Formula 1's own internship is one dated door, and it's in England. The Engineering and Technology Summer Internship Programme is a paid 8-week placement at the F1 Media and Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, Kent, running July and August 2027, and applications close on 30 October 2026. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027. It's the only internship among the 13 roles on F1's board as of 3 October 2026, and none of the US-based F1 organisations we checked that day (the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Haas F1's US base, Cadillac F1's Indiana site, parent Liberty Media) had an internship posted.
This guide covers F1's own programme, the team placements often confused with it, and what exists in the US today. For an engineering student entering their penultimate or final year, the UK programme is worth a look once the right-to-work question is settled.

F1's summer-2027 programme is open right now and closes on 30 October 2026, a hard deadline printed on the requisition. It's one engineering programme in Kent, England, not a US internship, so check your UK right-to-work position before you put time into the statement F1 asks for.
Externships are short, remote programs where you finish a real project for a real company, most of them 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week. The Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship puts you on connected sensor systems, close to the connectivity and sensing work F1's req names, and the Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture Externship builds the data handling that shows up in six of the nine F1 job descriptions we read. What Is a Formula 1 Internship?
A Formula 1 internship is a paid 8-week summer placement with Formula One Management, the company that runs the championship, working alongside engineers and technologists at its Biggin Hill technical campus. It isn't a team internship: Mercedes, Red Bull Racing or Cadillac hire for their own cars separately. F1 describes itself as a 750-strong team reaching more than 800 million fans in 180 territories.
The requisition says intern projects "may involve designing and testing systems, developing software, analysing data, exploring new technologies, or helping shape future connectivity, sensing, and simulation systems." F1's owner, Liberty Media, also commits in its annual report to offering "apprenticeships and internships across the business" for students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

When Do Formula 1 Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
There's no earlier F1 cycle to project from. We found no archived intern requisition on F1's Workday board (310 captured URLs searched), so 30 October 2026 is this year's published date, not a proven annual pattern. The summer-2027 req went live on 24 September 2026, about 9 months before the July 2027 start, which is the same lead-time band as big tech.
Team placements keep their own calendars. Cadillac F1's Vehicle Performance placement closed on 2 October 2026, and no placement roles remained on its board on 3 October. Mercedes-AMG's technical and operational placements for 2027–28 are closed; its Business Support placements open in November 2026.
Applications for summer 2027 are open right now and close on 30 October 2026. Confirm your UK right-to-work position, draft the statement F1 asks for, and submit well before the date. If you're not yet in your penultimate or final year, use the coming months to build proof for a later cycle.
Applications for summer 2027 close. The date comes from F1's own requisition, and there's no second F1 internship on the board to fall back on.
Interviews and offers for summer 2027 (F1 hasn't published dates). Its usual process is a video interview on MS Teams, then a task-based assessment in Kent or London. Mercedes' Business Support placements open in November 2026.
The 8-week internship at Biggin Hill, full time and on site. F1 doesn't publish a return-offer rate.
If F1 repeats this year's timing, applications for summer 2028 would open around September 2027. That's a projection from one cycle, so watch the board rather than the calendar.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
This one isn't rolling. The requisition prints "Application Deadline: 30th October 2026," which leaves 27 days from today, and there's no second F1 internship on the board to fall back on.
Treat the date as absolute. Beyond your details, the application asks for one thing: "your statement outlining your interests, experience and what excites you about engineering in Formula 1." That statement is your whole first impression, and it reads better after a week of drafts than after one late night.
Check eligibility before you write a word. The role is on site in Kent and the req doesn't mention visas or right to work, so a US student should put that question to F1's talent acquisition team first.
Which Formula 1 Internship Programs Should You Target?
F1 runs one internship. The rest of the sport's student hiring happens at the teams, as 12-month industrial placements, and a US reader needs to see both side by side.
| Programme | Focus | Duration | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 Engineering and Technology Summer Internship (Biggin Hill, UK) | Systems testing, software, data analysis, connectivity, sensing and simulation | 8 weeks, Jul–Aug 2027 | Open; closes 30 Oct 2026 |
| Mercedes-AMG F1 Business Support placements (Brackley, UK) | Business functions at the team | Year-long, end Jun 2027 to end Jul 2028 | Opens Nov 2026 (team's own page) |
| Mercedes-AMG F1 Technical and Operational placements | Engineering and operations at the team | Year-long, end Jun 2027 to end Jul 2028 | Closed for 2027–28 |
| Cadillac F1 Team placements (Silverstone, UK) | Vehicle performance and engineering | 12 months | Closed; Vehicle Performance req closed 2 Oct 2026 |
| US-based F1 organisations (Las Vegas GP, Haas US, Cadillac US) | n/a | n/a | 0 internship postings on 3 Oct 2026 |
F1's current openings sit at corp.formula1.com/careers. Mercedes publishes its placement dates on its industrial placements page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Everything below comes from F1's own summer-2027 requisition, read on 3 October 2026.
• Degree stage: "currently studying towards a STEM degree and entering their penultimate or final year of university." On a US four-year degree, that reads as rising juniors and rising seniors.
• Disciplines: mechanical, electronic and electrical, software engineering, computer science, data science and analytics, AI/machine learning, systems engineering, or a related STEM subject.
• GPA: no number. The req asks for "a strong academic foundation in their chosen discipline."
• Work authorisation: not stated. The programme is on site in Biggin Hill, so confirm your UK right-to-work position with F1 before applying.
• Level: undergraduates. The req is written for "undergraduate engineers."

