Nokia is hiring US students right now, and the biggest group isn't summer. Its own job system listed 17 US student requisitions on 25 October 2026: 15 co-ops, most starting in January 2027, and 2 summer 2027 internships that run 10 weeks from June to August. Nokia says it runs three hiring cycles a year (terms start in January, May and September) and posts 4 to 6 months ahead. In plain words, you apply during 2026 to intern in summer 2027, but the nearer door is a January 2027 co-op. Every req posts an hourly pay range, though the ranges are wide. This guide covers Nokia's US student roles only; the company runs separate student programs in other countries.
What Is a Nokia Internship?
A Nokia internship in the US is a paid summer internship or semester co-op at Nokia, the Finnish telecom and networking company, hired through its own job system. The summer internship runs 10 weeks, while co-ops run year-round and can last four to 18 months, per the US students page. Most of the live roles are in photonics, optical networking and chip design in Sunnyvale, San Jose, Allentown and New York, with research hardware co-ops at the Bell Labs site in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Nokia also lists Bell Labs research internships that apply through the same board.

When Do Nokia Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
Nokia posts student roles in waves tied to its three start dates. Its own page says it posts 4 to 6 months before a term starts and reviews applications on a rolling basis. The January 2027 co-ops went up between 4 September and 16 October 2026, about 2.5 to 4 months before a January start. The two summer 2027 internships were posted on 13 October 2026, about 7.5 months before a June start, and more are likely to follow. We couldn't recover Nokia's summer 2026 posting dates from its own pages, so the later dates below are projections from its stated rule.
Applications are open right now for 15 co-ops, most starting in January 2027, and 2 summer 2027 internships. Nokia reviews on a rolling basis, so apply to each role that fits this week.
Interviews and offers for January co-ops. Nokia's page says candidates typically have one 30-minute virtual interview, sometimes with a basic technical test, then hear from a campus talent partner about the offer.
Co-ops start, mostly four months to April or May 2027. Expected: roles for the May 2027 term post around this time, since Nokia posts 4 to 6 months ahead.
Expected: more summer 2027 interns and September 2027 co-ops post between about March and May 2027, following the same 4 to 6 month rule.
Summer interns work 10 weeks between June and August 2027. Nokia doesn't publish a conversion rate; summer 2028 postings are expected from about autumn 2027.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Nokia's reqs are rolling: the US students page says applications are reviewed throughout the year and that the recruiting cycle keeps running for a few months after a role is posted. None of the 17 reqs shows a closing date, so the posting date is the only clock you can see. The board turns over quickly: one co-op that was live on 17 October (an AI-Agent Development Co-op in San Jose) was gone by 25 October, and a January co-op has to be filled before the term starts. If a req fits your degree level and school year, apply within days.
Which Nokia Internship Programs Should You Target?
These are the groups of US student roles live on 25 October 2026.
| Track | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer internships (Sunnyvale CA, Allentown PA) | PIC process integration; optoelectronics test mechanical development | 10 weeks, June–Aug 2027 | Data analysis, SPC, SQL and Python, mechanical systems |
| Photonics and optical co-ops (San Jose, Sunnyvale, Allentown, New York, Murray Hill) | Optoelectronics and photonic test, optical systems, optical test | 4 months from Jan 2027; some 6–12 months | Optics, test automation, statistics, Python or LabVIEW |
| Silicon and hardware co-ops (San Jose, Sunnyvale, Murray Hill) | ASIC physical design, mixed-signal circuits, hardware development, mechanical packaging | 4 to 8 months | Circuit design, CAD, simulation |
| AI and software co-ops (Sunnyvale) | AI engineering, AI R&D, AI-assisted software development | 4 months, Jan–May 2027 | Machine learning, Python, software tools |
| Business co-ops (Raleigh NC, Dallas TX) | Customer engineering; legal and compliance | 3 to 4 months | Communication, analysis |
Filter the job system to the United States and read each req's duration line, since several co-ops don't give a year in the title.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Nokia sets eligibility per req. These come from the 17 live US student reqs.
• Enrollment: every req asks for a current student, and most name an accredited US school. The two summer internships ask for a bachelor's candidate or higher.
• Degree level: 10 of 17 accept bachelor's students. Seven ask for a master's or PhD student, including most of the photonics and AI co-ops in San Jose and Sunnyvale.
• Majors: role-specific, such as electrical or computer engineering, physics, materials, chemical or mechanical engineering, computer science, and business or law for the Dallas co-op.
• Work authorization: only one req (the AI-assisted software development co-op) says there's no visa sponsorship or relocation help; the others are silent. One Murray Hill PhD co-op says it's only for candidates from outside the US.
• GPA: none of the 17 reqs states a GPA floor.

Do I Need a Master's or PhD?
