Last updated: October 2026
This guide covers Covenant Health in Knoxville, Tennessee, the community-owned East Tennessee system with 10 hospitals (not Covenant HealthCare in Michigan or the Covenant Health systems in Maine, Texas or Alberta). Covenant doesn't run a summer internship class. It hires students all year into paid, as-needed (PRN) jobs instead, and on 3 October 2026 its job board carried 17 live student roles: Student Nurse Associates at Parkwest and Fort Sanders, Respiratory Therapy Interns in Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Imaging Tech Students, and one corporate process-improvement intern.
None of these roles has a deadline, and six were posted in the last four weeks alone. So the plain-words version for summer 2027 is different from most companies: you don't wait for a spring posting, you apply now, and the job you start this fall is the one you'll still be working next summer.

Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern. Most run 8 weeks at 5–10 hours a week, so one fits around PRN shifts and classes. The Healthcare Operations Consulting Externship builds the process-improvement work Covenant's corporate intern does, and the TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics Externship gives clinical students hands-on health data experience. What Is a Covenant Health Internship?
A Covenant Health internship is usually a paid student job, not a summer program. The biggest track is the Student Nurse Associate (SNA): nursing students who take vitals, record intake and output, help with patient care and update the plan of care "under the supervision of a registered nurse." Respiratory therapy and radiography students get similar paid roles in their own departments, and business or engineering students occasionally get a corporate intern posting.
Covenant Health is a not-for-profit, community-owned system headquartered in Knoxville and the region's largest employer. Its own postings describe 10 hospitals, 1,500 affiliated physicians and more than two million patients and families served a year, and say it's the only East Tennessee health system named a Forbes "Best Employer" seven times.

When Do Covenant Health Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
There's no application season to wait for. Covenant files its student roles as PRN jobs, and each hospital unit posts its own requisition when it needs help. The 17 live on 3 October 2026 were posted anywhere from July 2025 to 29 September 2026, spread across every quarter with no cluster that looks like a wave. Six went up in September 2026 alone, and one student role that was live on 28 September (a Student Cardiac Sonographer) had already come down by 3 October. Applications for summer 2027 are therefore the same as applications today: the lead time is zero months, and the main risk is waiting.
Applications are open right now: 17 student roles across Parkwest, Fort Sanders, Oak Ridge and Lenoir City, plus a corporate intern in Knoxville. If you meet the enrollment requirement, apply this week.
Get CPR or BLS current, since every clinical posting lists it. Nursing students need junior or senior status and the fundamental clinical skills portion done, or finishing that semester.
Units keep posting and reposting PRN student roles. Check the board every couple of weeks and apply to new postings in the first week, since a role can come down within days.
Graduating nurses apply to new-graduate RN postings. Covenant enrolls every new-graduate RN it hires in its Nurse Residency Program, with no separate application.
Students hired this fall or winter keep working PRN shifts through the summer, with hours that flex around school. There's no summer start date to plan for.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
Rolling doesn't mean relaxed here. Covenant's student roles are PRN jobs that each unit posts when it needs help, and they come down when the unit hires: a Student Cardiac Sonographer posting that was live on 28 September was gone by 3 October, five days later. Because no posting has a deadline, the only way to miss one is to wait, so apply the week a role appears and apply to more than one unit. If you plan to work on a particular unit after you graduate, an SNA job there now is the most direct way in.
Which Covenant Health Internship Programs Should You Target?
These are the student roles on Covenant's board on 3 October 2026. Each one is a separate posting by a unit or department.
| Role | Who it's for | Live on 3 Oct 2026 | Key details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student Nurse Associate | Junior or senior nursing students with fundamental clinical skills done | 6 (Parkwest units, Fort Sanders Nephrology) | Patient care under an RN; CPR required; PRN, variable shifts |
| Respiratory Therapy Intern | Students in a CoARC-approved respiratory therapy program | 6 (Fort Sanders, Oak Ridge, Parkwest) | Equipment, oxygen and ventilator-transport support; no direct patient care until licensed; BLS |
| Imaging Tech Student | Students in an ARRT-approved radiography program | 4 (Parkwest, Fort Loudoun) | Routine X-ray work under a registered technologist; ALARA radiation safety |
| Intern, Corporate Materials Management | Current undergraduate or graduate students | 1 (Knoxville corporate) | Project charters, time studies, workflow analysis and process-improvement recommendations |
Search the full list on Covenant's job board, or read the SNA requirements on the nursing careers page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Each role's gate is about your program and how far along you are, and the postings spell it out:
• Student Nurse Associate: "junior or senior year status" in an accredited nursing program, with the fundamental clinical skills portion done or finishing "within the same semester of hiring." CPR is required.
• Respiratory Therapy Intern: "Current and active enrollment in a CoArc approved Respiratory Therapy Program" and current BLS.
• Imaging Tech Student: enrolled in an associate's-or-higher ARRT-approved radiography program.
• Corporate intern: "Currently pursuing Undergraduate or Graduate degree," with class work related to the duties; no licensure needed.
• GPA and visas: neither appears on any posting we read.
• Pre-employment: offers depend on a background screening, health screen and drug test, and every facility is tobacco-free.

