Last updated: October 2026
NPR pays every intern $20.00 an hour, runs a 28-week fall/winter semester, and has no summer internship right now. Each position is posted for about two weeks with its own deadline, and the 2026 page told students to visit the career portal "in early June." As of 16 October 2026, NPR's Greenhouse board lists 18 jobs and none is a general internship. In plain words: you apply in June 2027, you intern from fall 2027, a lead time of about three months to a September or October start (start dates are community-reported, not published by NPR). The summer 2024 and 2025 programs were cancelled, so don't wait for a summer posting.

What Is an NPR Internship?
An NPR internship is a paid, 28-week fall/winter placement at National Public Radio, the nonprofit media organization that produces news, information and music programming in partnership with hundreds of independent public radio stations. The official internship page lists work such as researching sources for the newsroom, assisting audio production, editing web pages, researching for shows, pitching ideas, managing social media, building embedded graphics and coding survey data. Interns in this program work across NPR's departments, not just the newsroom. NPR's member stations are independent and run their own internships, which this page doesn't cover.

When Do NPR Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
NPR's internship runs on a short lead with one cohort a year. The 2026 internship page announced a fall 2026 program and told students to visit the career portal in early June. Each position is posted for about two weeks, and the fall/winter semester is 28 weeks. Archived copies of the same page show a gap before that: the summer 2024 and summer 2025 programs were cancelled, and the program was reinstated for fall 2025. We found two cycles (2025 and 2026), so the June 2027 expectation for fall 2027 is low to medium confidence.
General internships are closed. The fall 2026 positions posted in June and have closed, and NPR's board lists 18 jobs, none a general internship. Two law-student externships in the Office of the General Counsel are open until 18 October 2026.
Build what postings ask for. NPR's page names writing samples, design portfolios and a cover letter per role, and says you can apply to several internships and should name each cover letter file for its role. Have two or three writing or design samples ready before June.
Fall/winter 2027 internships expected to post, projected from 2026 (the page said early June) and 2025 (the reinstatement was announced by early July). Each posting stays open about two weeks, and NPR takes no applications after the deadline.
Interviews and offers. NPR publishes no interview format. In 2021, applicants on Reddit reported a mid-July deadline, a manager call, a team video interview and an offer in roughly a week, but that was a different cycle.
The 28-week fall/winter semester, typically 40 hours a week at $20.00 an hour. A 2025 intern reported a September or October start, with teams rotating about every three months. Start dates are community-reported.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
NPR is a hard-deadline employer. Each posting runs about two weeks, and the page is blunt that once a deadline has passed NPR will no longer accept applications. With one cohort a year posting in a narrow June window, missing it means waiting a full year. NPR does say you may apply to the next cycle if you're still eligible, which is why eligibility lasting up to 12 months after graduation matters. Watch the board from the start of June and apply early in each posting's two weeks.
Which NPR Internship Programs Should You Target?
NPR's internship program covers several departments in one fall/winter cohort, and each department posts its own roles. The Office of the General Counsel runs a separate, for-credit legal externship track.
| Program / Track | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newsroom and show research | Researching sources, research for shows, pitching ideas | 28 wks | Per posting; writing sample where asked |
| Audio production | Assisting audio production | 28 wks | Per posting |
| Digital, social and graphics | Editing web pages, social media, embedded graphics for digital platforms | 28 wks | Design portfolio for graphics roles; per posting |
| Data and survey work | Coding survey data | 28 wks | Per posting |
| Office of the General Counsel externships (law students) | Copyright, fair use and audio licensing; general legal externship for spring or summer 2027 | Spring or summer 2027; summer is 12 wks, 40 hrs/wk | 2L or 3L for the copyright externship; for course credit |
The general internship list is on NPR's career portal. The two legal externships close on 18 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and NPR says it offers legal externships throughout the year.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
NPR's internship page sets these rules:
• Student status: current students in an accredited degree program, or graduates of no more than 12 months before the internship starts. High school students aren't accepted.
• Work authorization: you must be authorized to work in the US. Interns on remote-flexible roles must live in the US for the whole internship.
• Documents: a resume, a cover letter and, where the posting asks, writing samples or a design portfolio. You may apply to more than one internship.
• Legal externships: the copyright externship is for a 2L or 3L, and fall and spring externships must be for course credit arranged with your law school.
• GPA: not published.

Do You Need a Journalism Major?
NPR doesn't say so. Its page says every department contributes to NPR's stories and invites applicants with a range of skill sets, and the postings include digital graphics, survey coding and audio production. What the page does stress is the documents: the work sample or portfolio each posting names matters more than a major.
What Skills Does NPR Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
No general internship posting is live, so there are no job descriptions to count and no skills chart. What NPR publishes is a task list and a document list. Tasks include researching sources, editing web pages, pitching ideas, social media, embedded graphics and coding survey data. The documents are a cover letter for each role, and writing samples or a design portfolio where the posting asks. The internship page also links NPR's free training site, including a guide to writing a cover letter for a journalism job or internship.
Note: Skill chart not shown: NPR has no live general intern postings on 16 October 2026 (its Greenhouse board lists 18 jobs, none a general internship), so there are no job descriptions to count. This section will add a chart when the 2027 postings appear.