Can a US Student Realistically Get In?
Possibly, but nothing on F1's side confirms it. The requisition is silent on visas, and F1 hasn't published how many interns it takes or where they study. Community reports are about the teams, not F1 itself: commenters on r/F1Technical describe some teams sponsoring placement students and others that won't.
Ask before you apply. There's no US-based route right now either: the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Haas F1's Kannapolis base, Cadillac F1's Fishers site and Liberty Media all had zero internship postings on 3 October 2026.
What Skills Does Formula 1 Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
F1's req names disciplines rather than tools, so we read every live engineering and technology job description on its board to see what the Biggin Hill teams actually use. Testing and fault-finding appears in six of nine, from "designing and testing systems" in the intern req to "rapid fault finding" in mechanical design. Engineering data shows up in six as well, whether that's race timing data, LiDAR survey data or a drawing database.
Technical documentation (drawings, schematics, operating procedures) is in six too. Software matters, but it isn't the whole story: only the intern req and the Data Architect role are software-first, while the rest lean on CAD, electrical design and broadcast distribution.
What Formula 1 looks for in interns

Method: full-text read of the 9 engineering and technology job descriptions live on F1's Workday board on 3 Oct 2026 (the summer-2027 internship req plus 8 full-time roles at the same Biggin Hill site; cargo, electrician, health-and-safety and coordinator roles excluded). Only one is an internship, so read this as what the teams interns join work on, not as an intern-only template.
How Is Demand for Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?

