Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center's flagship student program is the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF): 10 weeks, 40 hours a week in a research lab, paid $13 an hour, open to freshmen through seniors with a 3.0 GPA. The 2027 application opens on 1 November 2026 and closes at 5:00 pm ET on 1 February 2027, and the rules changed this year: applicants must not contact faculty before or during selection. You apply between November and February, you do research in summer 2027.

Nursing students have a separate paid Summer Extern program whose last window ran only 17 November to 12 December 2025. One door is already shut: the Administrative Fellowship for a July 2027 start closed on 11 September 2026.

A Cincinnati Children's internship usually means SURF, the hospital's 10-week paid summer research fellowship, where an undergraduate works in a faculty member's lab and joins training courses, seminars, journal clubs, career days and a poster competition, per the program page.

The hospital's undergraduate opportunities page lists several other doors: a paid Nursing Student Summer Extern program, an Accounting Summer Internship whose "applications open every fall", and discipline internships such as music therapy. Part-time "Student" placements in research and clinical departments are posted on Workday year-round.

Cincinnati Children's says in its job postings that U.S. News & World Report has ranked it among the top 10 children's hospitals for more than 15 years, and that it's consistently among the top three children's hospitals for NIH funding.

When Do Cincinnati Children's Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Each program runs its own calendar, and the dates below come from the hospital's program pages as of 3 October 2026.

SURF's window has been stable. The deadline was 1 February in 2024, 2026 and now 2027, and the 2027 application opens on 1 November 2026, about seven months before a late-May start. The nursing extern page still shows last cycle's dates (17 November to 12 December 2025), so the 2027 window is a projection. The Accounting Summer Internship posted on 10 October 2025 last year, and the hospital says applications open every fall.

The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

SURF has a hard deadline: 5:00 pm ET on 1 February 2027, with no late entries. Inside that window, review is rolling. Last cycle one applicant who submitted on 23 January was accepted about two weeks later, while another who applied on 3 November was still waiting in February, so applying early helps but doesn't guarantee an early answer.

The nursing extern is the tighter window. Last cycle it was open for under four weeks, from 17 November to 12 December 2025, and you need a faculty recommendation and a 3.0 GPA ready before it opens.

One process change matters for 2027. The SURF pages now tell applicants not to contact faculty before or during selection, and contacting more than two faculty can disqualify you. Older advice to email PIs first is now wrong; list up to three preferred mentors on the form instead.

Which Cincinnati Children's Internship Programs Should You Target?

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Each program sets its own rules. These come from the hospital's program pages and postings:

• SURF: undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in fall 2027 with a GPA of 3.0 or better, an interest in biomedical research or medicine, and US citizenship or permanent residency. F-1 students at Cincinnati-based schools who can get their own CPT may be eligible.

• SURF materials: essays, a résumé, one recommendation (two at most) and a grade report. You'll also need to pass a drug screen and share vaccination records before starting.

• Nursing extern: enrolled in an accredited RN program, at least one hospital clinical rotation, GPA of 3.0 or higher, a faculty recommendation, and junior year done (BSN) or first year done (ADN).

• Accounting intern: an accounting bachelor's student is preferred, with strong Excel and communication skills.

• Student placements: currently enrolled in a degree-granting college program.

Is the 3.0 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

For SURF and the nursing extern, the pages state 3.0 as a requirement, and SURF asks for a grade report to check it. Selection for SURF also weighs your essays and interest in research, so a 3.0 gets you in the pool, not the program.

What Skills Does Cincinnati Children's Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The hospital's student roles care less about tools than about readiness: being enrolled, being available for the whole program and showing a real interest in healthcare or research. SURF and the nursing extern add a GPA floor and recommendations.

What Is the Cincinnati Children's Application and Interview Process Like?

The process depends on the program. Here's what the hospital's pages describe for SURF and the nursing extern:

1. SURF: research the faculty, but don't email them. Review faculty research online and list up to three preferred mentors on the application. The 2027 rules ask you not to contact faculty during selection.

2. SURF: apply between 1 November 2026 and 1 February 2027. Submit essays, a résumé, a grade report and one or two letters through SurveyMonkey Apply before 5:00 pm ET on the deadline.

5. Hiring steps. Both are paid roles, so expect a drug screen, vaccination records and standard onboarding before late May.

If you miss SURF's 1 February deadline, the next cohort is summer 2028, so a part-time Student placement or another research program is the fallback for 2027.

How Do You Stand Out for Cincinnati Children's SURF?

Three moves, timed to this cycle.

First, submit in November or December, not on 1 February. Review is rolling, and last cycle's acceptances started in early February while applications were still coming in.

Second, earn the mentor match on paper. Since you can't email faculty this year, your essays and your three listed mentors carry the match. Explain why each lab's work fits your interests in a sentence or two, and say what you want to learn.

Third, show research curiosity even without lab experience. Alumni say many SURF students were first-timers. A class project, a data analysis or a short research write-up gives the reviewers evidence of how you work.

Nursing students should treat the extern window as the deadline that matters, since last cycle it lasted under four weeks. The hospital doesn't publish a conversion rate for either program.
