Last updated: October 2026
First American, the Santa Ana title insurer founded in 1889, hires its undergraduate summer interns late. Its summer 2026 roles, from software engineering and data science to mortgage title operations and public affairs, went up between mid-February and April 2026 for a 10 to 12 week program running June to August. On October 5, 2026 its Workday job board had 221 openings and no undergraduate internships. In plain words: undergraduates apply around February to April 2027 and intern in summer 2027.
There's one exception. Law students can apply now: a summer 2027 commercial title underwriting internship in Chicago, for rising 2L and 3L students, went up on October 2, 2026 at $30 to $34 an hour.
What Is a First American Internship?
A First American internship is a paid, 10 to 12 week summer program at First American Financial Corporation (NYSE: FAF), a Santa Ana, California provider of title insurance, settlement services, real estate data and home warranties. Undergraduates are placed in a business function such as technology, data, marketing, HR, accounting or operations, and law students join a graduate track in title underwriting. The program adds executive presentations, industry seminars, career workshops and networking, and software interns present their project at an Intern Expo Day. First American reported $7.5 billion in 2025 revenue. It isn't First American Bank, First American Equipment Finance or First American Payment Systems, which are unrelated companies.

When Do First American Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
First American runs two calendars. The undergraduate program is short-lead: summer 2026 roles first appeared between February 18 and April 20, 2026, about 2 to 4 months before the June start, and came down between April 7 and May 27. So undergraduate applications for summer 2027 are expected from mid-February to April 2027. The law-student underwriting track moved earlier: its summer 2027 role posted October 2, 2026, about 8 months ahead, while last year's equivalent was still open in spring 2026. Off-season roles happen too: a fall 2026 software intern role posted in August and came down September 22.
Undergraduate applications for summer 2027 aren't open yet; this window is when you build the proof. Law students are the exception: the Chicago commercial title underwriting internship for summer 2027 is open now.
Set a Workday job alert for "intern", tidy your resume and pick the functions you want: tech and data roles were mostly remote in 2026.
Undergraduate applications for summer 2027 are expected to post, based on 2026 roles first appearing February 18 to April 20. Apply the week each role appears.
Roles come down as they fill; in 2026 they were removed between April 7 and May 27. Interviews and offers happen in this stretch.
The 10 to 12 week internship, June to August 2027, remote or in an office depending on the role. Summer 2028 undergraduate roles are expected around February to April 2028.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
First American's undergraduate roles behave like a rolling pool. No 2026 posting gave a deadline, yet every one we tracked came down between early April and late May. The first removals, marketing and public affairs on April 7 and 9, came about seven weeks after the earliest roles appeared. With only two to four months between posting and a June start, teams hire as they go. Apply the week a role appears rather than waiting for the rest of the list. Law students face the same logic now: the Chicago role states no closing date.
Which First American Internship Programs Should You Target?
First American posts each internship as its own role. These are the tracks seen in the 2026 cycle and the one role open for 2027.
| Track | Summer 2027 status | Where (2026 roles) | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technology and data (software engineering, data science, data engineering, AI, product, business systems) | Expected Feb to Apr 2027 | Mostly remote; some Santa Ana and Fort Mill, SC | Coding (C#, TypeScript, Python, SQL), data analysis, teamwork |
| Title and business operations | Expected Feb to Apr 2027 | Remote in CA; Idaho Falls, ID onsite | Microsoft Office, Excel, detail, customer focus |
| Marketing, social media and public affairs | Expected Feb to Apr 2027 | Santa Ana hybrid; remote in CA | Writing, content tools, research, organization |
| People analytics and HR | Expected Feb to Apr 2027 | Santa Ana | Data analysis, communication |
| Graduate Intern, Commercial Title Underwriting (law students) | Open now (posted Oct 2, 2026) | Chicago, IL | Legal research, real estate law, title and lien analysis |
Browse the Workday board or the early careers page, which lists undergraduate, graduate and part-time options separately. The "Flexible and Part-Time" option there is hourly work, not an internship.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
First American's rules come from its early careers page and each posting:
• Class year: the early careers page invites undergraduate "Sophomores & juniors". Some roles set their own rule: the 2026 Public Affairs role asked for juniors or seniors.
• Law track: "Currently enrolled in an accredited Law School" as a rising 2L or 3L.
• Major: role-specific. The software role required computer science or computer information systems; marketing asked for marketing, communications or business.
• GPA and sponsorship: not stated on the postings we read; ask the recruiter if either matters to you.
• Background check: postings say First American reviews criminal history after a conditional offer, because interns may handle confidential data or financial transactions.