Build These Skills Before You Apply
Every skill in the chart maps to a remote Externship you can finish before or alongside your F1 application.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Networking, connectivity & sensing | Intern req: "helping shape future connectivity, sensing, and simulation systems" | Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense |
| Engineering data & databases | Data Architect, Design Quality Engineer and Sporting Systems reqs: timing, survey and drawing data | Breaking Games SQL Database Architecture |
| Software & AI | Intern req disciplines: Software Engineering, Computer Science, AI / Machine Learning | Wayfair n8n AI Agent Engineering |
| Data analysis | Intern req: "analysing data" | Breaking Games E-Commerce Data Analysis & Strategy |
F1's application rests on a statement about what excites you about engineering in Formula 1, and a finished project gives that paragraph something concrete to point at.
What Is the Formula 1 Application and Interview Process Like?
F1 publishes a general hiring outline rather than an intern-specific one, so read these steps as the usual F1 process, not a promise for this programme.
1. Apply on Workday. Submit through F1's careers board with the statement F1 requests about your interests, experience and what excites you about engineering in Formula 1. Deadline: 30 October 2026.
2. Video interview. F1's careers page says candidates "typically" have two interviews, the first on MS Teams.
3. Task-based assessment. The second is a task-based assessment at the Kent campus or the central London office. If you're shortlisted from the US, plan for a trip to England.
4. Offer. F1 hasn't published offer dates for summer 2027. The internship runs July and August 2027.
To prepare for the assessment, practise walking through one of your own engineering projects end to end, including what failed in testing and what you changed.
What Students on Reddit Say
These threads are about F1 teams and the sport in general rather than F1's own internship, so read them as context.
A self-described F1 team employee says about 90% of team roles aren't trackside, and office weeks run around 45 hours when it's quiet, 50 to 55 normally and close to 70 during car build. A US commenter in the same thread says internships feel hard to find from the States.
Opinions split on visas. Some say you need one before a team will look at you, others that teams sponsor. One poster has seen North American students on placements, and another says a Canadian FSAE teammate landed a Williams Advanced Engineering placement.
A commenter who interned at an F1 team as a computer science student says the sport is UK-centric and recruiters know UK universities, though sponsorship exists. Another says an FSAE teammate went to Aston Martin in summer 2026, but calls sophomore year a stretch.
How Do You Stand Out for a One-Programme Internship?
Three moves, all doable before 30 October.
First, aim your statement at the req's own project list. F1 names systems testing, software, data analysis, and connectivity, sensing and simulation. Pick one and tie it to something you've built.
Second, bring hands-on engineering. Formula SAE is the evidence Reddit commenters cite most for team placements, and a personal software, data or electronics project does the same job if your school doesn't have a team.
Third, show you know which F1 this is. Biggin Hill is a broadcast and race-technology campus, so a statement about aerodynamics reads like it was meant for a team. Knowing how timing data gets from a circuit to a TV graphic is much closer to this campus.
F1 doesn't publish an applicant count or a conversion rate, so nobody can tell you your odds.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Formula 1 internship?
No. Summer 2026 has already run, and F1's board carries no 2026 internship. What's open now is the summer-2027 Engineering and Technology Summer Internship Programme at Biggin Hill, Kent, which closes on 30 October 2026. F1 hasn't announced a summer-2028 window, so if you miss this one, watch the board from autumn 2027.
When do Formula 1 internship applications for summer 2027 close?
On 30 October 2026. The date is printed in F1's requisition as the application deadline, and the role went live on 24 September 2026. There's no rolling review after that date and no second F1 internship on the board, so submit your statement and application before the end of October.
Can US students get a Formula 1 internship?
Only by applying to the UK programme. F1's requisition doesn't state a work-authorisation rule, so confirm your UK right-to-work position with F1 first. On 3 October 2026, none of the US-based F1 organisations we checked, including the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Haas F1's US base, Cadillac F1's Indiana site and Liberty Media, had an internship posted.
Is the Formula 1 internship paid?
Yes. The requisition says "This is a paid internship programme," but F1 doesn't publish the amount, and we won't print an aggregator estimate in its place. Housing support isn't mentioned either, so ask about pay and relocation at interview, especially if you'd be travelling from the US to Kent for eight weeks.
Who is eligible for the F1 summer internship?
Undergraduates studying a STEM degree who are entering their penultimate or final year. F1 lists mechanical, electronic and electrical, software engineering, computer science, data science and analytics, AI and machine learning, and systems engineering, plus related subjects. There's no published GPA cutoff, only "a strong academic foundation" in your discipline.
Where is the Formula 1 internship, and how long is it?
It's at the F1 Media and Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, Kent, south-east of London. The programme lasts 8 weeks across July and August 2027, full time and on site, with no remote option listed. Interviews may also take place at F1's central London office, according to its careers page.
What's the difference between an F1 internship and an F1 team placement?
F1's internship is 8 weeks in summer with the company that runs the championship. Teams such as Mercedes and Cadillac hire 12-month industrial placements for their own cars, usually taken as a year out of a UK degree. Mercedes' 2027–28 placement runs from the end of June 2027 to the end of July 2028.
Does Formula 1 offer business or marketing internships?
Not for summer 2027 as of 3 October 2026. The only internship on F1's board is the engineering and technology programme. For business roles in the sport, Mercedes says its Business Support placements open in November 2026, though those are year-long UK placements rather than summer internships.
F1's door closes on 30 October 2026. Whichever cycle you aim for, a remote Externship gives your statement a finished engineering or data project to point at.