Can You Apply Before You Finish Clinical Fundamentals?
Yes, if you'll finish them that semester. Covenant's SNA postings accept students who "must complete the program within the same semester of hiring into the position," which in practice means your first semester of clinicals. So a nursing student starting clinicals in January 2027 can apply during the spring semester rather than waiting for summer. Students earlier than junior year don't qualify yet. Covenant's careers page also offers a Talent Network sign-up if you want job alerts while you wait.
What Skills Does Covenant Health Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
We read all 17 student postings live on 3 October 2026. Two certifications and habits run through almost all of them: current CPR or BLS (16 of 17) and a commitment to join quality improvement initiatives (16). Documentation follows closely, in 15, from charting vitals to RT chart review. The clinical tracks then split: SNAs take vitals and record intake and output, while respiratory and imaging students handle equipment and patient transport. The corporate intern is the outlier, asking for time studies and process-improvement methods.

How Is Demand for Healthcare Interns Moving Right Now?
Healthcare administration intern postings · Sep vs Aug 2026

Clinical student hiring runs year-round, not by summer cohort, which is why Covenant's roles are worth applying to now rather than next spring.
Daily US job-posting counts, Sep 1–30 vs Aug 1–31, 2026. Covers under half of US postings; shows direction, not market size.
Build These Skills Before You Apply
Each skill maps to a remote Externship that fits around PRN shifts.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Process improvement | Corporate intern: "Observe, study, and analyze work areas to help develop recommendations aimed at improving efficiency" | Healthcare Operations Consulting |
| Work measurement & time study | Corporate intern: "analyzes work samples through time study statistics to develop standards for labor utilization" | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
| Documentation & health data | SNA: "Document/maintain patient record as appropriate"; RT: chart review for therapist assessments | TruBridge Healthcare Data Analytics |
The clinical skills themselves come from your program and the job. A finished project is most useful for the corporate posting, and for nursing students who want an informatics or quality role later.
What Is the Covenant Health Application and Interview Process Like?
Covenant's nursing careers page lays out the same five-step hiring process for every role:
1. Apply to the specific unit's posting on the iCIMS board. Apply to more than one unit if you're flexible.
2. Interviews. "A recruiter will contact you to start the interview process." Be ready to talk about your clinical experience and what you want to learn.
3. Offer. The hiring manager and interviewers decide, and your recruiter helps set a start date.
4. Pre-employment testing. Offers depend on a background screening, health screen and drug test.
5. Start with New Employee Orientation.
Covenant warns that real recruiter emails come only from @covhlth.com addresses and that it doesn't ask for bank details early. Our STAR method guide helps with the behavioral questions recruiters ask.
What the Community Says
Reddit has no thread about Covenant's student roles, so these cards combine older Indeed reviews from student nurse associates with Knoxville threads about working at Covenant.
Student nurse associates at Fort Sanders and in Knoxville describe the job as a great place to learn, where they picked up many different skills on their floor or in the float pool, though one adds that it isn't for the faint of heart (reviews from 2017–2018).
Someone weighing a Covenant offer heard it pays less than some local employers but has very strong health benefits; a reply the same day pushed back on how affordable family coverage really is.
