Last updated: October 2026

Protective Life publishes what most insurers keep quiet: its summer interns earn $21 to $22 an hour for 40 hours a week, with paid, furnished housing based on need. On October 5, 2026 its Lever job board listed eight summer 2027 internship programs (actuarial, IT, business systems, business analytics, internal audit, communications, meetings and events, and sales), all at the Birmingham, Alabama corporate office and all running May 31 to July 30, 2027. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027.

The postings went up between September 8 and 21, 2026, and none names a deadline. Protective's own wording is the reason to move now: its program "receives a lot of interest" and its "process starts early," and it warns that first contact can take several weeks.

What Is a Protective Life Internship?

A Protective Life internship is a paid summer program at the Birmingham, Alabama corporate office of Protective, a life insurance, retirement and asset protection company that has been part of Dai-ichi Life Group since 2015 and says it has $1 trillion of life insurance in force and 115-plus years of history. Interns join one team for May 31 to July 30, 2027, work on projects tied to that team's goals, and get professional development training, one-on-one mentoring, networking with leaders and fellow interns, and volunteer service. Protective's internships page publishes pay, housing, eligibility and the interview steps, which makes it one of the more transparent insurer programs.

When Do Protective Life Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Protective posted its eight summer 2027 programs between September 8 and 21, 2026 for a May 31, 2027 start, so applications open about 8.3 to 8.7 months before the internship. Its internships page says "we begin accepting applications in the fall," with expressions of interest welcome year-round. The prior cycle fits: archived copies of the Lever board show no internship postings in late April 2025, after the summer 2025 roles came down, and none yet on August 9, 2025. Protective runs one summer cohort. Applications for summer 2028 are expected around September 2027.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Protective hires on a rolling basis, and none of its eight postings names a deadline. Every posting carries the same warning: "Our program receives a lot of interest, and our process starts early. Please be patient as it may take us several weeks to make initial contact with you." That means two things. The first reviews happen in the fall, so an October application is in the first batch. And because responses are slow, a student who applies in February may hear back after the seats are gone. Last cycle's board had no internship postings left by late April. Apply in the first weeks.

Which Protective Life Internship Programs Should You Target?

Protective runs eight separate programs on one calendar, May 31 to July 30, 2027. Pay is set per program:

ProgramFocusPayKey skills
ActuarialProjects aligned with the actuarial team's goals$22/hrMath, actuarial science or finance; one exam highly preferred; SQL, VBA or C++; Excel

All eight are on the Protective Lever board; the internships page covers pay, housing and the interview steps.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Protective spells out who it's looking for on the internships page and in each posting:

• Class year: rising juniors or seniors; graduate students are also eligible. Five postings say the program is "designed and optimized" for rising juniors and seniors, and three say juniors and seniors are preferred.

• Enrollment: "actively enrolled in either an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program as of May 31st, 2027."

• Majors: business, communications, accounting, finance, marketing, IT, actuarial science and related fields, depending on the program.

• Exams: for Actuarial, completing at least one actuarial exam is "highly preferred," not required.

• GPA and sponsorship: neither the internships page nor any of the eight postings states a GPA minimum or a visa sponsorship policy.

• Resume: include your anticipated graduation date; Protective asks for it explicitly.

Does Protective Life Have a GPA Cutoff?

Not a published one. The internships page and all eight postings are silent on GPA. The firmer filter is class year: the program is built for rising juniors and seniors, so a first-year student is unlikely to fit, and you need to be enrolled as of May 31, 2027. Actuarial applicants without an exam can still apply, though one passed exam is highly preferred.

2. Wait for contact. Qualified candidates are invited to interview, and Protective says this can take several weeks.

What Students on Reddit Say

Birmingham locals on Reddit describe Protective as a well-liked employer, with one older data point on interns.

Employees say the experience depends heavily on your business unit; one called the IT group great to work with, and the large campus and its cafeteria are a real perk. Several said they've stayed for years and like the people.

A corporate tax analyst said their group, like most of the company, is hybrid: three office days a week that employees choose, two at home. That describes full-time staff; the internship is based at the Birmingham corporate office.

A commenter said Protective was hiring many young programmers and that, the previous summer, every intern had been offered a full-time job. It's a single second-hand report from 2019, not a published rate.

How Do You Stand Out for a Protective Life Internship?

Three moves. First, apply in October. The postings went up in September, Protective says its process starts early, and replies can take weeks. Second, show the tools your program names. Actuarial applicants should bring SQL, VBA or C++ and ideally one exam; analytics applicants SQL, Excel and a Power BI or Tableau dashboard; IT applicants an example of automating a manual task. Third, make the resume easy to screen. Put your anticipated graduation date at the top, since Protective asks for it, and say whether you need housing in Birmingham. Protective publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Protective Life internship?

No. Summer 2026 is over, and those postings came down months ago. Summer 2027 is the open cycle: on October 5, 2026 Protective had eight programs live on its Lever board, running May 31 to July 30, 2027 in Birmingham. None states a deadline, but the process starts early, so apply now.

When do Protective Life internship applications open?

In the fall. Protective says it begins accepting applications in the fall, and its summer 2027 programs were posted between September 8 and 21, 2026, about eight months before the May 31 start. Expect summer 2028 programs around September 2027. Expressions of interest are welcome year-round.

How much do Protective Life interns make?

Protective publishes it: $22 an hour for Actuarial, IT and Business Systems, and $21 an hour for the other five programs, for 40 hours a week. Over the May 31 to July 30 dates that's roughly $7,560 to $7,920 before tax, by our estimate. Paid, furnished housing is offered based on need.

Who can apply for a Protective Life internship?

Rising juniors and seniors are the target, and graduate students are also eligible. You must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program as of May 31, 2027. No GPA minimum or sponsorship policy is published. Majors range from accounting, finance and actuarial science to IT, marketing and communications.

What is the Protective Life interview process?

After you apply on Lever, qualified candidates get a 15-minute call with a recruiter, followed by one or two interviews with hiring managers. Protective warns that first contact can take several weeks because the program receives a lot of interest, so keep applying to other internships while you wait.

Do Protective Life actuarial interns need exams?

Not strictly. The 2027 Actuarial Summer Internship says completing at least one actuarial exam is highly preferred, not required. It also prefers experience with SQL, VBA, C++ or a similar language, along with Excel skills and a math, actuarial science or finance background. The actuarial program pays $22 an hour.

How long is the Protective Life internship?

The summer 2027 program runs May 31 to July 30, 2027, at 40 hours a week. Protective's own pages describe it as 8 or 9 weeks. All eight programs are based at the Birmingham, Alabama corporate office and include mentoring, training, networking with leaders and volunteer service.

Do Protective Life interns get full-time offers?

Protective doesn't publish a conversion rate. The only data point we found is a 2019 Reddit comment saying every intern the previous summer received a full-time offer, which is second-hand and dated. Treat the summer as a long interview and ask your manager about full-time openings before it ends.

Protective's eight summer 2027 programs are open now, and its process starts early. Apply this month, and build a project you can point to in interviews: a remote Externship gives you one in about 8 weeks.
