track that matches your major before you apply, not after.

A note on the Start internship: it was PwC's early-identification sophomore program, eligibility was broadened in February 2024, and it no longer appears on the official programs page. Treat it as unconfirmed for this cycle and check pwc.to/entryleveljobs for current postings.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Straight from live PwC job descriptions and the official FAQ:

GPA: required cumulative GPA of 3.0 on most intern postings; some Advisory roles state a preference for 3.3.

Class year: client-service summer internships are built for the summer before your final year of school; the early audit/tax wave means many accounting students apply as sophomores.

CPA path (Audit/Tax/DAT): you don't need 150 credits to intern, but the Audit Intern JD requires you to meet CPA education requirements, usually the 150-credit-hour rule, before starting full-time.

Work authorization: PwC says it isn't hiring candidates who need H-1B lottery sponsorship, with narrow exceptions.

Enrollment: internships must be completed before you finish your degree, and they're full-time at 40+ hours a week.

Sitting at 120 credits with no plan for the other 30? PwC's While You Work CPA Acceleration Program pairs paid part-time PwC work with a tuition-paid Northeastern master's that covers the gap. For how PwC's bar compares to other firms' timelines, see our finance internships summer 2027 guide.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

At the screening stage, treat it that way: 3.0 is printed in the JD, and the assessment and interviews sit behind it.

But the printed floor isn't the competitive bar. Advisory postings already nudge toward 3.3, and Big 4 community consensus puts comfortable territory at 3.5+. Below the line, campus events and recruiter relationships matter more than another resume pass; PwC even publishes a campus recruiter map so you can find yours.

What Skills Does PwC Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

These come from PwC's own current intern postings, not a generic listicle.

Technical. The Audit Intern JD asks for basic financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, and GAAP knowledge. The Tax JD Intern posting wants candidates who can analyze tax rules and work with large, complex data sets. The Advisory PM Intern JD adds Agile, market research, and using AI to create efficiencies.

Analytical. Every current intern JD prints the same PwC Professional line: gather information from a range of sources, analyze facts, and discern patterns. Audit adds problem-solving while juggling multiple tasks.

Soft. The standardized skills block asks interns to actively listen, ask questions to check understanding, seek and act on feedback, and build commercial awareness. Tax adds interacting with client and firm management at various levels.

And the pattern across live postings is blunt: communication beats every technical skill in frequency.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

You don't have to wait for PwC to build any of this. Each skill in its JDs maps to a remote Externship where you finish a real company project and leave with proof you can talk through in a behavioral interview.

What Is the PwC Application and Interview Process Like?

The whole process runs through PwC's recruiting page playbook:

1. Pick one track. You can interview for only one opportunity at a time, so match your major to a career area first.

2. Apply at pwc.to/entryleveljobs. Search "summer 2028" by keyword, select a preferred office, and upload your resume as a PDF. No cover letter needed, and don't apply through your school's career site.

3. Complete the assessment. For most US entry-level roles, PwC emails an untimed, SHL-hosted work-style questionnaire within a few hours of applying. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, results stay valid for 120 days, and your application doesn't count as complete without it. Can you study for it? No; it's behavioral, so answer honestly and consistently. (Don't confuse it with PwC UK's game-based assessment; that's a different process entirely.)

4. Interview live and virtually. Audit, Tax, and DAT candidates get two behavioral interviews back-to-back; most Advisory roles add a case interview. Prep STAR stories mapped to the PwC Professional framework. GenAI help is allowed in applications "where appropriate" but banned during assessments and interviews.

5. Offers roll out by location. Sophomores who accept Audit, Tax, or DAT offers may be invited to Destination CPA, a three-day event with travel paid by PwC.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three threads capture what the process feels like from the inside.

How Do You Stand Out From Thousands of Applicants?

Third-party estimates put PwC internship acceptance around 5%, an unofficial figure but the right order of magnitude for a firm this ranked.

So what actually separates an offer from silence? Three moves matter most:

1. Apply the week your office opens. Rolling-by-location review means an October application and a January application aren't competing on equal footing.

2. Bring finished project work. A resume line like "built a valuation model and presented recommendations to the company" beats a list of course names in a behavioral interview built around real examples. That's exactly what a completed Externship gives you, even if you don't have any internship experience yet.

3. Protect the return offer once you're in. Interns on r/Big4 report the ones who miss out were disengaged, glued to their phones, or chronically late.

Yet the 90% culture has a caveat: some 2026 interns report PwC tightening return offers, consistent with the entry-level hiring cuts. Historically 90%+, but expect more competition through 2028.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

Almost nobody applies to PwC alone, and the fall audit/tax wave hits every major accounting firm on nearly the same calendar. Deloitte, EY, and KPMG round out the Big 4, while Grant Thornton and RSM offer the same CPA-track work with smaller intern classes and sometimes friendlier odds. The technicals and behaviorals overlap heavily, so adding firms costs little extra prep.

Our Big 4 accounting and audit internships guide covers the full landscape and timelines, and a dedicated Deloitte guide is coming next in this series.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2027 PwC internship?

Mostly no. PwC recruits by location on a rolling basis, and most summer 2027 client-service seats filled after the fall 2025 wave. As of July 2026, Tax JD intern roles for summer 2027 are still posted with a July 17, 2026 deadline. Check pwc.to/entryleveljobs for reopened locations.

When do PwC internship applications open for summer 2028?

Earlier than you'd think. In recent cycles, PwC's Audit, Tax, and DAT postings opened in a fall wave about 22 months before the internship starts, so expect summer 2028 client-service roles around August to October 2026, with advisory and refill windows into 2027. Search "summer 2028" at pwc.to/entryleveljobs.

Is PwC recruiting rolling, and should I apply early?

Yes. PwC's official FAQ says it recruits on a rolling basis for most opportunities, accepting applications by location and closing them as offers are accepted, and it highly recommends applying early. Complete the emailed assessment immediately too; your application doesn't count as complete without it.

What GPA and credits do you need for a PwC internship?

Most PwC intern postings require a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and some Advisory roles prefer 3.3. For Audit and Tax, you must also be on track to meet CPA education requirements, typically 150 credit hours, before starting full-time. PwC's While You Work fellowship covers the extra 30 credits through a tuition-paid master's.

What is PwC's online assessment like?

For most US entry-level roles, PwC emails an untimed, SHL-hosted questionnaire within hours of applying. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, asks work-style questions, and results stay valid for 120 days. There's nothing to study; answer honestly. Don't confuse it with PwC UK's game-based assessment, which US applicants never see.

Do PwC interns get return offers?

Yes, at one of the highest rates anywhere: PwC's own internship page says over 90% of interns receive full-time offers, and Reddit interns back the number up. Some report tightening as PwC trims entry-level hiring, so show up engaged, hit deadlines, and ask for feedback to stay in the 90%.

How much do PwC interns get paid?

PwC prints ranges in every posting: audit interns earn $30.75 to $40.75 per hour, tax up to $44.75, and advisory and products & technology roles up to $48.00. Glassdoor pegs the average around $33 per hour. Internships are full-time, roughly June through mid-August for summer cohorts.

Does PwC still run the Start internship for sophomores?

Unclear for this cycle. Start was PwC's early-identification sophomore internship; eligibility was broadened in February 2024, and the program no longer appears on PwC's official programs page. But sophomores aren't locked out: the early audit/tax wave means many client-service applicants apply in sophomore fall anyway. Check pwc.to/entryleveljobs for current listings.

The fall 2026 wave will reward the students who show up with something finished.
