Hitachi's US internships sit inside separate businesses, and two of them are hiring for summer 2027 right now. On 3 October 2026 Hitachi's shared US Workday board carried 30 current intern and co-op roles: 13 at Hitachi Energy, the grid and transformer business, all titled "2027 Summer" across seven US sites; 13 at Hitachi Rail in Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Hawaii, hiring for May to August 2027; plus four at smaller units, including a research internship at Hitachi America's Santa Clara lab listed at $50 to $55 an hour. Hitachi Energy's internship is a 12-week, full-time, paid program, and one application is matched across roles. In plain words: you apply during fall 2026, you intern in summer 2027. Hitachi, Ltd. reported revenue of 10,586.7 billion yen for the fiscal year ended March 2026 and about 290,000 employees worldwide, according to its own US job postings.

Externships are short, remote projects where you finish real work for a real company, most running 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week. The Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship builds the connected-infrastructure security skills behind Hitachi Rail's network and signalling roles, and the Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics Externship fits Hitachi Energy's plant, HR and supply chain internships. What Is a Hitachi Internship?

A Hitachi internship in the US is a paid placement with one of the Hitachi group's American businesses, most often Hitachi Energy USA (transformers, grid equipment and power consulting) or Hitachi Rail STS USA (signalling systems for metros and light rail). Hitachi Energy's reqs describe a full-time, paid "12-week learning journey", with "opportunities available across all our major USA locations", and say the internships are designed "first and foremost" as a learning experience. You apply to the one posting closest to your major and are considered for several roles. Hitachi Rail's interns get mentorship and intern events while working on signalling design, reliability analysis, procurement, quality and test engineering. Smaller units also post: Wright Industries, a Nashville automation integrator; Hitachi America's R&D lab in Santa Clara; and Hitachi Vantara's manufacturing site in Norman, Oklahoma.

When Do Hitachi Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Hitachi's two big US intern businesses both opened early. Hitachi Energy posted its first "2027 Summer" roles in Raleigh on 22 August 2026 and the rest of its plant roles on 1 September, about 9 months before a late-May or June start. Hitachi Rail followed between 10 September and 1 October 2026 for internships that run May to August 2027, a lead of roughly 7.5 to 8 months. We couldn't recover last cycle's Hitachi Energy open date, so we can't say whether this calendar is drifting; the summer 2028 dates below are a low-confidence projection from this single cycle.

Now · October 2026YOU ARE HEREROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

Applications for summer 2027 are open right now: 13 Hitachi Energy roles in seven towns and 13 Hitachi Rail roles, five of them added on 1 October in Batesburg-Leesville, SC and Pearl City, HI. Apply to one Hitachi Energy posting closest to your major.

Apply first, then add a project alongside it: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship suits Rail network and signalling applicants, and the Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture Externship suits software and data applicants.
October–December 2026

Recruiters review the pooled Hitachi Energy applications and match students across roles at each site. Hitachi doesn't publish its interview steps, so prepare for both behavioral questions and a technical conversation about your major.

January–April 2027EXPECTED

Remaining roles fill on a rolling basis, and new Rail roles may still appear, as five did on 1 October. Keep a Workday alert running rather than assuming the board is final.

May–June 2027

Hitachi Rail and Wright Industries internships start in May 2027 and run through August. Hitachi Energy's 12-week internships start around late May or June; the start date isn't published.

Summer 2027 to summer 2028EXPECTED

Applications for summer 2028 expected around August to September 2027 if this calendar repeats (low confidence, one cycle observed). Hitachi doesn't publish a return-offer rate.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

None of Hitachi's current reqs states a closing date, so this is a rolling process: roles stay up until they're filled. That cuts both ways. Hitachi Energy pools applicants, so an early application is in front of recruiters while every seat at a plant is still open. Hitachi Rail moves faster: its Onboard Software Developer intern req, first listed in mid-September, had closed by 28 September and was reposted on 30 September, and two other Rail reqs are also reposts of earlier listings. If a role you want is live today, apply this week rather than waiting for a deadline that won't be printed.

Which Hitachi Internship Programs Should You Target?

Thirty current US roles fall into five groups. Hitachi Energy and Hitachi Rail are the two to target first.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Eligibility is set per business, and the reqs are short on detail:

• Work authorization: all 13 Hitachi Energy reqs say you must already have authorization to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States, which rules out sponsorship.

• Degree: Hitachi Energy wants students working toward a bachelor's or master's in the named field (engineering, business, HR, EHS).

• Graduation window: Hitachi Rail asks for current juniors or seniors at a four-year university graduating between December 2027 and May 2028 (Pittsburgh engineering roles) or December 2028 (South Carolina and Hawaii roles).

• Availability: Rail roles require 40 hours a week on site; Hitachi Energy plant roles are in person at the factory.

• Relocation: Hitachi Energy's reqs say it doesn't offer relocation.

• GPA: not stated in any of the 30 current reqs.

Should You Apply to More Than One Hitachi Energy Posting?