Knoxville nurses comparing new-graduate RN pay say Covenant and UT Medical Center are close, though one experienced nurse reported a better offer from UT, so compare offers before you commit after graduation.
How Do You Stand Out for a Covenant Health Student Role?
Three moves, all doable this month.
Apply early and to the unit you want. Each unit posts its own requisition (Ortho-Neuro, Cardiology, Medical, Nephrology). Covenant doesn't publish how many SNAs become RNs, but its loyalty program is built for employees "on the path to becoming RNs," so a unit you'd like to join after graduation is the best place to start.
Show up ready to work. Have CPR or BLS current and your clinical fundamentals done before the interview, and say which shifts you can cover. PRN roles reward flexibility, especially nights and weekends.
Business students: bring a process example. The corporate Materials Management intern posting asks for coursework tied to the duties and describes time studies and workflow fixes. Walk the recruiter through one process you measured and improved, with the before and after.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 Covenant Health internship?
Summer 2026 is over, but Covenant doesn't run a summer class anyway. Its student roles are year-round PRN jobs, and 17 were open on 3 October 2026: Student Nurse Associate, Respiratory Therapy Intern, Imaging Tech Student and a corporate intern. Apply now and you can still be working there in summer 2027.
When should I apply for a summer 2027 Covenant Health role?
Now, or as soon as you meet the enrollment requirement. No posting has a deadline, and units post and repost roles all year; six of the 17 live postings went up in September 2026. Roles can come down within days, so apply the week one appears.
Who can be a Covenant Health Student Nurse Associate?
Junior or senior students in an accredited nursing program who've completed the fundamental clinical skills portion, or will complete it in the semester they're hired. CPR is required. SNAs work PRN under the supervision of a registered nurse at hospitals such as Parkwest and Fort Sanders.
Are Covenant Health student roles paid?
Yes. They're hourly employee jobs, but Covenant doesn't publish the rate on any of its student postings, so ask your recruiter. Ignore third-party estimates, which are modeled rather than taken from Covenant's own postings. Employees also get benefits like student loan repayment help after six months full time.
Where are Covenant Health's student jobs?
In East Tennessee. On 3 October 2026 they were at Parkwest Medical Center and Fort Sanders Regional in Knoxville, Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Fort Loudoun in Lenoir City, and Covenant's corporate offices in Knoxville. All are on site, with variable PRN hours.
Does Covenant Health have internships for business students?
Occasionally. One corporate intern role, in Materials Management in Knoxville, was live on 3 October 2026. It asks for current undergraduate or graduate enrollment and covers project charters, time studies and process-improvement recommendations. Business roles aren't posted on a fixed schedule, so check the board regularly.
Is this the same Covenant Health as in Michigan, Maine or Texas?
No. This guide covers Covenant Health in Knoxville, Tennessee (covenanthealth.com), which posts its jobs on its own iCIMS board. Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Michigan, and the Covenant Health systems in Maine, Lubbock, Texas, and Alberta, Canada, are separate organizations with their own job boards, pay and programs.
Do Covenant student nurses get hired as RNs?
Covenant doesn't publish a conversion rate. It does run an RN Loyalty Incentive for employees "on the path to becoming RNs," and it enrolls every new-graduate RN it hires in its Nurse Residency Program automatically, so an SNA job is a practical route into a first RN position.
Covenant's student roles are open now and fill unit by unit. A remote Externship fits around PRN shifts and adds a finished project to your application.