Not for every role. Both summer 2027 internships and 8 of the 15 co-ops accept bachelor's students, such as the Allentown optoelectronics co-op and the Murray Hill hardware co-op. The seven that ask for graduate students are mostly the most specialized photonics, chip-design and AI roles. One commenter who said they interned at Nokia in 2023 reported no GPA cutoff, though that's a single account.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each row maps a skill from Nokia's live reqs to a remote Externship that produces a finished project.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Python and SQL | PIC Process Integration Intern: "Nice to have: Experience with SQL and Python" | Breaking Games SQL & Database Architecture |
| Data analysis and statistics | PIC Process Integration Intern: "Experience using software tools to analyze data and draw meaningful insights" | ARCeH Data Analytics, Health Outcomes |
| Connected devices and test automation | Photonic Integrated Circuits Test Co-op: "software programming and test automation"; "work with test instruments, hardware, and software integration" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
None of these Externships is affiliated with Nokia, and none covers photonics, chip design or optical hardware, so they only build the software and data side of these roles. Most run about 8 weeks, so one started in November can finish around a January co-op start.
What Is the Nokia Application and Interview Process Like?
Nokia publishes a short process on its US students page, and we've added what the reqs show.
1. Apply on the job system. Set the location to United States and apply to each role that fits. Nokia says you can apply to multiple roles and be evaluated against each.
2. Interview. Candidates typically have one 30-minute virtual interview with the hiring team, and technical roles may add a basic technical test.
3. Offer. A campus talent partner contacts successful candidates about the offer process, and your status is visible in the candidate portal.
4. Timing. Nokia says to apply 4 to 6 months before the term you want and that it reviews applications on a rolling basis.
Nokia doesn't publish how many applicants it receives or how many students it takes each term.
What Students on Reddit Say
Reddit threads on Nokia internships are few and dated, so treat these two as color, not a rulebook.
A graduate student who landed a Bay Area Nokia internship offer said they couldn't answer every question in the interview and still got the offer. A commenter agreed that explaining your thought process and getting along with the interviewers counts for more than a perfect answer.
When a second-year student asked whether to include a transcript with a Nokia application, a commenter who said they interned at Nokia the year before said there didn't seem to be a GPA cutoff. Others guessed the transcript mainly confirms you're enrolled.
How Do You Stand Out for a Nokia Internship or Co-op?
First, pick the door that fits your degree level: 10 of 17 roles accept bachelor's students, so don't skip them because you assume a graduate degree is needed. Second, show hands-on proof tied to the group. For test and photonics roles that means lab or instrument experience and some Python or LabVIEW, and for AI roles it means a model or agent you've built. Third, explain your thinking clearly in the short interview, since Nokia keeps it to one 30-minute round. Nokia doesn't publish applicant counts or a conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Nokia internship?
No. Summer 2026 is over, and Nokia's job system shows no summer 2026 roles. What is open on 25 October 2026 is 15 co-ops, mostly starting in January 2027, and 2 summer 2027 internships that run 10 weeks. Nokia reviews applications on a rolling basis, so apply soon.
When do Nokia summer 2027 internship applications open?
They're already open. Two summer 2027 internships were posted on 13 October 2026, in Sunnyvale and Allentown. Nokia says it posts student roles 4 to 6 months before the term starts, so more summer 2027 roles are likely to appear through the spring, though Nokia hasn't confirmed dates.
How much does Nokia pay interns and co-ops?
Each req posts an hourly range, and the ranges are wide. The Sunnyvale summer intern lists $23.55 to $73.25, the Allentown summer intern lists $22.25 to $35.75, and Murray Hill hardware co-op lists $20.10 to $29.50. Nokia doesn't say where in the band offers fall.
What is the difference between a Nokia internship and a co-op?
Nokia says an internship is a work experience program offered in the US in the summer for 10 weeks. A co-op combines academic study with work experience, runs year-round and can last four to 18 months. Most live roles are co-ops that start in January 2027.
Do I need a master's or PhD to intern at Nokia?
Not always. Ten of the 17 live US student reqs accept bachelor's students, including both summer internships. Seven ask for a master's or PhD student, mostly in photonics, chip design and AI. Check the education line on each req, because Nokia sets it role by role.
What is the Nokia internship interview like?
Nokia says candidates typically have one 30-minute virtual interview with employees or the hiring manager. Technical roles may include a basic technical test. After that, a campus talent partner contacts successful candidates about the offer. Nokia doesn't publish more detail on rounds or question types.
Where are Nokia's US internships and co-ops located?
The 17 live roles are in Sunnyvale and San Jose, California, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Murray Hill, New Jersey, New York, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Dallas, Texas. Fourteen are listed as onsite and three as hybrid. None of the live roles is fully remote.
Does Nokia sponsor visas for interns?
Mostly it's not stated. One co-op, AI-assisted software development, says no visa sponsorship or relocation help is available, and the other 16 reqs are silent. Every req asks for a current student at an accredited school, usually in the US, so international students should confirm with a recruiter.
Nokia's January co-ops and summer 2027 internships are open now and reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply this week, and if you want a finished project to discuss, a remote Externship can wrap up before a January start.