Does First American Have a GPA Cutoff?
None of the five postings we read in full names a GPA. The firmer gates are class year, major on technical roles and, for the law track, rising 2L or 3L standing. The software posting also asks for prior exposure to good engineering practice through hackathons, design challenges, class projects or earlier internships.

What Is the First American Application and Interview Process Like?
First American doesn't publish its interview steps, and we found no dated first-hand account of the intern interviews. What the postings show:
1. Set an alert. Create a Workday job alert for "intern" on the First American board so you see roles the week they post.
2. Apply role by role. Each internship is its own posting with its own location and requirements.
3. Interviews. Format isn't published. For tech roles, be ready to talk through a project; the software posting asks for hackathon, class-project or internship experience.
4. Conditional offer and background check. Postings say a criminal-history review follows a conditional offer.
5. Project assignment. Software interns get their "unique mission refined before the start date, after an offer is extended and accepted", and present at an Intern Expo Day.

What People on Reddit Say
We found no Reddit thread about First American's internship program itself. The useful threads come from lawyers and paralegals discussing title work, which is relevant to the law-student track.
A commenter pointed a lawyer looking for a change toward commercial underwriting at the big title insurers, naming First American and Old Republic among others: many roles are fully remote, the work is interesting and the balance is good. Another said they work on the underwriting side.
Paralegals learning real estate closings were told that the major title companies, First American, Fidelity and Stewart among them, run online seminars on title topics that are worth attending even when they're above your level.
How Do You Stand Out for a First American Internship?
Three moves. First, be early in February. Undergraduate roles post over about two months and come down as they fill, so an alert matters more than a perfect cover letter. Second, bring a project. The software posting asks for hackathons, design challenges, class projects or earlier internships, and interns present their work at an Intern Expo Day, so a finished project you can explain is the strongest signal. Third, learn the business. First American sells title insurance and closing services; knowing what a title search and an escrow closing are puts you ahead in operations, data and law interviews. Free title-company seminars are an easy start. First American publishes no applicant count or conversion rate.

Expected from mid-February to April 2027. In 2026 the roles first appeared between February 18 and April 20 and came down between April 7 and May 27, for a June start. That's one tracked cycle, so set a Workday job alert now in case roles post earlier.

Are First American internships remote?

Yes. The Graduate Internship track takes rising 2L and 3L law students. The summer 2027 Commercial Title Underwriting role in Chicago covers legal research for underwriters, title, lien and foreclosure issues, policy forms and shadowing live transactions, at $30 to $34 an hour.
Who can apply to First American's undergraduate internships?

Does First American sponsor visas or require a GPA for interns?
Neither is stated on any of the First American intern postings we read, so ask the recruiter before applying if either affects you. Postings do say First American reviews criminal history after a conditional offer, because interns may handle confidential information or financial transactions.
Is First American the same as First American Bank?
No. First American Financial Corporation is the Santa Ana title insurance and settlement company. First American Bank, First American Equipment Finance and First American Payment Systems are separate, unrelated businesses, and job sites sometimes mix their listings together, so check the company name on each posting.
First American's undergraduate summer 2027 roles are expected from mid-February 2027, and law students can apply now. Use the months before then well: a remote Externship gives you a finished project to bring to the application.
