Last updated: October 2026
MGIC, the Milwaukee company that pioneered modern private mortgage insurance in 1957, hires its summer interns in winter. Its 2026 Data Science Intern posting went up on January 27 and closed on April 20, and its reinsurance internship came down on April 17. On October 5, 2026 MGIC's Workday job board listed 11 openings, all experienced roles, with no internships. In plain words: you apply during 2027, from about late January, and you intern in summer 2027.
Two details are worth knowing now. The 2026 data science and reinsurance postings listed a pay range of $37,830 to $56,750 a year, and the data science role was open only to freshmen and sophomores.
What Is a MGIC Internship?
A MGIC internship is a paid summer program at the Milwaukee Home Office of MGIC Investment Corporation (NYSE: MTG), whose main subsidiary, Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation, sells private mortgage insurance that lets lenders offer low-down-payment home loans. MGIC says its internships aim to recruit "a wider and more diverse slate of talent" and build "a talent pipeline for ourselves" while strengthening the southeastern Wisconsin workforce. In 2026 interns joined MiLo Labs, MGIC's data science team, and its pricing, reinsurance and data engineering teams. MGIC's postings say it has helped more than 14 million people buy homes sooner than they otherwise could.

When Do MGIC Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
MGIC runs one summer intake on a short lead. In 2026 the Data Science Intern posting went up January 27 and closed April 20, the reinsurance role came down April 17, and a data engineering role first appeared April 14. In 2025 the pricing internship came down May 8. So applications for summer 2027 are expected from about late January to April 2027, roughly four months before the summer starts. Roles post at different times, so keep checking through the spring.
Applications for summer 2027 aren't open yet. On October 5, 2026 all 11 openings on MGIC's board were experienced roles. This window is when you build the proof.
Set a Workday job alert, sharpen SQL and Python, and if you're aiming for pricing, book or start studying for your first actuarial exam.
Summer 2027 roles are expected to post, based on the 2026 Data Science posting going up January 27. Apply the week each role appears; later roles may have a shorter runway.
Roles are expected to come down; in 2026 they closed April 17 to 20. Interviews and offers fall in this stretch.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
MGIC's roles stay up longer than many, but not all of them. The 2026 Data Science posting ran almost 12 weeks, from January 27 to April 20, which points to rolling hiring inside a winter-to-spring window. Later roles get less time: a data engineering internship first appeared April 14 and the reinsurance role came down April 17. No posting states a deadline, and the team keeps reviewing as applications arrive. Apply the week a role appears so you're in the first review, not the last.
Which MGIC Internship Programs Should You Target?
MGIC posts each internship as its own role. These are the 2026 roles we could confirm; the 2027 list isn't posted yet.
| Role (2026) | Team | Who can apply | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Science Intern | MiLo Labs, MGIC's data science team | Freshmen and sophomores in CS, statistics, data science or STEM | SQL; R, Python, Java or C; Git |
| Pricing Intern | Pricing Implementation and Actuarial teams | Actuarial science, math, statistics or quantitative majors | One actuarial exam passed or in study; Python; SQL |
| Reinsurance Intern | Reinsurance accounting | Accounting, finance or business analytics majors | GAAP, financial statements, SOX; Excel |
| Data Engineer Intern | Data engineering | Not readable (posting closed) | Not readable (posting closed) |

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
These rules come from the 2026 and 2025 postings; each role sets its own:
• Class year: the 2026 Data Science role asked for a "current undergraduate student in your freshman or sophomore year". Other postings we read named no class year.
• Major: CS, statistics, data science or STEM for data science; actuarial science, math or statistics for pricing; accounting, finance or business analytics for reinsurance.
• Exams: pricing interns need "at least one actuarial exam" completed, or active study for the first.
• Location: on-site at the downtown Milwaukee campus, full time for the summer.
• GPA and sponsorship: not stated on the postings we read.

Does MGIC Have a GPA Cutoff?
None of the three postings we read names a GPA. The harder gates are role-specific: the freshman-or-sophomore rule on data science, the actuarial exam on pricing and the accounting basics on reinsurance. A junior or senior should look at the pricing and reinsurance roles rather than data science, if the 2027 postings keep the same rules.

Which summer are you applying for?
Recruiting timelines differ by class year, so we compare you with the right group.
Which group is your school closest to?
Firms recruit on campus in tiers. We match you against admits from schools like yours.
Is your major finance, economics, accounting or business?
Math and statistics count too. Major is not a hard filter, but it shifts how much your coursework has to prove.
How many internships, externships or research positions have you held so far?
Count anything with a real employer, mentor or principal investigator attached. Retail and food service do not count.
Has any of that experience been finance-related?
Banking, PE or VC, corporate finance, wealth management, equity research, accounting or consulting. Any size of firm counts.
Are you in a finance club, investment fund or case competition team?
Campus clubs are how most admits get their first deal and modelling reps.