For NPR applicants: NPR's board lists no general internship on 16 October 2026 and its fall/winter program posts in a narrow June window, so use the months before then to build writing or design samples and apply elsewhere.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
NPR names writing, design, social and audience skills but not tools, so this table pairs its stated tasks with open remote Externships that build matching evidence.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Audience research and social content | NPR page: "engaging with our social media channels" | Pinterest Gen Z Consumer Behavior |
| Storytelling and creative strategy | NPR page: "pitching ideas" | Beats by Dre Creative Advertising Strategy |
| Digital product thinking | NPR page: "designing and developing embedded graphics for our digital platforms" | BeReal Product Management |
| Audience data and analytics | NPR page: "coding survey data" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
None of these replaces a posting's own requirements. They give you finished, remote project work to point to when NPR's June postings open.
What Is the NPR Application and Interview Process Like?
NPR describes the application steps on its internship page:
1. Visit the career portal in early June. Read the full description and requirements of each position on the NPR Career Portal.
2. Upload your documents. A resume, a cover letter and any writing samples or portfolio the posting asks for. If you apply to several internships, name each cover letter file for its role.
3. Apply inside the window. Each position is posted for about two weeks and shows its deadline. NPR takes no applications after it.
4. Interviews: NPR doesn't publish its format. In 2021, applicants on Reddit reported a quick manager call, then a video interview with the team, then an offer.
5. Offer and start: the semester is 28 weeks, and interns work onsite, remotely or hybrid, set by the team.
Many NPR member stations run their own internships, so check your local station's website as well.
What Students on Reddit Say
Two first-hand threads, one from 2025 and one from 2021, which was a different cycle.
A 2025 intern offer-holder described the internship as full-time, about seven months, remote on a podcast and digital engagement team, rotating to a new team every three months. A former NPR staffer replied that interns often finish their degrees alongside it and that school-schedule accommodations are made within reason but vary by team.
In a 2021 fall thread, applicants said the deadline was mid-July and that NPR moves fast once it calls: a short manager call, a video interview with the team the next day, and an offer within about a week. One HR applicant described a short tiebreak call with the HR director. That was the 2021 cycle, not this one.
How Do You Stand Out for an NPR Internship?
NPR publishes no applicant counts or acceptance rate, so the advice follows its own page. First, have your documents ready before June. With a two-week window and a hard deadline, the writing sample or design portfolio can't be built after the posting goes up. Second, apply to more than one role. NPR says you may, and its cover letter guidance is to name each file for its role. Third, show the format, not just interest. A pitched story idea, a short audio edit or a data-coded survey tells a team you can do the task on the posting. If you finish your degree in the next year, remember eligibility runs up to 12 months after graduation.

FAQ
Can I still apply for an NPR internship in 2026?
Not for the general program. The fall 2026 positions posted in June and have closed, and NPR's board lists no general internship on 16 October 2026. Two law-student externships close on 18 October 2026. The next general cohort is fall 2027, expected to post around June 2027.
Does NPR offer summer internships?
Not currently. NPR's summer 2024 and summer 2025 programs were cancelled, per archived copies of its internship page, and the current page lists only the fall/winter semester. Don't wait for a summer 2027 posting. Law students can look at NPR's separate legal externships, which include a summer track.
How much do NPR interns make?
NPR's internship page says all interns are paid $20.00 an hour. NPR doesn't offer transportation or housing assistance. The fall/winter semester is 28 weeks and typically 40 hours a week, though part-time roles are flagged in the posting. Legal externships in fall and spring are for course credit.
When do NPR internship applications open?
Expected around June 2027 for the fall 2027 semester, based on the 2026 page, which told students to visit the career portal in early June. Each position is posted for about two weeks with its own deadline. NPR hasn't announced 2027 dates, so treat June as a projection.
Can I intern at NPR remotely?
Yes. NPR says its internship program is offered onsite, fully remote or hybrid, as each team decides. Remote-flexible interns must live in the US for the whole internship. NPR is headquartered in Washington DC, and other listings show New York, Culver City and remote roles. Check the posting.
Who is eligible for an NPR internship?
Current students in an accredited degree program, or graduates within 12 months of the internship start. NPR doesn't accept high school students, and interns must be authorized to work in the US. No GPA is published. Individual postings may add requirements such as a cover letter, writing sample or design portfolio.
Are there NPR internships for law students?
Yes, as for-credit externships in the Office of the General Counsel. The current spring and summer 2027 openings close on 18 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, and the copyright externship is for 2Ls and 3Ls. NPR says it offers legal externships throughout the year, so more may follow.
Do local public radio stations offer internships?
Yes, separately from NPR. NPR's page says many member stations offer internships of their own and tells students to check their local station's website. Stations are independent employers with their own dates, pay and eligibility, so this page's NPR deadlines and the $20.00 rate don't apply to them.
General NPR internships are closed today, and the fall 2027 cohort is expected to post around June 2027. Have your writing or design samples ready, watch the NPR Career Portal, and use the wait to build proof: a remote Externship gives your application a finished project to point to.