No. Every Hitachi Energy req says you only need to apply to one internship posting to be considered for multiple roles, and asks you to pick the one closest to your major. Choose your site deliberately instead: most Energy roles are at factories in small towns, and there's no relocation support.

What Skills Does Hitachi Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Hitachi's reqs list majors more than tools, so the skill picture comes from repeated phrases. Every Hitachi Energy req asks for "good conceptual and analytical thinking" and the ability to work across cultures. Rail roles add digital logic design, troubleshooting, quality systems, root cause analysis and SAP production planning. The research internship names power electronics and energy storage hardware. Teamwork and communication show up in most of the 30.

Hitachi Energy posted ahead of most of the market, so its plant roles have been competing for applicants since late August: if you want one, apply now rather than after you finish other applications.

A finished security or data project is the easiest way to give a recruiter something concrete when the req itself lists only your major.

What Is the Hitachi Application and Interview Process Like?

Hitachi doesn't publish its intern interview steps, but the reqs set out how applying works:

1. Pick one Hitachi Energy posting. Apply to the role closest to your major at the site you want; recruiters consider you for multiple roles.

2. Apply to each Rail, Wright or R&D req separately. These aren't pooled.

3. Check the details in the req. Rail roles list a graduation window and a 40-hour on-site week; Energy roles confirm the 12-week, full-time, paid format.

4. Interview. No US first-hand interview reports were available for Hitachi Energy or Hitachi Rail; prepare to explain one project from your major in technical detail and one teamwork story.

What the Community Says

Reddit has little on US Hitachi internships, so we pair one strong thread with an intern review from Indeed.

A fourth-year power student weighing a Hitachi Energy power systems consulting co-op against an MEP design role got a near-unanimous answer: take Hitachi. A utility engineer added that his utility contracts Hitachi for this kind of study work, and others said power studies are real engineering.

A Hitachi Energy intern in Raleigh described an immersive summer with friendly, helpful people, and suggested the company build a stronger path from internship to full-time offers across all its business units.

How Do You Stand Out for a Hitachi Internship?

First, choose your Hitachi Energy posting and site on purpose. Because one application is matched across roles, the posting you choose is your signal; a cover note that names the plant and why (transformers in Jefferson City, power consulting in Raleigh) helps the matching. Second, know the business you're applying to. Hitachi Energy builds grid equipment and runs power studies; Hitachi Rail designs signalling for metros and light rail. Mixing them up in an interview is an easy way to lose a recruiter. Third, apply to Rail early and check the graduation window before you do. Hitachi doesn't publish a return-offer rate, and one 2025 Raleigh intern review asked for a stronger internship-to-full-time pipeline, so ask about conversion during your interview.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Hitachi internship?

No. Summer 2026 internships are over and Hitachi is now hiring for summer 2027. Thirty US roles were open on 3 October 2026, including 13 Hitachi Energy "2027 Summer" internships and 13 Hitachi Rail roles for May to August 2027. Apply on Hitachi's Workday board now.

When do Hitachi summer 2027 internship applications open?

They're already open. Hitachi Energy posted its summer 2027 roles on 22 August and 1 September 2026, and Hitachi Rail posted between 10 September and 1 October 2026. Applications are rolling, so roles close when they're filled rather than on a printed date.

Do I have to apply to every Hitachi Energy posting?

No. Each Hitachi Energy req says one application to the posting closest to your major is enough to be considered for multiple roles. Hitachi Rail, Wright Industries and the R&D lab work differently, so apply to each of those reqs separately if more than one fits.

How long is a Hitachi internship?

Hitachi Energy's US summer internship is a 12-week, full-time, paid program. Hitachi Rail hires for May through August 2027 at 40 hours a week on site. The Hitachi America research internship in Santa Clara runs three to six months, and the Rail co-op uses 15-week rotations.

How much do Hitachi interns make?

Every role is paid, but most don't list a rate. Published rates are $50 to $55 an hour for the Hitachi America R&D internship in Santa Clara, $22 an hour for the Hitachi Rail role in Pearl City, Hawaii, and $20 an hour for Hitachi Vantara's QA internship in Oklahoma.

Do I need to be a US citizen?

No citizenship clause appears in the current reqs, but Hitachi Energy requires that you already have authorization to work for it in the United States, so it won't sponsor. Hitachi Rail reqs don't state an authorization rule; check with the recruiter if you'd need sponsorship.

Where are Hitachi internships located?

Hitachi Energy: Raleigh NC, Jefferson City MO, Alamo TN, South Boston and Bland VA, Crystal Springs MS and Mount Pleasant PA. Hitachi Rail: Pittsburgh PA, Batesburg-Leesville SC and Pearl City HI. Others sit in Nashville TN, Santa Clara CA and Norman OK. Hitachi Energy doesn't offer relocation.

Do Hitachi interns get full-time offers?

Hitachi doesn't publish a conversion rate for any of its US businesses. Its reqs describe the internships as learning experiences first, and one Raleigh intern review from 2025 asked for a stronger path from internship to full-time offers, so ask about it directly in your interview.

Hitachi's summer 2027 roles are open now. Apply first, then use the waiting time on a remote Externship so your interview has a finished project in it.