What Skills Does MGIC Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
All three MGIC postings we read ask for communication and analytical skills. Data science adds SQL, a programming language such as R, Python, Java or C, and Git. Pricing adds Python, SQL and actuarial exam progress, plus learning MGIC's rate engines. Reinsurance adds GAAP, financial statements, SOX and Excel for journal entries and reconciliations.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each MGIC skill below maps to a remote Externship you can finish before late January.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative analytics on real data | Data Science: "conduct and design quantitative analytics utilizing both structured and unstructured data" | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
| SQL and data structure | Data Science and Pricing: experience with SQL | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Financial analysis and reconciliation | Reinsurance: variance analysis, reconciliations and monthly reports | Attronica Financial Planning & Analysis and Private Company Valuation |
| Modeling for pricing decisions | Pricing: "contribute to price changes" with the Actuarial team | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
The closest match is SQL: both the data science and pricing postings ask for it, so a finished database project helps on either track.
What Is the MGIC Application and Interview Process Like?
MGIC doesn't publish its interview steps, and we found no dated first-hand account of its intern interviews. What the postings show:
1. Set an alert. Create a Workday job alert for "intern" on the MGIC board before late January.
2. Apply role by role. Each internship is its own posting with its own class-year and major rules.
3. Check the gates. Freshman or sophomore for data science, an actuarial exam for pricing, accounting basics for reinsurance.
4. Interviews. Format isn't published. Be ready to walk through a SQL or Python project, and for pricing, to talk about your exam progress.
5. Offer. Expected after roles close in April, ahead of the summer.

What People on Reddit Say
No Reddit thread discusses MGIC's internship, and Indeed lists no intern reviews. What Reddit does show is MGIC's reputation in the mortgage industry and in Milwaukee.
Loan officers looking for income-calculation training pointed to MGIC's free library of recorded and live classes, calling it a little dry but full of very useful information.
When a data analyst moving to Milwaukee asked which local employers to consider beyond the big names, one reply simply suggested MGIC.
How Do You Stand Out for a MGIC Internship?
Three moves. First, apply early in the window. Roles post from late January and close in April, so an alert and a ready resume put you in the first review. Second, match the role to your year. Freshmen and sophomores had a rare opening in data science in 2026; pricing wants exam progress, and reinsurance wants accounting basics. Third, learn what mortgage insurance does. MGIC's postings open with how private mortgage insurance makes low-down-payment loans possible, and its free lender training pages are an easy way to learn the vocabulary. MGIC publishes no applicant count, class size or conversion rate.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 MGIC internship?
No. The summer 2026 roles closed in April 2026. Summer 2027 isn't open yet either: on October 5, 2026 MGIC's job board had 11 openings and none were internships. Expect summer 2027 roles from about late January 2027, and set a Workday job alert now.
When do MGIC summer 2027 internships open?
Expected from about late January to April 2027. In 2026 the Data Science Intern posting went up January 27 and closed April 20, the reinsurance role closed April 17, and a data engineering role first appeared April 14. Apply in February for the widest choice.
How much do MGIC interns make?
The 2026 Data Science and Reinsurance postings both listed a pay range of $37,830 to $56,750 a year. Worked out over a full-time 2,080-hour year, that's about $18 to $27 an hour; MGIC didn't publish an hourly figure. Postings also mention a pay-for-performance bonus.
Can freshmen apply for MGIC internships?
For some roles, yes. The 2026 Data Science Intern posting asked for a current undergraduate in their freshman or sophomore year, which is rare for a data science internship. Other postings named no class year, so juniors and seniors should look at pricing and reinsurance.
Where are MGIC internships located?
At MGIC's Home Office on its downtown Milwaukee campus. The pricing posting required full-time hours on-site throughout the summer, and the reinsurance role was listed as in-office. We found no remote or hybrid MGIC internships in the 2025 or 2026 cycles, so plan to live near Milwaukee.
What do MGIC pricing interns need?
An undergraduate major in actuarial science, math, statistics or another quantitative field, and at least one actuarial exam passed or active study for the first one. The posting also asked for Python, SQL, Microsoft Office and strong communication, analytical and time-management skills.
Does MGIC sponsor visas or require a GPA for interns?
Neither is stated on the MGIC intern postings we read, so ask the recruiter before applying if either affects you. The requirements the postings do state are role-specific: class year for data science, an actuarial exam for pricing and accounting basics for reinsurance.
What does MGIC do?
MGIC sells private mortgage insurance, which protects lenders when a borrower defaults and lets them offer home loans with low down payments. Based in Milwaukee since 1957, MGIC Investment Corporation is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as MTG and works with lenders across the country.
MGIC's summer 2027 roles are expected from about late January 2027. Use the months before then: a remote Externship gives you a finished SQL or analytics project to show when the roles post.
